The Hand of Fate - Legend of Suriyothai Soundtrack

Suvarnabhumi, the golden land. Straddling the maritime routes between India and the Great Ming, the lands of Suvarnabhumi are diverse, rich and filled with wondrous colour. From the golden stupas of Ayutthaya to the lush jungles of Malaya; from the flowing delta of the Mekong to the mountains of Nam Viet; merchants and adventurers from throughout the known world traverse through the treacherous waters, seeking fame, fortune and peace. From as far as the European edge of Iberia to the northern reaches of Japan, these travellers speak a myriad of tongues, and the faith of different gods. But all are united in the single goal of achieving fame and fortune beyond imagination. Whether through war or trade, these brave souls would venture through monsoon swept waters to earn greatness in the kingdoms of Suvarnabhumi.

But a foul evil had crept into the world. Darkness, both within and external, are poisoning the mortal realm. Strange monsters, known only as Shadows, had begun to emerge, desolating the lands with their mere presence as they sap the very life out of the world. Innocents fear for their lives as bandits and wild beasts predate the vulnerable countryside. Even the very spirits that once lived in unison with mortal men are being twisted by the malice polluting Suvarnabhumi. Beleaguered by the rapidly spreading threat, the King of Ayutthaya had called upon adventurers of all shades to his gilded court, to take up arms on his behalf for great reward, glory and justice.

It is up to you, traveller, to rid the land of blight and return day to the golden lands. Many among you may only find peace in riches or pride, but know that your sword is needed at the world's darkest hour. Succeed, and you may return, lives and riches fulfilled for posterity. Fail, and darkness would consume not only Suvarnabhumi, but all humankind...

Overview

Greetings, traveller, to Suvarnabhumi, 1620 C.E. Wherever your origins across the Old World (or even the New World), you have heeded the summons of King Songtham of Ayutthaya to combat an emerging threat plaguing his rich kingdom. Called Shadows, these malevolent creatures take on a myriad of horrifying form, from giant beasts, humanoid giants or the outright grotesque. Their intentions, if any, remain unknown, though they remain singleminded in their pursuit to destroy all life in Suvarnabhumi and beyond. Already, much of the interior had become blighted, its lush jungles and farmland reduced to barren soil and the light of day blotted by pure despair. None knew how their numbers grow, though rumours of assimilation of wildlife and even people have been abound. What is known is that they are difficult to kill, with a decisive strike at its heart the only sure option of victory.

Magic, if any, is scant knowledge, in a time when the power of sail and gunpowder is fast upending the old power structures of the world. Already, the Iberian powers have taken most of the New World as their own, and their posts scatter along the maritime silk route with their Dutch rivals. Even in Suvarnabhumi, few could claim to have mastered any sort of spell or power, though they might prove useful to the king in such trying times.

Overall, crude steel remains the only real option to combat the monsters, and those opportunistic enough to exploit the chaos to pillage the innocent. You may be a hired hand, but your life is still worth of value to the king, for one less sword is one less hand to defend Ayutthaya, and as dusk sets in on the Golden Land, every head counts.

Nations

The world of Suvarnabhumi is vast and diverse, and the world beyond even more so. From the Taungoo kingdom in the west to Champa, Annam and Tonkin to the East, from the northern Shan to the Sumatran and Javanese sultanates to the south, the lands of Suvarnabhumi speak a thousand tongues to a myriad of gods, both native and foreign. The European colonists who had settled in the region live a tenuous peace with the native inhabitants. Seeking to manipulate the kingdoms against each other and against their rivals, the Iberian kingdoms and Dutch East India Company sought to wrest control of the lucrative trade routes from each other and the local rulers.

OOC: Note that this list is non-exhaustive. If I have missed out any nations of relevance, feel free to highlight. Also, feel free to search for any nation in the early 17th Century.

Indochina (excluding the Malay peninsula)
Called Indochina for its location between the Chinese empire and the Indian subcontinent, the natives of the region had been a melting pot of cultures far and wide. Absorbing the influences of its greater neighbours and adopting them as their own, the kingdoms had since created an identity of its own. Buddhism, both Theravada and Mahayana, dominates Indochina, while the Hindu Chams are slowly adopting the ways of Islam. Regardless, warfare between the various kingdoms remain a reality, with land and rice at stake.

Malay Archipelago (including the Malay peninsula)
Located at the turning point between the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, the sultanates and kingdoms of the Malay Archipelago are many and diverse. Adapting the script and faiths from the Indian subcontinent, these seafaring trade hubs measure their power not by land, but by clients. The age-old Hindu and Buddhist faiths co-exist side by side with the emergence of Islam. However, their faith had given cause for foreign powers to pillage land and trade in the name of their god. Already, the Christian Catholic Iberians are extending their reach in the archipelago, expelling the natives of Melaka and Manila and colonizing the Malukus, Luzon and Visayas. Their Protestant rivals, the Dutch, eagerly exacerbate the tensions, presenting themselves as trustworthy allies to the sultans and rajas against the evangelizing Catholics. All of which amounts to a tense confrontation that pits kingdoms against each other and the occupying European powers.

East Asia
The 'Center of the Universe', as the Han Chinese proclaimed, East Asia is home to the Ming Dynasty, emperors ordained by the heavens to rule over the Middle Kingdom and its vassals. Once, the Ming commanded a vast network of tributaries forged by the eunuch-explorer Zheng He on behalf of the Yongle Emperor, stretching as far as East Africa itself. But those days are long past, and the Ming's war with the rogue islanders of Japan over Joseon has exhausted its armies and treasuries. Rumours of a horse-lord in the north, Nurhaci, is rife, rallying the disparate Jurchen tribes for a great invasion of the Middle Kingdom, while intrigue within the walls of the empire threatened to tear it apart. Regardless, many merchants in Southern China continue to ply the trade route across the South China Sea. as do Korean and Japanese. But as European galleons continue to arrive in droves likewise, a sense of dread from its rulers of its encroaching influence may end the flow of trade for good.

South Asia
The birthplace of the Dharmic faiths, the Indian subcontinent is as much a crossroad across Eurasia as Suvarnabhumi itself. It is here that Indian traders off all shades and faiths ply the roads and coasts, trading spices and silk from the east for gold and silver in the west. Hinduism, Buddhism and later Islam spread to Suvarnabhumi via the rich subcontinent, as did Sanskrit and rules of governing. From the great Mughal empire to the states of South India, the splendour and mysticism of the subcontinent could rival even the great Ming and Romans. But even here, the reach of the European powers was growing, as the Portuguese sought to secure their trade routes from Goa against the Protestant Dutch and British. And thus the complex web of alliances between Europe and India were weaved...

European Powers
Europe, the bastion of Christendom. Constantinople, the former heart of eastern Christendom, is held at ransom by the Mohammedan Turks. The old overland Silk Route had become far too expensive, as the unbelievers levied high tariffs to fund their ravenous wars in Europe. Displeased by the greed of the Venetians and Turks, the kings of Spain and Portugal, by union of the crowns under God, had embarked on a grand mission, to open a new path to trade to bypass the Ottoman Turks and open the riches of Asia directly to Iberia. What these explorers found proved far more, opening the lands of the New World for the first time since the Vikings, and expanding the reach of the empires and the Lord over a vast realm. But the search for pious souls in the east have yielded little, from misguided heretics, pagan kingdoms to the Moorish unbelievers themselves. Force, it appears, seem the only true option for trade, and it is one the heretical Protestants of Britain and the Netherlands are also willing to play, buying the friendship of Moors and pagans against the battered outposts of the Iberian kingdoms.

  • Armorer - Taking care of her beloved musket day-by-day has taught her how to repair it, create gunpowder, and make the projectiles it fires.
  • Silat Perisai Diri Minangkabau - When push comes to shove, one must know how to shield themselves. Minangkabau's style incorporates dangerous fakes, lethal to those who fall for them.
  • Cooking - To take care of one's spouse, good food on the table is of the essence.
Armour: Light footman armor made of a mixture of royal gold and copper, giving it a strong form of brass.
Other Equipment: Maintenance kit, satchel, pockets of gunpowder and musket balls, a thick diary filled with her memoirs and poems, and a cooking set

Physical Description
Height: 180 cm
Weight: 80 kg
Likes: Food, sports, guns, writing, and men - Eat healthy, live healthy, men have freedom that most women just don't understand.
Dislikes: Many things girlish, old-fashioned ideals, Aceh, and Europeans - Minangkabau culture is about equality, and equality doesn't come without new thoughts. Monopolization is also despicable.
Personality: A tomboy in many ways, Zahra holds her head high and doesn't back down from things easily. She gives off an aura of honor, but won't be afraid to get dirt on her feet to retain it.

History
Bios: Born on 1 Ruwa, 1532, Zahra is a member of the royal Pagaruyung family, daughter of the current sultan's brother; Ahdan Syahuddin. Raised to live her life however she wanted, she was very close to the royal guards of the house, often practicing or playing sports alongside the much older males. From her time with them, she was jokingly given the nickname 'Zain', which was also to make sure that if they spoke of her around the royal family, they wouldn't be in too much trouble. She did not forgo any education, though she could be seen dazing off whenever a feminine activity was being undertaken, such as dancing, simple crafts, or singing. The only thing that her mother could get her to do was cooking, of which she did extraordinarily well, though the reason being to fill her own stomach. Another being poetry, which was often only done by males.

Following the forced acknowledgement of the Aceh Sultanate's sovereignty, Zahra was taught politics so that she would not be blind in how governments worked. This fueled her despise for Aceh, of whom she only saw as a greed filled kingdom with no thoughts of anything other than themselves. It was also through this that she began to distrust the Western traders who had arrived in their kingdom and neighboring ones, who were very different in comparison to the Indians and Chinese.

The musket in Zahra's possession is very valuable to her. A gift for her coming of age from an Turkish military advisor who saw potential in her eyes, the gun is in the same condition as when she had come to own it due to constant maintenance. Not many knew how to operate such a weapon in Pagaruyung, and so she was under the tutelage of a mysterious and eccentric old man who claimed to have come from the Far East. With his training, Zahra was able to become not only the first female musketeer in the Pagaruyung kingdom, but also one who can best any colonial ace. This lead to her teaching a small, elite musket unit of the Pagaruyung army, of which is loyal to her even until now.

Unlike most women her age, Zahra had not yet married, though it was expected of her daily by her parents. Very rarely did they ask her of something so dearly, but the young woman simply could not fall in love nor could be forced to marry and nobleman nor commoner. And so, in a quest for both adventure and marriage, the girl set off, looking to see the world, and, hopefully, find someone to share it with her.

Additional Information: Being one of the earlier Muslims in Indonesia, Zahra is sometimes foreign to certain concepts and teachings of the religion, and will sometimes be surprised to learn of certain things. She is also dependent on the Javanese calendar, and will be quite confusing to converse with if asking for the current date.

Though the farms weren't big, it was enough to provided food and income for the family, but not enough to provide education for all of the children in the family, Mustafa included, as his oldest brother was the only one who could went into education properly. Mustafa was a tough and ambitious kid, often worked alongside his father and brothers in the farms, worked hard and toiled hard. He received some forms of education in the mosques by cleric as well as with the other children, at the very least left him educated in some ways.

He was 13 when he was hand-picked by an officer in the Ottoman Army as part of Janissaries recruitment. He and many others endured harsh training to fit them into the service of the Ottoman sultans, with absolute loyalty and forbidden rules on marriage and trading. With the inclusion of Christians who converted into Islam, he began to learned about theology as well. Although in the end he chose the career path as an engineer, providing demolitions and breaching walls and mines of some kind. As an adult, he was involved in Tashikari and Nagykanizsa, both as part of Ottoman Sultan's guardians, though he served as part of the engineers in the Siege of Nagykanizsa.

By the time it's 1617, he was a Captain in the Janissary, and already influential for linguistic path despite only possessing few of the more important languages in Europe, he served as part of Ottoman Expeditionary Force to Aceh, and began to trained them in the ways of Ottoman military, until now.

Umm, Altito, you don't need to put swordsmanship as an ability. With your profession as a janissary, it's already understood that you can fight with a sword. Engineer, however, is an ability, so just add one more non-combat skill or a combat skill that isn't related to your profession.

History (Compulsory)
Bios:

Born in Rhodes, 1580, Mustafa is a son of a family of farmers, mostly wheats.

Additional Information (Optional): He has been involved with Christians Ottomans and non-Ottomans Christians as well as sort of well-versed in the political situation in Europe, but he has yet to ever been involved in something supernatural.

Allowed, but you better have a realistic story about your character. They can't just poof here, and to be honest Cherokee, Navajo and Inuit is stretching it by a lot.

That's what I thought. Thanks. I think I'll go with either a Vietnamese, Tibetan, Korean, or maybe an Ainu character.

Character Information (Compulsory)
Name: Thomas Hawkwood
Age: 29
Place of Origin: England
Gender: Male
Appearance: Thomas

Abilities and Equipment (Compulsory)
Job Description: Merchant
Weapon(s) of Choice: Rapier and flintlock pistol
Notable Skill(s) (3 skills max.): Tactics, linguistics, fencing
Armour (optional): Plate armor (seen in the appearance picture)
Other Equipment (if any): Powder and shot, coin purse, a few texts, a journal, ink, and writing utensil

Physical Description (Optional)
Height: 6 feet
Weight: 175 pounds
Likes: Protestants, making money, reading, studying languages, honor
Dislikes: Catholics, belligerence, brutality, rudeness
Personality: Thomas is intelligent, inquisitive, a decent leader, and generally honorable; though he's not above using the occasional dirty trick to survive a fight.

History (Compulsory)
Bios: Thomas Hawkwood was born in London, England in 1591 to a wealthy merchant family. His parents groomed him to follow in the family business, and to that end provided him with an excellent education. As they had business interests throughout much of the European continent, his parents also made certain that he was instructed in numerous languages, including Latin, French, Spanish, German, Dutch and Italian, and Thomas developed a knack for linguistics as a result. His parent were also devout Protestants, and Thomas was brought up with a healthy respect for the Bible, and a less healthy disrespect for Papists.

For all the lectures he had in economics and languages however, his favorites were always those in history. He loved the stories he was told of gallant knights, like Edward the Black Prince, and dreamed of one day donning a suit of armor and charging into battle for a noble cause. In pursuit of this dream, Thomas began studying biographies and writings of famous military leaders, and convinced his parents to hire a fencing instructor to train him in the art of the sword. As a result he became a proficient tactician, and quite deadly with a blade.

When his formal education was complete, Thomas apprenticed under his father for a few years learning firsthand the merchant trade, but soon became bored with it. He still longed to go off to battle for a noble cause, and in 1618 he believed he'd found one. A group of Protestant nobles in Bohemia revolted against their Catholic King, and clearly would need assistance if they were to have any chance of succeeding. Thomas announced his intention to support the Protestant revolt to his parents, and though they initially opposed the idea, Thomas managed to sway them to his side by convincing them that they had a duty to support their fellow Protestants, and that meant either going to fight alongside them, or providing them with considerable financial support.

After buying their son a suit of armor and a new flintlock pistol, Thomas' family said their goodbyes and Thomas departed for the continent. When he arrived, he came across a group of mercenaries, pledged to fight with one of the Protestant Bohemian noblemen, who were recruiting people to join them. Figuring it couldn't hurt to make a little money on the side while on his noble crusade, Thomas agreed to sign on for a year, and as he was one of the few members of the Company with a knowledge of military tactics (and the only one who could read and write), he was made an officer. The mercenaries taught Thomas a great deal; how to shoot, how to fight from horseback, and a few "less than honorable" tricks to get the better of an opponent. These lessons proved crucial when the actual fighting began, and without them Thomas almost certainly would've been killed in combat. He proved to put his knowledge of tactics to good use, and led the mercenaries under his command to a number of victories over their enemies, but though he proved a competent fighter and leader, he quickly discovered he had no taste for war. The battles he fought were brutal, savage affairs; nothing at all like his history lessons had made them out to be, and certainly nothing like he'd imagined. Not wanting to break his agreement with the mercenaries, Thomas continued fighting with them for the full year he'd agreed to, but in 1619 when his year was complete he opted not to renew the agreement and instead headed back for home.

When he reached the coast he spoke with a number of ship captains, looking to book passage back to London, but while doing so came across a Dutch Captain who told him that he was headed to a wondrous land far to the East so full of riches it was called the Land of Gold: Suvarnabhumi. Figuring such a venture could be an excellent business opportunity for his family, Thomas booked passage on the ship, and after sending a letter home telling his family of his new adventure, he boarded the ship and set sail. The voyage was long and arduous, fraught with danger and disease, but Thomas survived and made it to Suvarnabhumi intact. Thomas has been in the Land of Gold for a few months now, and though he hasn't managed to strike up any business deals yet, he has picked up enough of the local language that he can muddle through most conversations without making a fool of himself, and experienced enough of the local culture that he isn't in total awe of everything he encounters anymore.

Additional Information (Optional): Not that I can think of
