Welcome to the Sveavägen Railway!
OOC/Sign-Ups

"The five-forty to Öresundsbron will depart momentarily. All passengers please board the train."

Introduction

Welcome, traveller, to the Sveavägen Railway. Why you're here is irrelevant to me. Maybe you're just off to visit some relatives in Denmark, and didn't manage to reserve a seat on a boat. Maybe you're a soldier deployed to reinforce the Öresund Base. Whatever. I don't care. I'm just here to... what's that? You don't speak Icelandic? Well, maybe you should've paid more attention in school... I'm tired, okay? I'm only giving this speech once. Ask someone else for a translation.

Anyways, as I was saying, I'm just here to see to your safety. This railway runs through hundreds of kilometres of un-cleansed silent lands, and things do get... somewhat rough at times. Don't worry, though. So far we've never had an actual accident. As you can see, sleeping bunks have been provided for you, fitted with safety straps. Dinner will be provided momentarily, and when you're tired, be sure to strap yourself to your bed before going to sleep. We should be arriving by the time you wake up.

I need to go make myself available in the engine room now, so please make yourself comfortable and... uh... welcome to the railway, I guess?

Setting

The Map of the World

This role-play will be set in the universe of the web-comic Stand Still, Stay Silent, by Minna Sundberg.

Seventy-one years have passed since a rash pandemic ravaged the globe, leaving nothing but a few survivors barely maintaining a civilisation on the northern fringes of the European Continent. But all is not yet lost. Civilisation may have been radically abbreviated, but it lives on, aided by its newly-discovered mages and the great reserve of modern technology that is Iceland, reclaiming lands from the beasts and trolls that now inhabit it, one piece after another.

As the second most-populous and second-most advanced nation in the Known World, Sweden has been the most aggressive in its expansions, cleansing through flame increasingly larger rings of land around its capital, Mora. Now, they are pleased to announce the conclusion of their latest project - the most ambitious undertaking of their nation since the end of the Old World. A railroad, running through hundreds of kilometres of thick forests overrun with horrifying creatures, between their capital of Mora and the Danish base at the tip of the Øresund Bridge.

Celebrations and fanfare adore this ambitious undertaking. Critics criticise the railway as a huge waste of maintenance money. Tourists flock to see for themselves.

You are a passenger in the third train to Öresundsbron, and something is about to go very, very wrong...

Rules

The rules are simple. Here they are, in no particular order:

1. Naturally, as with all RPs, you must accept decisions made by the original poster (that's me) without challenging his authority. Although you may question my decision with facts you believe I have failed to consider, my final decision is my final decision.

2. I will accept a maximum of two characters per role-player, although I will be permitting a third for those people I know to be capable role-players.

3. Fun is absolutely mandatory.

4. If you are leaving this role-play, temporarily or permanently, please inform the OP so that we can plan for your absence.

5. If you have any questions about this setting, please feel free to ask. I can't guarantee that I can answer them, but there's nothing wrong with trying.

6. No, I'm actually serious. Don't guess - ask.

7. Please do not kill off other player characters - players get cranky when you do that - without their or my permission.

8. I reserve the right to change this set of rules at any time and at my sole discretion.

9. Stay within some bound of realism. I know this is an insane setting with weird monsters and functional magic, but there are still bounds.

:) Yaaaay!

Just be aware that you don't need to read the web-comic to participate in this role-play. I'll be around to (try and) answer any questions that you can't find the answers to in the short setting description given in the original post.

Character Application

Name: Sven Johansson
Age: 52
Nationality: Swedish
Location of Current Residence: Mora
Reason for Boarding the Sveavägen Railway: As the conductor of the train, of course Sven is on it.
Biography: Born to two farmers in Östersund, Sweden, Year 19, Sven was unusually well-educated for a person born in that period of history, having almost finished his secondary education before dropping out to work on the newly recreated Swedish railroads. As one of the first few employees of the Swedish railroads after the end of the Old World, Sven was rapidly promoted, eventually leading to his nomination as the conductor of the new Sveavägen Railway when it finally opened. However, his long-time dedication to the railroads meant that he had no real life at home, having befriended only his fellow railroad workers. Consequently, at the advanced age of 52, Sven is still unmarried. Asides from his work on the railroads, Sven's other notable achievements include his book The Tales of Old Mora, in which he recounts some stories he has heard from his parents, and the new Mora quarantine-and-decontamination station, which he partially designed.
Items in Baggage: Paperwork and field manuals. Some blank sheets of paper and a well-made pen. An Old World map of Southern Sweden.
Appearance: Tall in stature. Is fairly heavy for a person of his age and background, but his conductor's overcoat hides the fact fairly well. Grey hair and ageing blue eyes.
Language Capabilities: Fluent in Swedish and Icelandic.
Cat: None, except those provided by the train.
Personality: Surprisingly shy in personal affairs for someone with such a loud voice, but is both confident and assertive in his work.
Other Information: Dedicated to his work, but misses the Mora - Skutskär route he formerly used to run, and is not looking forward to his retirement in three more years.

What are the limits of magic for characters?

Not much is known about Icelandic magic in the SSSS setting, but for this RP, I'm going to assume it's developed up to a similar standard as Finnish magic.

That is to say, spells are fairly simple to cast (if you have the innate ability to do so, that is) and they are very useful in combat settings, but are also extraordinarily tiring.

You may also find this comic page quite useful.

Oh, and be aware if you apply as a character with a mage background, you cannot be Danish/Swedish, because Danes/Swedes in the SSSS setting refuse to believe in it.

I have few questions.

1. Is it possible for the character to don't have magic?
2. What kind of characters you need, Plzen?

1. Yes. Magic is a rare sort of thing. Unless your character is from Finland, chances are he or she will possess absolutely no magical ability whatsoever.

2. Honestly, at this point I don't care very much. As long as it's reasonable within the setting, I'll be fine with it. A tourist trying out the new railroad for the first time, Danish soldier returning to work at the Øresund Base, somebody who needs to get to Denmark quickly and forgot to book a seat on a boat, etc. etc...

Basically the kind of people you would see on any new railroad anytime in history anywhere in the world.

How about Faroese? I imagine Denmark little colony is closer to Iceland, after the motherland almost dead to only survive at Bornholm for seventy-one years.

I would be fine with that, but do be aware that the inhabited part of the Faroe Islands has only been reclaimed from the beasts and trolls recently, and the other half are still overrun with beasts and trolls. If your character is going to be from the Faroe Islands, it's very likely that your character is a recent immigrant.

Most surviving Faroese after the rash pandemic moved out to Iceland/Norway where it was safer, and their descendants don't particularly want to come back.

Got it, I'll try to make an app soon. It's gonna be tough though, I have little to no knowledge of Scandinavia culture other than from SatW webcomic, and I have never read SSSS webcomic before.

Seems interesting.

Especially interested in the elements of Nordic (Germanic, to be a bit more inclusive) mythology hinted at in the brief synopsis on the webcomic's index page. Reminds me, I should get more books on that area of mythology, since I haven't got many, compared to my books on other mythologies, though I do have some books on Runes and Runic magic. Anyway...

The SSSS setting is partially inspired by Norse and Finnic mythologies, sure, but I'm sorry to say that it has little relations with either. Both Norse and Finnic mages/magic are a real thing in the setting, but that's about it. The "trolls" are just heavily-mutated humans, etc...

Although there sure are a heck of a lot of speculation in the web-comic fan community about whether the rash pandemic was driven by magic or whether it was just a simple zombie-style disease.

Mora is my hometown! And Älvdalen is practically my hometown too! Haven't read the comic, will check it out, and than app. I had been thinking about doing a post-apocalyptic rp myself, but based in Germany, but this suits me even better! Since I already know most of the real background info... :p

Saami people, how are they with magic? Or are they mainly in the northern Nordics?

Think I'll do either a Saami or a Swede, or both.

The Sami aren't mentioned in the comic (yet), but presumably they follow some variant of the Finnish mage tradition.

But you'll have to do some really good story-writing to apply as a Sami. Finland, the Sami's cultural cousin, has over ten thousand survivors in SSSS, yet they're so disconnected from the rest of the Known World that there's a maximum of one passenger ship between Sweden and Finland a week, if even that. They're generally considered poorer and less developed than the Scandinavians. The Sami, with their tiny tiny surviving population, are even less likely to have a reason to ride a train in the next country over.

Out of curiosity, how did the Irish do in the whole apocalypse world-ending pandemic thing? And would Ireland be any part inhabited?
