The Wild West [OPEN] [OOC]

There are some who like to say that hard times create good men. While this may have been true for those living in the civilized areas of the world, this couldn't have been any farther from the truth for those living in the Godless lands known as The Wild West. People first flocked to these lands in hopes of finding a haven from the various laws and mandates that restrict them from living out their dreams. Unfortunately for these new settlers, they found exactly that. Between Indian raids and outlaws taking what they want with the barrel of a gun, it seems like the West will truly remain Wild.

However, as technology moves, so do the people who use it. The locomotive has provided means of connecting people, good, and ideas from across the United States and beyond to places that were once isolated. Wherever the railroads went, the cities would follow. By the time the fires of the Civil War had faded away, it seemed like conquering the Wild West was possible, but only for those willing to work for it.

And in the small town of Wayne, Texas, the possibilities are endless.

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to The Wild West! It's time to leave those spellbooks and laser rifles behind and instead pick up the spurs and saddles as we travel back in time to the era of the Cowboys and Indians! Based in the fictional town of Wayne, Texas during 1873, this RP will follow the exploits of the various settlers, lawmen, outlaws, indians, and cowboys who called the Old West their home. While it's up to you to decide how you will live your life on the frontier, I will be guiding the characters together with specific events such as indian raids, bank robberies, murders, and who knows what! I'm basing this off of the old classic Western movies that defined the genre, so just be warned, I'm expecting a lot out of you all, but I know you won't disappoint!

NS Name: GCCS
Character Name: Ewan Basil Laudrey
Sex: Male
Age: 47
Place of Origin: Scotland, British Empire
Language(s) Spoken: English, German
Appearance:
During Sevastopol: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... t_ease.jpg
Now: http://c8.alamy.com/comp/DB85W5/handicr ... DB85W5.jpg
Livelihood: Gunsmith
Weapons: Pattern 1853 Enfield Musket (with bayonet), Colt model new army
Skills: Gunsmithing, some shooting (although not as precise as trained marksmen), bayonet fighting, cooking, gardening, reading stories to small children.
Bio:: Laudrey was born in Glasgow, Scotland, during the rise of the British Empire. His father was a marine in the Royal Navy, his mother an American whose family had come back to Britain after the American Revolt. The two shared a happy home on the outskirts of Glasgow, living both off the sizeable pension of his father and the family inheritance of his mother. As was expected of Laudrey, he joined the Royal Army at a young age, following in his father’s military footsteps. Most of this time, he served in Scotland, attending various classes and balls, and being an all-round gentleman in most fashions. He dressed the part, ate the part, and spoke the part. He never planned on actually going abroad, the colonial wars were superbly handled by the Royal Navy and her contingents. There was no need for the Scots to be involved. With their colourful uniforms and banners they were an excellent morale boost for the people at home.

In 1853, all that hope to a peaceful end to the war was shattered. The United Kingdom declared war on the Russian Empire in defence of the Ottoman Empire, a war that was fought out in Crimea. The Scottish reserves were pulled in, too, as this was expected to be a grand European war. The morale was high, at least in the beginning. The lads went to Turkey singing, dancing and drinking, telling tales of their own fathers, and their father’s fathers, at various battles in their lives. Waterloo! Iberia! India! With these tales in their hearts, the lads went off to war. This turned out to be a bitter disappointment. Rifled muskets had made their entry, and the Russians fought harder and stronger than the underequipped war bands of India. There was slaughter, slaughter and stupidity. Cavalry charged were mowed down with precision cannon shots. Shrapnel and explosives flew across the battlefield, turning it first brown with mud before turning it red with blood and the torn uniforms of the Brits. The war lasted for three gruesome years. Laudrey, who had risen to the position of lieutenant of his regiment, commanded his men valiantly, but he too could not keep his men from dying. The disease only made things worse. Cut from supplies and much-needed repairs, and as a way to endear himself with the men, Laudrey took it upon himself to learn how to repair rifles. It was a skill he would hone.

After the war’s conclusion, which didn’t bring much in the way of glory or honour, the Scots returned home. Laudrey could never accustom to civilian life, however. He was worn-out, beaten-down, and misunderstood. His father called him a coward, his mother felt ashamed sometimes. Eventually, Laudrey couldn’t take it anymore. He took the first ship he found, and went for the US, the land of new opportunities. There, he found employ with the army, both training troops and commanders in the ways of war, as he had experienced them in Crimea. The higher-ups didn’t really like his lessons, especially since they acknowledged the horrors of war, and they rather kept him drilling soldiers than actually teaching them useful things. Eventually, when the civil war broke out, Laudrey had to sit idly by as his regiments were cut to pieces by enemy fire. They did not charge, they did not work together, they just fought, they shot, and died where they stood. The casualties were enormous. At the battle of Gettysburg, Laudrey realised he didn’t miss war. He realised he despised it. So, he went to work on the most peaceful profession he knew: gunsmith. While it was no exactly one of direct peace, at least he didn’t have to kill anyone, or observe killing. His rifles would be for sport, for hunting, for competition, not for the cruelties of war. Perhaps a few for self defence, or as deterrent. After roaming the nation for many years, Laudrey finally settled in Texas, where he opened his own workshop. He even found himself a girl to marry, Nicolette, who he has kept close ever since.
Misc. Info: He is a man often seen in his neighbourhood, helping to tend quite a few gardens, and entertaining the neighbourhood children when he can. They often come to his house for a story, and he always has a few ready to tell.

Character Name: Walter Shelby
Sex: Male
Age: 48
Place of Origin: Eastern Tennessee

Appearance:

5'8", 130 Lb
Livelihood: Rancher
Weapon(s):
CSA Infantry saber
Winchester M. 1873
Skills: Ranching, Carpentry, Can read and write, Can ride.
Bio::
Walter Shelby lived the standard life of a poor white kid growing up in what was, at the time, almost a frontier of America. That life entailing growing up in a log cabin for the earlier section until his father moved him, their mother, and his two siblings to Knoxville. There, his father made stable money at carpentry, eventually opening his own practice in the trade.
Walter's life soon changed for the better when his father delved into tobacco and corn production on top of his carpentry business. Add on some wise investments and Mr. Shelby stood to make a lot of money. With this new influx of wealth, Walter was sent to school in Nashville, where he received a very high education for someone of his background. He had originally studied law, but switched much of his focus to journalism and literature.

Thus, at the outbreak of the Mexican-American war, Shelby was whisked away to Mexico where he reported on the happenings of the war. Afterwords, He took a tour of the Mediterranean, where he would fall in love with southern Europe, especially Spain. A keystone in his thread of life.
On his return, he continued to help manage his father's enterprises, while writing newspaper entries as a side-job. He got married to a woman, Helen, and had a son.
It wasn't long before his father's death, on the eve of the American civil war. Though eastern Tennessee, and indeed, elder Shelby's own opinion swayed towards siding with the Union—Walter become swept up in the changing currents while staying in Nashville and figured an opportunity to make something of himself sat in joining the army. The Confederacy was looking for officers, and Walter's background in academia promised to land him with a commission.

That it did, bringing his to the rank of first Lieutenant.
He would regret his decision to enlist for the rest of his days.
War was hell, of course. He had gotten a small taste of it during the Mexican-American war, but he could never have imagined it to be as it was. That was a different war, and those were different times.
Thus, Walter fought all the way to Vicksburg, never seeing promotion, and never seeing rest. After surviving the harrowing siege on the Mississippi town, he spent some time in a POW camp before being released on parole.
He sat out for the rest of the war, watching his home of Knoxville be battled over and the life's work of his father be torn down. With full defeat brought depression and economic disaster. Thus, after struggling for eight years, Shelby packed up his family with what remaining money he had and moved west.

Originally, he planned to strike out for Utah territory or Arizona, but he eventually stopped on the broad plains of Texas. Here, he established a horse and cattle ranch in Wayne. His wife and full-grown son helping him build a new life. One, he hopes, will lead to his dreams.

NS Name: House of Judah
Character Name: William R. Hatfield [William R. Horton]
Sex: Male
Age: 27
Place of Origin: Columbia, Mississippi [Franklinton, Louisiana]
Language(s) Spoken: English, French, Latin
Appearance:
Image

Livelihood: Saloon Owner
Weapon(s):
  • Remington Model 1858
  • Winchester Rifle
Skills:
  • Ambidextrous
  • Accounting
  • Horse Riding
  • Haggling
  • Pugilism
  • Shooting
Bio:
William R. Hatfield, not of the West Virginia Hatfields, was born and raised on a plantation near Columbia, Mississippi. His father was a plantation owner and had raised William as his heir. William was educated by tutors on numerous subjects. When he was 15, William's father began involving him in the plantation operations and appointed him manager of the plantation in late 1860. In 1865, the plantation was destroyed and his parents killed when Union forces marched through Columbia. Seeking to create a new life out west, William arrived in Wayne accompanied by Jim and Jennie, a negro brother and sister who were formerly slaves of the Hatfield plantation.

Except William R. Hatfield is a complete fiction. William R. Horton was born on his father’s plantation, but in Franklinton, Louisiana, not Mississippi. And while he was raised to be his father’s heir, his father did not die on account of Union soldiers. His father death was by William’s own hand, when William shot down his father to prevent him from beating Jennie to death. With his mother’s help, William fled Franklinton in the company of Jennie and her elder brother Jim.

After arriving in Wayne, William and Jim worked together to build the Quicksilver Saloon. William is the main public face of the saloon while Jim works the bar and Jennie oversees the girls who work the tables and the rooms upstairs.
Misc. Info:
William is an intellectual and has a love of the written word. Although enjoying whisky and willing to play a friendly game of cards, he is always a moderate drinker and never engages in high stakes poker. He loves haggling with merchants, possesing what his father described as "a Jew's own nose for business." Though generally attempting be jovial with others, he also considers himself a "Southern Gentleman" and has a short temper when insults are given to women or his friends. Jim was a playmate of William's early in life, and William remains fiercely protective of the Jim and Jennie.

It'll be interesting to see how the locals react to blacks in their town. While there are no slaves, it's still the South. Wayne is a fair city, however, so while there will definitely be prejudices, there (likely) won't be any lynch mobs going after them.

Actually, that gives me ideas for later events. Muhahahahaha.

NS Name: New Finnish Republic
Character Name: Austin James Longfellow
Sex: Male
Age: 26
Place of Origin: Wayne, Texas
Language(s) Spoken: English and limited Spanish
Appearance: 5'11", 190 lbs, muscular build, slightly unkempt hair
Livelihood: County Sheriff
Weapon(s): 1860 Colt Army Revolver and 1866 Winchester Repeater Rifle
Skills: Horse-riding, marksmanship, law knowledge, and hand-to-hand fighting
Bio: Austin was born in Wayne, Texas, in 1847 to Mary and Tod Longfellow. His parents were both prominent members of the town, as his father was the county sheriff and his mother was one of the managers for the local bank. Austin, along with his older brother Thomas, were raised to become respectable men and were expected to do great things when they grew up.

And it appeared that they had the promise to do so. While Austin was shown to be a natural when it came to horse-riding and a crack shot with a rifle, Thomas was seen as an intellectual genius who was also great with people. Most people in the town expected the two Longfellow boys to be practically running the town by the time they could grow hair on their chins, and this likely would have been the case had it not been for the outbreak of the war.

Even though his parents begged him not to, Thomas was one of the many young men from the South to join the rebel army in hopes of beating back the Yankees. While nobody in Wayne owned any slaves, many still felt that it was their duty to rid the south of the oppressive federal government that tried to dictate how they should live their lives. Austin would have followed him as well, but his parents strictly forbade him from going until he reached the age of 18.

Reluctantly, Austin followed the orders of his parents until he got a letter in the mail informing him and his family that his brother had died during the Battle of Cold Harbor. Furious and filled with grief at the loss of his brother at the hands of the Northerners, Austin ran away from home to join up with the Confederate Army as part of the Texas First Regiment. He'd see the tail end of the war, with the siege of Petersburg, the skirmishes in between, and eventually the surrender of the Confederate Army.

Once the war was over, Austin returned home, only to find out that his bad luck had not yet run out. Several months prior to his return, his father had suddenly died from a heart attack that many blamed on his stress of worrying for his remaining son. Her oldest son and now her husband dead, Mary lost the will to live, and when she caught an illness several weeks later, she died peacefully in her sleep.

Now without a family, Austin mourned for several days alone in his home, refusing to either leave or let others see him. Many residents were worried about what would happen to him, and many feared that he would eventually take his own life. However, these worries were soon dashed aside as Austin walked into town one day, a fresh look of determination filling his face. He had mourned long enough, and he decided that wasting his life crying over their deaths would only make their deaths in vain.

Determined to make a difference in his community like his late family had, Austin became a deputy under a family friend who had taken over Tod's role after his death. Austin learned much about just how cruel the frontier could be. For years, he battled outlaws and indians who would raid the locals. It was hard work, but Austin enjoyed every minute of it. Thus, when the time came for the current sheriff to step down, Austin filled in the position and followed in the footsteps of his father as the county sheriff. He's yet to have any deputies under his wing, but for the time being, things have been peaceful enough that they haven't been needed.

For the time being, that is.

Misc. Info: He enjoys spending time at the saloon playing cards with others, although he refrains from getting too drunk. He suffers from a minor case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the carnage he saw during the war, but he doesn't let anyone know about it.

Hopefully when (Or if) someone decides to be a cowboy type character, they can come under your hire.

Yep, here's 'Big' Jim

NS Name: House of Judah
Character Name: “Big” Jim
Sex: Male
Age: 29
Place of Origin: Columbia, Mississippi [Franklinton, Louisiana]
Language(s) Spoken: English, French, Latin
Appearance:
Image

Livelihood: Barkeeper
Weapon(s):
  • Remington Model 1858
  • Double-Barrel Shotgun
Skills:
  • Horse Riding
  • Wrestling
  • Pugilism
  • Shooting
  • Tracking
Bio:
’Big’ Jim has known William since he was only ‘Little’ Jim. At only two years old he was selected to be the newborn William’s play mate and the two have been thick as thieves since William could walk. Although such things were usually frowned upon, Jim was permitted to sit in on William’s tutoring sessions so that he could help William with his studies. He has been William’s friend for the entirety of William’s life, but for many years Jim has been aware that one day his best friend would be his master.

That is until the day that William’s father in a drunken fury set out to beat Jim’s little sister Jennie. In fear for his sister’s life, Jim ran to William seeking aid. His friend responded quickly to intercede and stop his father, only to be pushed aside by the intoxicated man. And that’s when William shot his father.

Jim and Jennie joined William in his flight from Franklinton, helped him come up with the lie of their origins and, while in the wildernest, learned a little about tracking (certainly more than William did). Finally, they settled in Wayne, Texas, where they built the Quicksilver Saloon. As a white man, it quickly became clear that William should be the open face of the saloon and, in truth, he had the better head for business. Jim worked the bar while his sister waited tables and eventually began managing the other girls William had hired.
Misc. Info:
’Big’ Jim is keenly aware of everything William has given up to protect him and Jennie and, as a result, is loyal beyond question. Although he occasionally plays devil’s advocate during one of William’s flights of fancy, once William has set his mind to a path Jim will follow him into the very depths of Hell and poke the Devil in the eye.
RP Examples: Look up thread a little.

Lets get ranching.

NS Name: The Twelve Isles
Character Name: Jessup Barrow
Sex: Male
Age: 26
Place of Origin: Killjoy Louisiana (On the Bayou)
Language(s) Spoken: English, a little Spanish.
Appearance:
Image

5 foot eleven inches tall

150 pounds

Livelihood: Rancher
Weapon(s): Griswold & Gunnison revolve
Lorenz Rifle
Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun
Skills: Shooting
Talking
Haggling
fighting
Cattle driving
Horse breaking
bullshitery.
Bio:: Jessup Barrow was born and raise in a little town in Louisiana called Killjoy. Most in the town were cotton farmers, and were under the employ of a large plantation owner in some way or another. For much of Jessup's childhood, he lived a Tom Sawyer existence. He made his way shirking his chores to go and play with the other children. Swimming, fishing, fighting and running away from the school teacher Mr Stanley were all normal parts of his day. His parents tried their hardest to discipline Jessup, but it was to no avail.

When Jessup was 14 the civil war broke out, and he desperately wanted to join the Confederate army. Not for any ideological reasons, he could give a shit about what color someone was, but because he wanted the glory of fighting in war, just like the brave soldiers and hero's in the many Greek legends and myths that he liked to read. In 1864, when he tuned 17, Jessup joined the army, and fought in many battles.

The war changed Jessup. In the two years he spend fighting in Virginia, he changed from a naive young boy determined to prove himself a man on the field of battle to a hardened veteran, angry and bitter at himself for putting himself into such an awful situation. When the war ended, Jimmy signed on with a railroad, hoping to go out west to find some new opportunity to distance himself from what he did in the war. With his musket and pistol he had been given in the war, Jessup set off, eventually finding himself in the town of Wayne Texas as the company he was working for passed through.

Deciding he wanted a change of pace, Jessup used the money he had saved up working for the railroad and bought a small homestead and a few cows. He began working to build a ranch, and was fairly successful until the arrival of other ranchers in the town, who had a much more solid background in ranching. As Jessup's business began to fail, a group of lawyers began to try and buy his ranch on behalf of a much larger rancher out in West Texas, who wanted to expand his business. Jessup refused out right, and after the lawyers began to get a little two close for comfort, two of them quickly skipped town when the third disappeared after trying to bully Jessup into taking the deal. Soon, the work was snaking away from him, and Jessup found himself on a failing ranch with 20 half starved cattle, a parched field, two scruffy old horses, a home that was starting to fall apart at the seems.

Misc. Info: Jessup has a reputation in the town for being a loudmouthed drunk, prone to riding into town in the middle of the night firing his guns and singing Dixie. He is also prone to starting fights, especially with workers from other ranches, who he views with a bitter resentment for the failings of his own. It is well known as well that he has killed people before, most notably one particularly nosy lawyer, even if there was never enough evidence to bring charges against him. Many in the town are a little frightened of Jessup, fearing what he might do if they cross him like the lawyers did.

Some songs I think fit Jessup Barrow and the Barrow Ranch pretty well.

Empress Lena Cartwine III sat with her daughter, Princess Bella Cartwine. She read the paper, and hunched over it slightly in frustration. Its seemed like she had a hard time ahead. The Twelve Isles had been coming out of their historic cocoon, trying to reach out to the different nations of the continent, and were building their navy significantly, even begging work on a 4th fleet. A young man stepped up, wearing a crisp jacket and slacks, and poured Lena a third cup of coffee.

"Thank you Timon," she said, and her servant nodded politely. Lena flipped the paper closed, and let out a huff.

"Whats the matter mother?" asked Bella, oblivious to the stress of running a nation.

"Just politics dear," said Lena, taking a bite of her eggs.

"Oh," said Bella, making a face, "Politics are boring."

"Politics are frustrating is what they are."
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Lady Cartwine," said Horatio Billem with a bow to her. He stood in front of a map, and flanking him were three other men, Admiral Roger Dodson, Field Marshal Jonathan Whitaker and General Alec Sturgess. They all had stacks of notes in front of them, and they were waiting patiently to tell her about what she already knew. When she sat at the head of a long table, the 4 military men in front of her began to speak in serious tones. They explained how there had been a coup in Rannoria, and that it had seemingly ruffled the feathers of the Warglorians. The Aclusians were conducting more naval patrols, and as far as could be seen, the Caribbean was heading into civil war.

The commanders tried to say more, but Lena spoke over them. She was looking at the Aclusian peninsula, and the large island that broke away from it. Their similar geography, and more peaceful look at dissolving conflict. It seemed they didn't want war, and neither did the Twelve Isles. "Commanders," said Lena with an authoritative punch to her voice, "you are looking at this situation as the begging of a war. We are looking for an ally, not a conflict."

"Yes ma'am, I understand this very well," said Horatio Billem, "but with the state of the world as it is right now, we should be looking very seriously at a possibility of going to war."

Timon came in as they spoke, and quietly poured them all a glass of wine. "Timon," said Lena, "what do you think. These gentlemen seem to believe our best course of action is to make a show of force, but I believe we should be looking for friends instead of war. Your thoughts."

"I believe," said Timon, his voice quiet and serious, "that to prepare for war one should look for friends." He then turned, and stood quietly by the door, waiting for anyone to need their glasses refilled.

Lena looked at her Generals Staff, and said, "That settles it. We will reach out to Aclus, they seem to be the most compatible with our interests."

"Yes ma'am," said the commanders, but before they had a chance to leave the room Lena stopped them.

"Considering the situation on the mainland though," she said, "send with our envoy an escort of two Ironclads. We have one of the largest fleets around, and I believe we should try to flaunt that." Lena stood, and took a quick glance at the map, before retiring to her office to write a letter.

TO ACLUS
FROM THE TWELVE ISLES

Dear Emperor Marcus Ragnus,

I, Empress Lena Cartwine III wish to extend my hand on behalf of the Empire Of The Twelve Isles to your nation, Aclus. In this time of strife on the mainland, we wish to extend an offer to you and your people. In exchange for forming a defensive alliance with us, we would be willing to supply your people with the oil and coal that we have in such abundance on our home islands. If you wish to make a deal, we shall set a time and a place to meet.

Empress Lena Cartwine III
Empire Of The Twelve Isles
