5th Alpen View Brew Festival (Closed. Thanks for support))

Postby Neu Engollon » Mon Jan 02, 2017 11:52 pm

*** This IC Thread is now done ***

The AVBF went for 3 IC days. The beer, ales, meads, etc. categories were judged in two batches over the first two IC days. The spirits/liquors were judged on the third and final IC day. Keep in mind that this took place in August 2016, ICly. (RL delayed me greatly, but I delivered as promised...eventually.) So, it was not wintry.

WELCOME

This is your guide to the festivities and the fun making! This is the Fifth Annual Alpen View Beer Festival. If you hold this guide pamphlet in your hands, you are in our fair city of Burgunden, the main financial center and more importantly, the center for craft brewing in the Confederacy of Neu Engollon. It is by far, the largest city in the Confederacy, at over 14 Million in the greater Burgunden area. Also, this city happens to be the home to TeremBev/Burgunden Breueries, the co-main organizers and main sponsors of the event. The other main organizer is the Neu Engollon Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
There are, of course, several generous sponsors from across the Multiverse.

There is a lot to do at the Fest besides eat and sample award winning beverages. You may want to explore the rest of our peaceful, panoramic nation after the BrewFestival has ended, and there are plenty of other things to do in Burgunden if you happen to branch away from the Festival Grounds. You may find brochures and travel information on Burgunden and Neu Engollon at the Confederacy Park Box Office, Gendarme Security Station, and at the Pavilion Help Desk. Also, any questions can be directed to our friendly help staff wearing special orange vests. Enjoy yourselves, but please be safe and be respectful of others around you.

STAYING OR GETTING AROUND IN THE CITY

Some places to stay if you haven't booked a room yet in Burgunden:

* Presarius Plaza Hotel H$$$$
* The Menton H$$$$
* Destination Chateau Burgunden H$$$$
* Hotel 26 (Golden Eagle) H$$$$
* Alpha Lofts H$$$
* Collections Hotel H$$$
* Paradise Hotel H$$$
* Hayden Hotel H$$$
* Rock House & Studios H$$$
* Summervale Gardens B&B H$$
* Tell's Inn H$$
* Alpenhorn Tavern H$$
* Motel Mertach H$
* BB Hostel H$

We recommend against trying to find parking for rental cars near the Festival grounds. Besides the fact that parking will be almost non existent and pay parking lots fill up fast, laws on drunk driving are also very strict, should you be inbibing the fine beverages offered. We want everyone to stay safe, ultimately. There will be bus and metro train service throughout the night for nominal fees. There will be plenty of taxis, some of them provided by the St. James Cab Service. They will always be lined up outside the gates to take you back to your hotels. Also, watch for the green mini-van shuttles, as they have certain hours, but are free shuttles to many of the hotels in the premier hospitality district of Burgunden.

THE GROUNDS

Confederacy Park is almost as old as Burgunden itself. The grounds are laid out simply with the main stage and the Pavilion in the middle and the participants' tents, aid station, security station and port-a-john stations around the walls of the park enclosure. Adjoining the main Festival grounds are the rugby pitches and auxiliary exhibition grounds. Pavilion admittance will only be for VIP guests (3rd/top floor) and special 2nd Floor ticket holders or Invited guests. Again, please utilize our friendly staff in the orange vests for directional questions.

THE BEVERAGE MAKERS

The brewers and distillers are some of the best from around the globe and have brought their craft to show off here in the backyard of Neu Engollon's premier brewing City. They have submitted a selection of their best offerings for the judging. They will also be serving most of these selections as well as many other surprise selections at their tents located throughout the grounds. See the map for tent location. Beverages will be served in various sizes, such as 3oz samplers, 8 oz or 10 oz glasses, 16 oz pints and some may even offer take home growlers, single bottles, 4-6 bottle packs, or cases. Many will also be serving examples of local cuisine and merchandise from their brewery/distillery, as well as some other alcoholic offerings. Check their tents, as pricing and menus should be posted.

THE JUDGING

The main purpose of the Beer Festival is to have a fun, friendly competition for many of the top beers and liquors from around the world. There are several Categories in which beers will be judged, with a couple categories being judged each day. Some of the categories of fiercest competition are for Pale Ales, IPAs, Pilsners, Fruits, Stouts and Amber/Red Ales.

There are 8 breweries and distilleries competing in the AVBF this year. The judges are a panel of beverage experts gathered from around the world's most prestigious brewcraft and distillery regions.
Judging will be done through the Xkoronate 3.3 scorinator program, adapting an artistic gymnastic platform to beer categories. Bonus skill points have been given for descriptiveness, story and proper categorization, as well as booth menu and some other categories. Also, there will be RP Bonus.

ATTENDANCE

We are expecting thousands upon tens of thousands of attendees, many of them local to the Burgunden area, but many more from across Neu Engollon and Teremara. We will also have quite an outer-regional international presence including some celebrities, royalty and dignitaries from across the globe. Tickets will be sold in group packages, Full Festival 3 Day Passes and 1 Day passes. Sales of tickets are available up through the last day of the Festival until they last and capacity is reached. Attendees are allowed to re-enter the grounds upon leaving, if their ticket is for that day, but they are subject to search again upon re-entry. A wristband will be issued for re-entry. The Pavilion has three levels. The ground level seating and second level boxes are available for sale through to the last day of the Festival, or subject to availability. Third level boxes are reserved for advance sold VIP spots and Government and top corporate personnel only. Television monitors throughout the levels show feeds from the rugby pitches and close ups of the main music and DJ stages. There is a full stocked bar on the ground level, as well as table seating and a play area for kids. Pavilion passes are required to even enter the structure. No outside food or drink is allowed in to the Festival except for sealed water bottles.

PERFORMERS

There is a wide variety of musical performers and other entertainers that will be engaging and rocking the crowd. Some are from Neu Engollon and some are from the International Community. They are listed below in no particular order of importance.

On The Royal Imperial Main Stage:

The Royalists A pop band from the Blueberry Islands that has made some waves on the charts and found some airplay on Neu Engollian radio stations. A decent sized, younger crowd is expected for their performance.
This is their second AVBF appearance, and they won a following in this region to match that in their own.

Freestyle & The MC Crew A hip hop group from Vangaziland. They have come well touted with plenty of street cred and a solid catalog of hits.

Scarlett Johansson A well loved pop singer from Blueberry Islands with a big following there. We are glad to be able to welcome her to the AVBF for her first big International festival gig.

The Chrysalides A pop rock band from Gylias with some notoriety outside their home nation and region. They are sure to make an impression here in their first appearance in the Confederacy.

Alpen Volken Circle A folk group that plays traditional favorites and several styles from around Neu Engollon. They originate from Ludenthal, NE. They have returned to play the AVBF every year.

Frigid Mares A favorite act that call Panoli, Neu Engollon home, they play a rich tapestry of rock and roll that takes influences from some of the old 60's garage rock and melds indie, new wave and electro clash influences to that foundation. They have played every AVBF and hope to keep on that trend. Along with the Servonaris, they are part of the southern coastal Neu Engollian music scene that has really come up over the last few years.

The Podunkers Neu Engollon's Podunkers play a fusion of punk rock, Celtic rock, reggae and ska with some other styles blended in. They are one of the most popular musical acts in Neu Engollon and have been active as a group for almost 30 years. They call this big brewing city home, and many of their songs are about life in the large metropolis, social strife and the economic disparity that is often an intense topic these days.

The Servonaris This band hails from San Remo, and plays a blistering set of garage and surf rock. They built up quite a following in the southern cantons of Neu Engollon, subsequently taking the center and north of the country by storm, as well as many other parts of Teremara. This is their third Festival appearance.

On The Meinhardt DJ Stage:

DJ Goat Smasha Plays a mix of Goth dance, electronic, and Industrial re-mixes with a backdrop of some eerie videos and lights. Burgunden's own, you can often find him behind the boards at the Black Box club.

DJ Taunt Plays soul, reggae, ska and dub music, sometimes contributing his own sampled vocals and guitar stylings. From the capital, Telleursville, Geneva, NE.

Jay Gwar Likes to spin all kinds of rock and roll, but especially glam and any rock that has a boogie dance groove to it. From Albertville, Rhone, NE.

Dragon Drop This eclectic and exciting woman spins every kind of music under the sun and surprises at every turn with the odd and interesting mixes she comes up with, but no matter their randomness, her mixes always seem to move the crowd to dance. She hails from Schwartzgarten, Grisbenden, NE.

IN CONCLUSION

Image

It is my pleasure to once again open the Alpen View Brew Festival, which is without doubt the largest scale event my Ministry organizes for the City. Most certainly it is the largest event in the Confederacy and possibly one of the biggest in the region, and it keeps growing every year.

We hope that you are able to taste our local cuisine and beverages, that of the region, and many from crafters and vendors from around the multiverse that have come to show off the best their people have to offer and compete for top prizes in the beverage judging or just to please the taste buds of you fine festival attendees.

The Rugby Sevens tournament that is part of the festival has top sporting nations from around the world who have sent their best to compete on the pitch for the Alfredo Maracalo Cup, named for the man who first brought rugby to the Confederacy over 80 years ago. I hope that you are able to catch some of the matches.

Rest assured that every domestic law enforcement, security and intelligence agency are diligent in ensuring that you only have to worry about getting home or to your hotel after a long day of indulgence in smells, tastes, sights and sounds. We have staff waiting to assist you in that, as well.

Welcome world leaders, brewers, distillers, sponsors, exhibitors, dignitaries, entertainers, food purveyors, rugby players, fans, and attendees! Enjoy yourselves!
Neu Engollon is happy to have you here in our large, bustling city of Burgunden, in our proud Confederacy, in the grand region that we call home, Teremara.

Sincerely,
Rosette Kozic
Minister of Tourism and Culture, The Confederacy of Neu Engollon

A Suburb North of Burgunden
Two Days Before The AVBF

David and Erika Toft stopped just short of the door way, peering around the corner at their father, Jan Toft, as he sat on the corner of his bed. He held out a hand towards the window, then brought it closer to his eyes for an inspection. He wiggled his fingers then lowered the hand, sighing.

Erica looked at her brother then pulled him back further into the hallway.
“I’ve had about all I can handle today from Dad. I’m running dry, bro. I think he’d like to see you.”

“Okay...I...I’ll do my best.”

“Keep in mind that he might not recognize you at first. He goes in and out.”

“I know. I know. I’ve visited enough, Sis. You’re not the only one who’s…”

“Yeah, yeah, but you’ve not seen it first hand like it’s been the last few days. He’s gotten bad, Dave. This isn’t just forgetting stuff. He lapses back in time. It’s getting worse by the day. Mom’s scared that he’s going to get out again.”

“It’s fine. Just go back and talk to Mom...I’ll be along.”

“Remember. Journey.”

“Seriously? I’m not the one with the mental deterioration here, sis.”
He waved her off.
They were close, but there were times that she annoyed the shit out of him. He didn’t need to be told how to talk to his own father.
He walked into the bedroom and his father’s face lit up. This was the man who had built up Burgunden Breueries and BDI into international powerhouse companies, but right now, that was not evident as he had the cherubic look of a young boy.
Jan patted the end of the bed next to him, and David took the seat.
“Hello, Dad. How are you doing?”

“Huh? Yeah, I don’t know how much time we’ll have before Mom comes home. Did you get the motor, Franz?”

“Eh...Mom’s home, Dad. She’s in the kitchen. Did you wanna…”

“Look, Franz, since you’re here...I want you to know I didn’t tell Otto and those guys about your doll collection. You can count on me.”
Franz. Uncle Franz was Jan’s brother. They had an older sister, and a younger brother that had died in childhood, but it was Franz and Jan that had been the closest in age and inseparable from their earlier years through to their later business entrepreneur days. His father was back at some point of time in his childhood. David was now Uncle Franz. Did he play along? Did he keep trying to correct his father?
“Eh, yeah, thanks for that...Jan.”
Franz had collected action figures actually, but it had back before that was really the thing to do. Back when they were first coming out on the market. David recalled that Uncle Franz had talked about being picked on about it, and losing some of his prize figures to bullies.

“You bet, brother. We gotta look out for each other, ya know?”

“I know. I know. So, Dad...Jan...What do ya think about going somewhere that people will be able to watch, er...hang out with you all day. Lots of new friends for y...us. Whaddaya say?”

“That sounds great, Franz! Where is this place?”

“Oh, not far...like North of Burgunden.”

“We’re in North Burgunden...eh...aren’t we?”

“Further North. Are you up for visiting it tomorrow?”

“Am I in trouble? Is this like a boarding school?”

“No trouble...sort of like school...I dunno. It’s a pretty cool place, Jan. I’ll be there with you. We’ll meet some cool people. Will ya go with me?”

“I guess. Is that where the motor is?”

“Sure. I think that’s where I left it.”

“Let’s go see it now!”

“Ha! Tomorrow. It’s a big journey and lots of people to meet. You need to get some rest now.”

“I am rather sleepy.”

“Sure, I know. I’ll see you tomorrow, Papop...Jan.”

“Tomorrow. I could use a nap now.”

“Sure. Let’s get you tucked in here. We’ll just pull these slippers off and...There ya go. All set. I will see you tomorrow?”

“You bet, Franz!”

David got up from the bed from tucking his father in and walked out to the hallway, giving one last peek back at his father, a man who had been one of the top business leaders in the Confederacy and maybe even the world for decades. One would not guess as much from looking at his small, frail curled up figure now. Erika and his mother both stood waiting. They walked towards the living room so as not to disturb Jan.

Erika broke in first,
“Sorry...I...I couldn’t walk away and give you that moment to yourself. I just feel like if I leave…”

“I get it. It’s fine. So the doctor said what now? What stage of dementia?”

His mother shook her head and tears came to her’s and Erika’s eyes. David grabbed his mother and she sobbed into his shoulder.
“It’s not just dementia…*sob*...”

He looked at Erika, who stood more stoically. He himself was fighting back the sorrow of seeing his father like this.
“Alzheimer’s. We should know in a couple days from the tests...But...They’re pretty sure.”

“Well, if it’s early on though, he could have ye…”

“I...I think they didn’t diagnose it right before. I think this has been a while.”

Suddenly, David felt a rage build up inside him. He shook a bit. His mother gasped and pushed back to look into his face.
“David!”

“You mean...?! You mean they could have been giving him Alzheimer’s meds this whole time to keep it under control?! This stuff is fatal. Right? I don’t...Isn’t it?”

His mother went back to sobbing, hugging herself. Her head hung down.

It was Erika’s turn to be angry.
“Nice, Dave. Real nice. What the hell?!”

David looked around, then out the front window at the rolling hills of their front yard as he tried to get his emotions and thoughts under control. It was a large tract of land for being so close in to Burgunden. The luxury of being one of the wealthiest families in the Confederacy. All the luxury in the world didn’t mean shit if fancy, high salary, in demand doctors couldn’t make a proper diagnosis.
“Sorry. I’m sorry. This is all just so sudden. Now to hear of this. I will need to speak to this doctor, even though it won’t reverse anything. He needs to know how badly he screwed up. Why couldn’t you tell me earlier?”

They all seemed to make the unspoken agreement that they could sit down now. It was like lead, as they landed heavy in their chosen seats with more than their body weight to push them down. Erika softened her tone,
“I’m sorry, too. We should have told you, but you’ve been so busy with the planning of the Fest. I didn’t feel there was a good time to tell you without shoving a stick into your spokes, so to speak. I don’t think you can lay the blame at just one doctor, Dave. We’ve taken him around to so many. I don’t know that he’s had the same doctor for more than a couple months at a time.”

“Sure...I guess that makes sense. I’m just feeling so helpless with this. It definitely would have derailed my mind from getting things together, true. As it is, it will be hard to focus now. The launch is the day after tomorrow. Dignitaries and participants are flying in now as we speak.”

“You should be there, I’m sure they’ll want to get your ear before booth set up.”

“I can break away for a few hours tomorrow...for this. Family first, they’ll understand. I want to see this place. I want...I want to make sure he’s comfortable. I need to be there. I need to go now, so that I can get some stuff out of the way.” He wouldn’t sleep much in the next couple nights. They all stood up.
“Mom...Erika...You need to call me if anything changes.”

“Of course, David.”

David walked out to make more of the final arrangements for the Festival. What should be an exciting time had become more of an anxious time of uncertainty for him. His car waited at the end of the walk in the circular drive. Normally, he’d drive himself as he felt pretentious when he made use of a company driver, but now, with so much going on, he didn’t have time to focus on driving as he would be barraged with endless calls, texts and requests. He nodded and they headed out back for the freeway to downtown.

"Anna, are you sure this was a good idea?"

The question, delivered in a teasing tone and accompanied by a soft shoulder bump, came from Angela Vencele of the Chyrsalides, and was addressed to Anna Várkonyi, the band's steadfast manager of 22 years. The four of the Chrysalides plus the one of the Anna were standing on the deck of their passenger ship, watching as it pulled into port in the Confederacy. The ocean was largely still, but there was some of the usual seaside atmosphere the women had been used to in Gylias - a few seagulls flying overhead and making seagull noises, that sort of thing. The soft breeze was missed, though. All of them wore loose-fitting T-shirts, some with fun quotes, others sleeveless.

"Course I am, Angela!", Anna replied cheerfully. "Have I ever steered you wrong?"

Angela started to reply, "Well, there was that one time you..." but found herself having Anna jokingly cover her mouth and reply, "Exactly my point - nevah!" She didn't mind it too much, it was quite a classic friendly joke.

"It would've been better if we could've just flown right in," Cæse said, sighing with disappointment and adjusting her glasses. "Now we're looking at, what, a train ride through half of..." She waved her hand, trying to push the word out of her mouth. Eventually, she settled for, "... this place."

"Neu Engollon," Anna replied, looking a Cæse sympathetically. "I know, Cæse, I'd have wanted that too, but we couldn't just hop on a Gyliair flight. Traveling across regions is a bit trickier than that."

Cæse made a meek noise of protest and gazed down from the deck. The ship had basically finished pulling into the port of Nice; all that was left was to drop anchor and give the signal that it was time to disembark. The port area was surrounded by a neighbourhood dominated by small, four- or five-story housing blocks, with forested mountains rising gently in the distance. It was a rather familliar landscape for the band members. "You know, this feels a bit like home," Franciska commented, referring to Lænas.

"Only a bit, though...", Angela quipped. "It looks a bit uptight."

When the ship had docked, the Chrysalides and their manager had retrieved their luggage from their cabins and stepped foot on Confederacy soil. (Or more accurately, the wooden walkover part of the port. Still counted.) The instruments were to be provided by the Festival, so they travelled light: only their passports, some clothes, tablets, and reading material - enough to fit in a few light rucksacks carried on their backs. They followed the path to the Gare de Nice-Ville on Anna's map, and at a leisurely stroll, chatting and having fun together.

"Tell you what," Dáuma remarked at one point, "at least we get a nice and long train ride."

"Several, actually!", Anna replied chirpily, as she pointed the others' attention to the map. "First we have to get to Albertville..."

On one side of the Lion Brewing Company booth, a large display was posted.

Lion Brewing Company

Beverages

1 FREE 3 oz. sample per person, larger sizes for purchase (all prices NSD): 1/2 Pints (8 oz) $3, 12 oz. $4.50, Pints (16 oz) $6, 32 oz. Growler $10 + $3 deposit, 64 oz. Growler $16 + $3 deposit, Growler Refill $6/9

IPAs/ESBs: Corner Pub ESB, 5% - Lion goes back to Nova Anglicana's English roots with this Extra Strong Bitter that delicately balances hops and malts; served a little warmer than normal for that real English pub experience

Grizzled IPA, 7.0% - Orange in color, this crisp beer has a citrusy taste up front, but that gradually fades to allow pine and floral aromas to come to the fore.

Pale Ales: Hunter's Pale Ale, 5.9% - Dark gold and full-bodied, with a hoppy nose and assertive-but-balanced flavors of pale malts and citrusy floral hops from start to finish.

Alpha Male Strong Golden Ale, 8.5% - combines pilsner malts and spicy hops to produce a golden-colored, drinkable ale with a complex mouthfeel.

Ambers/Reds/Ryes: Autumn Amber Ale, 4.6% - Crisp and malty, with subdued hops flavor, perfect for an autumn afternoon

Belgians/Farm Ales/Saisons: Mayflower Saison, 6.5% - As you drink, you should detect just a hint of mayflower aroma, Erickson and Co. are proud of that little feat of beer engineering, tastes of spice and slightly bitter and earthy

Fruit/Shandys/Lambics: High Ridge Framboise Lambic, 4.1% - A fruity lambic beer made with raspberries picked directly from Nova Scotia, High Ridge balances the sweetness of a lambic with the tartness of raspberries for an excellent drinking experience

Sunrise Grapefruit Beer, 5.2% - Deliciously pink and tart but not too tart, this fruit beer is refreshing enough to drink anytime

Pilsners/lights/kolsch: Löwe Kolsch, 4.5% - Lion's take on this interesting style from Köln, Löwe is extra gold, extra cold, and perfect for a warm summer's day. Slightly fruity and slightly dry.

Stouts: Lion Stout, 8.8% - The dark caramel, large dense headed brew, with its 8.8% alcoholic content, is unique due to its sweet notes of chocolate and coffee interspersed into a foundation of dark roasted barley

Porters/Scotchs/Browns: High Tide Scotch Ale, 8.0% - named for the tides in Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy, High Tide packs a wallop at 8% ABV. Sweet enough, but not as much as the stout or the fruit beers. Caramel and malt are the stars here.

Wheat/Weisse: Harvest White Ale, 5.1% - Made from local wheat and spices, Lion's interpretation of a Belgian witbier is more complex than Lion Lager, but just as drinkable, with fruit undertones.

Lagers: Lion Lager, 4.8% - Golden roasted malt in colour with a hint of fruit and caramel flavouring, it is very slightly sweet with less hop notes, good for thirsty workers at the end of a long day, the flagship beer of the brewery

Windfall Cyser, 12.5% - A new offering from Lion, Windfall combines delicious Nova Anglican apples with Newfoundland honey for a twist on a traditional hard cider. Sweet but spicy, with floral notes, honey, and apple throughout, it works very well on its own or paired with hearty, savory fare to balance the sweetness.

Cyser Prices: 6 oz $6, 12 oz bottles $11

Good Old Hooch, 25% - Good Old Hooch is Liqueur de la Mures de la Marais in French, or chicoutai in First Nations parlance, a sweet liqueur made from cloudberries, a type of wild raspberry.

Confederacy Park
Burgunden, ZU, NE

Assistant organizers that worked for both Terembev and Burgunden Breueries had been able to cover for Erika and David Toft while they tended to family matters. The brother and sister duo had been able to make it back yesterday from settling their father in to the new special intensive nursing facility in order to handle all the Fest matters that needed attending.

Today, a lot of last minute details were put in to place as the vendors and brewers prepared their tents for the big open. They had all spent the last evening getting the last minute touches in place, other than food that may need to be cooked that morning. Those that needed more kitchen facilities had used ones in the ground floor of the Pavilion that the organizers had made available.
The kegs were hooked up to the cooling systems provided, and those that required the mobile fridges had them, rolled to where they needed to be and plugged in with ample amounts of extension cords if need be. (The amount of power needed, between the music stage and exhibitor and brewer/vendor booths, was astounding, but The City of Burgunden managed to be able to provide every year.)

There was no concern that anyone would bother with the booths overnight as security was tight for the fenced in part of the park grounds, as well as further out roaming patrols. Burgunden PD was on hand, as well as hired on private security, along with a few Pine Park (The domestic internal criminal/intelligence agency) agents in plain clothes that lurked around the area looking for trouble. A quick response force of combined police and military was on hand nearby to respond at a moment's notice, they were equipped for almost any emergency and had hazmat/NBC gear on hand just in case.
Unbeknownst to many but the top organizers and various building owners and managers, NEDM-DGC snipers had command of all the surrounding high rise and skyscraper roof tops for contingency purposes. Nothing was left to chance as far as security went in the largest annual gathering in the Confederacy of Neu Engollon.

The one distinct possibility of anyone causing a fracas was if Hoppy Jensen, the Master Brewer of Burgunden Breueries and also master prankster, were to get near the Festival before gate time. One of David's assistants had taken care of the issue by providing Hoppy with mounds of small denomination Helveti notes and unleashing him on his favorite strip club. The owner and bouncers had been well compensated with strict orders to keep Hoppy in the club, barring the doors if they had to.

David and Erika stood back and gave the signal to open the gates and let in the VIPs through the north gate 20 minutes ahead of the Main gate opening. As security ushered them as quickly as possible to the Pavilion, they prepared to let in the regular festival attendees. The minutes ticked down, then seconds...
TG me with questions if you got some, especially about GE&T or PMCs.

The Olweans had the Wolfman's Bar & Grill tent set up well in advance of the countdown. For the second year in a row, Princess Alizee Duvall -- one of the Emperor's youngest daughters -- was among the cook/wait staff. The gorgeous blond 19 year old was drawing plenty of interested looks from men -- and the occasional woman -- staffing the other tents or milling around working maintenance or security. Several times she paused in whatever she was doing and gave a smile or wink, obviously willing to encourage this kind of attention. She wondered which of these people would be going back to her hotel room with her tonight. She supposed if she had no takers she could always take a fellow waitress back with her, but she had already been with all of them.

A cloud of steam obscured her from view momentarily... the Cajun stir fry she was making had started to sizzle. It was one of many new additions to the menu, all aimed at showcasing the extreme diversity of the Olwean palate. The menu read as follows:

Pizza by the slice ($2):

Olwean style (shrimp, garlic, tomatoes, no crust)
Pepperoni
Cheese
Sausage
Hawaiian (pineapples and ham)
Just Not Kosher (pepperoni, sausage, ham, salami and bacon)
Margherita (tomatoes, basil and garlic)
Chicken Florentine (chicken, spinach, Alfredo sauce)
Greek (olives, eggplant, feta, tomatoes, pepperoncini, gyro meat)

Traditional Tavern favorites

Fish and chips: beer battered cod and French fries (choice of Olwean seasoned or plain, served with tartar and cocktail sauces, $4)
Fried cheese (mozzarella sticks breaded and fried, served with marinara sauce for dipping, $3)
Buffalo wings (chicken wings tossed in choice of mild, medium, hot or Olwean sauce, $3)
Pegasus wings (sauceless chicken wings seasoned with a zesty blend of Greek herbs and spices, $3)
Cheese fries (French fries smothered with bacon and cheese, $3)
Nachos (plain tortilla chips served with choice of queso or salsa for dipping, $3)
Cheesy nachos (queso-smothered nachos served with salsa for dipping, $3.50)
Loaded nachos (cheesy nachos with olives, jalapeños, seasoned ground beef and pico de gallo, $4)
Sliders (mini cheeseburgers with onions, ketchup and pickles, $3)

Immigrant inspired fare
These foods did not originate in Olwe, but have become extremely popular here.

Gyro (pita-wrapped lamb/beef blend with lettuce, tomatoes and Yiatzhki sauce, $4)
Calamari (fried squid with choice of marinara or cocktail sauce for dipping, $3)
Cajun stir fry (chicken, Andouille sausage, onions, peppers and Spanish rice, sprinkled with Cajun seasoning, $4)
Philly cheese steak (shredded beef, mushrooms, onions and peppers, $4)
Olwean cheese steak (shredded beef, tomatoes, garlic and mushrooms, $4)
Lumpia (meat filled spring rolls, $3)
Lembas (Elven waybread, $4)

Little bites

French fries (plain or Olwean seasoned, $1)
German potato salad (served hot or cold, $1)
Fried mushrooms (hand breaded, $1)

Beverages

Reiff beers (free in sample size, $1 a pint, $2 a bottle; $4 for first growler, refills free after that)
Iced tea (no alcohol content, $1)
Coffee (black $1, cappuccino and espresso $2, latte $3, Irish $4)
Cocktails (shots $1, margaritas/daiquiris/martinis $2, Long Island iced tea $3)

Desserts

Gelato (Italian ice cream, available in strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, cherry, grape, chocolate, vanilla, espresso, peanut butter and straciatella flavors, $1)
Cupcakes (chocolate, vanilla, or marble with butter cream icing, $1 each)
Cookies (chocolate chip, sugar, oatmeal raisin, white chocolate macadamia nut, peanut butter {contains no actual peanuts}, or double chocolate, $1 each)

Off to the side of the menu, a brunette woman nearly as attractive as Alizee -- also in a waitress uniform -- stood scanning the crowd. Aurora Pasadore was her name, and she had also been here last year. She was determined, if Hoppy Jenkins showed up for a repeat performance this year, to use every bit of her military training to subdue him with whatever force became necessary. He had escaped justice last year... but now she was ready for him.

The train pulled out of the station and Anna led the way for the Chrysalides, stepping out onto the platform and cheerfully announcing, "Well, here we are! Burgunden Hauptbahnhof!" The station was covered by a metal roof with glass curves, allowing the sunlight to stream in; it was also remarkably long, the platform, and on the way out the group passed by at least two subways, likely leading to a metro system. (What else was a subway in a railway station gonna do? Besides allow for a way to easily get between the platforms. It was easy to miss when there were trains blocking one's view.)

"Whoa, this place is long," Dáuma remarked, looking around her and in front. "It might even be longer than Mishawaka North!" (That was likely: Mishawaka had actually four prominent train stations - North, East, South, West - handling its rail traffic; they all mostly shared the distinction as the capital's hub of rail transport.) She and Cæse walked holding hands together, and making small talk now and then when Dáuma was not busy scanning her surroundings.

In passing, Angela made a disgusted face at a widescreen monitor separating two benches, showing an ad for possibly some sort of energy drink, with silver, blue, and red packaging. Who the fuck actually thinks this is a good idea?, she thought. L'effronterie... The fact that the monitor looked quite snazzy technologically and could change between the ads it displayed - mostly by wiping - only compounded her revulsion.

Noticing this, Franciska moved closer to Angela and remarked, "Ah, you're not feeling good, Angie?"

"Nah, Fran, it's just the commercialism getting to me," Angela replied with a laugh. "They taught me well in school."

Franciska shared Angela's laugh, and then reached out with her hand to stroke Angela's hair. "Don't worry Angie," she said in a playful cooing voice, "You're only gonna have your senses assaulted for a couple of days."

Angela looked at Franciska with a teasingly deadpan expression. "Fran, that's not helping," she joked.

The leisurely pace at which they walked probably did not aid with the sensation that the platforms on the station stretched forever. Once they finally reached the wide open Haupthalle, they took a moment to lean by one of the metal railings on the end of the platforms, to take it all in. Cæse held her hand in the air and was seemingly trying various combinations of it in front of her eyes that might help her estimate what the size of the Haupthalle was. Angela still couldn't believe what waste of public space the station was committing by letting advertising go up on walls; she would've highly preferred some artwork or more train displays, or public information posters. The imposing size of the building somehow made the garishness more garish, when something transcendent or heartening would have been more appropriate.

And this is why you don't do interior décor, she joked with herself.

Cæse looked at Anna, and gestured towards her map. "So, where next, Anna?"

Anna started to say, "We're going to the BB Hostel", as she fumbled slightly on her map and then started orienting herself around, making thinky filler noises such as "Yes... um... lemme see... we should be..."

"...here!", she announced after finding the Hauptbahnhof. "Now we're on the Bahnhofplatz... We'll have to cross the river..."

She began showing the band the map and explaining how they would get to their hostel, and later Confederacy Park.

Gunnhilde Grimsdottir stood on the port facilities of Alpen View, impatiently tapping her feet as the climate controlled shipping container was lowered onto the bed of a semi trailer, muttering curses and oaths in a language that nobody in Alpen View had ever heard before. The fact that she was visibly upset and taller than a good many men in Alpen View was probably what kept the customs agents several feet back casting a wary eye in her direction.

Once the shipping container was secured and a direct power connection was re-established to the container's climate control unit, Gunnhilde turned to the two customs agents and held out her hand, "I will sign".

The junior of the two held out the clipboard and she signed quickly, then handed it back. The looks of confusion on the faces of the inspection agents led her to ask, "Is there a problem?"

"No ma'am, it's just that we can't read what you wrote," answered the senior of the two.

The brewmaster looked at them like they were idiots, "Of course not, you don't speak or read my language. If there is nothing else, I have a beer festival to be at."

With that, she turned and began shouting at her employees in a language that would've sounded vaguely like Old Norse to a particularly specialized linguist.

***

After arriving at the fair grounds and settling the shipping container behind the designated tent area, an affair that had the ever-perfectionist Gunnhilde in an even fouler temper, the crew began the process of setting up the necessary equipment to serve beer and food. Of particular note was the extensive use of solar panels. Karita as a country wasn't one that gave much of a damn about environmental issues, practicality was the rule of the day. It was most practical to use solar panels and high density battery packs to power mobile refrigeration, so that was what was used.

The finishing touches were a series of signs detailing the various beers by season and a chosen smørrebrød pair:

OPENING DAY
Minutes from Open Gate Time

David was out checking on their guests setting up tents. Erika was getting ready to follow and wrap up her tasks in the park office when she was cornered by Michel Roessler, the Musical and stage director for the Festival. Michel had worked all five years in his position and was the man in charge of set up, artist liaison, the large crew and anything else that had to with the music and stages at the Fest.
"Michel, I was just heading out to the grounds..."

"I am worried. I haven't heard from the Chrysalides for a while."

"The Chroma..?"

"Chrysalides. The band from Gylias. They didn't use the airline tickets we sent them. They decided to sail and travel by rail."

"Oh, well, that's quaint. That's their prerogative I suppose. Definitely, the scenic route, but to be fair...flying would involve a lot of connections between Tyran and Teremara. I don't blame them for wanting to miss out on that."

"Ms. Toft, they might not get here in time. They might miss their time slot."

Erika sighed.
"From what I recall, we usually give the foreign acts at least a couple sets throughout the weekend. Plus, I'm sure someone would be willing to switch slots with them. Maybe throw in those...Royalties, is that their name...in the slot?"

"The Royalists. From Blueberry Islands. I already have the schedule done. It's all printed up, everyone is set."

"It's entertainment, these things happen. I'm sure one of the domestic groups will switch out. The point is, you're really getting a little...preoccupied with this matter, Michel."

"I just have a bad feeling about this. I don't think it's a small matter. We're talking about diminutive Gylian women traveling through some...challenging areas."

"Oh, you mean Quiront country. I wouldn't worry about that. He hasn't exactly declared a complete Thunderdome just yet."
Paul Quiront was the new controversial mayor of Albertville. He was a xenophobic, racist, sexist, ignorant former professional tennis player that had somehow won an election via a super spin team and group of crooked advisers and lobbyists.
"The law of the land still comes through Telleursville, Michel. Also, I think you might be underestimating our Gylian friends."

David walked back in to the office at that moment. He'd heard the last snippet of conversation.
"You have a lot of things to worry about as we're minutes away from Gates open, Michel. This is not one of those issues you should be worrying about." David pointed towards the door and Michel scooted for it. David turned his attention to Erika.
"Is Uncle Hans here?"

"As far as I know, yeah. He's getting ready." Hans was actually Great Uncle Hans and the man was as ancient as one might expect, but he was still as sparky as ever. Hans blew the Alpen horn that officially kicked off the Fest. He was, suiting up in full laderhosen and Tyrolian hat as he did every year.

"Is Minister Kozic here?"

"Am I your secretary now, Dave?"

"Come on, I thought you were on top of this, Erika?!"

"David, I've been dealing with the same thing you have." (Their father's illness) "We do have assistants, ya know? They'll tell us if something's wrong. You're starting to sound like Michel there. If one thing we have to have learned over the last few weeks dealing with Papop and his situation, it's that you shouldn't sweat the small stuff so much, it'll work itself out."

"Kind of sounds like a lazy girl excuse to me, Sis."

"Shut the cozzfick up!"

David smiled.
"I'm kidding, Sis."

"Look at the time! We need to get out there."

Cat's Claw
East Burgunden
The Other Side of Town ("The other side of the tracks")

Meanwhile, deep in the heart of dingy East Burgunden, Hoppy Jensen was trying to figure out how to escape the Cat's Claw, the sleaziest strip club among many in this part of town. Every door was blocked by two hulking bouncers who were only letting in and out the regular crowd of patrons. Really, anyone that wasn't Hoppy.

He was a regular, but apparently he was excluded today from that list. Despite the amount of money he threw around here, he still was rating some shabby treatment right now. He'd tried twice now and gotten a bit roughed up in the process. Truth be told, he could fight his way out if he had to. He'd taken on bigger thugs than these and won, but he had also been a lot drunker than now. It was disappointing that it was already almost 10 o'clock in the morning and he was not nearly as drunk as he should be. He knew perfectly well what time it was and that the gates were about to open...without him present.

He needed to be there to light the fuses. For some reason, he hadn't been able to buy timed fuses. Something about terrorists or some such shit...

He kept trying to verbally cajole the staff into letting him out.
"This is kidnappin' yer know? I thought ya wer always jokin' bout how yers gotta fumigate out ma table...I been heres quite a while."

One of the managers heard him and closed within the safest distance that odor and physical reach would allow.
"It's no joke. We practically have to call in a hazmat team every time you're done visiting."

"I will get up on dat center table and take a giant dump right in der middle of it. Try fumigatin' dat shit, eh?"

The manager only looked at his watch uneasily, shrugged, then walked away. BB had really compensated them well to put up with this.

Hoppy made his way to the bathroom. There was always a trusty escape via the window. At least, that's how the movies worked.

Confederacy Park
Downtown Burgunden

It was time. She got the signal from her assistant that had just done a run through of all the tents. They were ready. Erika waved to the security at the West gates who began to unlock them to let the mass of ticket holders in. She and a few assistants trotted out to greet them. David was at the South gate about to do the same. She held up a bullhorn:

"Welcome! Welcome to the Alpen View Brew Festival! Please come in and enjoy everything we all have to offer! Welcome!"

"Aurora. Stop glowering, you're making me nervous," Alizee said with a typical teenage eye roll.

"This is when it happened last year," the security woman said. 'It' had been Hoppy Jenkins kicking the man who had stood right next to Aurora in the face, breaking his nose. For some reason, this had deeply offended Aurora.

"You don't think David and Erika Toft have the exact same concerns you do? I'm sure there are contingencies in place." Alizee finished putting the frosting on the last of the cupcakes while she waited for a reply.

"If you don't mind, I'll keep an eye out just in case," Aurora said.

The other waitress from Wolfman's, Melima, came out from behind the tent. Though her costume was just as revealing as the other two women's, it was markedly different in style. Fans of DC comics would recognize it as a Harley Quinn cosplay. "Joining the March Of The Madcaps, are we?" Alizee asked.

Melima grinned. "You know me," she said. "I'm never one to miss out on fun." And with that she sauntered out of the tent, wiggling her shapely rear invitingly.

Cat's Claw
East Burgunden

Hoppy Jensen had seemed to accept his fate as a virtual prisoner of his favorite strip club rather well. He'd warmed up to his predicament very well, in fact. Well, that was after a predictable escape attempt through the bathroom window had been thwarted, of course. The blood of Hoppy and two of the bouncers was smeared across every tile, stall wall and door and porcelain surface of the bathroom in question. The tooth fairy would find a treasure trove in one sink, if the clumps of hair and gore didn't repel them.
If one didn't know specifically of the nature of the fight that had occurred, they might be searching for the slaughtered victims that were sure to have shed that much blood.

The blood just blended in as another layer of grime on the putrid, shaggy, rag and leather scrap clad walking disaster that was the Head Master Brewer of what was probably the Multiverse's most commercially successful and well known brewery. Currently, as the powers that be of the Cat's Claw knew, Hoppy was in a side room getting a private dance from Melody. In reality, Melody and her bouncer/minder were tied up together while the hulking frame of Jensen was trying to squeeze through air ducts that were much too narrow for him.

Normally, the thought of spending the day in his favorite club with unlimited funds and drinks would be a dream fulfilled, but being present on opening day of the Alpen View Brew Festival to cause the maximum amount of mischief possible way superseded that bucket list item. Hoppy was doing his best to get a taste of both dreams in one day. The blood and grime helped to grease his passage through the ducts until he found a branch to the roof. After busting through the filters, fan and covers, he was free. Hoppy scrambled down a fire escape and into the morning, terrifying the dozens of city folk within view going about their business as the wolf-like man tore across the street looking for a ride.

Confederacy Park
AVBF

Uncle Hans had outdone himself this time, but it really seemed like the ancient man in Tyrolean gear might just collapse from the effort as he let go of the mouthpiece of the long Alpenhorn. Luckily, there was a staffer there to catch him, as well as one to catch the horn before it could tumble and crack.
As Hans was led away, waving and smiling to the crowd, David and Erika exchanged a quick relieved look.

Minister of Tourism and Culture Rosette Kozic stepped forward from the group of government personnel that included the Minister of Finance & Commerce, Dietfried Plemarche, and the Minister of Infrastructure, Daniel Cleux. They were gathered on the Main Stage, where a small podium with the Neu Engollon seal of the Confederacy affixed to it was centered. She stepped up to it and paused scanning the crowd, some of whom had already gotten their first drinks. She then launched into a speech, but didn't seem to be reading off any teleprompter or cue cards:

"Bon magen! This is my second AVBF, and it never seems to disappoint in bringing such a beautiful and vibrant energy to this large city that holds almost a third of the population of the Confederacy. So much goes into this event every year, and a lot of thanks must go to the organizers, as well as the sponsors both domestic and overseas that help to make this such a successful event every year. I will keep this short and sweet...Thank you to all for coming out to celebrate with us and to support brew culture both here in the Confederacy as well as across the multiverse. We're so happy to have you here and hope you can enjoy all that the Fest has to offer and then some. Be safe, be smart, be happy, be fulfilled and bien-welk to Burgunden, and to our humble Confederacy. Otteni-prep wer! Provici!"

She stepped away from the podium and there was some cheering and light clapping.
Almost immediately after, music was piped through the PA system all around the park of a silly, carnival type anthem. Soon, through the North gate, musicians began to play a raucous, dissonant mix of music from various brass and percussion instruments. They were partially clad in marching band outfits, but all had clown like additions to their outfits that made them slightly outlandish and off kilter from your normal serious marching band. The March of the Madcaps had kicked off.

They led in a larger group of clowns that were hugging, pecking the cheeks and shaking the hands of various random patrons, tucking bits of candy into their pockets. Other more acrobatic characters in all sorts of goofy outfits were tumbling and cartwheeling through the main thoroughfare of the grounds, some were riding tricked out bicycles, some were just shouting gibberish, some were squirting patrons with seltzer sprayers and others were getting a little more aggressive, but nothing that could be described as actually violent. Towards the end of this parade, staffers dressed in various costumes from movie and cartoon characters to more elaborate graphic novel heroes marched in, followed by what could only be described as a motley collection of street dwellers and the less fortunate who had tagged along. At the very end, blending into the bums and recognizable to a few, despite a face obscured by thick grime and a very out of control beard was Hoppy Jensen himself. He smiled wide at this victory, as he held up both hands high with middle fingers extended to all that would meet his gaze.

Audible to nearly no one he was mumbling and cursing through his grin.
"I'm ginna farkin' stick it ta all yer farkin' stuck up, turdsuckin', smarmy, flerpin' moochers! Yer'll see, ya finny fuckletrucks! Yer'll see it all burn!"

Aurora continued scanning the crowd with suspicious narrowed eyes. Then that gaze hardened even further into a hate-filled glare. "That's him," she said through gritted teeth.

"Good luck," Alizee said as the brunette departed in Hoppy Jenkins' direction, leaving her alone in the tent. She wasn't worried about a sudden rush... with her magical skills she could handle a large influx of customers on her own, and probably fucking wow them in the process.

Melima would be back after the March Of The Madcaps anyway. Alizee scanned the crowd to see if she could pick her out, but there were too many female marchers wearing revealing outfits. Oh well, at least she was having fun.

"Told you it would all work out!", said Anna with a beaming smile as she led her four friends to the entrance of Confederacy Park, some time after the gates had been unlocked. The sight would have been a familliar one to the Chrysalides, from festivals they had played at before; since they were showing up through the main entrance like any other ticket-holder, the delay was beneficial, as it allowed some of the crowd to clear by the time they were about to enter. Nevertheless, if one paid attention to the particular arrangement of people - perhaps from an observation tower of some sort - one would still discern traces of the old stream of attendants lining up to enter. (One might get the same result from analysing the ground, if one were a... ground... ologist...)

Franciska turned to Angela and quipped, "At least there'll be less ads in here, Angie." Something about her chirpy tone and serenely happy facial expression sold the line much better than if she hadn't done the just-slightly-too-innocent delivery. It made Angela laugh.

"Fran, we're at a festival," Angela said, reaching out to tousle her bandmate's hair. "You know that, right?"

"Oh, we are?", Franciska replied. Angela laughed again; something about the way Franciska played dumb sometimes really tickled her funny bone, and Franciska was well aware of that. She enjoyed seeing her friend happy.

It was now their turn; Anna went ahead and showed the security staff the tickets for herself and her comrades. They were quickly waved in to the grounds: short cut grass, neatly paved paths, big stages... and in the distance, the rest of the park - or what was left of it. As they went into the festival grounds, Anna remaked to the band, "It's curious, it turned out we have special passes."

"Oh?", Cæse replied. "I thought we had regular tickets."

"Yeah, I thought we did too, but..." Anna raised her shoulders and shrugged. "What ya gonna do? You're entertainers."

"Ohhhh, right.", Dáuma said, a well-timed reply that earned a chuckle from everyone. "So, how shall we entertain ourselves?"

Angela gestured towards the tents. "We could start by looking at what's on offer. I heard this is a beer and food festival."

"We are not sampling everything, though!", Cæse replied jokingly. "We'd have to have Rabnak Méiryadz's liver and Agathe Sanna's money."

The fivesome began walking towards the pavillions, with no particular preference for which they would approach first.

March of The Madcaps

As the parade started to trail off and most of the clowns and musicians headed out the South gate or towards the Pavilion, David and Erika followed along and smiled as some of the bystanders joined in or got excited enough to dance on their own. They didn't notice the entrance at the back of the March by Jensen, who blended in with the other shabbily dressed street denizens that tended to tag along to get a free ride in to the Park grounds.

DJ Taunt, meanwhile, was firing up some music through the DJ stage and the tents were fully mobbed with lines about 5 deep and as wide as the counters at this point. The smarter patrons were loading up on a little bit of food first before getting their morning drink on. The serious drinkers were saving their money for as many samples as they could down.

Rugby Exhibition Pitches
To The East of the Main Grounds

Over on the rugby pitches, teams from two dozen nations were in full swing taking their turns on the four pitches to contest for the Maracalo Cup. Rugby sevens was a blindingly, brutally fast sport. Matches were 15 minutes with a quick break in the middle mark, splitting two 7 minute halves. It was a scorer's paradise and it wasn't often that one saw scrums and mauls like you would in a normal rugby match. It was just quickly executed running plays and passing out to the wings to break through the holes. Less players meant less hands and shoulders to tackle, which meant more chances to get distance. A good few patrons had rushed to get their beers so they could get out to the pitches in time to see the opening matches. There were some servers that worked the lines and bleachers, but they didn't carry all the varieties you could get from every tent, and they didn't work with fresh draughts, only cans and bottles.

As Hoppy strolled in and started to lose pace with the March he looked around to survey the land. He needed to get to where the fuses were. The timing wouldn't be as perfect, but it would still be quite a good laugh when...
A very determined brunette woman was working her way through the crowd with burning eyes focused on him. He smiled and rubbed his hands across his chest.
"Easy lass! Thar's plenty o' ol' Hoppy ta go 'round. You'll jus' have ta wait yer turn, hunchiga!...er...easy now..."
As he realized Aurora wasn't slowing down and it wasn't lust in her contorting face, he was truly alarmed. Hoppy broke West, to cut a path between the Main stage and the Pavilion at a very quick trot, but not quite run.

Royal Imperial Main Stage

Stage Director Michel Roessler clapped his hands in a very flamboyant, exuberant manner as he read the most recent text message on his phone. The Chrysalides had made it after all, with hours to spare.
"Oh happy day! I can't wait to meet the girls and get them settled and familiar with the gear they're borrowing. You'll have to excuse me, Oskar...And no, for the last time, we can't use that gauge of pyrotechnics, it will start a fire. You can break it to their manager."

Michel headed from the stage area to search for the Gylian ladies. They had checked in just a few minutes ago, according to the scan at the gate, and it shouldn't be too hard to find a bunch of diminutive Gylians, but in fact, it was. They blended into a wall of Neu Engollians and foreigners quite nicely. It was the high point of the day as the opening ceremonies were over and the first day was kicking off.
Several festival goers knew that some of the more limited, rare batches of beer would run out within the first few hours of the first day, and they were determined to get their tastes in now. It made for a bit of a controlled chaotic crowd.

The Chrysalides and their manager made their way between the main stage and the Terembev Pavillion, then took a winding, semicircular path around the Meinhardt DJ Stage, ending up at the batch of four tents on the east side of the festival grounds. Without their distinctive outfits, in simple summery clothes, it was hard to distinguish them from the other attendants, unless one was particularly familiarised with the details of their faces and hairstyles. It was a fact that had served them - not to mention many other Gylian bands that had distinctive appearances - quite well: they could play on stage, chat with fans, and then change into less distinctive clothes and often pass through unrecognised, enjoy a beverage or snack alone, get back home without being mobbed.

To be fair, that part was quite rare as well, for a few reasons: the lack of a celebrity scandal press in Gylias compared to other nations, the well-behaved precedent established by The Sunday Girls and The Watts in attending to their fans, the fans themselves being quite subdued overall. Even the Chrysalides had some luck that they had never aroused the sheer level of frenzy of Sundaymania - no one really had. (The Chrysalides had had the good luck of meeting their heroes before; hearing stories from them convinced them that the main, yet understandable, flaw of many documentaries and histories of The Sunday Girls was their inability to properly put across just how intense Sundaymania was. Anyone less well-adjusted or grounded than Haruka, Tsukasa, Sæna and Meja would have been dead meat.)

A random person lightly bumped into Cæse's right shoulder as they passed towards the DJ stage, making Cæse slightly lose her balance. As she started saying, "Hey...", she turned around and noticed the person was gone.

"Something up, Cæs?", asked Dáuma. (Franciska, Angela and Anna were currently in the midst of a fun train of conversation.)

"Somebody knocked into me," Cæse said, lightly rubbing her right shoulder. Looking around, she added, "Must've been someone in a hurry."

Their pace took on a bit of a hurry themselves as they went around the DJ stage, quickly retrieving earplugs from their pockets and placing them in their ears when the music started, and joking with each other that they hadn't expected they would need them this early. The music was way louder than what a Gylian would be used to for background music; it certainly drowned out a lot of conversation. Angela wondered if the festival was secretly trying to induce hearing loss in its attendants. Maybe they were sick of how popular they were and wanted to cut down on their audience?

The five women found themselves in the line for Wolfman's Bar and Grill, having come to a spontaneous consensus that this would be a good place to eat. It was around lunchtime anyways - or it had to be, because they all felt hungry and it had really been some time since they last ate, breakfast having been on that passenger ship and a few snacks bought on the way. Most of the tents were for breweries anyways; and there was a Pine Grove restaurant not too far from their hostel. The line gave them plenty of time to study the menu on display and decide what to order. It took them a bit of time to work out how cheap the orders would actually be; they were so used to the thaler that it was quite a mental shift to start working with prices that only had one digit. (They felt right at home when they played in Kirisaki or Akashi, predictably.)

When it came to be their turn to order, Franciska went first. "I'd like plain fish and chips, please."

"Pegasus wings and French fries, please," Cæse said.

"Philly cheese steak, if you could," Anna said. She had recognised the "ph" digraph from her familiarity with Greek, but the rest of the word was unfamilliar, so she pronounced it as she would if it were Gylian: /ɸilːlɨ/, making a slight but discernible pause in order to articulate the two "l"'s. She also rendered "steak" as /stɨk/, a close central unrounded vowel that she'd assimilated quite well in her time in Gylias, considering that it was absent from her native Ruvelkan.

"Buffalo wings, medium sauce, and nachos, queso, thank you," Dáuma replied. (Angela added quietly and sotto voce, "That's a real organised way to order, Dáuma.")

Angela went last: "Pegasus wings and cheese fries for me, thanks." She then gave the waitress a mischievous smile and added, "And I'd like to request permission to appreciate your uniform, please. It looks very nice." (She had noticed and understood her facial expressions and body language. It was a message that happened to be pitched to her frequency.)

When they were asked if they wanted any drinks, they all collectively asked if they could get tapwater. (Tapwater was free in any Gylian pub, nightclub, teahouse... it was tapwater, after all. All you needed was a tap.)

While the patrons began to enter the gates of Confederacy Park, there was a scene of panic over at tent number 2. The Rogue's Brew tent should have been open for business, but Murphy and his Law had put a stop to that. Tom Stilton, the business manager and brother of the head brewer, had arrived early to set up shop. He hadn't got far though before the pump to one of the taps seized up. While he was trying to fix that problem, his niece called to ask for directions. She was lost in the middle of Burgunden, and in the back of her van was all the pre-bottled beer.

It was during the March of the Madcaps that Tom finally got the pump back up and working. He'd negotiated assistance from the Lion Brewery Company next door, and with the added hands, as well as his bar staff that had arrived, he'd managed to catch up with the set up. They had a low table out front for bottles, with another table behind it further inside the tent for the register and more bottles. At right angles to that was the bar, where the problematic pumps were now loaded with four beers: Midnight, Cat's Brew, Sneak, and the Classic. That took up the left side of the tent; on the right were tables for patrons to sit and drink. Tom had scrapped the idea to set up a TV to stream the rugby: with all the hassle there just wasn't time.

Finally Cassidy Stilton arrived with the beer. There was a flurry of activity while she arranged the bottles on the table, but finally Rogue's Brew was open for business, only an hour and a half late. Tom breathed a sigh of relief as he placed the final sign on to the counter. It read:

Rogue's Brew

On Tap

Aurora's glare hardened further as her quarry, now not quite running but moving very quickly, bumped into an attractive female festival goer and didn't even pause to apologize. She slowed as she passed the woman, and said through gritted teeth, "Sorry". Then she quickened her pace again, determined not to lose Hoppy this time.

Melima ducked behind the Rogue's Brew tent to very quickly change back into her waitress uniform, then made her way back to the Wolfman's tent. There was a line starting to form already by the time she returned, and she busied herself helping customers.

Alizee got the honor of dealing with the Gylians. She grinned at Angela's comment. "Thanks," she said. "You'd look great in one of these. Shame we don't have extras to sell." While she spoke, she served up food and drinks for the Chrysalides, who she hadn't recognized yet but was vaguely familiar with. The tap water was an exotic order only because of the prevalence of alcohol at these kinds of events, and was not difficult to get for the women at all. Once the Chrysalides all had their stuff, she gave Angela a flirtatious wink.

Cæse, Dáuma, Angela, Franciska, and Anna thanked Alizée for their orders. Angela reciprocated Alizée's wink with her own cat smile. "Actually," she said, "I don't think we caught your name. If you're not too busy that is?"

Anna, meanwhile, thought, Must take a shitload of dexterity to be able to serve and chat... She looked around — the line seemed as if it hadn't abated. She never quite realised they had accidentally wandered into such a popular place, a realisation that elicited a giggle from her. ...especially with how packed the place is.

When it was time for Alizée to attend to the other customers, the Chrysalides and Anna got started on their lunches. Dáuma felt relieved that her buffalo wings were sauced enough to improve their taste, without burning her tongue and/or roof of the mouth. She felt like announcing this fact out loud to her bandmates.

"Yeah, then you would've had to put me on the second mic most of the concert!", Angela joked.

Cæse ate her food somewhat more slowly; she found the pegasus wings rather spicy. Not quite as spicy as the chicken wings she could order from one of those tiny takeaway shops, but still rather spicy. (She felt rather bad for the people who worked there, since they had to exaggerate with the spices and leave the meat to grill for hours and hours just to soften it to the point where it could be eaten more easily. There was a reason "Gylian meat" was a running joke among Tyran's cuisine.) Still, it bit down and went down quite easy, which was a nice change from the meat that gave her the feeling like she was trying to swallow a rock.

Among their conversation, Franciska asked Anna, "How's that cheese stick, Anna?"

"Quite good," Anna said in between chewing. "I really like the onions. Reminds me a bit of kebab." She chewed some more, looking upwards inquisitively. "Curious thing is, I can't really feel any cheese."

"That's odd," Franciska replied, finishing her bite of fish and chips. "I wonder why they call it cheese stick if there's no cheese in it."

Angela, being right next to Franciska's seat, couldn't help but mentally picture a stick made out of cheese, prompted by Franciska's heavy accent. Cæse eyed Angela's ability to wolf down her pegasus wings quickly with slight envy.

"Something tells me," Dáuma said playfully while elbowing Angela, "you like that server."

"Really? How'd you guess?", Angela replied, sticking out her tongue in jest.

Hoppy Jensen continued to bowl through the crowd, felling some patrons like they were small buildings in the way of his large, hairy, slightly pear shaped monster hulk on its way to climb the highest spire of Metropolis. He never actually laid a hand on any of them, though, and it was a matter of his bulk replacing theirs where they had once stood. Still, beer went flying and angry shouts marked his pathway through the crowd. He had his retorts ready:

"Sod off, yer dangle crammed pus bags!"

"Keep it whar tha sun don't peek under, ya moist cherry stained demons!"

He'd almost made it past the front of the Pavilion when he tripped on the back of a foot (to this day we'll never know if it was intentional or accidental) and went sprawling into the muck.
He turned over and shook it off as the Olwean woman on a mission closed in on him. He was running out of time to scramble away, but finally made his mind up to stand his ground:

"Oi now! What's yer hen-flying fury bout 'nyway, ya piss-whipped harpy? I didn't do nerthin' wrong ta ya? Mind yer oats, ya kint jes' target someone like yer Arnold Flargenbagger robotron now! Ah...Wait...I think I 'member yer curves n' gromples. Do...do ye have a wee rug roach runnin' round wit me DNA? Twas a boffin' bash up of a night if I 'member right. Bout four years goin now, twasn't it?'"

Michel Roessler scanned the crowds to no avail to find his quarry while he dragged along one of his assistants. Belatedly, he wished he'd left a message at all the gates for the Gylian girls to meet with him at a predetermined spot, such as the West Pavilion door. All the other acts had contacted him, even the foreign ones like Scarlett Johannsen and Freestyle and the MC Crew.

Speaking of the Pavilion, there seemed to be some sort of commotion going on near the West end of the Pavilion, but he didn't pay it much mind. The women he was in search of were sure not to cause a disturbance such as that. He was looping his way south of the Meinhardt DJ Stage when he spotted them by the Wolfman's/Reiff tent with his practiced eye. Having seen promotional photos of the group also helped, but not much as they weren't in their typical stage get ups. Still, they weren't dressed like your typical younger Neu Engollian women, which wasn't saying much. With the foreign presence at the AVBF every year, it was a cornucopia of colors and styles. Michel was determined, though, that he had his prey. He strolled up as they had their cartons of food in hand.

"Laaaayyyy-deeees! How-deee-doo!" He said in a high pitched voice, "Awwmahgawd, I have been looking all over for you sweet things!" He dropped the stereotypical flamboyance that entertained some friends and colleagues and brought on the homophobia and got serious with a deeper register voice:
"No, really though, we need to talk. I'm Michel Roessler, by the way, Stage and Musical Director for the AVBF. You might have gotten an email or two from me, or I talked to your manager anyway. I wanted to touch base before a quick sound check. We have a sound proof room backstage for that, so you could familiarize yourselves with the instruments we're going to loan you. Also, just to make sure that we're set in general for the two sets you've committed to and that we're honoring your rider. Hew..." He let out the last puff of breath after the mouthful and took another deep breath as he awaited a response.

David and Erica Toft split up in order to tackle different duties. Erica went off to make some phone calls, first to family. She had a daughter, Abrina, that was staying with Erica's Ex, Derrrin, for the week. She missed her very badly. Then she would call their Mom and maybe the nursing facility where Papop was at. Then some business calls for BB.

Meanwhile, David had cleared his slate with Terembev, giving his VPs full rein there to take temporary charge as they saw fit. He still checked in here and there via phone and text, but it seemed like it was all under control. His focus was on making sure the next few hours continued to flow smoothly. He was slightly concerned that he hadn't been able to touch base with Tom Stilton, from Rogue's Brew, so he headed that direction towards the Rogue's tent.

From what he heard, the rugby matches were in high gear and there was a lot of excitement over on the exhibition pitches. The drama was low, and partly that was due to...
He paused and his heart skipped a beat as he neared the Pavilion and heard a large commotion.
No one could talk that amount of nonsensical gibberish like only one person...thing?...employee that he knew. As he quickened his pace, he whipped out his phone to dial his main assistant for the Festival, Gianarro.
"Gianni! Yeah, it's David. What's the story on Hoppy? I thought he was holed up at that brothel, club, whatever....Well, check now, dammit!...Please."
He rounded the corner, but it was just a sea of heads and bodies and propped arms holding various beer cups, food trays and cartons.

"Oh god! Really? He broke out? How long ago? You should have contacted me right away!"
As he started to break through the crowd, he received verbal confirmation about the same time he got visual confirmation. Hoppy had escaped and made it through the gates to the Fest. David needed to vector in his special security to take care of the situation. Burgunden PD might not act if there was no clear violation occurring.

The Fest continued on despite some of the rude interruptions. The real heroes were the runners. Servers that were equipped with shoulder strapped crates, they loaded up at multiple tents and took orders for generous tips from various VIPs and high rollers to get specific varieties. Most of the time they spent running in and out of the Pavilion. They were pros and were good at barely spilling but just a few drops. They would also take food orders, too. There were those VIPs, who either deemed it too pedestrian to mingle down with the common folk, or were just too restricted by their own security to do such an action. They relied on the runners to bring them the delights they craved from the tents.

Down on the first floor of the Pavilion, a full stocked bar also served mixed drinks with every liquor imaginable from across the Multiverse, including some of the featured ones of the participants. The runners ran orders there, too. Most were Neu Engollian locals, but some were foreigners on special work visas in Burgunden. They were resented, but respected, as they worked as hard for a NS Dollar or Helveti as much as the next runner. They didn't care if they had to deal with bigotry, because they also got to deal with a solid lump of cash when the weekend was over, more than most would see in a few months combined.

Servers and many bartenders at famous restaurants around Burgunden, and even around the Confederacy, took time off in order to moonlight at the Fest, because they could quadruple a full months salary, or even make a quarter year's salary, in that one climactic weekend at the AVBF. Of course, the servers and staff at the surrounding restaurants in downtown Burgunden did quite well too, as the revelry and mobs of tourists weren't just confined to the Confederacy Park grounds that weekend.

Cæse, Dáuma, Angela and Franciska had almost finished their lunch, and Anna had finished hers, when they'd heard someone calling out for some ladies. Initially, they'd paid it no mind because it was a distant voice, and there was no way of telling who it was being addressed to in particular. Unless there were hétaïres around, it was highly likely it just referred to a group of female attendants, and there were many of those around. It was only when it drew closer that they realised it might have something to do with them. And by the time Michel had approached them, slightly tired-sounding, it was obvious.

In the moment it took Michel to take a breath and switch to his 'serious' voice, Angela found the time to point towards him and joke, "I have my doubts that is your natural accent." (Pointing at someone was just something one did while talking in Gylias; it was awkward then to visit places where it was considered rude.)

After Michel introduced himself, the foursome and their manager did proper greetings - introductions, handshakes, hugs and kisses. (The standard greeting among Gylians was an embrace and kisses on the cheek. For obvious reasons, they asked permission first from foreigners if they were comfortable with it, or just opted for caution and used handshakes instead.) "Yeah, we have. Nice to see you in person, Michel," Cæse said, among the others.

Dáuma nodded. "Oh, of course, that's fine," she said. "Yeah, a soundcheck is good."

"And yeah, no worries," Angela said, leaning backwards with a mischievously determined grin and her hands on her hips. "We're doing it. All we really need is the instruments. Everything else we make up as we go along."

Cæse held up her index finger and calmly said, "Have to finish my lunch first." That was easy, considering there was only one last bite left. She took the last food, ate it, and after swallowing it, let out a hearty belch, as was the Gylian custom after one ate a good meal. "Okay, I'm ready."

The other band members did the same routine of finishing their food and burping, and they were now ready to accompany Michel. Angela lingered briefly in place, seeking out Alizée the Olwean waitress, and whispering to her, "We're going in for a soundcheck. Hope you'll have the time to catch our show. All two of 'em, haha!"

The band and Anna followed Michel's lead in heading for the soundproof room. "I hope the rider wasn't much trouble to honour," Anna said.
