https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/606ee6/if_all_50_states_were_to_suddenly_split_into/

saw this on Reddit and was intrigued by the Concept, so i thought i would bring it over here to see what you folks thought.

I'm from Central Florida myself, so i reckon we'd be on the frontlines potentially. Florida would probably ally with the former confederacy. Texas would probably take over Oklahoma pretty fast. California and New York would dominate their immediate areas, the West coast and New England, respectively.

What do you guys think? What would happen to your state? Would you return to your native sod?

Ireland would annex everything on Saint Patrick's day and become the most powerful nation on earth, without Alaska and Hawaii tho.

To be honest though, California's laws, or rather, the People's republic of California's laws and policies would lead it to ruin, which means that Texas, or potentially Alaska would come out on top.

Being from Missouri, we could probably take the plains pretty fast with our population of 6,083,672 and a Conservative government led by President and former Navy SEAL Eric Greitens. California would obviously dominate in the West, potentially forming a new united states with Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. I could see Utah expanding it's borders in the name of Mormonism. The New England Republic against New York would be interesting. The CSA will definitely come back, but a big question is how long it will last. That depends on how racist they choose to be. Texas may stay independent and I could see them aggressively expanding into New Mexico and Oklahoma. Colorado would be the Switzerland of North America, neutral and beautiful. The great lake states would probably unite.

It would depend on the circumstances of this split, but the most likely outcome would probably be a stalemate.

I doubt that any of the states have the economic ability to wage a war across the entire US. I certainly don't think that any state has the sustainment capacity to wage war across the entire US.

So you mentioned Florida allying with the former confederacy- does that mean it's not truly every state against every other state, it's just a civil war? In that case, the states of New England would all work together to ensure local sovereignty, they'd ally with New York and a few other east coast states, the east coast would ally with the west coast, and they'd fight against an alliance of the former confederacy, Texas (which would be autonomous), and the southwest. The midwest would be more likely to side with the other central powers both along ideological lines and to hold back an expansionist West Coast. Michigan, which is badly positioned, might be occupied, allowing the central powers to consolidate their position, but it might derive too much of an advantage from sharing the great lakes with New York. The outer powers would win, with the west coast annexing most of the rocky mountains and the north occupying the south again, but the north would never be able to stem the guerrilla war fought by terrorists (possibly through literally the same organization as last time: the KKK.) That'll necessitate keeping troops there indefinitely and imposing martial law, resulting in a second class status for southern states- they might even be considered colonies. This would not be greatly out of step with the previous conditions in those states, but the north would make attempts to impose its social policy on its colonies, which would be met by fierce resistance from the white colonists.
During the war, the central powers would be very authoritarian, possibly even suspending democracy, while the outer powers, especially New England, would be more libertarian. Both would delight of the opportunity to enforce their own social policy better than ever before- the outer powers would probably become something like a typical European social democracy. The central powers probably wouldn't bring back Jim Crow in name, but in the former confederacy a system to ensure the same results without making explicit mention of race would be set up and violence against black southerners would increase- many would probably flee to the north. The ideological persuasion of the north against imperialism might chafe with its oppression of the southern states- this guilt would be assuaged by portraying the war as an altruistic attempt to liberate black southerners. In reality, they would be exploited for profit along with the rest of the southern colonists- efforts would be made to conceal this fact and it would probably not be understood by the northerners themselves, as their ideology and racism would prevent them from being able to comprehend it. As the populace of the southern colonies was ever more demonized, a curious doublethink would emerge (really an extension of the existing liberal idea that authoritarianism is necessary to ensure social justice): to prevent imperialism, we must use it. The superior northern people must guide the inferior peoples of the world with a firm hand. This is not greatly out of the step with American foreign policy, which has long been based on the belief that the best way to ensure peace is through unquestioned military supremacy. While many on the left think of themselves as antithetical to this idea, the truth is that they have never been far from it themselves.
Strong economic ties between the west and east coasts would remain for the sake of mutual interest, but each would begin to see the other as the greatest long term threat to its own interests on the continent. The now landlocked midwest would be forced to accept economically punishing war debts, and would be subordinate to the two great powers.

Christian. If no one can serve two masters, and Jesus is lord, that implies that no one else can be lord. Christians overcome by submitting, like Jesus overcame death by submitting to it. That's the essence of nonviolence. No lords or masters except the one lord and master- every other master is in competition with him. If we can't serve both God and money, then money can't serve both God and us. Let Caesar keep his money- as for us, we'll hold our possessions in common. We need a culture of care instead of a culture of violence. He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.

California and the New England states have the biggest populations, a fair amount of industry, and generally a greater degree of access to military (particularly Naval) equipment, but the massive famines on the East and West cost brought about by lack of access to Midwest farmland would very quickly become crippling.

For reasons related to the Civil War, a slightly excessive percentage of America's military bases are located in the Southern US, so they would inherit a lot of military hardware. If anything this probably makes their situation worse, since all of their neighbors are going to be similarly equipped. Their battles there are going to be more brutal.

Texas probably thinks they ought to win, but there are a couple of reasons I think this unlikely:
1) The last time Texas was independent, they did an objectively terrible job of running themselves, and
2) They seem like they're going to piss-off literally everyone, and make themselves the victims of a coalition. Hell, I bet even Mexico gets in on the fun.

Now are nukes a factor in this? Because that seems like it would very quickly bring an end to the whole thing. Of course everyone thinks that North Dakota has a ton of nukes, but by no means do they have them all, and - if anything - their reputation means that they're just going to get preemptively nuked that much harder. There are a few other states that have similar silo arsenals, but I'm not sure how to divvy up the weapons belonging to US Naval and Air Forces. For simplicity's sake, let's just say that every Ohio-class submarine goes to the State they're named after.

In which case, based on this map, I'm going to say Oregon.
