The Last Lights: A Cyberpunk RP

IC Thread

One century after the discovery of an alien vessel in Antarctica, one would think that humanity would have used the technology for its betterment. In some cases, it has: medical technology has advanced considerably to the point of eliminating most diseases in the wealthiest parts of the world; nuclear fusion and renewable energy sources have become so efficient as to eliminate the need for petroleum for infratructural use, in countries that can afford them; and advances in space travel have allowed the most powerful of nations to reach the stars and imperialize the Solar System as we know it. Back home on Earth, however, humankind has much more pressing issues. Poverty is rampant and more stratifying than ever; with advancements in the fields of cybernetics and genetics, those who go without some form of the two are likely to be without employment--even those who do often find that there simply are not enough jobs. The two most prominent powers of the day--the United North American States, and the Sino-Russian Confederation--are in the midst of a decades long cold war, and the Middle East has descended into unrepentant lawlessness and tribalism...

In the year 2018, scientists unearthed the first confirmed alien vessel--christened the Absolution--in Antarctica. Finding no alien life aboard, the scientists began to research the technology inside; since the team was multi-national, no one country benefitted unilaterally from the reports and findings that they sent back--and, they were fascinating. Technology that humans could only dream of before lay in their hands: fusion energy, nanite medical technologies, and marvels of space travel lay inside the ship; the scientists were like children in a candy store. The first technologies to see replication were those that dealt with energy production; nuclear fusion stations began to pop up in the industrialized world rapidly, while others went with more immediately available renewable sources. Soon enough, however, the medical technologies became available: first to government organizations and militaries, then to the general public. Cybernetics became the norm for prosthesis, and nanite "cure-all" vaccines became the gold standard against most disease by the year 2025.

In 2028, after many years of financial instability, the countries of the Middle East began to unravel. Saudi Arabia was the first to fall, but the rest of the region descended into anarchy and infighting soon enough. The renaissance of energy technology ruined their oil-based economies, and regional warlords or religious zealots were swept into power; attempts at quelling the violence in the region have been meager at best.

2032 saw the development of the first genetically engineered baby. Born in China, the newborn child was the subject of immediate controversy both at home and internationally. Two seperate movements cropped up in response to the issue; the Post-Humanists, and the Naturalists. In general, the Post-Humanists saw no issue with the advent of genetic engineering or cybernetic enhancement, while the Naturalists were opposed to those things at varying levels; the extremists of both camps wanted irrevocable legislation to make one or the other the norm. After a series of bombings and shootings at clinics and hospitals that provided the aforementioned services, the Naturalists proved to be easy scapegoats, and were subsequently barred from public discussion internationally with few exceptions.

The year 2048 saw the first of the world's super-nations form: out of concerns over economic stability and military security, the nations of Europe agreed to form a more binding compact than the present day European Union. The result of the discussions, the European Federation, was the first time in the continent's history that such an agreement had been made. In face of these same concerns, the countries of North America followed suit in 2054, and Eastern Europe, Russia, China, and Asia Minor formed the Sino-Russian Federation in 2055 after similar rounds of discussion. The phenomenon happened over most of the world at more or less the same time, with nations in Africa, the Pacific, and Southeast Asia forming smaller and more regional federations. Somewhere along the way, the tensions of the past came back to haunt humanity, and the Eastern and Western blocs were at odds once more...

The Setting, Technology, and Culture of the World

The current setting for the RP is in Paris, France. As a center of culture, economics, and technology in the New First World, as well as the capital of the European Federation, the Parisian cityscape provides a lot of opportunities to plot and make mischief in. The city itself is divided into several different portions; the epicenter of the city is filled with government buildings, upscale hotels, and other iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Out from the center, we have upscale business districts and residencies--these are the areas where you're most likely to see celebrities, the wealthy, or what remains of the upper middle class--and out even further we have ghettos, refugee camps, and lower end neighborhoods that the vast majority of the city lives in. These sections of the city are dirty, dingey, and are laden with crime; most of the time, the police only bother to check up when there's a bar fight, or someone notable has been killed there.

While most of the world, on paper, adheres to some form of republican democracy, the reality is that most of the world's governements are in the pocket of multinational mega-corporations. Somewhere around 2060, much of the world started a mass business deregulation campaign--the sole exception (until 2091) was the Carribean Union. The political corruption and power grab of the wealthy was swift and unforgiving for the workers. International tensions threaten another war between the East and West, and get hours upon hours of broadcast on the news media, but more subtle tensions at home--between workers and bosses, between society and its masters--are practically unheard of on corporate and government-owned stations.

Over the past century, technology has advanced greatly due to the discoveries within the Absolution. New propulsion systems have not only made space travel possible and a routine part of any mega-corporations business, but have also made air travel about as cheap as your average bus fare, assuming you're within your country's borders. Most buildings, especially in Paris, are powered by fusion reactors outside the city; cars and ground transportation are either electric or, for more rigorous applications, powered by hydrogen cells. Nanite vaccinations are mandatory in most of the New First World and the East; not only do they kill off most diseases, but they are capable of repairing small scale wounds, internal trauma, and tissue damage; military vaccinations are capable of repairing entire limbs, given enough time.

Cybernetic enhancements have become the norm for much of the working and middle class. Most decide to have an arm or a leg, probably both, replaced before they leave high school, although some have cybernetics in place since childhood due to disease or other medical issues. While synthetic skin is the norm, especially in more formal or business, a portion of lower class citizens wear their cybernetics without any kind of covering. The most common cybernetic replacements include arms, legs, hands, and certain organs like hearts and lungs.

On the other hand, genetic engineering has become the gold standard among the political and wealthier classes. While most genetic engineering is still done while the fetus is still in the womb, newer and more experimental methods have cropped up to allow post-birth genetic alteration.

With globalization and internationalism at an all time high, urban areas are become more and more of a melting pot of different cultures. Language has evolved quite a bit over the past century, and, in some areas, languages have fused together and created odd hybrids; for the most part, however, human languages are still distinct from one another. In Europe, secularism in the workplace and in public is the norm, while elsewhere it varies greatly. Class and social stratification is an evergrowing concern among academics, but politicians and the wealthy have little care for it. Humans without genetic or cybernetic augmentation are exceedingly rare in the year 2124, and most of them are in the Middle East or the global South. Popular slang terms for those with genetic and cybernetic augmentations are "Genies" and "Cys" (Says), respectively.

Hello ladies, gentlemen, and those of non-binary gender, and welcome to a little cyberpunk RP I like to call "The Last Lights." The setting is, with the original creator's blessing and some re-writing, a copy of a previous RP called Humanity Never Learns. While we may tour around the world if this goes far enough, the setting of this RP is in the dystopian future of Paris, France. Feel free to ask questions if you have any. Here are ze rules:

Rules
1. Obey the OP.
2. Obey the Co-OPs.
3. Feel free to make any character you like (within reason).

Nation Name: Saint Ryvern
Character Name: Alden Mulcaster
Nationality: American
Affiliation: Himself
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Augments, if any: Cybernetic eyes that allow him to take literal mental pictures of things that can be stored and printed; they measure angles, velocity, distance, and many other things that is displayed right in the field of vision; they give him impeccable vision, which can allow him to zoom in and out of objects, they are powerful enough to serve as a rudimentary magnifying glass. His left arm is also cybernetic, it grants him some extra strength on that side, but nothing extraordinary. He does not wear synthetic skin over it because he thinks it looks badass.
Appearance: Alden Mulcaster but his left arm looks like this.
Personality: Alden feels like he is living on the run; he is. Due to his career choice he is often the subject of persecution by people he has bamboozled. Because of this he has developed into someone who can very easily shed the bonds he has with other people, if he even takes the time to form any sort of bonds with a person at all. The poverty that has followed him all of his life has led him to be a very thrifty person, in all regards, emotionally, financially, and physically. Alden uses only what he needs, whether that’s with money or the emotional gain he sees he can draw out of a person. This sounds insincere, and it is, he’s an insincere person. He hates how much of the prosperity in his life has depended on the kindness of others, and seeks to live in a position where he does not need anyone's help in order to be successful.
Weapons: Just a pocket knife he carries on him. He had a gun but the medical authorities took it off his person following the bar fight that left him in need of a cybernetic arm.
Profession: Alden is a professional hustler. His eyes make him exceptional at darts and pool, two games commonly played in bars, where he finds most of his victims. Card games are something he has naturally excelled at since his father first taught him how to play Euchre. He makes most of his money off of darts and pool, but sometimes when he’s feeling lucky he’ll risk trying to hustle a group of guys playing cards.
Character History: Born in the American megacity of Chicago, Alden never knew a life of privilege. His parents were both extremely poor, they certainly could not afford to have a son, much less a son who was born blind due to a rare genetic birth defect. Still, his parents were incredibly industrious and worked every day from dusk until dawn to provide their son with a better life. Finally, after six years of living without sight, Alden’s parents were able to afford the down payment on a loan to pay for his cybernetic eyes. Little Alden did not know at the time that his father took the loan from a card shark at the seedy bar in their neighbourhood, he was just fascinated by the visual world and all the bonuses his eyes brought him.

Things progressed well for a few years, the Mulcaster household did not grow any more, but that was only because Alden’s factory working father and prostitute mother could not afford to have any more children. He was parented very little in his childhood, only learning the value of money from how well his parents managed theirs. At least they did this until Alden’s father lost his job to a man with two cybernetic arms that could work twice as fast. Everything went downhill then, as the family quickly could not make their payments to the card shark, who soon came knocking to see what was wrong. Unable to provide a satisfactory explanation Alden’s father was brutally beaten by the shark’s gang, sending him to the hospital where he died from his wounds, not receiving treatment because the medical authorities knew he could not pay for anything. The card shark did not intend to kill Alden’s father, so he took pity on the boy and his mother. Provided with cheap housing above a bar that shark ran, the mother-son duo made their way in life. His mother was rarely at home during the day, and oftentimes working at night, so Alden hung out in the bar below their residence. Here, in his early teen years, he learned that he was exceptionally dispositioned to excel at pool and darts. He even began hustling older, drunken men by the time he was 13 since they were intoxicated and did not believe a child could best them at “their own game.”

After accumulating a fair sum of money in five years of hustling people as a teenager Alden decided to move out. His mother had found respectable work and he did not want to be a financial burden on her anymore. Moving away from Chicago he found his way to the city of Indianapolis, eventually moving on to New York in an effort to run away from some he hustled that he should not have. Unfortunately, that person caught up with him one day underneath the neon sign of a pool bar and let Alden have a piece of his mind, and fists. The individual happened to have a cybernetic torso, and in their rage misused their brute strength to rip one of Alden’s arms off. Mortified the person ran Alden to a hospital and left the boy a large sum of money in order to pay for the cybernetic arm with the understanding in mind that Alden would not attempt to hunt them down or sue. Angry at himself when he awoke and gracious only that the person left him some money, Alden was simply glad he could still play pool. After hustling at several bars and casinos in New York for a few years Alden decided that he should move to a new city for some fresh fools. Paris seemed as good a place as any, and for several months he has been draining money from the drunken fools at a pool bar named the “Green Flamingo” hidden deep within the shady districts of town.
RP Example: Here you go
--------Optional Information--------
Theme Song: I’ve never been good at finding these, so I’m going to skip this part.
Likes: Making a fool out of other people, money, other people’s money, taking other people’s money after making a fool out of them, Hot Pockets (or whatever the equivalent of a Hot Pocket is in the world of this roleplay)
Dislikes: Having a fool made out of himself, not having money, blood, surgery, having to confront his emotions, people who don’t have to worry about money

Also, the first of my apps, in case anyone's curious:

Nation Name: Corvus Metallum
Character Name: Amaya Ibáñez
Nationality: Carribean
Affiliation: Various revolutionary organizations, herself.
Gender: Female
Age: 35

Augments, if any: Cybernetic eyes that look and feel natural. The eyes translate most texts into her native Spanish, and had the capability to act as range finders, cameras, and other useful gadgets when she first got them; however, aside from the text translation, most of these are deactivated permanently for various reasons; the left one is currently broken, and she is unable to see out of it until repairs are made, or it is replaced.

Appearance: Clothing will vary. Currently, she wears a bandage over her left eye.

Personality: A natural chatter box, she can talk all day about a wide variety of topics--food, engineering, her own misadventures, and many other subjects--and really has no sense of when to shut up until someone tells her to. She is also a flirt. Be it a kiss on the cheek, a few well placed compliments, or something else, if Amaya finds someone attractive, she will make it known that she is interested. More often than not, it's nothing but playful teasing and she rarely takes it any further than that if the "victim" happens to be someone she knows; partially because she doesn’t want to sour any friendly relations she may have, and partially because her personal drive and desire for change in the world disallow her to be weighed down by heavily involved relationships. Due to this, she rarely forms relationships that amount to anything beyond friendship. Her propensity to flirt and avoid involved relationships could suggest to the uninformed that she never allows herself to form something other than a casual friendship, but if one actually takes notice of how she interacts with her running mates and familiars, it becomes clear that she is perfectly capable of forming meaningful platonic relations with others. At times, she can be vain and selfish, often while she is under a great amount of pressure or emotional stress; most of her business partners, past and present, have regarded her as as generous and humorous in her demeanor, even if she is a stern figure.

As much as she loves to talk about her interests in a wide variety of subjects, the one topic she keeps mum about is her family life. Whether it be because of uncomfortable and/or traumatizing memories, or she doesn't want to bore someone with personal details and stories is impossible to know for sure...although her reactions appear to indicate the former. If someone continues to question her about the subject, she becomes irate, and then outright furious if they continue beyond that. In her normal speaking voice, she has a slight accent when speaking in English. When drunk, irate, or in a state of mind that could not otherwise be considered normal, her accent becomes thicker and more noticeable; when she is visibly angry, she stops using the common language altogether and begins speaking in her native Spanish as, by that point, she no longer cares if no one can understand her.

Weapons: A karambit knife is always on her, and she frequently carries a .38 Special snub-nose with her as well.

Profession: Smuggler of medical goods and technology, socialist/anarchist revolutionary.

Character History: Not a lot is known about Amaya’s history before she turned fifteen, when she was taken in by a Catholic priory off the streets of Havana. At some point during her stay in with the church, she learned how to read and write, as well as a basic education in math, science, and so forth—something that most in the Caribbean lacked after the collapse of the Union’s welfare state—and also received the set of cybernetic eyes that are now in her skull. At the age of twenty three, she left the church organization for a variety of reasons (she was agnostic, at most) and began her career in smuggling; while her first adventures mainly dealt with illicit drugs and the usual contraband that would get most in jail, she shifted her focus soon after to getting medical supplies and other hard-to-get technologies into countries that were effectively blacklisted by corporations and their puppet states. About six years ago, she got caught up in events surrounding the bombing of a high-profile business meeting; the authorities detained her, and attempted to summarily imprison her without trial due to several international warrants for her arrest, but she managed to escape during transport and has kept low ever since.

Considering that most go for ones that resemble normal eyes, it's hard to tell the difference really. That being said, Amaya has her left eye bandaged up since the eye itself doesn't work, and there's bruising and broken skin around it. :P

You're worried about the trouble my character could get into. I can't wait to see what you're revolutionary gets tied up in.

I am thinking about either making the owner of a Entertainment firm or a Defense Contracting company.

I would go with the entertainment firm owner. Solely so that you have the opportunity, nay, the obligation, to have your character say "Are you not entertained?!" at some point.

I've got some stuff cooking, don't you worry. First, however, we need more peeps...and I need to make a couple more characters/NPCs, too.

I'm very new (as you can tell by my post count) to forum roleplay. So I'm not going to create multiple characters.

I got a few questions. Firstly, is the Council (Lets call them the Illuminati) that controls the world still exist? Second, is one of the story threads in the original, the Grey Flood, still on the cards or is it gonna be dismissed from the story? Also can I be a Co-OP?
