Maybe "embarrassed" wasn't the best word. They're more a guilty pleasure than anything. I certainly don't hate them, but nowadays if I'm going to listen to them it'll be more for the meme than anything else.

"Meme"? Soldiers of the Wasteland is one of the greatest songs ever made, boi.

So, anyone else given Týr's new album a listen yet? Giving it a first listen, and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it so far. :meh:

On an opposite note, I'm actually digging the new In Flames a lot. Magic of low expectations, I guess?

I had no idea Amaranthe covered Army of the Night by Powerwolf.

I dare say, it's at least just as good as the original - if not even better. It helps that I absolutely love Elize's voice in just about everything she does.

"Falling Moon" by Onirism came up in my recommendations and I'm digging the synthy-melodic-black-with-ambient-touches thing.

I mostly get what the algorithms decide to serve up for me, do any of you guys with actual musical knowledge know of anything similar?

Not exactly the same, but here are two albums I've been listening to a lot lately that fall in the melodic-black-metal-with-classy-flourishes camp.

A 90s gem that probably influenced Onirism with its majestic synths

A 2014 concept album about the apocalyptic destruction and rebirth of Earth, with more of the ambient/atmospheric bits you might be looking for

One of the best melodic black metal albums out there.

Good enough but not something I'd go for when thinking about "atmospheric/ambient metal". One of those bands that exist by hundreds.

Cheers for this. The recommendation algorithms must be doing an okay job because I actually got both of these a while back and still give them occasional listens.

In other recent discoveries, I'm currently listening to "Beneath the Shadow it Casts" by The Chemical Mind, which seems to be some decent progressive black on first listen though I'm not sure yet whether it hangs together well enough as a whole album to get a permanent place on the old ipod.

Personally I think that Slayer's more recent offering Repentless is pretty neat. It reminds me of Seasons In The Abyss, which is never a bad thing.

Speaking of 21st century Slayer, World Painted Blood might be my favorite album they've done since Reign itself.

Repentless is pretty good too.
