Jabberwocky (Dark Whimsical RP OOC)

Welcome to Shuddersroth. Odd name, i'dn'tit? Well, friend, it's an odd sort of village. Used to be
bright, even cheerful if ye can believe it. But that was far before even my time. Nowadays, it's dark even when it ain't rainin', and not too much grows, 'cept for lots of gnarled, thorny things. Aye, and any beasts we get these days have been...well...odd according to most parts of the world. We don't get many visitors, and most folks around here are scared of their own shadows. The ones that ain't usually end up galumphing off into those thorny woods a ways out of the town...None of 'em ever come back, though...Nobody quite knows how things came to be this way. Some say it was the Jabberwock...If it were, well, God save us. They say there's none alive who can slay it...

Image

Welcome to Jabberwocky, a darkly whimsical role-play! Y'all will play as visitors or citizens of Shuddersroth (or something different entirely...)who are drawn onto a quest to slay, you guessed it, the Jabberwock. For setting, think of a bizarre, anachronistic mish-mash of the 17-1800's and the medieval era. Ah, and strange, eldritch flora and fauna (and, perhaps, a bit of magic) abound. Made-up words? TOTALLY COOL! Bizarre gadgets? ENCOURAGED! Any Worldbuilding Suggestions? GO AHEAD! The more whimsical, the better.
~~~~~
The Rules
1) I am the OP. I have every intention of being a kind and just one, but I will not hesitate to crush jerks or any other offenders in my badass OP grip.
2) RL comes first. You are expected to be active, but do not feel immensely pressured to be on all the live-long day. This is for fun, after all.
3) Us3 gud pun!ctuashun 'nd gr4mArZ. Seriously, though. Commas are lovely, and so are properly formed sentences.
4) Use your one-liners sparingly.
5) Ideas? Feel free to post 'em!
6) HAVE FUN! ...Remember what happened to that one guy who didn't? :twisted:
So, no anime....would an image from a game based on an anime also be unacceptable?
I cannot help but imagine the plot of this roleplay as Moby Dick, except with the Jabberwock instead of the great white whale.
Unfortunately I've only read the first 60 pages of Moby Dick, so I won't be able to avoid the mistakes made by the characters of the novel.
It's sort of a realism thing. I find it odd that characters that are real people in their universe are supposed to be envisioned in a cartoonish fashion.
Is this RP whimsical enough for this to occur?
There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.
    -Can be trained to act like a carrier pigeon.
    -Can mimic voices and repeat conversations.
    -Is easily destroyed by stepping on.
They act like pigeons as well, curious and takes breaks as their source of energy is drained when constantly flying and can be trained to be spies.
Is this similar to Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" and "Sleepy Hollow"? Would a headless horseman count as a character or a creature?
Hmm...Depends. It would be cool to have some people on the opposing team if you want to play into that dynamic. And I'm all for whatever Tim Burton-ish shenanigans want to go down.
Name: Orville Quintion
Gender: Male
Personality: Orville has always been one to jump on board with new trends and ideas. He is a forward thinker and innovative, evidence by his continual search for new, more efficient ways to go about his craft. Orville is generally friendly, though only to those who share in his mindset of progress. Those that scorn his inventions or scoff at his designs he typically holds an incredible amount of disdain towards to the point of hostility at times, and violence. He is more than a bit unstable of course (not an unusual character trait in Jabberwocky), though that sometimes helps him in getting his schemes to come to fruition. Orville is quite fond of flesh, blood, and especially the sound a well sharpened blade makes as it passes through a slab of meat. He despises livestock of all kinds, especially Gurds.
Age: 39
Backstory: Orville Quintion was born in Shuddersroth and has never really left the immediate area. He, the only child of his parents, mostly stayed home and lent a hand on the family's relatively small farm, though it was at least large enough to make a young Orville grumble about how much there was to do and how far apart everything was. Though his life was unremarkable, the journeys of his uncle Oliver captured his imagination. Oliver visited often from many far flung places and usually returned with books, drawings, and always with an oral recollection of the sights and sounds that encapsulated his nephew. Although he never left home, he felt like he'd seen half the world himself, and this spurred his interest in reading about the new ideas and developments growing in the cities and away from his humble village, much more interesting than local superstitions and hard manual labor. That wasn't to say he abandoned all of the local tales of course -- he knew many of them to be truth.
When his teenaged years came about it was clear he wasn't interested in learning to herd Gurds any longer, and since his father rarely needed much help about anyway with hired hands readily available, he allowed Orville to see what other trades he might be interested in. Almost immediately upon getting to know the village properly, the wafting scent of blood, raw meat, and (thankfully) dead Gurd assaulted him on the streets. Following this euphoric concoction to the local Butchery, he soon became the butcher's apprentice and spent many a week reveling in the sounds array of blades made when he passed them through the stinky, noisy, dumb, and properly dead animals laid out on the table.
He didn't forget his interest in the world outside Shuddersroth however. In fact, in his 20s it only grew, as he began requesting an aging uncle Oliver to bring back certain trinkets - bits of machinery, the latest technology from the cities. When Oliver hung up his traveling boots for good, he let his nephew be the heir of many of his odder contraptions. Orville started relatively simple in order to understand how these things worked -- an clock that perhaps sliced off a finger if one were to fiddle with the gears like a simpleton while it was in operation, or -- perhaps his favorite -- a muzzle that would snap inwards with great force when the dumb livestock wearing it opened its mouth to loose some obnoxious cry, shutting it up quite effectively.
Today, he is the owner of the butchery, where he lives on the floor above his shop. He lives relatively quietly in his own home, with his many books and attempts at creating some odd gadgets lying about. Most of his creations now seem to involve spinning blades, rotating blades, snapping blades, all in an attempt to increase output and make his job easier. However, some of these contraptions could prove quite effective if weaponized, most likely.
Appearance:
Image
Equipment: A common bastard sword is his most typical piece of weaponry to hunt the Jabberwock. Aside from this he is quite proud of the crossbow he totes (of his own make, though it doesn't stand out in any particular way) and his current project, a long pike with its usual pointed end, though this point is surrounded by four blades projected just below it on either side, which when activated spin around the weapon (in the manner of helicopter blades). He's yet to try this in combat of course
Optional Theme Song: Soon
Anything else?: I'll have to app for the accursed Gurd soon I suppose :p
Is this set in England or America? I think the strange creatures could be explained by being endemic to the New World, perhaps, and thus previously unkown to Europeans. Maybe New England is a good setting?
