Just announced was the discovery of 7 earth sized planets, orbiting in a solar system 40 light-years away. 3 of these lie in the habitable "goldilocks" habitable zone - where water can exist.
Could life exist here? Could we travel here anytime soon?

NASA: Revealing "Discovery Beyond Our Solar System" tomorrow
NASA has announced that they are holding a conference tomorrow (Wednesday the 22nd), at 1pm EST (18:00 UTC). The purpose of the conference is "to present new findings on planets that orbit stars other than our sun, known as exoplanets" and it will be accompanied simultaneously with questions being answered on the official twitter, followed by a reddit AMA with the scientists involved.

My opinion: Futurism has put forward the idea that the NASA are going to announce the presence of alien life. While I find this highly unlikely, I think its likely they'll announce the presence of a habitable planet - one thats highly earth-like - perhaps even one that seems likely to contain life or which they've discovered some possible but inconclusive signs of life from. Either way, I'm looking forward to see what they announce.

idk, they held in water on mars pretty well, and that press conference was announced well in advance. This one was only announced like, today or yesterday. I'd imagine it'd be a big deal if they're rushing to the conference.

We have a loooong time before that happens. Long enough for us to become a kardashev IV civilization 50,000 times over (assuming the current estimate of 100,000 AD is correct).
While I think space exploration could receive more attention nowadays, I don't think its being impeded to the point we that leaving the earth won't be viable 5,000,000,000 years from now.
