It's 2012. The USSR didn't fall, although the Baltic states are independent. However, the communism fell in East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. Yugoslavia has been divided - but communists are still in power in Serbia, Macedonia and Albania. The Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan in 1994, leaving the country in chaos. In Iraq, Sadaam Hussein was deposed in 1991, after the Gulf War. Following he 11/9 attack and war on terrorism the situation in the Middle East is very chaotic. The Islamist coups happened in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman and Jordania, which led to creation of anti-Israeli and anti-Western Caliphate. Meanwhile, a series of Kurdish rebellions in Turkey, Iraq and Syria resulted in creation of Kurdistan, unrecognised by international community. The West is constantly threatened by terrorists. In China PR, ethnic tensions between the Han, Uighurs and Tibetans rise. Many believe that the apocalypse is close... Is it really 2 minutes to midnight?

The Senate President, Juan Ponce Enrile had signaled the start of the Session, The Final Reading of R.A 10521 Initiating the Progress of Integrating the Philippines as a Direct Protectorate of the South Asian Confederation. The Senator who initiated the R.A 10521 Campaign, Senator Antonio Trillianes stated that this "was the only way to secure Philippine Independence from Invaders". It was the 10th of November.. that meant it was almost December.. Rome was lighting up like an beatiful pearl.
The streets were bustling and people were smiling, there were a few couples around, and Patrick Retrate went into his his apartment.
His apartment was an middle-class apartment.

He lived on the 2nd story of the apartment, and he had an flatscreen TV and some other luxuries. He lived alone, but he had friends in his university, it was Sunday, and he would need to finish up the project in politics class tomorrow regarding Italy's situation. Patrick was 19 years old, and he was aspiring to become an politician or something like that. He went to his desk and finished the project, he was extremely tired.
He turned on the television in his bed, and watched the election results.. yes - there were elections of the President in Italy. Italy was an direct-democracy, an presidential republic, meaning the President had all of *the power*, so these elections were very important. He himself was an, let's say, realist. That meant he didn't agree with many politicians that were extremely optimist or vice versa.
He had turned the TV on but his electricity was off.. yeah.. he hadn't paid for his electricity "I forgot.." Patrick thought to himself.

He then picked up the daily newspaper he had brought for 20 Cents at an kiosk in northern Rome - yes.. the cultural and financial divide still existed in Italy, and the saying still went around "Welcome to southern Italy - the European Africa. If you would drive in northern Italy, there would be factories every 10 km, but in southern Italy there weren't even chimnies on houses for 100 km.", Patrick thought to himself, making a small laugh.
Patrick had voted for the party which was led by Emily Renza - 'FORZA ITALIA' it was called. That party supported an strong military and more involvement in foreign affairs.. Patrick was quite the realist - he knew that Italy's defense capabilities were at their worst in 15 years, so he had thought that militarization was quite the good idea, and the party was democratic.

To his delight, at the headlines it was written in bold, large text: "FORZA ITALIA - Emily Renza elected as President of the Republic! Patrick Caoche is the Prime Minister!". Hm, yeah.. the Prime Minister had the same name as him! It was going to be an laugh at the university, he knew it.
He then folded the newspaper and put it down next to the small lamp on his desk, and cuddled in his bed. Within minutes, he was sleeping.

In reaction to the South Asia Confederacy, the US 7th fleet has been placed on high alert. PACFLTCOM (Pacific Fleet Command), has issued orders to 6th Fleet (Based in San Diego) and 5th Fleet (Based in Pearl Harbor) to sail for the South Pacific. 7th Fleet will remain in the South China Sea while 6th Fleet goes to Oceania to support regional allies. 5th Fleet will deploy to the Sea of Japan to help shore up defenses in Japan. In addition, four Marine divisions, totaling 92,160 men and women, have been ordered to Japan and Okinawa. NATO units in Europe participate in a 10 day communications exercise, simulating a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. It is hoped the Soviets do not take this exercise as a prelude to war, as they erroneously did in 1983.

In central Europe, the US 101st Airborne Division, in concert with Central European military forces, prepare to fight a simulated Soviet invasion of Central Europe and the Balkans. The plan revolves around an asymmetric style of warfare. Given the emphasis on hit and run ambushes of Soviet armored columns, weapons caches throughout the Italian Peninsula are checked and rechecked. US Airborne troops provide an Opposing Force (OpFor) for the Italian personnel they operate with. It is hoped that they will never have to execute this plan.

In the Pacific, US, Australian, and Japanese naval forces have begun Exercise Noble Trident 12, a three week naval exercise that aims at strengthening relations between the sailors and amphibious troops of the three nations. It is also being referred to as a "Demonstration of Force" for the South Asian Confederacy. A White House spokesman has said that, "It is our way of telling the SAC that we are serious. We aren't taking any of their shit this time around."
