Markelsburg Marauders

Stadium – The Glass House, Markelsburg

Spectators – 17.500

Sponsorship – VLGW – Von Lanthen Glass Works

Colour Scheme – Blue with grey accents

Image

The first team of the TOPS will operate from Markelsburg, the pearl in the crown of the northeaster province of Gachsfall and house to a little less than a million citizens. Located in a natural port, the ‘City of Steel’ traces its history back to over three centuries when the first waves of immigrants brought industriousness and toughness to these shores – two characteristics still highly valued in the region and bound to be instilled on the Marauders.

Football has been engrained in the blood of the region, as is witnessed by local heroes such as Markelburg United, Feuerverein M and Club Markelsburg, sides which were or are at the pinnacle of our amateur sport. But the area has gained even more notoriety as one of the industrial heartlands that brought wealth to the entire nation. No wonder that their stadium, which they share with local Bransweg College, is named after one of the defining sectors of the province and their main sponsor, the reputed Von Lanthen GW.

Management of the franchise will be shared by two men who have their roots in Markelsburg and combine knowledge in business and sports to bring them to unseen heights. In a span of less than twenty years, Gerard Lammers grew to a corporate manager in the manufacturing industry, most notably at Ramm Powertools. He will team up with Edvald Schon, a rising star when it comes to football tactics and previously the head coach from Bransweg College.

Marquee Player One – Stefan Hammer

A small miracle which shows that miracles are still around, “a boy’s dream coming true”, the 34-year old called when he knew he would not only represent his birth city in the inaugural season of the TOPS - but would do so with the captains’ ribbon around his arm. Hammer has earned his credits on the midfield of Club Markelsburg after graduating with the highest honours from the college in town. But please consider Hammer to be more than just a token local as he combines natural leadership with a thunderous left foot and a strong header.

Marquee Player Two – Icham Posen

The masses at the Glass House will not have to look far for a fan favourite, as the quick and agile Posen will join their ranks. Some might say he only uses his left foot to step off the bus, but he brilliantly compensates that with his right. Amazing dribbles and telepathic crosses galore with this fellow who makes direct opponents crazy and crowds wild. At 26, this Lanrock College graduate has evolved from someone who draw supporters to a player who turns games around. Having him immediately opens up the quest for a reliable targetman in attack.

Marquee Player Three – Bjoerg Sundsdorf

People might be a tad surprised to see him appear as a marquee player but those never seen Sundsdorf lead a defensive line-up. Towering over his teammates at 1 metre 95, it is no miracle that he’s an assurance on overview and tactical capacity. It makes sure he doesn’t need much speed but a sharp tackle does the job when things get tight. Remarkably never been in college football, he has been a vital part of a baker dozens teams and as such should have the experience to be a backbone to this formation. A tough fellow for a tough competition.

Riviera Rovers

Stadium – Scala, Fonzana

Spectators – 19.350

Sponsorship – Sforza Resorts

Colour Scheme – Purple with white accents

Image

It is no major surprise that the epic battle of the TOPS will also take place at the Riviera, the idyllic southern region that has become the biggest touristic attraction point in the nation with its combination of pearly beaches, diverse agriculture and pittoresque cities. Making the bridge between its bigger neighbours Catanzano and Pontemboli, Fonzana might be the smallest amongst the team home cities (180.000 inhabitants), but forms the linchpin of a major agglomeration of two million locals. Managing to capture its former beauty yet combining it with a trendy outlook, Fonzana fuses tradition with an exciting edge.

Millions of tourists visit the region on a yearly basis and have already discovered the love for the leather ball that is strongly entwined with the local culture. You’ll find them playing on the beaches, but also in the marvellous squares where any slab of concrete suffices for an instant football ground. No wonder that several amateur sides made their mark and the ground of one of them, Internationale, has been ameliorated and modernised to form the temple for the Rovers, the Scala where the stars can go on stage.

All of this happens with substantial support of Sforza Resorts, the luxury hotel chain with its roots in Fonzana. The commitment of this family business goes so far that owner-to-be Manuele Sforza will use his knowhow and vitality to support the Rovers businesswise. On the pitch, the squad will be lead by Giuseppe Borgarelli, a man who has been married with football for over five decades. After a fruitful career as a player, he formed a pivotal figures in many talent discoveries, booming the sport in the area.

Marquee Player One – Claudio Volpa

Building a strong starts with a reliable defence, says an old football adagium and the Rovers can bank on that with Claudio Volpa. Despite being only 28 years old, the grizzled goalie is a legend in the region due to his unique combination of power and reflexes. It makes him one of the only three goalkeepers to earn a status as marquee player, being well known for his adventures with Stella Pontemboli and previously at Collegio Technico. This fan-friendly fellow is more than often characterised as a natural leader and has proven to withstand pressure.

Marquee Player Two – Ettore Ortolano

But results not only comes from stopping balls, also from putting some against the opposite net. No wonder that Riviera Rovers welcomes Ettore Ortolano with great joy whose goalscoring records still are unrivaled at UniCatanzaro. Famous for the formidable cannon hiding in his right foot, Ortolano is a powerful targetman who endangers the goalkeeper from any corner. A beast on the pitch and a society figure of the grass, due to a marriage with model Elena Bartelli. But we’re sure the cameras will be snapping for him as well when he makes the nets tremble.

Marquee Player Three – Alketas Kaloufanis

Far too often, the term ‘box-to-box’ has been overused when discussing modern football but for Kaloufanis, it fits like a glove. Combining an amazing stamina with the capacity to spot opportunities to pop up in front of either goal, he formed a backbone of any team of which this 32-year old from Port Central has ever been a member, were it at Takazami University, Olympique Central or Spartak Kaznorod. A travelled and educated man, having someone like Kaloufanis in your squad could be an advantage for the group atmosphere as well.

Vardeaux Rapids

Stadium La Forgerie, Vaseaux

Spectators 24.000

Sponsorship Pure Drinks

Colour Scheme – Light blue with red accents

Image

The TOPS will take place in all corners of the nation but one city that could not be missed is 1,6 million metropole Varneaux, a marvellous pearl that has become a pole of attraction for artists and industrials alike. Based on the banks of the Varne, the city traces their history back to the very first settlers. Being the largest by far little over a century ago they have gone through a difficult reconversion, but with success. The launch of two new waterbased powerstations revitalised the region and brought a new blossom to this marvellous town.

Considering the attractive combination of past and present, it is no surprise that Varneaux has always been a stronghold when it comes to entertainment. The Lazinère Movie Studios are just around the corner, it holds the Clavé Theater and several dance halls putting on the edge when it comes to all that is new and flashy. Sports have not been an exception to that rule with several outlets, be it in racing - car, horse or cycling, make your pick! - or the remarkably popular boxing scene. But football will always have a special place in the hearts and minds.

A pivotal figure in all that has been Luk Caritoux who followed a remarkable path. Initially active as marketing figure for a small company, his life turned around when they started sponsoring the local league. In a few years time, he ran the competition as a whole and made it one of the most professional in the nation. This experience combined with the on-the-pitch capacities of head coach Francois Heider should allow the Rapids to battle for the title.

Marquee Player One – Gerard Duval

The Rapids can kick off their set of players with a man who is an experienced fox at 35 but still full of enthusiasm and youth. A late blossomer, Duval only came at the surface a year or nine ago but has since impressed with his unmatched vision and impeccable attitude. A deep-lying playmaker, Le Moustache rarely opts for a horizontal pass yet still manages to deliver the vast majority. It makes him a crucial player in the buildup, especially if a strong sidekick cleans up the rubble and opens up space. Additionally, he’s rumored never to have missed a penalty.

Marquee Player Two – Bryan De Vlaeminck

One of the younger marquee players in the pack, this hardworking youngster from Villeneuve, an impoverished suburb near the Varde banks, will immediately grow into a fan favourite. Piles of class and a lung or four, he goes up and down the right wing to deliver perfect assisting passes and clean tackles. Sometimes a bit too rash for comfort, he racks up more cards with his tongue than with his feet but his temper also forms a driving force for a side when used cleverly. His past cooperation with Heider at Union Vardeaux should allow him to excel at the fullest.

Marquee Player Three – Moussa Danje

If you’re over a meter ninety and tend to enter the box with only one target, scoring a goal, being nicknamed The Danger is not just an entertaining wordplay on your name but a token of your significance for any team. Aged 29, this striker could be crucial in the future of the Rapids with his seemingly endless stream of goals evidencing his capacity. Some would call him lanky and even a tad clumsy and there is still a wide margin for improvement when it comes to defensive lucidity but the way he endangers opposing goalies makes him an amazing player.

Tirsha Tigers

Stadium Al Sharkom Stadium, Tirsha

Spectators 22.080

Sponsorship Kerfa

Colour SchemeOrange with black accents

Image

The trade cities on the southwestern shores of Transtopia have huge historical value in the prospering of the nation and the city of Tirsha has always been the most reputed of them all. A cultural melting pot caused by the large port, it is a lively patchwork of characteristic and exiting borrows. The hot centre is being swapped for the cool breeze of the sea, that has brought all sorts of good not indigenous to our country such as coffee, tea and a variety of spices. The population is often called spicy as well, being known for their thunderous hospitality.

Half a million proud and enthused locals can now also root for their football team, another showcase of how the city not only is geopolitically attached to the remainder of the state - having their city state merged just sixty years ago - but also culturally. For a long time, football was not high on the agenda but a boom of teams has changed all that. As is witnessed in the Riviera, the beautiful game is processed in the streets and alleys and the amount of youngsters wearing shirts of their favourites is impressive - prepare to see a wave of orange take over the city!

The team will, contrary to most, be governed by a triumvirate with Yusuf Hasmy as most familiar face. Coming from a family of merchants, Hasmy has build an empire in logistics under the name Kerfa. He will be assisted on a day-to-day basis by Farouk Thomas, who has build experience in the scene of cage football - vastly popular in the region. For the work on the pitch, the Tigers have put their hopes on Majeed Addu, who makes up for his lack of experience with cunning tactical skills and the capacity to motivate his team to the fullest.

Marquee Player One – Ahmad Karan

After a long odyssee, Karan comes home to the place where it all started for him. Born in Tishra a good thirty-three years ago, the family Karan moved around across the nation to follow father Karan, an esteemed engineer. Subsequently, he followed a masters study at Roxford College, not only top in the nation when it comes to education but also to football. Since, he has played for half a dozen sides in all sorts of competitions, where his great passing and leader capacities made him a key figure. The face and head of the team and possibly the most famous football player in the nation.

Marquee Player Two – Alpay Aziz

One of the safest pairs of hands in the business, Alpay Aziz hails from neighbouring Karmalu where he has been between the posts for nearly a decade at local Racing Club. Despite being a high-profile player during his college years, he never left the club of his heart and it pained him to take on professionally for ‘the rival city’. Nonetheless, it is a win for the competition as a whole that this goalie will appear and probably will capture the limelight as a topnotch candidate for glory. Quite a presence in the box, he’s not as quick to the ground as he once was but that rarely halts him for a good performance.

Marquee Player Three – Pasha Ghanuk

While most players have given up the custom to play under a nickname, the figure of Pasha Ghanuk still arouses enough excitement that even if he wanted to switch to his full name - James Stewart El Ghanuk - no one would accept it. While some will comment upon his efficiency, he should draw thousand of fans to Al Sharkom just by himself, always giving the crowd a little bit of his magic to treasure. Impossible dribbles, great guts on and off the ball and pandemic drive, all of that in just 1m60 of golden talent.

Hillsford Knights

Stadium Royal Arena, Starclough

Spectators 18.600

Sponsorship Callmore

Colour SchemeRed with white accents

Image

Although operating from its smaller twin city Starclough, the Knights will represent the capital city of Hillsford in the inaugural TOPS edition. Its central position has always made the city the crossroads of the northern regions, seeing it blossom already in the early ages of discovery and having been the most populous city in the nation ever since, boasting nearly three million inhabitants - four when including the agglomeration with Starclough. Whether it comes to architecture, culture or economy, Hillsford always has been at the pinnacle and they aim to do so in football as well.

Apart from its vast economic industriousness, the city has been known for its immense diversity - remarkable in a nation with strong regional identities. Subsequently, the sports scene has been known to hold a manifold of different disciplines with king Football giving room to many others. Nonetheless, over the years, a good tradition has been build with teams like Hillsford Sport and Red Star Hillsford each occupying a unique place in history. No doubt that the stadium, shared with Royal College, will be packed for the Knights.

The man overlooking the squad in all this is no stranger to the ground, one of the most marvellous in the nation. After all, Jeb Grant has been coaching the college side for nearly a decade and has demonstrated his capacity to bring the best out of young players there. To allow him to focus on launching up and coming talents, the more organisational side of things will be covered by Evgen Bolland. Bolland has no previous experience in sports but is considered a key man in Callmore, the communications company that supports the Knights.

Marquee Player One – Frederick Lewis

With the marquee players, the TOPS tries to ensure that the best players are distributed amongst the teams whilst local heroes wear the shirt they’re destined to. Assigning Lewis to the Knights catches two birds with the same stone. Born and raised in Hellls Quarter, a borough in the heart of Hillsford, he not only shares the typical accents with the fans but also the irrepressible urge to become the very best. As an attacking midfielder, he’ll always take the shortest road to the goal, no matter what, eager to exercise his excellent shot. A fighter and a winner.

Marquee Player Two – Jeff Hasmani

As if Lewis as a posterboy was not making this team dauntless enough, the addition of centre back Jeff Hasmani should ensure no prisoners are being made. Always aware of his limitations on the technical front, Starcloughborn Hasmani knew that football at the highest level was only possible if he was capable to compensate that with physical prowess and tactical cunning. Never shy of a professional foul, The Wall is rarely dribbled and combines that with a loud mouth to push forward his teammates without getting caught for shunning the referee.

Marquee Player Three – Emerick VanDorp

There is something about VanDorp that seems a bit out of place. Considering his size, few would reckon him to be a winger and his stats show a disproportional goals-to-assist ratio for his position. You might wonder who put VanDorp there but it will be the one who saw him rush past a direct opponent and into the box, a threat that endangers any defence in the country. Only 27, this Starclough University graduate still has a decade of ripping apart opposing teams ahead of him and the Knights count on him to lift the team to a reign.

Shuzen Silverblades

Stadium Silver Stadium, Shuzen

Spectators 19.000

Sponsorship Oh-Se!

Colour SchemeSilver with yellow accents

Image

The largest of the ‘Three Sisters’, the triumvirate of metropoles that dominate the fertile hills of the south, Shuzen makes an excellent location for the sixth team in the TOPS competition. Forming the trading center of a region with over three million inhabitants, Shuzen is on the crossing of three major ways that cross the nation: the road from Hillsford to the south, the Rantze river and the railroad that connects Tirsha with Vardeaux. That pivotal position in trade has allowed the city, traditionally linked with the production of pottery, cutlery and wood, to take a more merchants approach.

For a long period, football was not at the top of the sports agenda in the region and, in the shadows of other athletes, only few players ever bridged the gap to neighbouring provinces. Such has changed last decade with the intro of a regional semi-pro championship and after some growing pains, this has put the foundation on which this new club can prosper. As such, the Silverblades will not only represent the city of Shuzen but overarches the city derbies and should put everyone in the region behind the squad. No wonder that they’re sponsored by Oh-Se!, the popular and omnipresent clothes and jewlery line with its local roots.

Of the eight editions of the local competition, four were won by the Guando Pirates and it is no wonder that their gaffer Su-Jo Kim was asked to step up and take the helm over at the Silverblades. Known for his tactical cunning and discipline, he is the right man to transform a bunch of strangers into an oiled machine. He will all liberty to do so from team manager Keisuke Dong who himself claims that his first responsibility is in the background. A duo that stands for focus and dedication - a recipe for success?

Marquee Player One – Takayuki Arashiro

Although strikers will always have a special aura in football, there are few places where they are so admired as in the region of the ‘Three Sisters’. Native to Guando, Arashiro has been the star striker for the local Pirates for as long as the competition stands, taking no less than five Golden Boots with him and an impressive ratio of 0.89 goals per match. Although he is turning 33 next summer, there is little doubt that Kim will use him as a key figure in the team tactics. Previously considered more of a poacher, his work rate has gone up as has his positioning, allowing him to bring more teammates in a scoring position.

Marquee Player Two – Andy Park

The perfect example of the harmonious melting pot of Transtopia, Park was raised in the southern city of Palmena as the son of a Suzhen father and Hillsford mother. Managing to juggle engineering studies with a thrilling college career as a goalie, he became a small sensation in his senior year by almost breaking the national clean sheet record - only to see it broken in the extra time of game eleven. Nonetheless, no one questions the skills of this very athletic and quick goalie who combines intelligence - he is halting his staff position in a nuclear plant for football - and drive.

Marquee Player Three – Timur Wang

There is an old adagium in football that claims that the weakest link in the squad usually occupies the right-back position but those who supported Suzhen Dynamo probably won’t agree with this as Wang holds down the fort there in defense and provides several stinging impulses to the attack. Formerly a striker, Wang fell back a row during his final year at Qin College and did this once more when joining Dynamo. The result is a wingback who offers more than just defending and has both a great long-distance shot and a very elaborate tackle amongst his list of options.

Braskov Bears

Stadium Snowdome, Braskov

Spectators 28.000

Sponsorship Grom

Colour SchemeBrown with black accents

Image

Although not the capital of the vast northeastern province of Shapka, an honour held by the small administrative city of Karz, it was inevitable that Braskov would host a team for the TOPS competition. Due to its location in the Bay of the White Rock, the climate is relatively moderate for the region and has as such been a pivotal city for the fishing industry. Lately, the relative importance of the canneries dwindles for other heavy industry, such as car manufacturing, ensuring the prosperity of the city. Of the 800.000 inhabitants, a few thousands are employed by Grom, active in the construction of cranes, bobcats and other heavy rolling material.

Inspired by lacklustre stories of poor weather and hard-nosed inhabitants, the heritage of the region gets vastly undervalued. Incorrectly as there is a diverse and exciting cultural background and a thrilling new music scene. In terms of sports, Braskov was an early adapter of several sports, with a very active boxing scene and they certainly have a fine history when it comes to football. A travelling team, Braskov Wanderers, is still considered one of the best ever to have graced the pitches, striking fear in any opponent they duelled with. It is this legacy that the Bears hope to defend in the TOPS.

For doing so, they had to hire the very best and when it came to the coaching jacket, they found it in a former member of the Wanderers. Piotr Malusz held up a reputation as a ruthless central defender and is an advocate of a tight organisation with a quick counterattack. However, he makes an art out of it and puts his team to work to be as efficient as possible. Something which should be supported by the brand-new team manager, Evgueni Konalenko - a man with years of experience in college football.

Marquee Player One – Fedor Gavrilov

If you want to bring a sharp and efficient tactical ploy to the pitch, you will need a right hand as manager who brings theory into practice. The sturdy defensive midfielder Fedor Gavrilov should bring exactly that. Despite having grown up in the suburb of Kubra and as a Braskov Technical alumni, this grassroots player should not just be seen as an interesting local. Next to his leadership capacities, he holds the key for quick and effective football with a fine cross pass and the vision to deliver the ball to the forwards as quick as possible. Nicknamed ‘The Pillar’.

Marquee Player Two – Konstant Rashvili

If you want to have a quick counterattack, you’ll need someone quick and Rashvili exactly delivers on that front. Stuck to the left wing, his feet tend to be default in the ‘Roadrunner’ mode but do not fear, he is more than just a runner. Gifted with a marvellous crosspass, Konstant Rashvili will deliver the leather anywhere in the box and with his 26, he’s still capable to do so for a decade. His career in college, where he represented Worsa Uni, is still fresh in the memory of many - especially as first local winner of the John Malarkey Trophy, the MVP price.

Marquee Player Three – Karl Silny

If there is one thing assured with the set of marquee players that will grace the shirt of the Bears and it’s that they will give more than a hundred percent and put up a fight for their colours. A fighter and a defender, it seems as if Karl Silny was born as a grizzled back - playing for nearly fifteen years for local giants such as Brasnov Club and Levski Galea gives one a certain shine of eternality. His speed has waned but he compensates with an amazing header and a knife-like tackle. His shady reputation of the pitch, including bar fights, throws a shadow on him but those in the know call him a loyal and reliable player and person.

Aviéda Armadillos

Stadium Il Barril de Polvora, Aviéda

Spectators 14.500

Sponsorship Especial

Colour SchemeGreen with white accents

Image

As dangerous as such claims may be, Aviéda makes a solid case for its touristic catchphrase of the ‘oldest city of the nation’. Boasting a long history that can be traced back to the very first colonists to sail towards Transtopia, the former port district still has the distinct atmosphere of the old days. Previously, there was a monumental city centre as well until a gargantuan fire set that part ablaze. The population, however, made the best out of a difficult situation and it is now appreciated nationwide as an example of modern, ecologically responsible and people-focussed architecture.

By the time the modern sports landed at our shores, the pivotal position of Aviéda as international port had already been waned and replaced for a more inwards-directed focus - still being a commercial hub for the fertile agricultural industry of the region. As such, football did not thrive immediately but has made up the backlog in the meanwhile. Being coloured by a very specific flavour of soccer, boasting a combination of passing attacks and rough defending, the local clubs recently endanger the more known names both in club football, Athletic Aviéda and Club Plavon, as at a college level with Old Technical and Ruggiero College, the reigning national champion.

Instigating a remarkable career switch, it is one of the people behind the latter university that will be the team manager for the Armadillos. Luis Oliveira Bravo started as a maths professor and used this knowledge to bring a data revolution to football in the region. It goes without saying that he is eager to bring this background to the professional pitch as well. For the ground work and specific player improvement, he teamed up with Carlos Velga, the 56-year old former assistant coach from Athletic Aviéda, a familiar face in the city.

Marquee Player One – Bellió

Connaisseurs claim he would make the perfect number six, because his passing rates nearly hit a full hundred procent and his positioning allows him to pull the plug on any opposing attack. Other rather see a modern ten in him, who combines obligations in defence with exciting through passes and a dangerous shot on goal. In practice, we’ll generally see the flawless technical and tactical toolbox of Bellió - son of a rich movie magnate and known for his passion for art - employed as a number eight where he rows in against the idea of the running box-to-box. “The ball might think slower - but he runs faster,” is his adagium.

Marquee Player Two – Fede Gonza

Complementing Bellió at Club Plavon as two pies in a pot, it is no surprise that Fede Gonza is picked up by the Armadillos as well. But don’t be mistaken, Aviéda has not chosen him over all others just for the marvellous feel-good story of a wealthy wizard with the ball and a rags-to-riches battler becoming best friends on and off the pitch. Fede Gonza, a reliable defending midfielder, earns a spot in his own right. Notorious for his grinta and eternal refusal to give in, Gonza combines knifelike tackles with a dangerous long-distance shot. A man of the people and admired for it.

Marquee Player Three – Ezequiel Carretero

Completing the list of marquee players as an often chosen brand, this all-out striker should provide the Armadillos with the a cartload of goals. Strong yet surprisingly quick, powerful but clever enough to avoid the duel when necessary, it is no surprise he has been called ‘The Matador’ as he wore the red shirt of Unieda San Salvador. Carretero can drive a defender mad and it is no surprise that it is often in the decisive last minutes of the match that he makes the difference. If the partnership with Bellió clicks, we see him as a potential Golden Boot.

International
Draft

For the opening season of the TOPS a diverse group of 24 international players have been signed, an exciting mix of former internationals, players with vast experience in the biggest competitions of the multiverse and fresh and promising talents eager to step up to the next level. These footballers will be distributed amongst the eight teams, three for each.

In a random order, reverse to the one from the Inaugural Draft, all eight sides will be allowed to sign a player. If all eight have selected one additional player, they can do so again in the same order and then a third time, till the whole selection has been emptied. In the future, the TOPS aims to add more international players to the competition but have decided on a maximum of 48 internationals signings - hoping in doing so not to nip local talent in the bud.

Contrary to marquee players, international players can be used for transfers between the squads - however, the amount of non-nationals signed can not exceed five right now. As a general rule, such may never be more than two above the average. In the following preview, all 24 are introduced in short before the actual International Draft.

Aabid Abdelrahman - Gadirya - 19 years old - Right Winger

With a name that just begs for an alphabetical overview, it is no wonder that we start with Abdelrahman, a junior Gadiryan attacker who is eager to start his football career after an education at the In Taman training center. The Baptism of Fire triumph showcased that there is a so far unmined well of talent available in this young country. With his speed and flair, Aabid hopes to blossom in the TOPS - a raw diamond for a manager who likes to work with youngsters.

Sana Asrori - Iskandervale - 23 years old - Striker

An exciting mix of the crafty street footballer and rough and raw standard Nepharim mindset. Ever since the Sameba invasion, this international had to craft a career of her own and did so in the Second Division with Greygate. However, this Lokomotiv Iskandabad graduate has more capacity than that and hopes to have her professional breakthrough. Not afraid of using the laser-guided elbow for some, ambitious and driven according to her fans. And there might be plenty of those to go round in a year.

Yemi Akintola - Semarland - 21 years old - Attacking Midfielder

Midfielders who want to push forward are as admired in Semarland as in Transtopia, so it’s quite a surprise no domestic side picked up the quick Yemi Akintola. Being a central member of a generously talented Sporting Solsholm generation, he got a bit leapfrogged by Assubonteng and decide to give his career an exciting vibe in the TOPS. Akintola should offer the team that signs him a creative addition and a player eager to improve.

Timothe Bevan - Eastfield Lodge - 24 years old - Left Midfielder

A product of the Eastfieldian youth pyramid, Bevan got his formation at the Half Copper Academy, and as did three of his fellow graduates, he made the move abroad. However, after six years for Recuecn side Écho SC, that dream came to an end. A return home could have been an option but as a proud Lodgian, he was eager to showcase his talent abroad. Seems to possess the right and hardened spirit of a journeyman to make it in a new and difficult competition.

Marcelo Boateng - Semarland - 21 years old - Striker

Trying to make a name for yourself as a young striker in Semarland is hard enough as it is, let alone that half a dozen other players share that name with you. For this Kangemark Sport prospect, there was no more room for a transition from U21 to the Premarligaen being in the same group as Devante Matthias, but joining the TOPS should allow him to develop his unmistakable talent. Despite his age, he is very strong and with the right guidance on technique, he could go far.

Daniel Bowyer - Nephara - 32 years old - Striker

We’re very curious to see which team will pick up this tall, orthodox striker. After a full career for Cypher Town, it’s with a tear in the eye that Bowyer leaves his former youth team behind. Admittedly his figures in the Premiership aren’t too great but his goal scoring tally in the First Division confirms that he will be a valuable figure for the teams that picks him up. It will take a time before he forgets about Cypher, but when it happens one can be sure of a loyal player with a genuine love for the game.

Capitale - Dainer - 17 years old - Striker

Despite spending most of its time on the elevator between the second and third team, Olhiderts is considered a respected squad in the gargantuan talent factory which is the Daineri pyramid. We can’t but feel that the Wisemen have fostered a new raw diamond in Capitale, the junior striker who as no other knows what to do when a ball gets thrown at him - score! Often criticised for his lack of other skills, but a genuine goalgetter is worth his weight in gold.

Hecate Charing - Brenecia - 35 years old - Midfielder

Charing is ready for the TOPS, it’s rather the question if the TOPS is ready for this veteran star. With 21 caps for the Patriots, she demands a certain of respect but deserves so considering her marvellous track record in the Brenecian competitions which lead past Gallant Cross, Rozelle and Falkner. Unafraid to speak truth to power, this dressing-room leader has a clean strike of the ball and makes up in technique whatever is lacking in speed these days.

Matthias Dawsell - Mercedini - 19 years old - Right Midfielder

Experience comes in many forms but one of the best ways for young players to get a grasp of the requirements of professional football is partaking in the DBC. Dawsell was a starter for the Eaglets in the last Di Bradini and although their dream ended in the opening round, one could easily say that should be enough sign of his talent one needs. Exton Oilers delivered an interesting wing midfielder who should already have the volume to make his mark on the game.

Renat Del Pierre - Semarland - 21 years old - Attacking Midfielder

One of no less than four Semarlandian prospects - a backdoor in the regulations, we presume -, Del Pierre has been one of the most highly anticipated youngsters from Arkrau Club. Already a star in their U16 and an international for the U18 outfit, he seemed to stall a little when joining the U21. Slightly disappointed not to break through to the full squad, there is a lot of motivation to prove them wrong in this highly talented and technically impeccable midfielder.

Ruben Fransen - Audioslavia - 32 years old - Central Defender

Having made quite a career for himself in Semarland for Copenbrok Klub, Fransen can look back at a season or six in the Premarligaen. However, as this rough and tough defender seems to have become an unwanted quantity for his team, the TOPS decided to relieve him from his contract with one year left to go. For the future, this avid tackler should be all to reinforce one of the TOPS teams with his knowledge and background for the past.

Stepan Heskovizenako - Amberian Islands - 31 years old - Left Defender

Sports reporters and right wingers alike fear this left defender, from one of the up-and-coming nations from the recent Baptism of Fire. After a solid season with quality mid-table formation AG Sparta Equlavik, Heskovizenako adds reliability as member of the least-beaten backlines from his competition. Being one of the few of his nationality abroad, this Amberian could look out for a few caps in the autumn of his career - if his NT partakes to the WC, that is.

Rainer Hildebrandt - Nephara - 37 years old - Central Defender

There is experience and there is being a guide to a team. With his commanding presence on and professionalism towards fans and press off the pitch, Hildebrandt will be a force to reckon, despite the fact that his age wore out his speed. A decade and a half for Maximum Rovers, Cranequin Wanderers, Armstrong and Corvette Maulers under the belt, being a key figure in the promotion of the last two to the top flight. Seems a sure bet when it comes to the captains brace.

Brianna Jacob - Cosumar - 31 years old - Central Defender

In a world where the transfer window is almost as anticipated as the international results, loyalty is a value that not always gets the praise it deserves. Having broken through the ranks of Na’Malsille Mariners as a college graduate, Jacob has known all ups and downs of her team. She played a crucial role when they grabbed the Kings’ Cup against all odds but the latest drop to the second tier was too much. Leaves the Harlighet Ligan for the TOPS with a lot of experience under her belt.

Jared Jones - Ethane - 29 years old - Central Midfielder

Although being a much respected midfielder in the Ethanian Flame League, making it to the starting team of a top-class side as Letson Town is never an easy task. Eager for more playing minutes after being on and off the bench with them, Jared Jones took a new start in Myana but as the Chromatikan league disbanded, Jones had to look for a new home. He hopes to find so in Transtopia, where many a team could use an above-average skilled midfielder like him.

King - Dainer - 34 years old - Defender

Of course, Dainer has gathered quite a reputation when it comes to fostering quick and exciting attackers, but they do have a line of surprisingly powerful and interesting defenders. King is a member of the second flavour, having made most of his career at Adubo Fértio and now deciding to make the big step abroad. In a novice competition, staging a player who has the experience to regroup the troops could make a huge difference.

Mikke Lovenkrands - Semarland - 20 years old - Central Defender

Coming out of one of the talent factories with which Semarland is blessed, Mikke Lovenkrands got his training over at perennial mid-table side Copenbrok Klub. Despite the defensive breakdown of the squad last season, the competition of Cosumarite Bekant and local talent Haugen disallowed him long-term perspectives. Such was, however, a motivating factor for Lovenkrands to join the diaspora of Semar talent - ensuring their presence in practically all leagues.

Maracatu - United Sunrise Islands - 18 years old - Right Defender

Although the official papers speak of a fellow called André Luís Claro Salve-Nós, we’re allowed to say Maracatu against one of the most motivated players from the pack. Hailing from the city of Carnival, this defensive sheriff won’t do anything half-assed. Some might call him a whole package to handle but those who can channel his energy will probably have a lot of fun with this former Floresta 42’ defender - if you make it through the manual of this street footballer, that is.

Taylor Morrison - Super-Llamaland - 31 years old - Left Midfielder

Although some whisperers claimed that the TOPS have signed a Calvinball legend - some of our prospectors are still trying to figure out what that would be - we are quite sure they simply drafted a quality midfielder from the recently rebranded New Llama Cyclones/Capitals. For long a key figure and playmaker, Morrison had to stap aside for young gun Nemanja Volkhov and decided to make it, typically for his playing style, a stap forward towards the TOPS.

Troy Morrison - Osarius - 33 years old - Central Defender

Because one cannot have too many T. Morrisons on a pitch, it was a class act of the transfer committee to snap up the Osarian for a very reasonable price. The former Firewood FC prospect might have lost his pace across the years but showcased last year at Shanak that when used, his experience still does the job. If mixed with a young, quick snapper, it could deliver a very delicious and at least effective cocktail. A man who knows the drill.

Suzzane Navarro - Unified Sunrise Islands - 16 years old - Attacking Midfielder

Although the TOPS transfer officer was slightly disappointed that she was half-Lasernan instead of half-Laserman, the backstory of this pearl alone should warrant a draft. Having been kidnapped to Bisolandia, a Sunrisian mission on that land released her along with other victims. Afterwards, she was named by her new parents after the talented Daineri striker for good luck, but she hopes to make a name for herself as the youngest player in the TOPS.

Paracoilson - Capivara Group - 32 years old - Striker

Some loudmouths might be talking about couple sales, but it seems that Olhiderts is the royal provider of the competition by bringing in two strikers. Contrary to poacher Capitale, it seems that the hard-working Paracoilson adds something completely different. Having gone through enough seasons to know the limits of his capacities, few players manage to make the most out of it like this Capivaran. Don’t expect tons of goals, but a facilitator to raise the amount scored by the team.

Georgia Rodrigues - Super-Llamaland - 18 years old - Central Defender

As a youth prospect for Miklandian champions AC Bartolome, this full-back was a huge success for her strong stamina and instinct. Due to her positioning, she’s to be used versatile as a sweeper, right-back or defensive mid when necessary. Her huge potential hasn’t been completely polished in Chromatika where she spend a single year for Pûr before being kicked out. Could become one of the sensations of the competition, considering the potential available.

Eric Springer - Super-Llamaland - 32 years old - Wing Defender

Critics might claim that the most Springer has seen from the pitch across the last few seasons was the view from the bench of AFC Ruby. But knowing that this team could only be halted internationally by renowned names like Directus and Jungle Strike should give you an idea of the level Springer has been playing for. Eager for more time on the pitch, he should gave a few excellent years ahead of him and his UICA experience makes a marvellous asset to add.

Uni
Draft

One of the main prospects for the TOPS is to allow young, talented Transtopian footballers to discover the beautiful game at the highest level. Fundamental in doing so is successfully making the transition from the highest tiers of university football, where already for decades gifted youngsters can combine a quality education with a shot of eternal glory in physical education. To stimulate the teams to adopt these novice players and give them a chance to combat with the best of the nation, there will be a yearly Uni Draft.

In this Uni Draft, seventy-five players who performed last season as a senior in the UFC – the University Football Competition – or excelled in the MFCT – the Military Football Competition of Transtopia – were selected by a circle of trainers, journalists and TOPS staff members. These automatically include the winners of the following individual prices awarded at the end of the season: for the UFC the winners of the John Malarkey Trophy (MVP), Golden Glove, Iron Defender, Silver Midfielder, Platinum Striker, Golden Ball and the Assist King. For the MFCT, amongst others, those who received the Medals for Best Defending Player, Best Attacking Player and Best Scorer.

Every team is obligated to sign at least three players in draft rounds. In the inaugural year, the order agreed upon is the reverse one for the Inaugural Draft – in the future it will be the reverse of the final classification. The teams are allowed to sign more than three players as long as they don’t exceed their roster maximum size of twenty-five players (with three goalkeepers). In order to stimulate the long-term growth of players, squads are obligated to keep at least two players of each draft generation in the competition the next year and at least one in the third season. Of the remaining players, the TOPS selects twelve players to include in the mid-season Replacement Draft.

The UFC gathers across the country 143 of the major colleges and university. For decades already, it is known as the finest and best-organised competition with teams composed of youngsters who chose the Educational Path after their NTF – the tests every youngster takes at 16 to determine their future. The MFCT on the other hand unites the squads selected by the 62 Military Academies. Even if only a tenth of the youth opts for the Military Path at 16, it is no surprise that many of them combine physical capacities with an respectable level of dedication and organisational skills. The TOPS also wants to stimulate youngsters who opted for the Professional Path and enjoyed five years of traineeships in offices and companies and as such vowed to include a minimum number of U21s in the Inaugural Draft and later Replacement Drafts.

Ahead of the actual draft, we present the full list of potential players. The only formation centre to have four players in the draft is Ruggiero College, not accidentally the winners of the last UFC Trophy.

Inaugural
Draft

To start the competition, a massive group of no less than 140 players have been signed to partake in the so-called inaugural draft. This draft, in which the teams will be allowed to pick up players in a reverse order of the International & Uni Draft, will determine the team for the main group of players. Squads are allowed to continue selecting players, as long as they have no more than 25 players in their selection, do not exceed the limit of three goalkeepers and ensure that there are at least five players of 21 years old or younger in their selection.

Teams are not obliged to complete all roster spots but must employ at least twenty players, of whom two are goalkeepers. Of those players not selected, the TOPS selects eighteen players to include in the mid-season Replacement Draft. Be aware that a goalkeeper can be picked up quicker, more exactly as soon as a team has no more than one goalie left due to health reasons and/or disciplinary measures. Likewise, a field player can be chosen from the Replacement Draft pool at any time when a team would have only fifteen of those available in its selection.

All players acquired through this Draft, or any of the Drafts, can be exchanged for either different players, a Replacement Draft pick or a combination of both. Said exchange moment will take place after the three drafts which will go in the following order: International Draft; Inaugural Draft; Uni Draft.

NAVARRO BANNED FROM INTERNATIONAL DRAFT
The Sunrisian midfielder will be replaced by Cosneoltan international Jyrki Zima

HILLSFORD – As officials prepare for the inaugural edition of the TOPS, a nationwide football competition which has caught the attention of the population due to combining the influx of international and university players with an amalgam of the very best that grace the pitches of Transtopia, they were shocked by an announcement from the Department of Work. Apparently, an overzealous civil servant went with the finest of combs through the regulations which apply to the setup of a professional sports environment.

In his research, he based himself on the presumption that the noble grass is a work floor like another one. As a consequence, similar rules apply and one of those is that a youngster below the age of seventeen cannot be employed legally. Unfortunately, one of those contracted by the TOPS organisation is a young woman with an inspiring life story, Suzzane Navarro, who is only sixteen years old. According to our ardent governmental pal, this is a crime against humanity and with the support of the judicial arm of the law, Navarro was disallowed partaking in the TOPS.

Although protests were voiced by the management of the Sunrisian player, the magistrates could not be convinced, keeping Navarro off the final list for the International Draft. The organising commission of the TOPS has already promised that they will keep all contractual obligations towards Navarro. Additionally, she will be part of the half-season draft as it will take place days after her seventeenth birthday. In the meanwhile, the TOPS will ensure that Suzzane Navarro will be able to train in professional circumstances.

Despite the sharp deadline, the TOPS officers managed to ensure a more than viable replacement in Jyrki Zima, a player who performs for the Cosneoltan national team. As a midfielder, this 32-year old builds from his experience at the Dynum City Wanderers and should be a solid and experienced member of any of the eight teams. With Zima on the list, all eight teams will be able to start the season with three international players. Slightly overshadowed by the events around Navarro, the TOPS also announced the draw of teams for the International Draft, as included below.

Teams List:

Shuzen Silverblades
Hillsford Knights
Vardeaux Rapids
Aviéda Armadillos
Riviera Rovers
Braskov Bears
Markelsburg Marauders
Tirsha Tigers

International
Draft

It is not so easy to find a fitting location for an event that aspires both a business atmosphere and a festive look. Consequently, it must be said that the TOPS organisation did a stellar job to nominate the Old Concert Hall in Hillsford. Contrary to what its name would suggest, the place has been completely turned upside down a year or four ago and the current style is modern and slick enough to receive a delegation of well-suited team representatives, two dozen of football players in uncomfortable tuxedos and a press delegation visibly as unexperienced to it all as all others present.

Some staunch opponents of the drafting idea were eager to call the whole thing ‘a meat sale’ on social media and for that minority of critics, the idea of sending all foreign players one by one on the podium to present to the journalists might have backed their opinion. But for the vast group of followers, both those lucky to get entry and the tens of thousands streaming the event through a live connection, it was an exciting way to get the know the future stars of the competition.

What follows is a straightforward overview of the three rounds of the International Draft, with annotations from either a pundit or a club manager on the picks made.

FIRST ROUND

Shuzen Silverblades chooses… Hecate CHARING

“Some might evidently point to her age and say Shuzen has opted rather for a commercially interesting first choice in Charing… As beautiful as the pack of options is, a former A-League victor is a rare treasure. But she seems motivated and hungry to lead a team with her experience.” – Yuun Lee, The Tribune

Hillsford Knights chooses… Daniel BOWYER

“An excellent choice by the Knights who were eager to add a lethal striker to their skillset. From insiders, we’ve heard that Bowyer is aiming for the Golden Boot title although he’s not the kind of personality to voice that out too loud. Curious on the chemistry he’ll have with Lewis.” – Stan DeVille, The National Paper

Vardeaux Rapids chooses… Georgia RODRIGUES

“I am delighted to see Rodrigues will be joining our squad. Look, creating a squad is not just about trying to gather players who did this or that… It’s about fostering talent and she’s one of the greatest out there.” – Luk Caritoux, Vardeaux Rapids manager

Aviéda Armadillos chooses… Brianna JACOB

“Pretty conservative choice from the Armadillos who try to ensure that the axis of their line-up is made of concrete rapid in steel. With their gifted midfield, a reliable figure in the back was necessary. Good first pick for this squad.” – Gianpaolo Caruso, La Corriera

Riviera Rovers chooses… Taylor MORRISON

“We wanted the best and we get the best. A playmaker like Morrison will rock the competition. I don’t want to mount the pressure, but he has the package to win us the title.” – Manuele Sforza, Riviera Rovers

Braskov Bears chooses… Sana ASRORI

“If you ask us, a clear sign of what direction Piotr Malusz wants for this team. There are a few more offensive forces in the mix, but he opts for the one with the biggest over-my-dead-body mentality. Braskov won’t be here to make a lot of friends and Asrori fits that picture.” – Adam Krupp, Die Allgemeine

Markelsburg Marauders chooses… Jared JONES

“Considering the players still available, this is a decision that will leave a lot of analysts puzzled and put huge pressure on the man from Ethane. Can he handle the responsibility as it seems that the Marauders expect him to be a playmaker? Time will tell.” – Carl Schneider, Die Neue Zeitung

Tirsha Tigers chooses… Eric SPRINGER

“We are delighted to see that Eric was still available to sign. He was one of the players we had in our crosshairs for the opening round and that we can go on and build our defence on a player with his experience and skill, is marvellous. Welcome to the Tigers, Eric!” – Farouk Thomas, Tirsha Tigers VP

Tea in the company of a variation of distinctively branded cupcakes. Enjoyable light music.

SECOND ROUND

Shuzen Silverblades chooses… Troy MORRISON

“First they opt for a bunch of marquee players that are past their peak. Up next, they want some timeworn lady to lead the midfield and then they choose for an old Osarian to wrap it up in the back. Disappointedly. I seriously disapprove this alternative for a retirement home.” – Someone on the internet

Hillsford Knights chooses… Timothe BEVAN

“We have a vision with this team and Bevan matches that strategy. That’s what everyone says about their pick, you tell me? Possibly… But we really mean it. Look, we need people with a proper pass around Frederick Lewis in the middle of the pitch and Bevan has the right spirit.” – Evgen Bolland, Hillsford Knights manager

Vardeaux Rapids chooses… Rainer HILDEBRANDT

“We assume that Caritoux will aim to guide the talent of Rodrigues by Hildebrandt who has seen more of the Nepharim Premiership that a fan with four televisions and an endless supply of beer. If he’s motivated to play that role, this is a fine strategy. If.” – Jean-Valère Dury, Le Journal

Aviéda Armadillos chooses… Matthias DAWSELL

“Picking up a young player always holds a certain risk margin. But contrary to an older player, you can mould that risk, ensure that everything turns out fine. If I take a look at his growth curves and extrapolate on his DBC performances, Dawsell is a diamond in the mud.” - Luis Oliveira Bravo, manager Aviéda Armadillos

Riviera Rovers chooses… Ruben FRANSEN

“If there is one position in which this draft has a huge depth, it is in central defenders. From the long list, Borgarelli has maybe not chosen the best one but one with which he loves to work. Someone who is not afraid to throw in the knife when necessary, with a balls-to-the-wall mentality. He’ll need it to.” - Gianpaolo Caruso, La Corriera

Braskov Bears chooses… Aabid ABDELRAHMAN

“I don’t care for possession. Have you ever read a headline that said ‘team B scored more goals, but because A had more off the ball, we’re giving them points’? Never! It’s so simple, you see. You just bring the ball to the goal as quick as possible.” – Piotr Malusz, Braskov Bears manager

Markelsburg Marauders chooses… MARACATU

“Honestly, I couldn’t care less about reputations. That is just a bunch of la-die-da told by the press, no disrespect. Someone bites in your finger and the next day, you read in the newspaper that he tore off your arm and ate it. Give the kid a chance. What? Alliterations? What are you talking about?” – Edvald Schon, Markelsburg head coach

Tirsha Tigers chooses… Mikke LOVENKRANDS

“Have you already heard of the concept of a steal? That’s at least how I would call it when a major talent gets overlooked by all the squads higher up the draft lists and ends up in our Tirsha. They will be regretting letting him go in Copenbrok Klub, trust me.” – Faima Al Azna, The Royal

Coffee for those who felt left out previously. With a teaspoon of equally light yet different music.

THIRD ROUND

Shuzen Silverblades chooses… Yemi AKINTOLA

“It is always difficult to give a key position such as attacking midfield to a young, unexperienced whippersnapper and it will be no different for Akintola. A lot will depend on his ambitions: is he willing to act as the understudy to someone from the main draft or will he want to carry the team?” – Yuun Lee, The Tribune

Hillsford Knights chooses… Stepan HESKOVIZENAKO

“I’m buying a shirt with that on the back and everyone who can’t pronounce it, should give a beer. How about that? Welcome to the club, Hesko!” – An anonymous fan on the internet

Vardeaux Rapids chooses… CAPITALE

“Interesting choice to opt for this player as back-up for Danje. I would be surprised to see this guy managing to keep ‘the Danger’ out of the starting line-up but these international drafts do show a long-term commitment from the Rapids and a willingness to look further than just this season.” – Pierre Reza, La Gazette

Aviéda Armadillos chooses… Marcelo BOATENG

“A firm decision by the Armadillos. A lot will depend for this guy on how he clicks with Bellió. In theory, one cannot surpass Carretero when it comes to the striker position for Aviéda but not everyone is convinced they’ll click. That could open opportunities for the Semar, I believe.” – Joao Martins, Sport!

Riviera Rovers chooses… Renat DEL PIERRE

“So far, the main thing that stuck from their choices was that they looked solid. That’s good, of course, but sometimes you want more. Picking up Del Pierre should give them a spark of inspiration but the question is if Del Pierre can deliver it. A lot is being asked of a 21-year old,” – Alfredo Giannelli, La Corriera

Braskov Bears chooses… Jyrki ZIMA

“We’ve got relatively little intel on him but from a first glance, he matches their project. The Bears will be brutal and if Zima can physically cope with that, he’ll be a fan favourite. Positioned next to Gavrilov he should form the engine of this squad. Powerful.” – Yuri Shimkov, Gazet

Markelsburg Marauders chooses… PARACOILSON

“So, having a quick first look through it all, literally every other team already had a striker and some even had two. And then we bring in a guy who’s old enough to be my dad if he had a childhood in which he happened to be sick when missing the sex ed class. Seriously?” – Unknown Markelsburg fan

Tirsha Tigers chooses… KING

“It is funny how sometimes, without choosing, you end up exactly with what you need. A lot is expected of Mikel Lovenkrands and with this veteran Daineri, he gets someone who can guide him and take on some of the dirty work. Not the most elegant of defenders but for a final pick… Not bad.” – Faima Al Azna, The Royal

Inaugural
Draft

Having to cram a hundred and forty potential players and their entourage in the Old Theatre, let alone the representatives of the squad and a bunch of trigger-happy press photographers, would have been sheer madness so the festival transferred to the Marshall Hall, a business centre just out of town and a fitting location for carnivals, car sales shows, cardinal inaugurations and everything car related. Unfortunately, the vast hall has a lousy atmosphere and bring excitement to the masses at the same rate as an open abattoir.

Nonetheless, it did the job in assigning the players to their new employers. Let’s walk you through the choices made, along with our home analyst, Vridrich Lammerschon.

”It’s difficult to predict who the teams will choose from such a large pool of but judging from the contacts I’ve had with some team managers, they might be incited to pick out the more locally based footballers. Of course it holds a practical element, as language and such should make it easier for those guys to fit in their line-up. But it’s also the result of scouting limits – they know the regional competitions better than those far away. Yet, I hope that some teams will have the guts to grab hold of unknown guys.”

FIRST ROUND

Tirsha Tigers chooses… Simon SCHEFFEL

“Excellent choice and a completely different type than their left winger Pasha Ghanuk. A right midfielder that can be employed in the centre of the pitch as well, excellent volume and stamina despite being only 22 years old. Should work a little more on his stats, but has the whole package.”

Markelsburg Marauders chooses… Théo MOULIN

“The Vardeaux management, according to the rumours, were already disgruntled that Moulin was not assigned to them as a marquee player and now Markelsburg picks him up just in front of their noses. Hashtag drama much. Nonetheless, an excellent decision by Edvald Schon, a major talent.”

Braskov Bears chooses… Mateusz FLOREK

“Judging from the victory signals Piotr Malusz is making to the crowd, it seems he feels like he picked up the jackpot. Not fully unfair, Florek is a great midfielder who could rock the scene but one could wonder if a younger player wouldn’t be a better pick? Nonetheless, it will be a brutal midfield. No hostages taken, that’s for sure.”

Riviera Rovers chooses… Giulio PONTE

“There we have it, the central duo of defenders for the Rovers is known. Ponte and Fransen, sounds good but should work out fine as well. Pretty modern type of defender, Ponte, can pass a ball around but hasn’t given in when it comes to tackling or heading. And still room for improvement at 22!”

Aviéda Armadillos chooses… Jairo ZUBIRA

“I have to admit that I’m not surprised by this choice. They’re having a royal couple in the heart of their defence with Zubira and Rodrigues and that will be crucial to turn their title ambitions into actual fact. Someone who will not be afraid to lead the back line vocally as well. Very vocally.”

Vardeaux Rapids chooses… David MORGAN

“It must be said that the Rapids clearly have chosen for potential over pure quality, although a left back such as Morgan does represent both. Delightful player that never hesitates to do the wing. His cross pass to Danjé could wreak havoc and he’s a source of joy for the press as well. Says it as he thinks. Or doesn’t think.”

Hillsford Knights chooses… Samuel THOMSON

“They were one of the teams where it still was empty between the posts, so no major surprise. Has become a bit of a cult figure amongst the fans due to his often bizarre pick of colourful jerseys. I struggle to see his notorious orange-purple combo mix in with the Hillsford colours, but oh well.”

Shuzen Silverblades chooses… Hamza EL AGAMY

“Some people might start yacking about Alavoine but the truth is that Shuzen dives into this draft headfirst by picking up the best player under twenty. El Agamy is a delight for the eye, ridiculously strong at eighteen and quick at a different level for a striker. Apparently they want him for a starter as well, gutsy choice!”

Quite a few gasps when El Agamy was chosen and in a corner of the room, Tirsha manager Yusuf Hasma started shouting at his Shuzen colleagues.

SECOND ROUND

Tirsha Tigers chooses… Adnan HAMMAL

“I think that the Tigers are starting to like their first-pick position more than ever. Got a chance to score an attacking midfielder with huge talent who lives just two miles away from their stadium but… How will he and the nine years old Ahmed Karan get along? Potential clashes around the corner.”

Markelsburg Marauders chooses… Matteo BARLOCCO

“Contrary to a few others, it seems that the Marauders don’t give a rat’s ass about the heritage a player holds and decide to go with quality in the first place. Barlocco is a pair of safe hands, will never really do the spectacular stuff but I can’t remember a real mistake of his in years. Safe like a Swiss bank.”

Braskov Bears chooses… Mikhail DMOWSKI

“Konalenko used to coach this guy when still being in charge of Wronski University and hasn’t forgotten about him. Dmowski might not catch the eye with his style but is an impressive force of nature. Wing defenders will be a sparse good in this draft, so it’s no major surprise they sign him.”

Riviera Rovers chooses… Gianluca ZACCAGNO

“Yes, he’s a local but this still is a bizarre choice. With Ortolano, they’ve got exactly the same type already in their selection and someone such as Zaccagno is not happy to play the second violin. Prepare for a wrestle party of a monumental size for a starting spot, but I’m not favouring Zaccagno’s chances.”

Aviéda Armadillos chooses… Guillermo TOMAS

“It is difficult to argue with a choice for a 22-year old who has the potential to become more than a good striker. But I would have preferred seeing the Armadillos take care of their problems on the wing back rather than bringing in another good attacker. If he can rack up playing minutes, one of the guys to follow.”

Vardeaux Rapids chooses… George DOZZING

“It’s the Rapids who dare to take in Dozzing! A child prodigy, about three years ago touted as the best football player in the country but since a bit on the down low. Nonetheless only 28 and with his talent, you should proliferate in a good team but how will he cooperate with Duval? Difficult road chosen by Caritoux.”

Hillsford Knights chooses… Sasa CHUKALOV

“We often chuckle on the communication style of Evgen Bolland but when he claimed that there was a plan behind every addition, we have to start believing him. Chukalov will not score a cartload of goals, but a good team can’t live solely on builders. It shows balls to take your second round pick on a destructor – but a very reliable one.”

Shuzen Silverblades chooses… Ronael JANVIER

“A man that is not always admired by his supporters as he’s prone to gaffes. But a beautiful athlete with a grand skillset on the left back position. Does grab a silly yellow once too often, for stuff such as shooting the ball in the stands after the signal, which mars the reputation of an otherwise gracious defender.”

The fire alarm goes. Bizarre during a hiring moment.

THIRD ROUND

Tirsha Tigers chooses… Asier GARCIA

“Waste of a marvellous third round draft, if you ask me. Don’t get me wrong, Garcia can knock in a goal or two but if they wanted an assurance on goals they should have brought in someone else. An attacker will be the position where the Tigers are fragile, if you ask me. And you did, after all.”

Markelsburg Marauders chooses… Egor HRISTOV

“Apparently overlooked so far due to his age, this 30-year old can be of an important impact in the kind of football Schone has in mind. Reliable man who covers a lot of ground, rarely caught out of position. The Marauders will not have a sexy team but they shape up rather strong.”

Braskov Bears chooses… Nikola IGNATOV

“A bizarre choice that is borderline racist, if you ask me. The urge from Malusz to draft local players has gone too far if you decide to rely on a 19-year old goalie. Might break the career of a promising goalkeeper who needs a year or two as understudy at this level before being really quality.”

Riviera Rovers chooses… Francesco VANNUCCI

“A fan favourite without stepping a foot on the pitch – that’s what online videos of dribbles do with you. Made quite a name for himself in the street football scene and Riviera hopes to capitalise on that on the grassy pitch. Has a marvellous touch which makes you fall in love with the game.”

Aviéda Armadillos chooses… Miguel VELEZ

“One of those small passing wizards that seem to grow on the trees in that region. Amongst them, he stands out proverbially due to his speed in execution – literally you’ld miss him with his metre sixty-one. Curious if he can still stand strong when the game becomes raw and rough.”

Vardeaux Rapids chooses… Todd KAVANAGH

“Third player with an Anglosaxon heritage in a row, do we spot a strategy here? At 29, we can’t sell him as a player with potential anymore but I’m not sad over this decision. He’s often in the shadows of more reputed colleagues but he’s got noteworthy reflexes on the line.”

Hillsford Knights chooses… Ricardo ANSOTEGUI

“How on earth is it possible that no one has chosen Ansotegui before? From my point of view, he is as promising as Guilio Ponte and a year younger. With him next to Hamsani, the Knights start to shape up as a title candidate. But from a fashion point of view: get rid of the diadem. Seriously.”

Shuzen Silverblades chooses… Jacopo LANCINI

“Did not see that one coming at all. There is a lot more available on the market before you have to resort to a left midfielder who is… Certainly not shabby but a bit mediocre. Very unfortunate choice, according to my two cents. Then again, I’m a misanthrope as well, so who bothers?”

When a visibly bored key sponsor asks if it’s going to take long “cause that dinner ain’t going to eat itself”, the officials promise to speed it up a little.

Round 4 – Nabil Al Kasbi
Round 5 – Dmitri Ziljkic
Round 6 – Ayoub Rayan
Round 7 – Iliasse Tabati
Round 8 – André Leon
Round 9 – Scott McKenzie
Round 10 – Anas Atef
Round 11 – Abdulwahab Fekri
Round 12 – Mutaz Khadraoui
Round 13 – Steven Kinsella
Round 14 – Youssef Yaloub

“I’m a bit disappointed when it comes to defensive depth and a bit more ‘local veterans’ than I had hoped, considering Tabati.”

Round 4 – Fabio Lozano
Round 5 – Isaac Sacramento
Round 6 – Laurent Paquiez
Round 7 – Jonny Camara
Round 8 – Erhan Taffertshofer
Round 9 – Jannick Pflucke
Round 10 – Mauro Rosso
Round 11 – Felix Glissner
Round 12 – Pavel Cichocki
Round 13 – Mehdi Chakroun
Round 14 – Mart Platter

“One of the more balanced squads we’ve seen around and not incidentally one of the teams that had a good scouting, choosing players from everywhere in the nation.”

Round 4 – Sebastian Sukhoruchenko
Round 5 – Petko Alibekov
Round 6 – Sergey Skopintsev
Round 7 – Diego Gatto
Round 8 – Ruslan Macierzynski
Round 9 – Karol Zivkovic
Round 10 – Danil Dimitrov
Round 11 – Georgi Godryushenko
Round 12 – Nazal Vartanyan
Round 13 – Uros Golubev
Round 14 – Ilya Karanov
Round 15 – Julius Rietfeld
Round 16 – Valentin Lefevre

“With Alibekov and Sukho, they have a few very exciting young talents but I’m missing out on players who can turn the game around with a bit of magic.”

Round 4 – Filippo Bandini
Round 5 – Rui Fernandes
Round 6 – Fa Yoon
Round 7 – Simone Felicioli
Round 8 – Mirko Tulissi
Round 9 – Daniel Konigsmann
Round 10 – Dominiek Yildirim
Round 11 – Federico Ganna
Round 12 – Taoufiq Walid
Round 13 – Guido Scaccarozzi
Round 14 – Andrew Holt
Round 15 – Chang-Jong Hwang

“They’ve taken quite a few good decisions with young lads like Ganna, Yildirim and Felicioli who can mature into reliable players, but I’m missing a solid right back.”

Round 4 – Michael Zetter
Round 5 – Ivan Estrada
Round 6 – Aleksandr Mogulkin
Round 7 – Heriberto Casas
Round 8 – Mikel Paredes
Round 9 – Hugo Clemente
Round 10 – Sergio Pina
Round 11 – Dani Llorca
Round 12 – Cameron Thorpe
Round 13 – Ben Townsend

“That you can add raw diamonds like Pina, Casas and the amazing Michael Zetter is fantastic but that you add half a dozen oldies as well shows little confidence.”

Round 4 – Quentin Alavoine
Round 5 – Julien Benet
Round 6 – Brice Pellenard
Round 7 – Nick Hall
Round 8 – Ronan McLeod
Round 9 – Jeremy Mendy
Round 10 – Adam Byrne
Round 11 – Roger Teixeira
Round 12 – Yanis Banga
Round 13 – Alois Koné
Round 14 – Vincent Bernaudeau

“It seems a deliberate choice of the Rapids to make a mixed Francophone-Anglosaxon dressing room – no wonder that gaffer Caritoux was thrilled with the result.”

Round 4 – Jerome Turner
Round 5 – Joe Chambers
Round 6 – Garry Barrett
Round 7 – Kurtis Reid-Beckett
Round 8 – Vittorio Petilli
Round 9 – Rafa Brandao
Round 10 – Thibault Peyretti
Round 11 – Jimmy Daniels
Round 12 – Nathan Gunn
Round 13 – Tianzi Tomita
Round 14 – Zack Boyd
Round 15 – Karim Soares
Round 16 – Charlie Black

“They struggled a bit to make a balanced formation, I’m afraid and a few signings that seem more about bringing in fans than goals. Depth might not be their greatest strength.”

Round 4 – Kazuma Jia
Round 5 – Zhenji Yamaguchi
Round 6 – Paul O’Sullivan
Round 7 – Iain Potts
Round 8 – Christiano Commesso
Round 9 – Fumitaka Matsubara
Round 10 – Robert Krause
Round 11 – Alvaro Gomes
Round 12 – Florian Niemeyer
Round 13 – Takuma Miyuki
Round 14 – Chul-Ho Wang

“A very diverse bunch but it must be said that all positions seem very well covered. They refused to pick up a second goalkeeper, showing who their first Uni draft pick will be.”

Alberto Monteiro
Anthony Prévot
Daniele Di Mante
Gennaro Caluppo
Inigo Afonso
Kevin VanWild
Luca Fornaciaro
Lukas Wulle
Manu Ortiz
Matt Cox
Mofta Ghazali
Patrick Weim
Radoslaw Sheytanov
Rikiya Son
Sean Cole
Seung-Won Lu
Vladislav Mashnev

“A group of mainly older players who can be called up when the injuries take their toll on a certain team. Goalies Afonso and Weim might get a call and I’m quite surprised that a lethal striker such as Matt Cox was overlooked by all teams.”

Uni
Draft

Contrary to the two others drafts, the lack of fanfare and display at the Uni Draft, performed in a quiet meeting office of the TOPS building with players and managers piled up in the hallways, is quite a bucket of cold water to the face. Unfortunately and unfairly, it must be said, as the public interest is quite high. After all were the clashes between academies and universities the only games that had a nationwide stretch and the names of the very best players are known across the corners of the country. Take it away, Vridrich!

“Everyone has been able to follow the title runs of Ruggiero College and Grenadiers Academy through the assembled press, so faulty scouting cannot be cited as the excuse for regionally inspired picks. However, a few universities have already set up negotiations about so-called ‘knowledge exchanges’ with clubs – granting them access to their nearly professional background for all scientific data behind the great game. As such, expect a politically inspired pick here and there.”

FIRST ROUND

Shuzen Silverblades chooses… Nathaniel WOOD

“Interesting decision by the Silverblades who give Wood a very nice perspective as second goalie behind Andy Park. The Golden Glove of last season UTFC is amazing in the box and has the authority one needs to coach a back four at professional level. This Starclough Uni man could put in some extra work on his line, however and exactly that can be learned with Park.”

Hillsford Knights chooses… Soufiane HAZEB

“A huge collection of field players, yet the Knights opt for a seemingly lofty striker. Hazeb had his education at the renowned Sija Academy and developed into a prolific attacker who eventually, nineteen goals later, brought in the topscorer title. Seemingly the only alternative to Bowyer and Turner, offers something different to those two so he should get some time on the pitch.”

Vardeaux Rapids chooses… Edgaras ARKAUSKAS

“Spoltala University had a huge season last year, making it into the finals. Solid and reliable, Arkauskas had quite a part in that and the trophy of Iron Defender was the icing on that cake. Will have tough competition in Hildebrandt and Rodrigues for the starting spots, but should learn a lot this year. Very calm on and off the ball, that shows potential.”

Aviéda Armadillos chooses… Carles VILLADON

“Some will claim it is bizarre that the winner of the last John Malarkey Trophy didn’t pop out of first or second pick but the opinions on Villadon are mixed. He’s master in his genre, the short, technically apt midfielder who gave a ton of assist to his teammates of Ruggiero to lead them to the title. But will he stand a chance in the physical football at pro level or falter?”

Riviera Rovers chooses… Claudio CHIAMPETTI

“The Rovers did not just choose for a local boy, it could be stated that this classy attacking midfield was the best academy football had to offer. Some say he’s a bit too slow but he can direct the action with class and his pivotal role in Cinzia Academy displayed him on the verge of pro football. He and Semar Del Pierre should challenge one another for a starting spot – two young guns.”

Braskov Bears chooses… Piotr BOGRANOWSKI

“A decision that brings in mixed feelings. First of all, if you want to stand with your regionally centred strategy, it is but normal to select this excellent attacking midfielder – strong yet subtle – from the masses. But with Rashvili, Florek, Gavrilov, Abdelrahman, Zima, Gatto and Skopintsev, the wealth of the Bears in midfield could push a nugget like Bogranowski more to the bench then should.”

Markelsburg Marauders chooses… Jesper FINK

“The Marauders continue their policy of looking for a balanced squad first. Forming an alternative for the very offensive Sacramento, this generally hardworking midfielder can either be employed in the middle of the pitch or more near the touchline. Not the biggest talent of his generation for sure, but someone who I would be surprised of if he can’t bring the sacrifices necessary.”

Tirsha Tigers chooses… Hussain AL-WALID

“A very ambitious young man who stated that he wanted to challenge for the title of top scorer. It must be said that, considering the lack of roster depth in attack, he will get his shot up front with the Tigers and although he seems a little slow, this fellow rings the emergency bell of the opponents every time he gets the leather in the box. A poacher, possibly, of the most efficient kind.”

And so it goes on, as the dreams of a few dozen of youngsters get crushed under the simple law that 75 players cannot all get a minimum contract when there’s few open spots left.

Round 2 – Pak Gyok-gwang
Round 3 – Jack Howes
Round 4 – Hang Kim
Round 5 – Eijchi Kuzimoto

“Of course it is a partial attempt to bring in some uni football fans, but on the other hands, being the only one to land 5 draftees is a noteworthy youth effort from the Silverblades.”

Round 2 – Francis Wondell
Round 3 – Johan Nilsen

“Keep an eye out for Wondell, a guy with a story. Initially on his way to crash and burn his scholar career, he got rehabilitated at the notoriously strict Grenadiers Academy and came out awarded, both in athletics and grades.”

Round 2 – Thorst McLaif
Round 3 – Nacer Valdive
Round 4 – Giuseppe Zonzi

“Much to our surprise, Zonzi only got picked up in the last instance. There was a lot of enthusiasm for this prolific striker but he already build up a very notorious record off the pitch – quite a gamble of the otherwise calm Caritoux.”

Round 2 – Paulo Cutures
Round 3 – Joaquin Barva
Round 4 – Aurelio Fontini

“Oliveira claimed in his usual style that the latter two were ‘statistical evidences’ due to respectively their tackle rate and passing average. Good study objects to see whether his scientific approach pays off or the gut feeling, which inspired no one else to draft them, still rules the waves.”

Round 2 – Daniele Di Mente
Round 3 – Stefano Zarelli

“That they chose a young player each from three of the most reputed universities in their region was called ‘accidental’ by the gaffer, but be aware that these draftees will have to defend their old colours in the first place.”

Round 2 – Sergej Porsanov
Round 3 – Sebastian Guza

“A very interesting pick in Guza, one of the three players of the victorious Ruggiero College to make the cut. A bit forgotten in the praise for some of his colleagues on the team, but has the willpower to go far.”

Round 2 – Theodor Hamsl
Round 3 – Stefan Hollschmann
Round 4 – Per Vanderschut

“Quite a nice trio despite being so far back in the draft list. Some people with a good eye for it are very enthused about Hollschmann, a modern player who can act on the wing and in the point of attack, a terrible combination to defend.”

Round 2 – Bahar Casik
Round 3 – Aziz Muwadi
Round 4 – Archibald Smith II

“The Al-Ghamsa University was the first in nearly two decades from the southeastern region to break into the Final Four and got rewarded by seeing their two best elements, Al-Walid and the mature Casik, sign up with the Tigers.”

Dean O’Murphy
Eberardo Pavesi
Fallah Rahmoudi
Francis Ramoisier
Fung Yamoto
Heiko Grunsmann
Maciej Laas
Ming Won-Sae
Romain Bardeaux
Sergio Maceda
Sterling Carr
Vadim Rechsov
Younes Pawké

“Uncertain times ahead for these boys who have to hope that a spot opens up along the road – due to injuries or underperformance.”
