YN during the Cold War

Postby Gandoor » Sat Mar 18, 2017 9:12 pm

Note - if your nation didn't exist during the Cold War or exists in another universe, please don't post in this thread to just post 'We didn't exist then/The Cold War didn't happen here', but you may post a 'what-if' answer/'what the predecessor countries were doing' answer.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? Gandoor was neutral from 1953 until the end of the Cold War in 1991.
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: Gandoor was allied with the Soviet Union from 1947 until 1953.
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? N/A
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? Since Gandoor is not a European country, we were not a member of the Warsaw Pact during our six years of alliance with the USSR.
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? Despite our neutrality during most of the Cold War, we were considered unofficially allied with Western nations.
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? There were movements amongst Russo-Gandoorese that supported Gandoor resuming its alliance with the USSR throughout the Cold War, with the height being the period between 1960 and 1975. After the Cold War, these would be revealed to have been encouraged by the USSR themselves.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? The Kingdom of Hjalteyri was surprisingly a supporter of the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: N/A
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? N/A
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? No, the Kingdom was a supporter but did not join the Warsaw Pact.
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? Hjalteyri leaned more to the East and even allowed Soviet personnel to use the island as a base of operations. Thus, we were considered a de-facto ally of the Soviet Union.
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? Yes.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? Neither, though we did slightly support the anti-colonial movements in Asia.
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: N/A
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? We did believe in some Western values, but we did not ally with NATO and the USA.
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? We did believe in some values held by the Communists (mainly expelling the imperial powers from Asia), we did not ally with the Warsaw Pact or USSR.
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? West in terms of our ideals, but we opposed the European colonialism.
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? Yes. We had Communists, Capitalists and dictatorial Capitalists brawling in the streets and attempting to sway public opinion. Her Majesty shot down the majority of attempts to ally with either side.

Against the USSR. We always will and have hated communism. However, we were technically neutral as we didn't join the war.

No. We just fucking hate communism and could agree it needed to stop.
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East?
West.

Each tried to sway us to help them fight, but we were just like "No, fuck you boi".

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? The Republic of San Regada was staunchly anti-Communist and funded many anti-Communist operations in Africa and Latin America, however due to the continuous rise of nationalism, relations between the NATO members and San Regada were poor, due to the fact that in World War 2, San Regada was aligned to the Axis and was ultimately invaded by American and British troops in 1941, resulting in the occupation of most of the nation until 1944, when the Allies were slowly pushed out of San Regada.

If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? --
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? --
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? West.
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? Several, the most famous was the attempted Coup d'etat of 1988 which resulted in the Regadan Civil War.

Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? The Capital Party (predecessor to the New Capitalist Party) wanted to join the West, but that was prevented by a referendum. There were also communist parties which united to form the United Communist Party (still exists today).

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? Our nation was predominantly allied with the USSR during the Cold War.
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: We were neutral from the start of the Cold War until 1966, when the Nationalist Worker's Republic of Donraai was established.
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? N/A
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? No, as we are an Asian nation, we were not a member of the Warsaw Pact.
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? During our period of neutrality, we were considered a West-leaning nation.
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? During the period of neutrality, yes, towards both sides. During the years of the Nationalist Worker's Republic (which would ultimately last until 2003), no, as any such movements were harshly shut down by government forces.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? A neutral position has always been held in international affairs, for the most part, though Ardrentt has always had a very slight bent towards the United States, having maintained generally friendly relations with them.
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: N/a
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? N/a
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? N/a
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? The West
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? There were several movements like that: The two largest ones that gained some traction were the Ardrenttide Coalition of Stalinists (ACOS) and the Union for American Hegemony (UFAH). Neither were massively popular (0.2% vs 0.5% of the popular vote respectively at their peak in 1978), and the former has been disbanded and splintered into several groups that deem themselves as "Socialistic fascists", which combined had a popular vote of 0.14% in the latest election. The latter group has found more success, mostly in merging with Internationalism for Ardrentt (IFA), with a popular vote of 0.4% as most Ardrenttides in support of that view tend to vote for The Party of Liberation, which is the local libertarian party and has a self professed bent towards favouring the United States.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? The Confederation was established in 1988, and sided with the West solely on principle all the way to the fall of the Soviet Union.
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: N/A
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? As a Southeast Asian nation, the Confederation is not a NATO member.
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? N/A
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? N/A
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? The Visayan elements of the New People's Army had joined the nascent People's Republic of Mindanao in 1988. Ideologically, they were aligned not with the Soviets, but with the Red Chinese.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on?

Consistent with longstanding foreign policy precepts, the kami stayed diplomatically neutral throughout the Cold War, though its displeasure was aired primarily at the Americans for its diplomatic and military conduct in Asia, especially during the Vietnam war.

If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East?

Both the US and the USSR came under stinging criticism by the kami throughout the Cold War; so it would be truer to say it leaned on both to act better.

Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side?

Political parties have historically been small and insignificant in Dahon; moreover, at the time, while the kami were trying to make their voice heard regarding Vietnam, most Dahoni woke up to dissident voices calling for, say, the merger of Dahon and the neighboring state of al-Ibramiyah or the independence of the Asunaro archipelago -- local issues at best. (These went as well as would be expected.)

If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? Yes
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? N/A
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? Though Japan is at the Far East, Britain-Japan is considered Western, as Japan's culture is pretty Western for a Far Eastern country (though it does have Far Eastern roots).
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? The closest thing was the Sakhalin Liberation Army, which attempted to bring Sakhalin home to Russia. (Just so you know, we got to keep Sakhalin, known as Karafuto.)

This nation is what happens had the Anglo-Japanese Alliance developed further and resulted into something like Austria-Hungary. As a result, the USSR takes Japan's place in the Axis, and Japan is still part of the allies during World War 2. The war ended due to fear of nuclear war.

Does not use NS stats until further notice.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? While officially Alizeria was neutral, in practice it was on the western side
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: N/A
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? No - this would contravene the Act of Neutrality of 1912, a key constitutional document
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? N/A
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? West
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? There was significant communist infiltration in the union movement, although this had the ironic consequence of swaying Alizeria towards the west, as right-wing governments were able to use the "red scare" as a means of gaining power and aligning Alizeria with the anti-communist bloc, and passing anti-communist legislation.

During the Cold War, which side was your nation predominantly on? Neutral
If you changed sides during the Cold War, please state who you were previously allied with: Somewhat western aligned following an invasion by Soviet-backed country in 1952, then marginally Soviet aligned following a border clash with a US-back country in 1970. After resumption of peace in 1979, became neutral again.
If you were on the side of the West, were you a member of NATO? No.
If you were on the side of the East, were you a member of the Warsaw Pact? No.
If you were neutral, did you lean more towards the West or the East? Both depending on the time frame above.
Were there movements that attempted to sway your nation towards one side? Yes, see above.
