Your nation's language's writing system(s)

Postby Voimare » Thu Jan 12, 2017 6:16 pm

Nations of NationStates- what are the writing systems for your language(s)? Are they written from right to left, left to right, up to down and left to right? Are they alphabets, syllabaries, abjads, abugidas? Do you have more than one writing system for the same language? Is there any historical context behind your nation's writing systems that you find significant? If you have more than one writing system in your nation, are signs displayed in both? All? Only one? Or maybe you don't have signs...?

Latin. Our former system was called Old Jovian, and used a special alphabet, which is currently not used but our colony, Croysos uses it.

As our official languages are English, Japanese, and Russia, it should be no surprise that our predominant writing systems are the Latin alphabet, Japanese kana, Japanese kanji, and the Cyrillic alphabet.

One unique thing about writing systems in our nation is that, even though the Cyrillic alphabet is legally recognized when it comes to Russian and is taught in schools, it's incredibly common for Russian to be written entirely using the Latin alphabet.

In addition, Hangul is used to write in Korean which, while not an official language, is the most common foreign language here.

Lancovian has a Cyrillic and a Latin alphabet. Both are written left to right. Both systems evolved and were standardized roughly side by side, but the cyrillic was declared official during the First Empire. The Latin alphabet fell into disuse outside of certain regions, but was resurrected to better fit in with a computing world that heavily favors Latin characters. Both are taught in schools alongside one another but there is a small and controversial movement within the Lancovian Language Academy that wants to slowly phase out the Cyrillic alphabet.

Signage uses the local preference, but never use both scripts. Since everyone understands both systems, writing something in Latin script and then again in Cyrillic (or vice versa) is seen as redundant. An exception is police vehicles, which have both "Polis" and "Полици" written on them, and other public services do the same. The government has a rule that all physical publications it produces must use Cyrillic script, and this practice is followed in the private publishing sector to a large degree. Meanwhile, most everything written electronically by anyone uses the Latin alphabet. You would have to search for a long time to find a Lancovian keyboard with Cyrillic characters.

Foreign programs that teach Lancovian almost never teach the Cyrillic alphabet, which is why almost none are accredited by the Lancovian Language Academy. (which insists on equal status.) This has led to many Lancovian-speaking tourists wondering if they're in the right country upon arriving in Lancov and seeing Cyrillic everywhere.

A recent survey revealed that while a small majority of Lancovians prefer the Latin alphabet, only 9% would like the Cyrillic to be phased out.

Both Latin and Cyrillic (romanization is based on German though). You can find the use of Armenian, Georgian and Arabic in Southern Russia, but they are rarely ever used in official documents.

The Cyrillic script is the predominant script used in Veistorne. Minority languages have mostly converted to using Cyrillic, but some still use their own scripts.
This nation is no longer known in-character as "Astana States", instead it is to be referred to as Veistorne/Vislistranya.

The Korean writing system is used, but sentence structure is the same as English (noun/pronoun -> verb -> adjective). The language itself is a big ole' mess of Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, Finnish, Russian, English, Norwegian, Hungarian, French, and Icelandic. The main influences would be Japanese, Finnish, French, and English.

While the Korean letters are used, the sounds are not the same whatsoever, with the exception of 어 which is said as eo/uh/o. There's also a few additions--and by a few I mean 48--taken from Japanese hiragana and katakana, but morphed so it matches the Korean aesthetic.

It's a clustertruck to anyone in the real world but Lanomirans find it incredibly easy to learn, as was intended. It's best to learn the language by forgetting everything you thought you knew about any language and going from there.

Our official languages are German and Czech, both are Latin-written and read from left to right. Both spellings are based on the standard spellings in the mainlands (German in Leonoria uses the spelling rules after the 1996 spelling reform in Germany and Austria). The writing of dialects and creoles varies. However since, next to Hungarian and Slovak, Ukrainian is a recognized minority language, Standard Ukrainian and Ukrainian creole dialects appear in Cyrillic.

Japanese is, obviously, written with a mixture of kana and kanji.

Korean is, obviously, written using hangul.

Mandarin is, obviously, written using traditional Chinese characters.

Latin is, obviously, written using the Latin alphabet.

The Holoskan Empire has two official systems of writing: the Alphabet and the Runa. The Runa is the oldest writing system in Aurinel, as its blocky, angular shapes were excellent for carving into a tablet, which served as the first written records in Aurinel's history. As time went on, the Runa began to be changed and altered until it had evolved into the Alphabet, which is analogous to the Latin Alphabet. After nearly falling completely out of use, the rise of the Holoskan Empire saw the resurgence of the Runa, as it was seen as being part of the identity of the Anthro race, along with the Anthraic language. Since then, the Runa has become much more widely used and known. And looking at the Runa, several of the runes can be identified as precursors of letters in the Alphabet.

One note about the Runa is that while Anthraic in the Alphabet makes use of large numbers of diacritics, whereas the Runa is written without any accents. In the Runa, the pronunciation of a word is implied with its spelling, as there are almost no homographs in Anthraic.

Prior to 1894, Hyggematic, which is a Germanic language, was written with the Greek Alphabet, with the retention of ϝ or digamma, representing /w/. At the beginning of the literate age, writing was done boustrophedon (horizontally and in alternating direction), but later it shifted to uniform left-to-right. There was no spacing between words until the medieval era, which lasted between 350 and 1350.

<α β γ δ ε ϝ ζ η θ ι κ λ μ ν ξ ο π ρ σ τ υ φ χ ψ ω>

According to Greek custom, smooth breathing, represented by a comma-like diacritic above a vowel letter, is written for all initial vowels. The rough breathing is not used because there are no h- initials in Hyggematic. Technically this makes the smooth breathing unnecessary, but it remained mandatory until the official abolition of the Greek Alphabet.

In 1892, the state legislature passed an act replacing it with the Roman Alphabet, seeing it as a more modern and versatile writing system than the Greek standard at that time. The new standard did not come into force until Jan. 1, 1895. The new alphabet was as follows.

<a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z>

Native Hyggematic words do not use the <q> letter, as it is adequately represented by the combination <kw>. The letter <j> only occurs in the oblique forms of the word degom (Gen. jmes, Dat. jmei), as it represents the "zeta psilon", or "simple z", pronounced as /z/, as opposed to the normal zeta, which was vocalized as /zd/.
