The Stone Staircase - Ancient Civilization RP

Image

The temple buzzes with activity, the umber brown stone of it's walls seeming to thud in time with the steps of the multitude, relieved by the gods in the half-humid warmth of the harvest. The local farmers had brought in their produce. Stone shelves are filled with sacks of grain, with wheels of sheep's cheese and with freshly carved meat, from the few animals slaughtered for the oncoming winter. Tomorrow, the young man would oversee the local villagers bring in baskets of fruit and nuts, and the next day he would sit with the priests and lead them in a feast to mark the oncoming winter. Among the throng, a young man stands, his hair in long black ringlets, and in his hands a tablet of drying clay. He rests for a moment to take note of the markings upon the tablet. Only simple check marks for now, but soon enough he would begin to note them in more detail. He would record who had brought in which sacks of wheat, which of the local elders owned the most, and in many years he would be the first to use a few simple pictograms, representing only simple sounds and words, to begin to write down the first story, a tale of a warrior to tell his sons.

He is not alone, as the first written words begin to appear like fledglings in the spring sky. He rests in a temple by a river, though it does not matter where, while others lie upon islands in the wine dark sea, in temples along great rivers, or hidden among mountain valleys. Though none of them yet know it, they have started a fire that will spread and rise across all the world. Civilization.

Hello There everyone! This is a simple enough premise, just that civilization began in a few more places than in our own world. As far as we're concerned, civilization Begins on Krete, in Sumeria, in Elam, on the Bosphorous and on the Po River, though outside of the our area of concern it also became more diverse, appearing in Norte Chico, China, and in a few places different than our own timeline that will be discovered as needed. We will be playing, to begin with, Italy to the Iranian Plateau. The most advanced civilizations will be found in Sumer and Elam, and the further from those places you start, the less sophisticated you will be.

In this game, you will each be playing as among the first civilized states in the world, with the game beginning around 3000BC. In most ways this will simply be a game of nation roleplaying as usual, set in the Ancient world, but with a few mechanics added for fun. But first, the Rules.

1.I will make it clear that I am neither ignorant of Ancient history, nor a qualified historian of the period, so I will sometimes make mistakes, but will also maintain some semblance of historical accuracy/common sense.
2. You are among the first states that has ever existed, act like it. There has not yet been time for sophisticated government to emerge, and we are so early in history that the boot has quite literally not yet been invented. Armies will be small and armed with at the very most simple bronze equipment.
3. Posts should be of a decent length, with proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Super simple stuff.
4. Be polite where possible in the OOC, though feel free to commit grievous looting and murder as needed in the IC. All fair in Roleplay and War.
5. Saying that, obviously abide by NS rules and try to keep things at least vaguely appropriate for those who could be reading it.
6. Have fun, write some good posts, and build a great big communal story.

Right, with that done, onto the mechanics.

Resources: Some provinces will have resources assigned to them when settled and claimed. These resources can be traded, used, transferred or whatever else you want to use them for. Think of it this way, if you have copper and your ally has tin, you two can produce bronze and share it, allowing you to arm your men in bronze and make them more effective. Resources can be "used" three times, allowing their owner and two others to use them.

War: I will help manage any battles, starting an extra thread for the combatants, allowing each of them to state their formation and tactics to me by telegram before being posted, at which point I'll determine the success or failure of maneuvers and give over the results, allowing the combatants to move on and fight from their new position in the same manner, until either side achieves victory or gives up.

Technology: If you support scholars, or have a scholarly tradition in your nation, you'll likely discover more technology over time. Civilizations that survive on fishing will develop finer nets, and farmers will invent things like the plough.

And now, onto the application. There are two ways you can do this. You can either post the full application and be told your resources after acceptance, or you can reserve a location, I'll give you some resources, and then you can factor them in to your civilization's economy.

Application:
Nation Name:
Name(s) of Ruler(s):
Form of Government:
Description of People: (How do your people look, what do they wear, what sort of architecture do you use? A basic description of your culture)
History: (Where do your people believe they came from? Remember, recorded history is in it's infancy, and any history will have been passed down through legends and stories.)
Religion: (A description of your peoples religious beliefs)
Description of your Economy: (How do your people subsist? Farming, Pastoralism? What crops are grown? Is alcohol produced? What about artisans, traders and settlements?)
Location: (Please choose a province or two to begin your civilization in from the map, found here: (http://imgur.com/gRaxZwe))
Colour: (Your colour for the map)
Military Strength and Composition: (Be reasonable, and give a decent description. The very first militaries are currently forming, almost entirely militia based and small, armed with simple weaponry. Sumeria currently holds the top spot militarily, with a few of the richest cities fielding men in a phalanx, with copper tipped spears and full body shields.

Map and Claims

Image

Please Note: The Larger provinces around Armenia are so large because they are much less fertile, and populated by pastoral tribes more than by farming villages, as with Sumer, Egypt, Krete, the Bosphorous, and The lands around the Po Valley. Southern Italy, Mainland Greece and Much of Anatolia are similarly populated by tribesmen, though they will develop as the game moves on

Application:
Nation Name: The City of the Mother
Name(s) of Ruler(s): The Divinity, a council led by the Head Priestess of the Mother
Form of Government: Theocratic matriarchy
Description of People: The people of the City are of mixed heritage. Many are of Bosporous origin, hailing from the Turkish Straights, who are mostly herders of animals and live in small villages that dot the landscape. There is, however, a presence of Minoans, who form the backbone of the City of the Mother on the Makria Mallia peninsula. They control the area economically, and have spread their religion far and wide. Most people in the countryside do follow a version of the Minoan religion, be it co-opted and changed to fir their own cultural needs. Minoan is the language of the upper classes, while the various villages each speak in their own dialect. Merchants generally have to be bilingual to work anywhere. The mines are generally worked by the Bosporans, and owned by Minoan masters who had the technology to mine the copper.
History: According to the only written records available, the lands occupied by the City of the Mother used to be barren and deserted, inhabited by lawless tribes of heathens who ate their children and sacrificed to false gods. They didn’t know how to use the land properly, which withered away under their godless rule. Minoan settlers from the island of Crete came, now nearly a hundred years ago, and brought law, order, writing and true civilisation with them. These Minoans then farmed the land, dug the earth for her wealth and built the Great City, the City of the Mother, in honour of their chief divine. These settlers were largely religious in nature, believing to have fled from Crete in a political dispute. These settlers erected the temple-palace on the First Hill of Makria Mallia, building a fort on the Second Hill, and constructing a town between the two. Since then, the port of the City has been a centre of trade in copper and other resources, the main source of income for the city.
Religion: The Minoan religion is mainly matriarchal in nature, and very politically motivated. The High Priestess is basically a queen, presiding over her citizens and having a duty to safeguard their moral wellbeing. This is done through the apparent interpretation of the Will of the Goddesses, whose will is shown through the intensive study of nature, preferably through philosophy and the sciences. Priests spend their days observing, calculating, managing and writing down all they come across, discussing these matters in the Divinity, the ruling council. Meanwhile, the Bosporans follow an inspired religion. They mostly follow natural spirits and a loose pantheon of gods, different per town you come across. These gods and goddesses are distinct for each region and chiefly concern nature and her workings. Towns near the mountains will pray to stone gods more, while fishing villages have much more to do with the Lady of Waters.
Description of your Economy: The economy is broadly separated into two parts. The urban economy is chiefly worked by artisans and merchants, and mostly based around the commodity ofcopper and services. Most people either work in the docks, or work on something related to the docks. Fisheries, shipyards, drinking places, places of worship, the ‘factories’ and smiths that exist throughout the town, most use the maritime economy to flourish. Meanwhile, the economy outside the city rests mainly around farming, and selling edibles to the city. This includes herding, farming, and the growing of grapes and wool for textiles. The economy outside the city is pretty primitive, not yet accustomed to using coinage or anything of the sort.
Location:
Image
Colour: Yellow
Military Strength and Composition: There is no such thing as a standing army. The closest thing to that are probably the City Guard, who operate from the Fort, and the Temple Guard, who operate from the temple-palace. They maintain order, and are mostly equipped to deal with petty crimes and the like, as well as civilian unrest. The city guard is armed with crude wicker shields and copper tipped spears, with some carrying slings. The palace guards are more decked out, with wooden shields and spears tipped with copper. They wear small copper plates as armour, but their overall armour consists more of light leather. Their helmets are made from leather, too, adorned with feathers from various birds to indicate rank.
Ready and Willing to get started?: Ready and waiting.

Just a few comments. First, your resource is copper. Not Bronze. Bronze is not a resource, it is produced via the alloying of copper and tin. You currently do not have any tin with which to make bronze, making it impossible for your troops to be equipped with it. Also, obviously, the section on Bronze being mined doesn't make sense. Do also note that without bronze, long bladed weapons such as Khopesh are basically impossible. Otherwise, the application looks good. I like the economic base, the dichotomy between the Bosporans and the Minoans, and the idea of theocratic matriarchy having evolved beyond a primitive state to join in on the world's stage, in contrast to our own history. Make some adjustments based on the presence of only copper, and you should be good to go.

Application:
Nation Name: Kubara
Name(s) of Ruler(s): King
Form of Government: Kingdom
Description of People: The people of Kubara have a dark complexion being similar to the people of Egypt and Israel in their skin tone. Black hair is the most common color within the nation-state but brown hair is not uncommon for the people as well. A beard is seen as a status symbol by the people of Kubara leading to many of the men to keep beards. With a small amount of exceptions, the people of Kubara have brown eyes.
The predominate material used for clothing is linen with women usually wearing a dress down to around the knees while men usually wear a kilt of Linen leaving their chests uncovered. During cold spells or bad weather, a coat made of wool is worn as well. The richer parts of Kubaran society usually will have their linen dyed if they can afford it while the lower classes simply have the base white of the linen.
The architecture of the Kubarans is made using stone cut by copper chisels. The cities themselves have the Royal Palace or a administrative building and the temple at their center with the temples usually mainly dedicated to either the god of the sea or the goddess of the earth. The next area would be filled with the houses of the wealthier members of society followed by the markets and open gardens. The most outer area behind the walls, which can range from primitive stone walls to wooden palisades, is home to the poorer parts of society along with the military. Additionally, outside the walls can be home to specialty craftsmen and of course the farmers. If the city has a port, then that area is usually walled around the sides and then walled from the rest of city to prevent sea raiders from entering the city proper.
The people of Kubara can neither be called peaceful or warlike truly as their main focus is trade, farming and mining. War is done in most situations only when attacked or to acquire more materials for trade. Due to their focus on trade, the people of Kubara can also be said to be excellent shipbuilders though most wood for the shipbuilding is imported from the Levant.
Another curious fact of the Kubarans is that they have no succession laws about gender leading to the king's first child, whether son or daughter, being heir to the throne. There have been cases however where the king has made his heir a later born child due to the first child's death or incompetence.
History: The people known as the Kubarans are said to have come to Cyprus thousands of years ago from the Anatolian mainland. They eventually settled on the northern coast but would migrate to the southwest over the several thousand years they would be on the Island. The people would establish two major settlements, on the coast known as Samera and one near the mountain range called Kubar. Samera would become their port of trade while Kubar would be the major place mining for copper. Since a major component of bronze is copper, they would be called by the Sumerian word for bronze Kubar. These two cities form the core of the Kubaran kingdom and establish hegemony over western Cyprus. Over the many years of their development, minor cities have developed from surrounding villages but their main centers still remain the capitol of Samera and the Industrial hub of Kubar.
Religion: The religion of the Kubarans is a Pantheon of gods with the two main gods being the god of the Sea Pontis and the goddess of the Earth Bellia. The other major gods include the god of the sky Tyga, the goddess of war Atlanta, the goddess of Hearth and Home Astana, and Histis, god of the forge. These six make up the major pantheon of the Kubaran gods and their are hundreds more minor ones that are worshipped as household gods or village deities as well. With the Temple at the center of every city, it is obviously that religion is very important to the Kubarans and they believe any bad harvest was due to offending the gods. The main religious authority are the council of priests with head priest of each major god on the council. This council, though holding no power officially, has great sway with the people leading to disagreements between them and the rulers frequently.
Description of your Economy: Farming is one of the main trade of the Kubarans with crops such as wheat, olives, flax, grapes and others grown across the land. The bountiful sea is also a major source of foodstuff for the Kubarans leading to a thriving fishing industry. The slopes of the mountains are the main place of grape growth and also the center of the Kubaran wine industry. Wine was introduced to the island by traders from the Levant and the land of Cyprus proved to be able to handle the process quite well. The Kubar wine is one of the main trade goods exported from Samera which is the second major aspect of the Kubaran economy. Trade mainly takes place at the port of Samera though smaller ports also do receive some business. The mined copper is a major trade good as well being exported across the seas and those not exported, being bought by Kubaran craftsmen to make bronze. Without a steady access to tin however, this small bronze industry must really on small shipments from traders until a suitable trading partner is found. The final primary aspect of the Kubaran economy is mining. The copper mined from the mountain mines is taken from Kubar to Samera to be exported, made into copper weapons, or made into bronze.
Location:
Image

Colour: Crimson
Military Strength and Composition: The soldiers of Kubar are usually armed with copper tipped spears and small wooden or wicker shield with a auxiliary corps armed with bows or slings. There armor is usually a leather tunic reinforced with some cloth padding. The closest thing there is to a standing army is the king's guard which are 10 highly trained individuals who are trained to protect the king. They can be identified by the copper battle axes they carry in addition to their spears. Otherwise, each city or village will make their own militia to protect the city and keep order. These militias are Kubar's main source of soldiers and gather at the king's call if their spears are needed.
Ready and Willing to get started?: Aye Aye Capitan

Pretty much done with this. Anywhere need to be expanded or replaced? And if anyone was wondering, I used the Sumerian word for Bronze Kubar because the word for Copper is Zubar and Kubar sounds better.

Application:

Nation Name: Keftias

Name(s) of Ruler(s): Minos. Later historians will assume that Minos was a specific person, but in truth, that is the title of the ruler of Keftias. Furthermore, most actual power is held by the High Priestess of the Great Mother, with the Minos being merely a figurehead.

Form of Government: Keftias is a theocratic monarchy. Actual power is mostly wielded by the High Priestess of the Great Mother, and by extension the priesthood class. However, the government does not interfere a great deal in the daily lives of the people. They are mostly concerned with gathering resources to support themselves, and the people in times of hardship. The head of state is the Minos, who is the son of the High Priestess and/or the previous Minos, mimicking the relationship of the Great Mother and the Earthshaker, and their son the Boy God (see Religion below). Curiously, the Minos does not take power when the old one dies, but when the prince reaches the age of nine, by which time the boy is highly likely to live to adulthood and bear heirs of his own. The reason for this is to best embody the Boy God, of whom the Minos is his earthly avatar.

Description of People: The people of Keftias are essentially the Prepalatial Minoans, if that means anything to you.
Physically, the Keftians look much like most people living around the Mediterranean. They mostly have light brown skin, brown eyes, and wavy black hair. They tend to have slender figures.
Their typical garb consists of loincloths and kilts for men, and knee to ankle-length skirts (often in multicoloured patterns) for women. Most clothing is made of linen or wool. Richer colours and more elaborate patterns and cuts are worn by those with wealth and status. Most everyone goes barefoot and barechested, and those working in dirty or wet professions are often nude. However, some wear simple sandals, and cloaks may be donned to protect against cold or rainy weather. Priests and priestesses wear more elaborate robes or dresses. Jewelry is often worn by both genders. Hair is worn in a variety of styles, often including long locks and braids for both genders. Men prefer to shave off their facial hair.
Buildings are mostly of wattle and daub or mudbrick with wood frames, but they have begun working in stone. Buildings have square and rectangular shapes, and have flat roofs. Buildings can be up to three storeys high. They build small shrines to the gods, but not full temples, and apart from remote rural shrines are usually incorporated into an otherwise non-religious building. They will not begin to build palaces for some time yet. Walls and columns are often brightly painted.
There is a high degree of sexual equality in this culture, but division of labour does exist, with some professions and activities being considered masculine or feminine. Interestingly, many professions are open to both sexes, but may require one to wear the garb of the opposite gender. Keftians generally prefer trade, pleasure, and craftsmanship over warfare.

History: It is said that when the Great Mother created the world, there was only water and seafloor. So her husband the Earthshaker hewed the seabed with his great double axe, cleaving and churning the earth and causing some of it to be thrust up above the waves. This is where lands such as Crete came from. Later, the gods created men and animals to walk the earth, and these spread to wherever they could. Such was how the Keftians came to Crete.
The Keftians do not give much thought to where they came from before arriving on Crete. Crete is their home now. What else matters? Physically and culturally, they most resemble the people of Greece. Yet they also have many Asian and African characteristics. It is hard to say which continent the ancestors of the Keftians came from. Perhaps many different peoples made their way to Crete over time, and Crete’s people are the children of all three continents. It is all rather meaningless to the Keftians anyway. To them, the world consists of the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. Geographically-speaking, what makes Greece so different from Asia Minor, or the Levant from Egypt? Cultures are what truly matter, and the Keftians know that the great sea is at least as often a bridge as it is a barrier.

Religion: Keftians have a polytheistic religion. This religion bears a resemblance to Classical Greek religion, but there are a number of differences. Most notably, the chief deity is a goddess called the Great Mother. Some notable deities include (but are not limited to):
The Great Mother, from whom all was ultimately created. She is depicted as a woman in priestly or aristocratic garb holding a staff and flanked by either lions or griffons. A lone pillar is often included in depictions of her, which either stands nearby or upon which she stands.
The Earthshaker, god of the sea, of mountains, and of earthquakes, patron of smiths, and husband to the Great Mother. His symbol is the double axe, or labrys.
The White Bull, god of war, violence, and of powerful emotion. He is portrayed as either a bull or a minotaur. The bull-jumping ceremony is a quasi-religious ritual practised by the Keftians, whereby they symbolically face and overcome their enemies, both within and without.
The Boy God, the youngest and favourite child of the Great Mother. He is the god of youth, beauty, joy, and kingship. He is portrayed as a nude or regally-attired boy or young man, sometimes accompanied by the Great Mother. The Minos of Keftias is considered to be his earthly representative.
The Mistress of Beasts, who is goddess of plants, animals, the hunt, and the wild places of the world. She is portrayed as a woman in priestly or aristocratic garb in a wilderness setting, sometimes holding a bow and arrow or accompanied by a griffon or other supernatural creature.
The Snake Goddess, who is the goddess of birth, fertility, and death. She is portrayed as a woman in priestly garb with snakes either grasped in her hands or coiling around her arms.
The Mistress of the Labyrinth, goddess of knowledge, strategy, and architecture, protectress of cities and towns. Her symbol is the labyrinth.
The Dancing Lady, goddess of visions, prophecy, dreams and intoxication. She is represented as a vigorously dancing woman, often surrounded by adorers or fellow dancers. It is said that she invented wine when she cut her foot and bled into a river, which then turned to wine. She created grapes through a combination of water and her blood, and taught mortals the secret of making it.
The Mistress of the Loom, who is the goddess of cloth and textiles. She has the ability to build or unravel the power and prestige of mortals. Her symbols are the spider, the saffron flower, and the golden ball of thread. She is honoured with sacrifices of fine dresses or figurines depicting the same.

Description of your Economy:
Most Keftians live in rural homesteads or in small towns. The people subsist on farming, fishing, and herding, occasionally taking wild game or plants.
Common crops include wheat, flax, grapes, barley, fruit trees such as olives, figs, dates, and pomegranates, and flowers such as saffron, poppy, lily and, crocus. Typical livestock animals include cows, goats, sheep, pigs, and geese. Dogs and cats are kept as pets and for hunting and pest control respectively. Fishing plays an important part of the economy, and people get most of their protein from seafood. Logging is also a major industry, as Crete is heavily forested at this time. The island is home to a variety of woods including cedar, poplar, and cypress.
Common secondary products include unleavened bread, cheese, olive oil, wine, beer, linen, wool, dyes, and woodwork. Due to Keftias’s maritime environment, the Keftians have become rather adept at building and handling ships.
Crete has little in the way of ore deposits, so most metal has to be imported. Keftian smiths know how to work bronze, but due to the scarcity of tin, most tools, weapons, and armour are made of copper. A few stone tools are still in use, but have been almost completely phased out in favour of metal ones.

Military Strength and Composition: The military of Keftias mostly consists of town-based militia or private guards, with no central command structure. There is not usually much of a standing army, but in times of war, all able-bodied men can be drafted into war bands. “Naval” vessels exist as transport ships that might engage in the occasional boarding if the opportunity presents itself. Naval warfare does not yet exist as a distinct concept.
Armour is light and consists of a mixture of cloth, leather, and copper or bronze. Shields are made of wood overlaid with cowhide, and tend to be large and of a rectangular or figure 8 shape. Weaponry includes straight-bladed swords, daggers, axes (frequently double-bitted), maces, spears, javelins, slings, and bows and arrows. Most weapons are made of copper, with occasional bronze pieces for those who can afford them. Horses have not yet been introduced to Keftias, and so there are neither cavalry nor chariots.
The Keftians are not a warlike people. They rarely go out of their way to raid others, and their military is mostly for self-defence. Because they do not fight among themselves or antagonize others, and because they live on an island isolating them from all but the most skilled and determined sea raiders, the Keftians feel no need to build fortifications, and most of their settlements lack even a simple palisade.
