Alveolar trill (rolled R) in your nation

Postby Estado Novo Portugues » Sun Dec 18, 2016 5:44 pm

For those who do not know, an alveolar trill is the "rrrrr" sound made by vibrating the tongue at the front of the mouth. It exists in many languages including Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and of course European Portuguese.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)? European Portuguese

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language? Yes. All Portuguese are expected to learn and be able to pronounce the rolled R sound by the age of 10. It is a sign of education and literacy.

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound? The letter R must be pronounced with a trill in these cases:
  • At the beginning of a word. Example: rio
  • After the letters {l n s}. Example: honrar
  • When there are 2 of them together. Example: ferro
R can also be trilled at the end of a word for emphasis, but this is optional. Example: falar

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R? Because the alveolar trill is part of the standard repertoire of sounds, not being able to roll the R is considered a serious speech defect. Those who cannot do it are considered illiterate, and are frequently teased and ostracised. They may even have difficulty finding work. Think of an English speaker pronouncing rabbit like "wabbit".

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound? If someone still cannot roll the R after the age of 10, he or she will be given mandatory speech therapy to attempt to correct this speech defect. It may not be very enjoyable, but most of the time it will save the person from lots of humiliation later in life.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)? Official languages are English and Spanish. Yakusan is the national language, and there are various regional dialects.

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language? English no. Spanish and Yakusan yes.

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound? Whenever there is an consonant "r" i.e.

Erre con erre cigarro, erre con erre barril, rapido corren los carros, cargados de azucar al ferrocarril.

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R? Nothing much - some people can do it, others cannot.

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound? No.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)? Interstellar English

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language? No.

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound? Only in some dialects do words like "kerro" (Aspenan English for "wall") have this phoneme. Graphically it is identified with <r(r)> and descends from geminate rhotic taps or rhotacism of other consonants, conditioned by placement in stressed or unstressed syllables to trill or tap, in other languages.

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R? They must not speak a language with it as L1.

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound? No.

It occurs in many languages that we speak like Hungarian, Romanian, and Slovak etc.

Some dialects of German have it, especially in certain words like Schmarr'n.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)? Federal languages are English and Portuguese. One state officializes Spanish as its state language.

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language? Yes, for Portuguese and Spanish.

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound? In Devernite Portuguese, this is used a lot. You cannot hear a word with and r without it. The rolled R's are relatively long, too.

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R? Chances are, the victim will get looked at (and maybe even made fun of), but note that one of the official languages of Devernia is English; it's relatively common for native English speakers in the country to not know how to roll an R.

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound? No.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)? English.

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language? No, but many of the absolute oldest TurtleShroomers (age exceeding one hundred fifteen) still roll their R as part of their Russian accent. (The Russian accent was phased out in the early 1900s AD by an influx of CSA investment and wealthy asylum seekers, who pushed their accent in the schools they set up.) As TurtleShroomers are extraordinarily long-lived, there are more supercentenarians that one would think.

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound? N/A, it is only used in those with Russian accents

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R? It's seen as normal. In fact, it's expected. Most TurtleShroomers cannot roll the R.

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound? Absolutely not! Even if TurtleShroom's language/accent/dialect had a rolled R, we would never stoop to something so anti-freedom and un-TurtleShroomian as forcing someone to pronounce something the "right" way as the state defines it, despite being physically unable to do so. Speech therapy is for stuttering and defects, not to change something that some people simply cannot do.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)?

Avendonian

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language?

Yes.

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound?

Wherever the letter R shows up. However, in fast, colloquial speech, pronunciation of an intervocalic R may vary between the alveolar trill and flap in some speakers.

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R?

Either that person comes from somewhere where that sound does not exist, or has a speech impediment.

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound?

No, but generally recommended.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)? Keftian; it is a language closely related to Greek, but also has significant influence from Latin and Venetian Italian.

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language? Yes, but it tends to be shorter and more understated than in many other languages that use it.

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound? Whenever an R precedes or is preceded by a consonant. The Rh vowel cluster is specifically used to indicate that the R at the beginning of a word should be trilled. However, as with any natural language, there are occasional exceptions.

Examples of words with a trill:
Rhython
Rhodos
Palaiokastrio
Xakro

Examples of words without a trill:
Akkotirion
Retimnon
Roma

An exception/mixed example:
Britomartis
In the above example, the first R is trilled, but the second is not, even though by the rules it should be.

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R? Their pronunciation might sound a bit off, but some people might not notice it. All other things being equal, too much trilling sounds more jarring to a Keftian ear than not enough.

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound? No, because it is not considered to be a serious speech impediment. Even if it was, speech therapy is not mandatory under any circumstances.

What is your nation's official language (or primary language if there are more than one)? Binary

Is the rolled R a standard pronunciation in that language? No

When is an alveolar trill used? What are examples of words with a rolled R sound? Never; none

What do people think of someone who cannot roll the R? We won't even know it unless they're trying to speak some kind of human language in the presence of someone else who actually knows that language. In that ridiculously unlikely scenario, the person would be told to install a proper [insert language] data pack. These packs come with all of the language's required sounds so that the user can speak like a native directly after installation.

Is speech therapy mandatory for people who cannot pronounce this sound? We don't have such a thing as "speech therapy." If the installation of a data pack for an alveolar trill-using language does not seem to grant the expected capability, it is an issue that requires Debugging to track down the problem. Such a problem would most commonly result from either an inferior foreign language data pack (most likely), or the use of a substandard or failing voice chip (rare). Either problem is simple to fix if the person is willing to shell out for even mediocre equipment. Only serious junk packs/parts can't replicate a sound that a human can make!

Our most common language is English, which does not have a rolled R.

The native Fatatatutian language has been declining but it is making a comeback. The Letters R and L are somewhat interchangeable and people who have difficulty pronouncing R (without a trill) often use L instead.
