Technophobia In YN?

Postby Ban Pho » Sat Jan 21, 2017 5:27 am

Title is self-explanatory.

Technophobia has a strong foothold in Ban Pho, which generally is considered a backwater country by the rest of the world, especially in rural areas where citizens completely reject modernities, such as computers, cellphones and television.

Very unpopular. For a country like Devernia, and especially like Devernia, technophobia is frowned upon and you won't make any friends bragging about it (or even saying about it). This doesn't mean that Devernians treat technophobes like human scum, but regardless, you'll end up in public disgust and someone might even go "let me stop you right there" if you're lucky. Even though they were completely and flawlessly OK with technophobes, the behavior of Devernite society and even the nation itself is a repellant for technophobes. Heck, the nation itself is even run by an AI and research into robotics and AI and human genetic editing is even actively encouraged, both by society and the government.

This slight intolerance is an issue to the government towards other countries; specifically ones in the "Ye Olde Belt", a belt of countries that are known to be "medieval" in their society and culture. The government tries to not interact with this belt (and other countries with a similar society), because they don't want their relations to sour. This was since the UpdateNortain disaster, which left the public's opinion of Devernia into shambles and is the reason why the government acts such a policy to this day.

Practically nonexistent. In a territory with a climate as hostile as Ayanka, technology is one of the things that help citizens to have a good standard of living, and more and more as technology advances. Most technophobes belong to nomadic communities of natives, although for most of the nomads technology is not frowned upon.

It's quite widespread in our country for different reasons.

1.Complete lack of welfare, extremely low compassion of other people, an ability of employers to fire people on a spot without any reasons, and other things like this, make people afraid to lose a job. They know that without a job they can literally starve to death. For this reason, they hate automatization, because automatization means that some people will be fired and there is a risk to be one of them.

2.Complete lack of product safety laws means that you must be very careful while dealing with anything more or less technological. Radiation of a microwave oven can seriously harm you if you accidently forget to close its door, the engine of your car can suddenly blow up during a ride, holding a cable can give you an electric shock due to its poor isolation, a bicycle can fall apart during a tour, a gun can blow up right in your hand, etc. Buying from quality-oriented brands with good reputation helps to some degree, but they are more expensive, so many wage slaves have to forsake their own safety and buy goods from riskier brands.

3.People (both pedestrians and drivers alike) are afraid of cars because our roads are without any speed limits.

4.Complete lack of public education and povetry of the population (so many can't afford private education) means that people are afraid that they can be fired for inability to efficiently work with new more advanced and complex machines due to their lack of education and training.

5.Due to complete non-existence of environment protection laws our environment is very toxic, drinking from a river is a death sentence, it's hard to breathe outside buildings in industrial towns. People understand that factories poison the environment and hate them for this.

6.Many employers don't care much about safety of their workers, accidents resulting in a disability or even death aren't rare, so workers tend to be afraid of machines at their workplaces.

Other than that, technophobia doesn't really exist.

Hangrettya, in its ancestry, has always been an agrarian and quite religious country and it has only recently changed from the Unification, passed through the Great Change to the present day. We are not that technological modenos like that. Many still only have radio in their homes, others have televisions and computers. The Internet is becoming more widespread and soon it will be all over the country. Cell phones are not yet so widespread here, but soon they will be.
Technophobia is much greater in rural areas where there is greater dogmatic religiosity. But we are either so that modern technology diffuses among the population and we can progress gradually respecting everyone.

You may find Technophobia in many of our more rural areas where Varakili and Sami peoples insist on tradition. Aside from that, the only technophobia around more modernized areas (i.e cities) is against A.I/Robots

That the natural world must burn to fuel the fires of the industries that create such technological wonders have left us more than a little apprehensive to their adaptation, though we are not necessarily blind to their advantages, we simply lament the circumstance of their creation.

We usually welcome most scientific advancements, but are very cautious of the downsides of new tech and avoid new tech if it can be used as a surveillance device. For around a third of people, their reaction to some technological developments is "OK, but why should I replace my [INSERT SLIGHTLY OLDER TECHNOLOGY HERE] when it works perfectly well?"

Technophobia is almost nonexistent in Thyrgga due to the high level of education among the citizenry in the use and theory behind the many devices that make space-faring civilization and autarky possible. Anyone who holds such an opinion would be seen as hypocritical, especially since most Thyrggish citizens are genetically engineered and life on many of the atmosphereless, inhospitable worlds would be impossible without human life-support systems. Thus, technophobia is de facto illegal, because most of the citizenry and the government would neither appreciate nor tolerate it.

Technophobia would be a very odd thing indeed in a nation like the Imperium, where people are cybernethic beings literally manufactured by means of advanced technology and physically couldn't survive neither individually nor as a species without access to it.

That being said, a degree of technophobia still exists against self-aware AIs, most Sidhae simply being too paranoid to entrust anything to a machine with it's own mind. For applications that would need a self-aware artificial intelligence, Sidhae instead prefer hybrid intelligence, the mind of a living Sidh directly interfaced to and serving as the operating system of a computer system. This way, people are at least certain that the mind behind the machine shares their values, ethics and ideals and is at least somewhat predictable. While self-aware AIs do exist in the Imperium and aren't generally known to cause problems, the majority still view them with suspicion.

Technophobia is limited to certain "advanced" technologies.

No TurtleShroomer is scared of medicine, a computer, a television, a radio, or a cell phone. However, all TurtleShroomers are scared of the idea of a Terminator uprising or of man going too far in playing God.

TurtleShroomian law states the following in terms of robotics and advanced AI:
  • No robot or machine can pass the Turing Test.
  • No robot or machine may be truly self-learning, but it may adapt to its surroundings based on code explicitly ordered by its programmer.
  • No robot or machine may be manufactured without a clearly defined and easily accessible on/off switch that completely cuts power from the machine.
  • No self-driving automobiles or buses of any kind. No exceptions.
  • No self-driving trains, aircraft, spacecraft, or other means of transportation of any kind. No exceptions.

TurtleShroomian law states the following in terms of "playing God":
  • No human, no animal, and no sentient creatures of any kind can be cloned. Plants can.
  • No embryonic stem cell research can be conducted. Stem cell research on adult stem cells is unrestricted.
  • No creature, group, or institution in TurtleShroom can research immortality or a means to permanently cheat death.
  • Cryogenics, for the purpose of sentient immortality, is illegal.
  • No creature, group, or institution in TurtleShroom can research a means to ressurect the dead. Whosoever is caught creating zombies will be put to death or given life in prison if found guilty.
  • No medical experimentation on any sentient creature can be conducted without their fully informed, written consent. The TurtleShroomian constitution forbids "unholy experimentation against their will". The courts have found that all medical experimentation on sentient creatures is covered under this clause.
  • No sentient being may be uploaded into a computer or machine.

Needless to say, this bleeds into everyday life. TurtleShroom is known for being a technological backwater. With the exception of its medical field, all other aspect of TS life are ten to fifty years behind the rest of Nationstates.

People in general in the absolute royal federation generally leans towards technofobia and doing work yourself is a mark of pride while innovation in general is scoffed at, at best and viewed with suspicion at worst. Both being practices shared and encouraged by the royal authorities. That said however so are technology still something that the nation begrudgingly admit is important and the military maintain computers imported from abroad due to the lacking national production, and despite claims that good old fashioned Scanderan elbow grease is the solution to any problem so can one still find industries in the cities and tractors out in the fields next to the horses and regular blacksmiths that people prefer would be the end all need all. As a result is technology very anachronistic jumping between middle ages, the 20th century, and even the modern world and technology tend to either be camouflaged by manufacturers or approached with a great deal of mysticism and animism rather than pure reason and technology.

Requiring technology is generally seen as weakness despite some hypocrisy in the idea and people generally sneer at people using phones and cars when more reasonable things like letters and trains are available even if those are of course also technological in nature but still far more accepted by the people due to their prevalence in society.

Actually many people like listening to techno.

Okay, bad one, I know XD

Using modern technological devices is very usual in Leonoria. Risks are often considered overrated ("What? Cellphone radiation? I'm gonna cry into my beer ..."). This is backed by the fact that usual side effects on society (like 'filming instead of helping' or 'running into people because of distraction' or 'getting careless because of being busy texting') are surprisingly rare, which might be caused by our culture.

So, technophobia is rare to non-existent. The Amish people are mostly joked about (I doubt any of them will read this, so ... :D )

New gun tech is always welcome (this should not surprise).
