We have all heard of the (OoC) juxtaposition of Russia and Germany, identifying themselves by the epithets of motherland and fatherland respectively. Britain is represented by Britannia, who is female. The United States can be summed up as the personification of Liberty, who is also female. The Latin word for one's home state is patria, which is feminine. In the East, China eschews immediate parents for the deceased, calling herself the ancestral land, and a similar practice is seen in Japan and Korea, for historical reasons. Many years ago, the standard pronoun to use in lieu of a nation is always she, after the Latin word's grammatical gender, though this practice has now somewhat been deprecated.
