What type of secret societies (if any) exist in your nation? Are they the power behind the throne or are they slightly dusty anachronistic characters? Perhaps something else?

There are a number of 'semi' secret societies, the more well known of which include the Culvarians, The Gilded Spoon' and 'The Stein' in Nova Sodor but these days they really are little more than a collection of old boys clubs who help each other out in what little ways their decline power allows.

It is rumored that ancient secret societies such as the Illuminati, the Freemasonry, and the Triad have been secretly setting up all major events in the Empire since its establishment in 2025 in order to support the New World Order.

There are some conspiracy theories around regarding secret societies plotting to control the government or destroy the country or turn over the government to the Americans/Russians/British or dominate the national economy and take the nation's wealth for themselves or whatever; those theories, and the existence of the alleged societies, remain unconfirmed and mostly regarded as untrue.

There's a few secretive business groups. While not strictly legal, it's not against the laws to plan price ranges together. As long it doesn't damage the economy to a considerable amount, most under the table practices are fine.

Its main function seems to be the Annual Picnic which is held several times a year (since ducks don't have calendars). Although it is believed by many to be a white-duck-supremacist organization, most of its members seem to be brown ducks.

Secret societies have been criminalized within the Democratic Federation of Slavia/Slavic Democratic Federation, due to hiding potentially valuable information from specific persons of interest and/or the government.

However, there is speculation of both Orthodox Christian secret societies in the Balkans, and pagan secret societies near Finnish Scandinavia and in the Baltic areas. Both are being investigated, but the Slavic government has decreed paganism more of a threat.

There's a group of whacos going around saying there is some kind of secret society that controls the world from a mythical city called "Herrebrugh Prime", and that the world doesn't actually exist, merely being some internet game.

Other than the Rosicrucians, Freemasons, Opus Dei and others, there are 3 main groups.

The Rajjah-Khalidan are an ultra-scientific conservative group based in Zahedan. They base their theology on the founder (Dayeu Khammasoulas) and his writings. They are devoted to "science of all beings and the knowledge of the Higher....... being and his wills of...... scientific foundation and truth, and the Ultimate Knowledge." The Ultimate Knowledge, they say, is a state where "one possesses to access all things." Dayeu was called the Great Rajjah, the only prince of the Higher Being.

The Kamtiks are devoted to freedom of everything. They despise the Rajjah-Khalidan. Scientists around and in Baldapehlva are proposed to be Kamtiks. They are ultra-left. According to their books, they are to "know all, free all and tell all." They have a youth sector called the Occultatum Liberis.

The Imijran are just a group of immigrants wanting to do good in their community. Or so they say. They believe that all right-wingers are anti-human demons. They count as a cult, and they believe in Scousso, an ancient mythical do-gooder monster. They follow ancient texts that tell of the Civilum (outside peoples) that will to go to Persia (now Baldapehlva). The first of the Civilum will reap the rewards of Scousso. They must do good in their towns to achieve the state of Yghdawsanno, a sort-of Nirvana + Heaven. The ones that don't will lose consciousness and be no longer.

The Imijran are the only big society that count as a cult.

Probably the most influential secret society in the Gaulish Empire is the Arexta Argantopundarica, or Assembly of the Radiant Lotus, a syncretic religious order established in the 17th century after increased interaction with Asia caused the popularization of Buddhist mysticism in the upper classes of Gaulish society for some time. Until the end of the revolutionary fascist government in the mid 20th centuries, this order received the honor of having many Belgic emperors participate in its activities, and to this day many of the Gaulish republican elite are suspected to have some part in it. Almost nothing is known about the group, though, and many build conspiracy theories on little more than the popularity of the organization in the highest levels of Gaulish society and occasional events that may be perceived as contrived and unjust to conspiracy theorist types.

Other than this, many cults exist among the druids of Gaul and there are believed to still be some remaining from the time of the fascist regime of the mid 1900s. These are almost never suspected to have any higher significance in the grand scheme of things, though.

There is a secret society located all throughout Nortainland. Having roots in the Great War in 1632, the so-called 'Kings Society' is a secret royal group dedicated to, amongst other things, maintaining the Black Archives. Of course, most people are unaware of it, as it is a collection of historical records, items, books, messages and correspondence that are to be protected from public knowledge. Having roots from so long ago, it hasn't changed much throughout its 400 year history. All other secret societies are banned under 'Gimmler's Law' of 1872 which states:

Some consider the Draéryn, the organisation which controls the draér and the canon of the Shalotte Pantheon, to be a quasi-secret society, insomuch as while they hide no elements of the religion itself from the public, their internal traditions and rituals are mostly known only to the draér themselves. While the Draérn has little political power (with the Domnaeni herself having a controlling seat on their council, it could be said that they are subjected to some measure of political power), they have great social relevance in the small archipelago due to the spirituality of its people, and most educated professionals in Shalotte count themselves among their number.

1. Private employers, landlords, home sellers, public stores, schools, colleges, and universities are not allowed to discriminated based on age, gender, race, genetic appearance, color, ethnicity, who there parents/relatives are, where they were born, country of origin, national origin, nationality, citizenship status, immigration status, gossip said about them, hsd/ged status.
