Our two largest "supermarket" chains are Safeway and Piggly Wiggly. Our largest chain is Small-Mart but it consists of a vast number of very small stores.

Five?! We do just fine with one. It doesn't have a name, it's just "the supermarket", because let's face it, people need to eat--they'll buy food with or without the store having fancy branding.

There are no supermarkets in the modern sense of a single building where all one's general domestic goods are purchased. Most people in Nortend go shopping at small, independent shops usually located upon a high street or around a square or green in the middle of a community. These may include greengrocers' (fruits and vegetables), grocers (dry goods, butter, jams &c), bakeries, dairies, sweet shops, delicatessens, chandler's, stationers', fishmongers, and butcher shops. American-style supermarkets are unknown, though some upmarket department stores are somewhat similar.
