Democracy in YN

Postby Albaireu » Sun Jan 22, 2017 5:37 pm

The status of democracy in Albaireu is not disputed. De jure, the Monarch is the source of executive, legislative, and judicial power in Albaireu and has no limits in his power. The Monarch has the right to essentially do as he pleases. There is a parliament, called the National Assembly, or the Assemblé Nasional, but only thirty-three percent of the membership is directly elected. The Assembly is divided into three tiers; the Commons, who's members are elected by the people; the Clergy which is selected by Her Holy Mother Catholic Church of Saint Peter and Augustine and the Nobles who are hereditary peers. While the Assembly has the right to propose legislation, legislation cannot be enacted without the direct consent of the King. The Chairman of the Tables of Government is commissioned by the King to represent his person in the Assembly and managing day to day government affairs, but he has no power unless enabled by the King as is the head of government only by name. The Tables of Government are twelve Ministries each one led by a Minister. The Tables of Government is answerable to His Majesties Congress, the main executive body. The Congress both de jure and de facto has complete control over government, legislative, and judicial matters with the Assembly being largely a rubber stamp and the Tables of Government acting as a puppet of the Congress.

tl;dr - Albaireu is an absolute monarchy with a puppet government controlled entirely by His Majesties Council and the King.
Me: Centrist-libertarian pragmatist and independent who dislikes America's two-party system.

Aikoland can be considered a semi-democratic state.

The head of state and government is the Most Blessed and Holy Leader of Aikoland, who are usually referred to as Sister. Our legislature is the Sacred Congress of God, which is divided into the upper House of Priests and the lower House of the Commoners.

The House of the Commoners is so named because it is the house where the common citizens may elect representatives, 300 to be exact, with three political parties having representation. The House of Priests is an unelected house of 150 priests and nuns, who are members of the Catholic Party, who are appointed by the Most Blessed and Holy Leader and they serve for life. The Most Blessed and Holy Leader herself is chosen by the House of Priests when the previous one either dies or steps down.

Despite there being three political parties in the House of the Commoners (the Catholic, Conservative, and Democratic Parties), the Catholic Party is the only party permitted to rule in our nation. The House of the Commoners has the authority to vote upon bills before passing them to the House of Priests for formal approval, although the House of Priests has the authority override any decisions made by the lower house. In addition, the Most Blessed and Holy Leader has the authority to rule without consulting the Sacred Congress entirely, although throughout our history, both the Most Blessed and Holy Leader and the House of Priests have worked with the House of the Commoners when it comes to ruling our nation.

The Kingdom of Aldina was formerly a feudal state divided into baronies. When the Grand Empire as we know it was formally founded by Emperor Marius I, one of the items in the Imperial Charter was the creation of a representative Senate as a national legislature, with one Senator from each barony; it was one of the earliest post-Classical democracies in the world, but greatly robbed the noble class of much of their clout. Generally speaking, this worked fine, until a bunch of noblemen got it in their heads to depose the Senate and restore the power of the feudal overlords, starting with a coup that blew up into a conflict now known as the Crown War. The details on exactly what kind of government the rebels wanted to install are unclear, mainly because most of them got the rope shortly after the war ended.

South Africa is semi-democratic.

The Parliament is divided into two houses, the Senate (upper) where each Province is represented equally by 7 Senators each and the National Assembly (lower) where MPs are elected from multi-member constituencies. Both houses are elected by Single Transferable Vote and all members of the White, Coloured and Asian communities over age 16 can vote. Blacks (at least 17.5% of the population) are not allowed to vote.

The Senate is made up of 35 members and has the power to delay and amend legislation. The current Speaker is Senator Maurice Henderson (Labour-Natal Province). The National Assembly is the source of legislation and is the most influential house. It is made up of 351 MPs and the Speaker is Dawie de Jong (National-Orange Free State).

Additionally, South Africa is a parliamentary republic and the President is responsible to the legislature and is an MP.

Democracy is considered the absolute central tenet of Carolinian society. Everyone is given their voice, and everyone is given their rights, regardless of background, sex, race, etc. It also establishes the politics of the country.

In Hangreetya, democracy is totally popular and socialist. Our system is based in councils. In each district there is a District Council, in each city there is a City Council, in each state there is a State Council. At the national level it is the Popular National Council. District, municipal and state councilors are elected without partisan membership on the initiative of the popular, not the candidate. In the National sphere, the choice is between the state councilors in which each one must choose one that will represent their state on a national scale.

We are a Constitutional Republic. Democracy is direct on the state level, during the election of governors. our 62 states vote on the president of the U.C.S. using electoral votes. The 3 most important states are Texas, with 91 electoral votes, California, with 83 electoral votes, and Florida, with 67 electoral votes The 3 least important states are Nova Sotia, with 3 electoral votes, New Brunswick, with 5 electoral votes, and Sonora, with 9 electoral votes. The candidates who normally win aim for all states, not just the big ones.

We are a democratic state and all adult citizens can participate in democracy, with the only exception being those who are currently in jail, but that right is automatically restored upon being released from prison.

On a national level, citizens vote for politicians to represent them in the Forum, our legislature, which consists of one chamber with 1000 seats. While the Prime Minister isn't directly-elected by citizens, since they come to power by whichever party has the majority of seats in the Forum following a National Election, most Gandoorese citizens consider a vote for the party as a de facto vote for the Prime Minister.

Victorious Decepticons is an autocratic military dictatorship. Democracy is derided as idiocracy by nearly everyone. It is believed that most people do not care enough about the details of governance to even bother to get them right, and that the ability to make oneself popular on a short-term basis (namely, during campaign season) is not any sort of qualification for leadership.

Instead, we believe that a good leader has proven his merits by reaching certain important milestones: Proven military prowess, great overall understanding of the big picture in both military and civilian life, and an ongoing record of exemplifying our values. Of course, the first major qualifier is being able to gain control of the government in the first place - the other qualifications serve to help determine whether the dictator will be able to keep ruling or if he'll face a successful revolt later on.

Great Leader Megatron fulfills all of the criteria to the maximum level. He is also the founder of the Nation, so he did not have to wrest control from someone else. This isn't to say that he's had it easy - he has led us through many wars, some serious, and has also survived countless assassination attempts. However, such attempts have been minimal compared to the size of the population, and typically have nothing to do with policy (instead, it's mostly people who simply want the dictatorship for themselves).
No war RPs; no open RPs.

Our legislature has 2 chambers, the upper house (Senate of Elites, SoE) and the lower house (Senate of the People, SotP). The SotP is directly elected by the people, but the SoE is indirectly elected by a 800-member council, the Council of Regions (CoR). 600 of the 800 members are chosen by the people, and the other 200 is chosen by the President.

The SotP has more powers and can make laws, which need to be approved by the SoE before passing on to a relevant minister (For example: An enviromental law would go to the Minister for the Enviroment). If the minister approves the law, the President needs to approve it, and then it is done.

The SotP has 300 members and the SoE has 150 members. Both chambers are ruled by the same parties, which are:
Identitarian Movement - United Against Degeneracy (54 seats in SoE, 73 in SotP)
Patriotic Movement (14 seats in SoE, 30 seats in SotP)
Human Future Party (18 seats in SoE, 45 seats in SotP)
United Republican Front (19 seats in SoE, 32 seats in SotP)
Freedom Party (12 seats in SoE, 28 seats in SotP)
National-Socialist Union (5 seats in SoE, 12 seats in SotP)

These parties together are commonly referred to as "The Coalition".

De Jure, the League of the Six Free Peoples is a free market liberal democracy. Our current ruling party is the Libertarian Party, with the Pirate Party and the Neoreactionary Party generally in opposition. There are also smaller parties that have importance on the local level.

De Facto, the real power is in the hands of the neckbeard cartel La Cosa Fedora, which rigs elections, infiltrates and controls the government, political parties, businesses, unions, churches, and other organizations. It has its own private army (more powerful than the armed forces of the state) and intelligence gathering organs (the state outsources intelligence gathering to these organs). La Cosa Fedora is run on an authoritarian basis under the leadership of the Politburo and our most enlightened leader Chris Satoru Fedorov.

Also Chris Satoru Fedorov has a bit of a personality cult...

Populi Terrae is a paradise for all those who wish to live in a democracy. The people are represented by Representative Committees on both the state and provincial level. To avoid factional infighting, those who wish to join the President's Cabinet, the upper house of our legislature, must be non-partisan. When a election occurs, the President is the only candidate on the ballot. if he is voted out, then the Representative Committees must come together to choose a new candidate to be-elected President.

The people's right to protest is protected by law and they have the right to freedom of speech, religion and expression.

Political parties are outlawed, and all the laws are made by the Phönix-Kaiserin (Phoenix Empress). The absolute royal federation is as the name implies an absolute monarchy ruling over several federal constitutes called federal realms, they in their own turn are ruled by their own government that can vary from monarchical to theocratic (though federal laws does not outlaw republics and similar local governments but to date are there none).

However despite that so are there elections recently where people are elected by the commonry to the federal court, a large advisory body that the high king according to tradition ask for guidance in larger business. However this process is far from what one could call democratic as the court is also shared by clergy appointed by the religious orders, businessmen appointed by the royal merchant guild, hereditary nobles from the great houses, and flunkies appointed by the high king himself. Even then so are the elections hardly democratic as the wealthy, and nobles are barred from voting and votes are far from one per person as older men and women have more votes than younger and military service gives more votes as do motherhood for women and even in the elected positions so are the positions hereditary would an elected official die before his term is up.

This happened when the very left leaning candidate Björk Holgerssen with suspicious Syndicalist tendencies died in a duel for seats with a rival candidate and his estranged son Holger Björkssen inherited the position and took a hardliner pro mercantilism and pro corporate position in the court rather than the more socialist/syndicalist one that the people voted for.

Darussalam officially claims to be a constitutional monarchy with a free and fair democratic process and an elected parliament.

A parliament does exist and currently as ever is under control of the Imperial nobility and financial oligarchs. Suffrage is not universal, tiered according to income and allocated for each household instead of individual. Currently, the ruling political faction is the Concentric Populists, essentially equal to liberal conservatives in barbaric polities, while the opposition is dominated by the Corporatist-Paternalists (think one-nation conservatives) and the Sublime Front (far-rightists). Thankfully I assure you dirty tricks are little used as the factions see no need to cater the whim of the gullible, ignorant masses, most of whom are practically barred from voting anyway. Free media is of little use, too, as there's no merit in "making information more available to everyone".

Representative Democracy, as known and practiced in the west on Old Earth during the 21th Century, is a concept alien to dushani society and politics. The idea that a simple majority of 51% could impose it's will on the other 49% based on the outcome of a election is as well incompatible with our values. This is also why absolute Dictatorship of a single Ruler has been a rare occurance.

Inside dushani state and society every Group and Individual has - ideally - it's place and voice alike in matters that concern him or her. They in turn form the foundation of the Dushan. Elections do exist on various levels however, they can be hardly compared to those in Western Democracies however. The Great Council is made up from various People who directly represent the interests of their respective Groups. In some ways it could be argued that dushan is a indirect Democracy because nearly every Citizen is - either due Group/Guild or terretorial - representatives - often with imperative mandate - represented in some way inside the Legislative body.

It should be mentioned though that, given the martial history of our Nation, often the Warrior Caste had historically a often a fair degree of Power. Nowadays this place has been taken by the Dushan Armed Forces and the various security and intelligence organs.

Our nation is currently a Representative Parliamentary Democracy. Any over 18 may (or may not) vote for any of the 6 candidates from the 6 parties for the presidential election. Oh, and once the resukts are in and each party gained some seats at the parliament, the parties may decide which districts should have X representatives from each party and so on. Anybody can become a candidate for district elections for their party to gain a seat at the parliament. The people at the districts can vote for the candidates of their choice from each party. To avoid low turnout, we have started establishing a program for electronic voting.

The people's freedoms are a sacred right here and they are guaranteed to have freedom of thought, expression, association, movement, religion, press, assembly and right to self-determination, liberty, and due process of the law.
Welcome to the People's Republic of Tasimah:
A religious, socialist, liberal democracy still lacking in stability.
