The New Edom Penguins

Nation: The Allied States of New Edom
Team Name: The Penguins

Governing Body: New Edomite Water Polo Federation
Team Colours: red cap, half white half black suits

Team Background: 4 years ago, President Perrin Pahath-Moab had encouraged the growth of national sports. Since at the time the nation was still struggling economically, the sports promoted were those which required little equipment and strong personal athleticism. One of hese was water polo. The New Edomite association brought in highly skilled swimmers from different parts of the nation to form a national team as part of a post civil war programme.

Generally the team members are the senior members of university and armed forces teams who love the sport and have excelled at it in national and regional competitions. New Edomites practice cultural naturism which is called Edenism and so while team members have suits they wear during competitions they tend to wear nothing in their coed changing rooms. Some are full time naturists, others are 'modernists' meaning that they wear clothing to be fashionable and cosmopolitan.

"Coach, you've dropped several important players such as captain Nathan Cavendish for this tournament. Are you trying to lower expectations in case Kelssek doesn't win the championship?

Ronan had prepared a number of completely asinine non-sequiturs to drop on the media, but he decided to conserve them for now.

"Nathan is a valued member of the national team, and he expressed the desire to focus on his club season. As you know, players are missing KWPL games for this tournament and contractual obligations are a case-by-case thing."

"So for the new players you have brought on, and those who did come to this tournament, are they second-best?" pressed another journalist.

"Well, this is a high-level tournament of course, and a good opportunity for some very good players to show that they deserve a place on the team, and make our job in choosing the roster that little bit harder."

"Does that suggest the national federation isn't taking this as seriously as the Olympics? How do you expect the organizers of this tournament to react?"

"That really is an unfair question, and not even genocidal maniacs go that far."

The press pack stared at him quizzically.

"Thank you, everyone," Ronan said and left the room before they could react.

(OOC: ....ANNND, the RP starts!)

Jace walked back to the locker room with a faced covered in sweat. He couldn't believe it - the Seagulls had won their first match with him as captain! Jace reflected on the climatic end of the game against BoeJoe in his head. That swim across the whole pool to make the epic game winning shot. How the team worked so hard. Yes that was a great game Jace thought to himself. Jace continued to think about the game in his head for a few more second but was so self absorbed in his thoughts he almost didn't notice Coach Jools coming up behind him.

"You did some really nice work out there Jace," Coach Jools said while his captain quickly recovered his professional demeanor.
"Yeah we really showed BoeJoe who's boss!" Jace replied back after a brief moment.
"Well keep it up and we could win this. But there always is next game, so don't get to cocky."
"I won't coach," Jace said as they both entered the locker room.
"I'm sure you won't Jace," replied Jools as he turned to address the team while Jace sat down with them. "You guys did a great job out there! That was a tough match to the very end. Now there are a few plays I would like to talk about.....

BRIGHT START, BRIGHT FUTURE

- By Alexandri Jean-Marv

DIFINTER The Kebec national water polo team, coached by native Kebecois Raymond Chapelle got off to a great start in the inaugural Water Polo International Championships in Furby Island, able to find its way to a 12-8 victory which saw it go on a 7-nill scoring-run in the final five minutes of play to come away with a good victory for a rather untested team. The team shown well during the match, Arsène Plessis, the thirty-five year-old goalie came away with a thirty-nine save night, an astounding performance for someone of his age, able to keep the Kebecois side in the game for much of the match. A hearty amount of goals scored by Marina Dieulafoy certainly helped in progressing the game, in the end, Dieulafoy would walk away with seven goals for thirteen shots, a wonderful game for the thirty-one year-old model for a Kebecois female company. As of now, Kebec finds itself in first place in Group A due to goal-differential -- this is good for the rag-tag band that has been put together to represent the nation, a 12-8 opening victory is good for morale as this was the opening game of the tournament. We must say, we are quite proud of the valiant performance from our side, there is truly hope for this team to progress to the quarterfinals we believe, whether or not this team possesses the qualities to go all the way remains to be seen however, one can hope that they have the skill to put it together.

The big reason for such a successful start lies in the likes of the man known as Raymond Chapelle -- Coach Chapelle has successfully lead the team on its opening march into the first edition of the water polo cup and we find no fault in him. Chapelle, a former amateur player himself has stunned us with his knowledge of water polo and his apparent wide array of coaching skills that has helped to prepare him for this performance, his opening gig yielded him a rather convicning 12-8 win, a victory by more than four points while the other winner in Group A, Donepuleopia had to hang on in a 10-9 win to come away with a victory, this serves as a moral boost for the squad after their thrashing of Savojarna in a convincing fashion, said star Kebecois hockey player, Fabien De Saint-Pierre, "If we can't beat them on the ice, at lead [ Raymond ] Chapelle has the power to guide us to victory in the water, three hoots for the KWP!" We believe, no one said it better than that -- quite essentially, Kebec's in it to win it and

At the moment, the Kebec national team finds themselves in a rather positive position for itself and the nation, they're leading Group A heading into an all-important second-game matchup-up which will most likely feature an all-out battle for the group title depending on who they face. While Kebec is advised to take it one game at a time, there's no hiding the fact that we finally see Kebec with a major chance to walk away with a huge victory and assure themselves passage into the quarterfinals, while we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, a win tomorrow will electrify the nation and certainly boost the standing of water polo in the nation. As the AKWP -- the Association for Kebecois Water Polo ("Association pour le Kebecois Water Polo") is pushing for a possible Kebecois bid for the second edition of the Water Polo International Championships, Kebec's performance in the first edition will be a major determining factor for the Kebec Sporting Association ("Association Sportive de Kebec").

Kebec we belive will face off Donepuleopia we assume assuming the Furby Islands match seeds two versus four, we'll just have to wait until tomorrow we assume.

Poor start for the West Phoenician Mermen as they lost against the nation of Nakad 4-7.

The West Phoenician Water Polo Federation initially put in a request forcing the opposing team to wear swimmers during there match.
"Everyone has the right to dress as they choose, in the comfort of their own home, but not in a sporting event. I don't care what the culture is" Team coach Paul Heavenwood declared during a post game interview with a West Phoenician Sports journalist.

"It through my guys off their game. The only ball flying around should be the water polo ball. If the Nakad water polo mens team refuses to wear swimmers in the next match against us, we rather forfeit than be apart of such an offensive sight. We plan to talk to other teams to garnish support for the World Water Polo Championships organizers to stamp out nudity."

Scott Mare was the star of the West Phoenician Mermen, scoring 3 of the 4 goals. And is seen as the top player of the team.

Hotel Room,
Boreem, Furbish Islands

The national water polo team were chattering excitedly still after the match, though not everyone was happy. The hotel suite's big common room area was crowded with players and families, some changing for a planned meal outside. A few others were getting a little body painting done.

"You're such a rube, Lardass," said lean dark tanned Adam Zircah scornfully as he came out of the washroom in a dress shirt and slacks. "No one but peasants goes around naked in public anymore. Just becuase you can doesn't mean you should."

"It's Lardiss to you, you Fineberg stuffed nose, and don't you dare forget it" the lead goal said fiercely. She was a stocky built but strong woman, with legs like a race horse--strong calves and thighs, wide muscular bottom, and she was getting the finishing touches of a team pattern paint job from her sister-in-law who whispered to her to ignore the snob.

"You didn't do too bad on goal today, Lardass," said Stephania Uris, tall, slim and coltish, who was lounging on the couch wearing just a towel. "But wait till they get a load of me, right?"

"Be at peace, friends, the Sphinxatopd, they played hard," said David Ambrose, one of the Defensemen, who was also planning on going out just in his sandals with a shoulder bag. He had a couple of friendly acquaintances on the Nakad team he wanted to run into and get caught up with, and he was a rural Haranese besides.

“Oh yeah, that backhander took me totally by surprise,” agreed Andreas Sathariel, another Defenseman. “Let’s be fair to Lardiss, folks, they got five steals on us.”

“Yes, if you on Defense rally your game we can win by a longer stretch next time,” said Zircah.

“That’s the way to tell them, my boy” said his father proudly. “You must all take the game more seriously, or we will take losses. This was a good beginning, but it could have been much better.”

Abigail Permiss, the head coach, seethed at this. Count Zircah was so annoying, and she wished she had banned the parents from coming. After all the players were adults, so this was just some of the wealthier parents—the only ones who could afford to come—treating themselves to nostalgia. However part of her was self conscious about confronting someone from the aristocracy, her own father being a schoolteacher and her mother a mail room clerk, so she hesitated. It was hard to argue with him too—Adam Zircah had scored three of the first goals of the game. It could not be denied that he was a great player.

Fortunately the Zircahs were not the only higher ups present. Head Manager Mashabbi went to have a quiet word with the Count. Permiss seized the opportunity.

“Alright everyone, that’s enough quarreling,” she said firmly. “Mister Zircah, I and I alone other than the manger give out team strategies and tactics, remember? Anything else you discuss with me.”

She hoped her cheeks didn’t pink when he looked at her. She always felt like he was only being courteous when he was obedient. He was irritatingly handsome, confident and capable.

“Yes Coach,” he said politely, smiling at her.

“"We needed to get some stops,” said. Permiss. She ignored Zircah and Uris and a couple of their friends grinning a bit smugly at this. “"When Chloe and Uriah are not making their shots, we need other players to step up. Adam it’s great that you’re such a powerhouse, and I know that may be how they do it at your University but by the Lord’s shed blood that is not how it is done on my team. You need to lead the offense, not be the star out there, understand? And the three of you need to work more closely together and press our advantage.” The offense’s smiles slowly vanished. “If this team gets everybody involved, we will be a phalanx out there. Now let’s have a good night, but not too good a night. I want everyone in early and up early for exercises and a last tactical review. We’re up before dawn and I want one last look at the viddies with you all to look over our upcoming rivals last match, understood?”

Permiss got a gratifying ‘yes coach’ but she knew that this coalition team was still seething with regional frustrations and rivalries. They had worked hard together but it was only the cultural rivalry with Netoraria and Shrailleeni that had gotten them big wins in their last international matches. This would be trickier and harder work. Plus it was her first time as head coach. Much was riding on this.

The team's chartered bus made its way back to the hotel, the players rehashing the game as they drove along, now and then glancing at the sights around them.

"Kestrel," said Marcello, the assistant coach. "Kestrel. Some goalkeeper I'll vow, some goalkeeper. Flew around like one. They did not give up easily."

"That Jace. A tactician, you can see it," said Abram Zircah, rubbing a bruise on his right arm. "Never mind the goal, Marcello. They played hard alright, but we need our defense to do its job better. Right Lardass? A little lonely out there today was it?"

"It's Lardiss, damn you!" she snapped at him.

"Oh come on, you're being too tough on them, Abram" said Chloe Kafziel, the firecracker who was part of his offense set. "Friends, did you see me steal it in that rush?"

"Best assist you've done in a while," conceded Abram. "So you have my thanks." Chloe rolled her eyes at her friend Ida Simon who stifled a giggle.

"So listen, Your Excellency," said Lardiss to Zircah. "From where I'm positioned what I see is the best defense is a good offense. If you weren't such a prima dona maybe you'd do a better job passing out there, eh?"

"They were a challenging team, the Seagulls. They are well led and ambitious," Permiss said, turning around in her seat. "But second win, team! Friends, things are going well for us!"

"Agreed," said the Manager, Mashabbi. "Let us give thanks to God together for He has seen fit to give us skill. But let us do so in all humility; for there may be god fearing people among them, and we should not be so proud as to tempt Him to favour one god fearing man or woman over the other." The prayer today was Psalm 63. When they had concluded, he said, "I heard Miss Lardiss speaking about moving our offense forward and I agree. We need to focus far more on offense, on passing and moving it down, and work on our short game. Many of these teams anticipate the long moves and they're ready for them, it's just a sacrifice. We must assume we will be playing some of the best teams in the world. And you two..." he pointed at both Zircah and Lardiss, "Will cease fire and work better together. Understood?"

"Amen sir," they both said. However they looked at one another dubiously.

The Adamastores in the hunt for Next Round

As many people know by now, this week was the start of the Water Polo International Championships, hosted in the beautiful nation of the Furby Islands. New Lusitania's "Adamastores" are one of the sixteen teams present for the competition and arrived on the past Sunday morning, two days before the first match. When we spoke to the manager, Paulo Salinas, he seemed confident about the tournament.

"We have been building a team for the past two years and with the International Championships, I honestly think we can put this squad to the test. We are going as far as we can go here in the Islands. We're not going home that quickly."

MATCHDAY 1 Review

New Lusitania began their odyssey with a match against Nanakai. Salvaterra started with Anadia and Machado. In the centre Borba and Águeda, with Leires and the finesse of Vitorino up front. The Nanakai squad seemed ready for the challenge. On the Lusitanian pool something about this match was special, the fact it was the first official match in the team's history. Borba had the title of captain and Salinas waited impatiently yet excitedly from the sidelines. The game started well, and it started one-sided for the lusitanians, being at one point 5-1. But this margin made the national team rest, and let the Nanakai team through leaving star Salvaterra without a chance. 6-4. The Lusitanian team started to wake up and smell the coffee, and so the men upfront started to get balls back into the Nanakaian net. 8-4. To the end even with one team having double the score of the other, the last half hour was eventful. The Nanakian scored another 3, but the pure power of Águeda secured the win at 9-7. At the end, you could see some of our players celebrating the first match's turnout as a win.

Matchday 2 Review

Unlike Matchday 1, Matchday 2 was an utter disaster. The West Phoenician team was stronger this time round, having the team up by 5-1 at the halfway stage. Once again the second act was better - maybe due to subs to freshen up the game. New Lusitania pushed it up to 5-6!!! However that wasn't for long as the phoenicians weren't hanging around and took the game up a level. The mermen gave somethig that will make the game unforgettable - the almost halfway shot from David Alcatraz. Peixoto, usually on the bench, didn't have a chance as he only laid mere fingers on it. Both teams were now on level ground but Phoenicia got the best of us. FULL TIME -> KWP 10 -6 LUS

We reunited with Salinas to talk about the final match: "We depend on us, but we recognize Nakad are an excellent team, and it's no wonder they're 1st in our Group, B.
We're going in to that pool in a few days time and do our best. We're here to win"

Inspiring stuff from the manager as they head the bus to their final match. Just like the previous matches you'll be able to watch New Lusitania X Nakad on STL Desporto 1, at 16:00 GMT/Portugal Time (15h Azores, 17h Andalusia), and in the screen at the Jamor Complex, in Lisbon/Oeiras.

A TOUGH BREAK

- By Alexandri Jean-Marv

Kebec Starters: Arsène Plessis - GK; Gaby Beaulne - D; Philomène Baume - D; Lambert Ménard - C; Marina Dieulafoy - F; Karine Manaudou - F
Kelssek Starters: Paul Dewdney - GK; Callum Devine - D; Nathan Frolík - D; Angelo Dossena - C; Chris Mitchell - F; Eamon Ó Conaill - F

DIFINTER The Kebec water polo team under-performed in front of a neutral crowd as they tied in an all-important match against Kelssek with a final score of 10-all on both sides, many find fault in Kebec's stalled attack which failed during the second half of play. Marina Dieulafoy, one of the forwards on the Kebec first-team was able to account for six of Kebec's ten goals including what seemed to be the go-ahead score until a Kelssek goal torched Kebecois hopes and forced Kebec to settle for a single point. Said coach Raymond Chapelle after the disappointing tie, "We though we had a sure win going into this game, I'm disappointed in our performance as the score-board showed our weakness on offense, the Kelssek side really exposed our teetering defense and we'll be sure to address mistakes tomorrow."

goal of his own for Kebec

The first half went on without much incident, with the beginnings of what seemed to be a shootout on both sides, Kelssekian forward Chris Mitchell drew first blood fifteen seconds into the game as the ball richoted off the surface of the water into the net. Kebec responded with Dieulafoy scoring a pair of goals within the first three minutes as Kebec took a 5-2 lead heading into the fourth minute, however, Kelssek was not to be denied as it scored a par of its own goals, forcing the game into a rigid stalemate as the clock ticked on and on. As intermission neared, the defenses on both sides locked down as the water became akin to trench warfare as counter-attacks proved highly productive for both sides, as intermission neared, it seemed it was going to be 5-4 entering the halftime break. However, the Kelssek-ian side would allow for Martin Beaulieu to jump to gods-high height and throw in the game-tying score, leveling the game 5-5 entering the half and giving Kelssek much-needed morale for the second half of play.

The second half yielded largely the same results as Kebec was able to successfully add five more points to their goal tally and seemed to be in the lead for a convincing victory over Kellsek, they were up 70-7 with five minutes left. However, as a Kelssek-ian would tell you -- you never doubt the wisdom and prowess of a Kelssek, a quick pass from Nathan Frolík to Harry Sponner set up a one-on-one situation between Sponner and the Kebecois goalie in Arsène Plessis who was unable to escape the sheer amount of power of the through as it buried him in the stomach and found its way into the net. Fas forward to three minutes later when Kelssek had gained much confidence and Kebec was now deflated, struggling to preserve a quickly deflating lead, however, it was not to be for the Kebecois side as an unlucky pass resulted in a turnover, allowing for a game-winning drive from the Kelssek-ian side, ending the game for Kebec. However, Kebec remains in first place for those wishing for some consolation of some sort.

Next up for Kebec is the hapless squad from Donepuleopia.
