Nation Name: The Royal Isles of Shalotte
Official languages: Hebrédan
The name of the country in the official languages: naeHiorag Domrigád Shalotte
National religion: Shalotte Polytheism

Most popular film: There are no 'films' in Shalotte popular culture. The most popular plays, however, are a series of performances that portray the exploits of their gods, known collectively as the Sagas of the Illuoch-taer. Those performed by the famous Domnaeni's Actors troupe are particularly lauded.
Most popular song: Unknown. Folk songs are popular, but the most popular would be difficult to determine.
Most popular music artists/band: Performances by travelling musicians known as the col'tir-daen are popular.
Most popular (video)game: Not applicable.
Most popular book: Almost certainly the religious canon (which has no formal name) of the Shalotte Pantheon. There is a historical fiction novel about (and named) The First Domnaeni, which is probably the most widely-read non-religious book in Shalotte. First published in around 1750, it is considered to be the 'finest example of Hebrédan prose in existence' by scholars.

Fashion trends: Shalotte clothing is practical, rather than fashionable. Having said that, whatever the Domnaeni is seen wearing tends to be adopted quite quickly by the women of the country. She is thought to be responsible for the current tendency for women to wear predominantly white and loose clothing in warm/indoor conditions.

Most popular pastime: During winter, any Shalottes invariably spend a lot of time indoors to escape the harsh weather. During this time they will socialise with family and friends, sharing stories or singing songs over drinks. In the summer months, what little recreational time there is may be spent on rowing contests or laethar aéni games. Festivals often feature performances by visiting col'tir-daen, while travelling actors may sometimes put on plays in some of the larger settlements.
Highest selling Food item: Flatbread and goat's cheese are widely eaten in Shalotte, as are the eggs of sea birds. Lamb and mutton are the most widely-consumed meats, though they are rarer and saved for special meals.
Highest selling beverage: Other than water and goat's milk, Shalotte is famous (well, unique) for bérin. Bérin is a light, barley malted, wheat-based beer that is traditionally served warm in large pottery mugs. Bérin is drank with most meals, as Shalottes believe it warms their bodies.

Postby Mansuriyyah Islamic State » Thu Nov 28, 2019 7:21 am

Nation Name: Mansuriyyah
Official languages: Arabic, Persian (official), Kurdish, Turkish, Chechen (co-official), other recognized minority languages
National religion: Islam

Most popular film: “When Flowers Whither”. A tale of two orphaned siblings trying to survive 1940’s Siduri War.
Most popular song: The Shimmering Light (a religious litany in praise of Prophet Muhammad)
Most popular music artists/band: Ahbab al-Mustafa, a religious singing group (although Gylean rock bands are also popular)
Most popular (video)game: Call of Jihad 4: Yalunji’s Liberation. The latest installment of a very popular FPS game, it’s set in the near future during a hypothetical Mansuri military action to retake territories lost during 1981’s with with its southern neighbor.
Most popular book: The Koran is by far the most popular, with millions of Mansuris having committed it to memory. Other than religious books, the most popular literary work is “Fitrah”. It narrates the story of a petty criminal of loose moral standing whose only apparent quality was loving his family, that has to look after his only child after the untimely death of his wife. The book covers themes like moral ambiguity, criminality and fatherhood and is deemed to have opened a new chapter in Mansuri literature.

Fashion trends: Mansuri society is both culturally diverse and socially conservative, and it reflects on peoples’ dressing style. Most people prefer to stick with traditional (or modernized traditional versions) fashions. That include, in the eastern and northern provinces, different styles of shalvar (loose-fitting pants), shirts and jubbas (a knee to calf length coat) for men, and a variety of jilbabs and scarves for women. In southern and central provinces, long robes (thawb) for men and embroidered abayas for women are favored. Head coverings are a big thing, with virtually all women covering their hair (and some 25 percent also the face), while men also traditionally always wear some kind of headgear, ranging from simple knitted caps to carefully hand wrapped turbans. Modern urban youth, however, often tends to eschew traditional styles. The current trend is to wear baggy sportswear, like tracksuits, with t-shirts (for males) or covered with a matching abaya and a colorful scarf (for females)

Most popular past time: The family is the heart of Mansuri social life. Frequent visits and exchanges of invitations for meals among family members are integral to daily living as well as family outings to favourite picnic spots by streams or to mountain resorts.
Highest selling Food item: Bread. There are many regional varieties, and it’s eaten in virtually every meal in every Mansuri household. Flatbreads are the most common, with pita, tandir and naan being particularly popular. Following that, kebabs (in many regional varieties) are the most popular food product.
Highest selling beverage: Tea, in many varieties

Nation Name: Imperial Community of the Enso and Mu
Official languages: Mugo
The name of the country in the official languages: Mujinsangha
National religion: Rinzai Zen Buddhism (other sects in common practice - religious freedom under law)
(All answers to follow were prepared at the time of writing. Describing a culture is shooting at a moving target with outdated windage information)

Most popular film: Romancing the Stones - The story of a young go champion who falls in love with his rival. One of the first mainstream gay romance stories in Mujin cinema, with a typical pun-title which in no way connects it to the movie of a similar title. It had an all-star cast and has been made absurdly popular through the use of Sentai-style over-the-top action sequences in some of the Go matches depicted.
Most popular song: Accelerate - a likely soon-to-be-forgotten intro for a popular mecha anime, which was recorded by:
Most popular music artists/band: The Silent Revolution - a long-standing M-Pop band that's centered around their frontperson, nonbinary musician Seiko "Gettz"
Most popular (video)game: Labarynth L is a popular home console and PC-platform game (supported on most OSes), which uses an advanced logic engine to generate a roguelike escape-the-room experience, with a unique dungeon layout and puzzle structure each time. New expansions are routinely released. With video gaming arcades still being popular, the most popular cabinet game is Akira Sharpe a four player light-cycle rhythm game available at three different cabinet price points - a two-player version, 4 players with LCD flat-panel display, and a VR headset option. Tournaments around this game are often livestreamed and incredibly popular.
Most popular book: By raw sales, a print edition known as the "Imperial Sutra Book" is the sales leader, having sold more than enough copies to have one in every home and hotel room. The book comprises a collection of sutras and commentaries on sutras from several temples in the Imperial Quarter of Kyoto. A popular "Travellers Edition", found in hotels, has a foreward by Shodo Harada Roshi on a basic introduction to the practice of Zazen.

Fashion trends: Foreign-folk hybrid fashions, on the out during a fashion-foreign period in the 70s through early 00s, are starting to make a comeback, particularly in upper-middle-class office settings and among merchant types across the entire middle class. This style involves taking elements of "traditional" mujin dress (yukata in particular), along with some other iconically Mujin but not-entirely-traditional fashions (particular styles of school uniforms), and merging those with popular fashions from around the world.

Most popular past time: Video Games and Reading are in competition for the best sales, though some surveys suggest that Go, Shoji, and Majong still command a reasonable trade in terms of hours spent.
Highest selling Food item: Ruling out a very popular sector in staple foods (rice, in that case) and traditional "cuisine" (regional), the most popular mass-market food item in terms of units sold are convenience store boxed lunch (bento)
Highest selling beverage: Green Tea, followed in a close second by Coffee, and third by soft drinks (of which cola and lemon is the most popular flavour)

Nation Name: The Most Serene Republic Of Lanoraie
Official languages: Lanomiran
The name of the country in the official languages: La Elvi Serini Repluva Do Lanoraie
National religion: None

Here's where it gets interesting. When people fled from Earth to our new home, they brought with them millions of songs, movies, video games, even e-books. Up until very recently, the films and songs most popular were from Earth. As people found more songs (for example) from the archive compiled by both the government and independent parties, songs would skyrocket to stardom and slowly fade. Nowadays, Lanoraie's own creative industries are booming, but I'll go ahead and list the media most popular from old Earth as well, in italics.

Most popular film: Amélie | Rei Dou (Go Do, named after a Sigur Rós song, a film about a group of 5 children who struggle to keep each other afloat during a turbulent wintertime, as their families and friends undergo tragedies)

Most popular song: Chicago by Sufjan Stevens was a song I struggled to go a day without hearing, whether on podcasts, in convenience stores, on web shows...It's similar to the type of music Lanomirans typically like; soft spoken, with uplifting overtones, but perhaps about something not so happy? | Lux Novida (Lux Novida, "maximum overdrive" is the name of the first street drug ever made in Lanoraie, and the song--a rock ballad--is subsequently about the singer's painful love for a classmate who is addicted to it) by UNCOOL was the most-listened to song on MimiTube this year.

Most popular music artists/band: Sigur Rós is still more popular than any Lanomiran artist. | UNCOOL, headed by eclectic pianist/guitarist Nyoy

Most popular (video)game: Katamari Damacy | Where The Book Ends Meet, an incredulously detailed multi-ending video game centering around you, the protagonist, and how you shape the landscape of a quaint little farming village in northern Lanoraie. The game has over 48 endings, and according to my more gaming enthusiastic coworkers, some are rather...absurd. Apparently if you leave a faucet running in the fields for a week straight, a flash flood will occur in the river and wash the entire village downstream into the ocean, where you all are forced to dance for eternity for the entertainment of sea creatures.

Most popular book: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, the first book to ever be fully translated into Lanomiran, has stuck around as a classic. | Pa De Deux by Onnis LeTourneau. Don't let the dainty French title run you amok; the story is about a nosy longshoreman and the utterly wild conversations he overhears from patrons in his favorite lounge. This story is not for children!

Fashion trends: I went through the trouble of consulting our local fashion police, and the madame informed me that the currents have ushered in a long-standing, possibly stagnant era of fashion that is very similar to fashion from east Asia on old Earth during the 2005 - 2011 eras. I can see the comparison. There is much emphasis on looking youthful.

Most popular past time: Spending time with loved ones, so it seems.

Highest selling Food item: Instant ramen has taken the country by storm, with black bean "Korean-style" noodles and "song of the sea" (composed of native fish, vegetables, and grains) flavors being the most popular.

Highest selling beverage: Hahaha. I looked this up for posterity's sake, but I didn't have to. Gallante Petal is a, ahem, "flower flavored honey and milk boba drink so dainty and feminine, it feels like true love's kiss!" ...Their marketing words, not mine. The citrus and bussbuss (similar to lemongrass) variant is also very popular.

Nation Name: The Imperial Colony of Autolyko
Official languages: Esperanto, Icelandic, Scots Gaelic, Dutch, and Autolykan
The name of the country in the official languages: La Imperia Kolonio de Aŭtoliko (Esperanto), Bresku Nýlendu Autolyko (Icelandic), Coloinidh Ìmpireil Autolycho (Scots Gaelic), De Keizerlijke Kolonie van Autolijko (Dutch), De Keyserlige Koloni var Autolyko (Autolykan)
National religion: Vikkism

Most popular film: “Tynde Jongens” (Autolykan; “Lost Boys”) [3170 A.D., 161 P.A.], directed by Henning Fiedler, written by Maeve Dalgaard, starring Batu Davaa and Bryn Kermit. Not to be confused with 1987 American film, “Tynde Jongens” follows two teenagers (a Mongolic boy and Welsh-Manx demiboy) skipping school and taking a spur-of-the-moment adventure into Autolyko’s untamed wilderness. Along the way they meet many strange characters until their adventure becomes overwhelmingly fantastical. It is a famed black comedy, poking fun at many political ideologies of the time and preaching anarchism and free thought. It spawned many MANY sequels, spin-offs, and reboots, none of which have reached this particular story’s glory.
Most popular song: “Marbh an Righ” (Scots Gaelic; “Kill the King”) by Edna mac Diarmaid [released in 3121 AD, 135 PA]. An incredibly popular folk ballad written by the singer in the later years of her life in her native tongue of Scots Gaelic, the song is heavily based off of the corrupt Fransisko Atalanto (a notorious Imperialist governor), his reign, and his later assassination. The song sparked many covers in the decades and centuries to come, one by famous band “Tuutati”. The song title has inspired the common phrase “Marvan Ryg”, which is often used when talking about governmental tyranny.
Most popular music artists/band: “Tuutati” [est. 3202-3239 AD, 179-199 PA]. A rock band consisting of Scots Gaelic, Icelandic, Finnic, Mongolic, Maori, and Slavic identifying peoples, they are well-known for their multitude of sounds. It was well-known that band members were extremely proficient in a multitude of instruments, and would often switch positions and sing songs in many different languages. Their genre changed from alt-rock-punk, to alt-rock-grunge, to psychedelic rock, to pagan-folk-historical, to folk-punk over the many years of their existence.
Most popular (video)game: “Villta Veiði” (Icelandic; “Wild Hunt) [released in 3192 AD, 173 PA]. A Bronze Age simulator rpg. Players join a “tribe” consisting of other players and have to ensure the survival of their tribe in a randomly generated wilderness, all the while competing for resources and land with NPC enemies and other player-run tribes. The game is mass-multiplayer and updates in “seasons”. A season ends when a tribe has incorporated all other tribes into its land. The game is in its 35th season.
Most popular book: “Den Egreka” (Autolykan; “The Historian”) by Inka Pajari [published in 3023 AD, 82 P.A.]. Based on the book “La Balado de la Unua Vintro” (Esperanto; “The Ballad of the First Winter”) by Lauchlan Cadwallader [published in 2898 AD, 18 PA]. The source material was written over the course of the first couple of hard years of colonization known as the Ash Winter, by a Scots Gaelic cultural anthropologist and historian, and is an autobiographical non-fiction collection of short stories and novellas telling the stories of individual first colonists, their lives before migration, and their lives on their new home. “Den Egreka” is a fictional retelling of that historian’s (Lauchlan Cadwallader’s) journey of collecting these stories, and his personal struggles during the time period, compressed into a single winter. The book has inspired an incredibly popular stage play of the same name, and several TV series and movies.

Fashion trends: Tartan and plaid patterns of vibrant and differing colors have been common on the colony since its inception and are often displayed on different pieces of clothing. Men and women typically dress similarly, with pants, long-sleeved wool shirts, and working boots. Hair styles change with every 4 decades or so, but currently it is popular for women to wear their hair in pixie cuts, and men to have mohawks, with older and more important men wearing theirs in long ponytails. Locals often wear many tattoos and piercings.

Most popular past time: “Meley”, a mock melee fight played with wooden swords and melee weapons, often between teams two or more.
Highest selling Food item: “Kanka”, the Autolykan word for kankomar meat. A kankomar is a crustaceanoid that resembles a cross between a lobster and a crab, about twice the size of a house cat. Kankomar meat is not quite as delicious as crab or lobster meat, but kankomars are more than abundant on the planet, and unlike other white meats in can last for up to a month without being refrigerated. It is staple of many lower class diets and is instrumental in many cultural dishes such as “Kankabrod”, “Vleniki”, and “Eskorfost”. It has been called the Autolykan equivalent to the potato.
Highest selling beverage: “Suug” (from Scots Gaelic for “tree sap”), an alcoholic beverage diluted from the sap of the Everpale Tree. Unlike earth alcohols that incorporate tree sap, suug has a rather strong floral taste, much like a very high-quality gin. Adding or subtracting percentage of alcohol content-to-liquid ratio seems to have no negative effects on flavor. Low-alcohol versions are common throughout the colony, and high-alcohol versions are especially popular among the upper class.

Most popular film: "Crusade" (Venetian: "Crosiata"), directed by Benedeto Cambini, starring Reneer Holt, Kukulkan Tlopanec, Goland Sadik, and Antonio Abate. The story follows the 5th Foreign Legion (codenamed: "the Sphinxes") of the Lugani-Roosevelt Mercenary Company, as they participate in the early parts of the Second Great Mongolian War. The action centers on the Battle of Lhasa, one of the bloodiest battles of that war, which lasted almost over 3 months. In that battle, the entire 5th Foreign Legion was wiped out holding their ground, allowing the Zurich Pact forces to win the day. The film is both a profound meditation on patriotism and on the nature of war and violence. Extremely notable is Tuko-Mongolian actress Goland Sadik's portrayal of Khulan Batbayar, the real life captain of the Sphinxes, who was herself a Mongolian fighting against Mongolians.
Most popular song: "I Know Where the Birds Go" (Venetian: "So Dove Vano Gli Ucceli") by Australian-born soft-rock/acoustic artist Camaro Naggia, released with his 1988 album "Paradise" (Venetian: "Paradiso"). It was unique at its time, and echoes the peace-loving, steadily progressing views of the nation of the past few decades.

Most popular (video)game: Zampia, a gambling card game. You can often see strangers playing it in any Venetian coffee house.

The story takes place in the late 1700s during the Aztec-Iberian Wars, and followers the head of a fictional tobacco company trying to make a profit in the New World amongst all the carnage. It has been praised for mirroring the class struggles of today's time, and has caused a bit of a social uprising in the youth of the Republics.
