It's also highly amusing they take pains to point out the boy is "white" from a "predominantly white" area - why is his race so important when he only seems to have expressed views on religion?

One imagines they picked this case to make semi-public in the hopes of contradicting the idea that they're just out to get Muslims.

That's your interpretation, which I don't read at all.

A more reasonable interpretation, which I still wouldn't agree with, is the attempt to force a link between whiteness and the far right.
The interpretation I follow is to point out that PREVENT doesn't just target the darkies - or that it's just a factor that the boy is indeed white. After all, PREVENT decided it important to assign a white officer as primary contact and a non-white officer as secondary contact, so it's certainly pertinent.

LOL. From the news I have read, being black would make your race more likely to be mentioned. Many news outlets assume a reporting stance of white unless stated otherwise.
