Is it time to get rid of Congress?

Postby American Imperial Realm » Sat Mar 25, 2017 7:49 pm

The U.S. Congress is a bastard organization full of corrupt fools owned by massive corporations. Too beholden to serve the people.

Congress has the lowest approval rating in history. 19%

Let's not get emotional about 200 year old pieces of paper and institutions long since evolved and changed.

It's time to get rid of Congress and empower the executive to fulfill the direct will of the People.

no more petty bureaucracy. It's time to empower the leader and reorganize.

Politics is too inefficient.

Cos Trump's sky-high approval rating totally suggests that his bullshit is the direct will of the people...

I believe that Congress and the executive branch should be merged into a thing called Parliament with proportional representation. In other words, we need seismic levels of change to the system.

'We, the People' have the opportunity to make this change every election - but we cave in favor of party politics and vote out of fear of 'what that other bastard might do' rather than tell the lot of them 'you are not a good choice for $_reasons' as we ought to.

Get rid of congress? More like get rid of the corrupt congress members, vote for less 'beholden' folks, and if they don't exist, stand up and run for office ourselves, get someone less corrupt, lest apt to do what they want, and more willing to actually represent 'the people'.

We can sit here and play the blame game all day, bu when it comes down to it, the reason a corrupt system remains in place, top to bottom, is that we're too hesitant, lazy, fearful, or whatever else to break away from the lifetime politicians, demand term limits, and clean house.

"Have I ever told you the definition for insanity?"

Yeah.

Putting all the power of government in the hands of one man? Sure, why not? I'm sure that will go well.

Ah yes, because one person having unchecked power is definitely the way to fulfill the will of the people.

Get rid of Congress? Why stop there? Let's get rid of the whole Federal government, mate. Now you're talking.

Although something tells me that you might not be too down with the idea of investing all power in a single leader if Clinton had won this election.

No, we just need to fix gerrymandering by creating non partisan district drawing commissions and then Congress will be truly representative of the people.

That's a good start. Campaign finance reform and overturning Citizens United is another needed step.

Instead of trampling a whole article of the Constitution, why don't we place term limits on Congressmen to wash out all the bought-and-paid-for tools? It lets new ideas in, and keep old tried-and-tested failures of a representative from staying in Congress from first election to death.

While I support measures to combat corruption, eliminating the legislative branch is clearly not an acceptable method for a democracy. Maybe this could be acceptable for your little imperium, but not so much in a real country.
I'm tired of the fight. What we need is pragmatic solutions, not party politics.

If the opposite of pro- is con-, then what's the opposite of progress?

I'll show myself out.
A nation founded in the early 1800s by Federalist immigrants from the United States. Has since developed an identity of its own and imperial ambitions. Now a neoliberal imperial power that justifies its aggression by putting it the name of tolerance and social justice.

Term limits is actually a terrible idea. We're already seeing the consequences of having an inexperienced person who doesn't care about the people's will in office. It's sounds good but really would just make Congress all the more corrupt and ineffective than it already is.

Or we could just leave it all alone and let Trump supporters gnash their teeth and demand a safe space just a few months after they were mocking their opponents for exactly the same thing.

Hell no. This would be the end of democracy, period.

As much as Congress is hated, it's there for a reason. Shake up the system, sure, but abolishing the legislature entirely is probably the scariest idea on NS, and I've seen a guy say we should fine countries for rude internet comments.
