Help...again

Postby Sir William Penn » Wed Mar 10, 2010 6:20 pm

Hi. I don't know if anybody remembers me, but last time I posted. I talked about how I was changing my majors from Political Science to Computer Science. I am an sophomore. Anyway, my adviser stated that to do so I may have to stay in school for another 1 or 2 years. Question, does this affect your chances at employment, once you graduate? Can it affect your ability to get into a good grad school?

I'd go with Computer Science, of course the problem with that is that one of my brother in law had to get a Doctorate just to get hired. Most companies are outsourcing their computer people to India and China.

Which is why I'm considering a grad degree...but i need to know does it affect you that much? I mean staying a year or 2 extra, does it affect your chances of getting into a grad school? Do they like frown on that?

Actually, back when I worked for the UNC system the statistics indicated that MOST students don't graduate in 4 years. Grad schools care about your gpa and your test scores, not how long it took to get the first piece of paper.

Okay. Thanks. I mean my grades are fine. And I think I'd do fine on tests. I'm just worried they'll frown at me taking 6 years.

Most students don't graduate in 4 years. Some tier-1 schools are even designed to take longer (Northeastern University is a 5 year school with co-op program).

Graduating on time for me meant graduating at the very start of the current recession. I wish I could have added a year or two onto my education, to be honest.

I would get fired from Best Buy, mainly because I'd be playing with the cool stuff all day long.
