Twigs and leaves snapped underfoot as the trio made their way quickly but deliberately through the light wooded area, glimpses of black and grey rectangles were visible through breaks in the treeline, buildings that were starting to crumble under the covenant assault as they mercilessly blasted their way through the city. The distant popping of gunfire was just audible in the distance, sometimes accompanied by muffled explosions that caused the trees to flutter in unison. It was strangely quiet in the forest itself however, a serene atmosphere that was completely contrasted by the carnage happening just minutes away, if one looked closely they could see the scurrying of small woodland creatures as they watched the three large lumbering figures crash past.

Dragan kept his MA5C rifle pointed forwards at chest height, finger ever so lightly brushing the trigger guard, every tree was a possible hiding place for an Elite, every crest a snipers perch and every rock an ambush spot for unsuspecting soldiers, hopefully the Covenant saw the disadvantages of fighting in a forest and had kept to the city, but the groups job wasn't to assume, it was to know. The group came to a small clearing, however it wasn't part of the natural formation of the forest, evidenced by the fact that multiple trees had fallen completely over or had been snapped in two, this long scar ran for about thirty foot until at the end of it, a single burning wreck lay overturned in the dirt. At first it was hard to identify because all that remained was black, charred metal, however moving to one side it became apparent this was the remains of an AV-14 Attack VTOL, or the Hornet for short. Judging by the massive path gouged out in the terrain, it had come down quite violently and dragged along the ground before coming to its final resting place, its right engine unit was missing and the left one was badly damaged and still smouldering. When Dragan approached the front to identify any remains, the canopy had been removed and the pilots seat was void of any corpse, as was the surrounding area suggesting the occupant had got away. Seeing nothing else of importance, Dragan signaled for the group to move on.

Two minutes later the group approached the edge of the trees, the abrupt end to the foliage coincided with a sharp drop but provided ample view of the local area from an elevated position. The city limits started around 700 meters away straight infront of them, and off to the right was the main road leading in, blockaded by multiple wrecks of Civillian, UNSC and Covenant vehicles alike, the defenders had set up makeshift fortified positions along the road flanking both sides but they hand't been enough, metal plates, sandbags and crates all lay strewn over the place.

"Tucker get your scope up and scan our left flank. Hawkins you take up rear security" Ilyas motioned and crouched down low to the edge of the ridge and used his VISR to zoom in on the edge of town.

However something much closer caught his eye, a shroud of dust that was lifting over the expanse between them and the town, and it was closing fast. The origin of hte dust was caused by a single wraith, flanked by two ghosts on either side making way towards the trio. That wasn't all, two more Wraiths were moving parallel were heading towards the rest of Eclipse, a gaggle of grunts led by a Brute Minor filed not far behind, armed with Plasma Rifles and Spikers.

"Fuck" He swore to himself quietly and crept back from the edge.

"Hawkins, Tucker. Look alive we have contacts en-route. One Wraith and two ghosts. Stay low and don't fire yet."

He keyed in his mic to contact Ethan with the news.

"Lieutenant Woods. Contacts to your direct north. Two Wraiths supported by ground troops headed towards your position. We've also got contacts coming our way. Should we engage?"
Yo, that's mad.

Sgt. Sam Stahlman - Outside of Hyade, Dione, Atlas, Japetus

Sgt. Samuel Stahlman, Member of Eclipse, Fireteam Alpha. Armored in a black and gray ODST CQB BDU, which, compared to the standard ODST armor has a two-piece ballistic plate instead of a left pauldron on his shoulder, as well as an optics device relaying images and video to squad-mates and command, and armed with an MA5C Rifle today, with the standard M6G, Combat knife and 3 M9 grenades, as well as a secret Napalm grenade for if needed. An almost standard suitup.

Sam gripped to the drivers side of the Gauss hog, as it twisted its way down the path. From this position, Sam guessed he could put himself into the action quicker than those seated, by throwing himself from the warthog into cover, and like the CQB motto from the ODST says "First Strike and Vigilance".

Sam hardly talked while they road focused entirely on his surroundings and his VISR, which gave him all the data he needs, from the map of the area to scanning the woods for Covenant ambush, Unfortunately as they left the darkness of the woods, Sam had to shut off part of his VISR as not to blind him, the low light enhancement feature and identification feature cannot work in daylight due to blinding the user, However he still had access to the data displays and GPS of the system.

Knowing full well that Lt. Woods could glance down at his TACPAD and see the map, Sam didn't say they were nearing the highway but did say loud enough for the teammates on the Gauss warthog to hear "Looks like unidentified contact moving our way in the distance, can't make out much more however sir, it's too bright for the VISR" continuing while hating himself for saying the irony "So from here on out, I'm in the dark for spotting...."

Lt. Ethan Woods // near Hyade, Dione, Atlas, Japetus

Ethan gave the order to stop the convoy, listening to the scouting party’s report and grimacing at the mention of the alien heavy armor. A direct confrontation was possible but not entirely advisable. The Scorpion could match if not best the Covenant Wraith any day of the week, but two-on-one skewed those odds enough so to be hesitant, and while the Gauss cannon could cause some major damage they would first need to maneuver around behind the alien tank, a gamble in its own right should the ground troops be carrying anti-armor. Brute force, while always an option, would be best saved for later. As it was the humans had the advantage early on, being hidden. It would be foolish to waste such an opportunity.

To Ilyas: “Avoid engagements whenever possible. We need your eyes on that highway.” To those in the convoy: “They don’t know we’re coming so let’s greet them as they pass. Kruger, you call the shots on that MBT. Fire as soon as you can confirm a kill. The Hogs will mop up. Bressler, focus on the little guys while we circle around; anything with a big ass gun takes priority. Don’t bunch up in case they get lucky.”

Confirmations sounded across the comm.

And then they waited.

The Scorpion had pushed as close as possible towards the highway from the road, using the trees for cover, killing the engine lest the sound betray the tank’s position. The Warthogs were behind and slightly off to the side, ready to tear onto the roadway the moment they engaged. Everyone else was hanging further back.

The first Covenant appeared, perhaps 100 yards distance, a lance of Grunts led by an impatient Brute. A few of the soldiers tensed but Ethan had them hold their fire. As of know they were still unnoticed. A few more ground troops and then the first Wraith, hovering above the ground with its unmistakable whine. Kruger held the tank back, waiting as the second Wraith came into view. A Brute had only just taken notice of the stilled convoy when the tungsten round tore through the air, striking the trailing Wraith in the rear and exploding in violet fire, the nearest Covenant incinerated by the heat. The alien tank fell to the earth, secondary explosions tearing apart its chitinous hull.

“Punch it!” shouted Ethan, the Warthog speeding forward with Bressler in tow.

The Brutes were shouting at their troops, trying to ready a counter as the LAAG opened up, cutting through several as the human vehicles twisted around the wreckage of the tank, the Gauss responding as well as the lead tank came into sight. The magnetically accelerated round glanced the armor, diverting upwards and away, leaving a black mark where it had connected. The Wraith was turning to engage, plasma from the ground forces heating the air in bursts of green and blue. The two Warthogs were quickly away from the small arms but the tank was now in position, unleashing a volley that arced high before impacting a dozen yards from Ethan. Braking, the Hog slid into a 180 and made back towards the Covenant line, making to catch them from both sides as Kruger and the others moved for another shot.

The Wraith readied another volley.

“Avoid engagements whenever possible. We need your eyes on that highway.”

Ilyas mused an acknowledgement and watched as the group headed for Ethan moved out of sight behind the treeline, and into the forest. In the meanwhile, the group poised below their position had come to a halt and the two Ghosts started surveying the surrounding area, luckily for Ilyas and his group, the cliff prevented any vehicles from getting to their position, and they were well camouflaged by the arrangement of bushes and tall grass that graced the top of the cliff. For a few tense moments nothing was happening, only the low drone of the vehicles below were auidable and the sounds of battle going on in the city were being carried the opposite way by the wind. This peace was soon shattered by a large shockwave that jolted the trees, followed by the low boom that one could only assume was the main cannon on the Scorpion.

A second explosion confirmed the destruction of the first Wraith, and more weapons could be heard opening up to tackle the second, this had also caught the attention of the Covenant detachment below their current position, and the two Ghosts had moved up alongside the Wraith and began to move in the direction of Ethan and the rest of Eclipse.

"Woods. You have a third Wraith approaching backed up by two Ghosts. They are approaching your eastern flank".

Hyade, Dione, Atlas, Japetus
Cpl. Hadrian Racker

Hadrian grimaced as his first shot was deflected by the curved purple armor of the wraith tank. Luckily, it only took about half a second for the next round to cycle in. The 'hog did a 180, and the corporal clutched the grip. As the hog made for the side of the tank, he fired off another shot at gunner. The 25x130mm projectile tore through the brute minor at Mach 40 speeds, killing the beast immediately. The thermal imaging on the gun highlit the core, and the driver. The wraith maneuvered to target the Scorpion, deeming it a bigger threat than the 'hog. Hadrian thought it was a reckless move until Ilyas notified them about the third wraith. He groaned, but fired the tungsten round into the wraith's rear end. It quickly started a chain reaction of explosions as Hadrian turned to face the oncoming trio of vehicles.

MSgt. Jack "Ripper" Gordon
near Hyade, Dione, Atlas, Japetus

"Son of a.. Okay Charlie, dismount and take up firing positions against covie foot soldiers! Ram, You stay here in the hog in case we need to haul ass if things hit the shitter, move Charlie!" Jack yelled, jumping out of his seat and sprinting towards the highway. Ducking from stray shots, he dived into a ditch that would provide some good cover and a decent firing position, and quickly turned around to make sure no one had gotten hit while going to their respective positions. Once that was done he turned back towards the fighting, crawled up to the lip of the ditch, and looked around for any nearby hostiles, and upon spotting a squad of Covenant soldiers took aim and let loose.

Sgt. Michael Covenchik,
UNSC Savannah,
Reach Orbit

Michael Covenchik walked towards the landing bay of the UNSC Savannah with a cheap Harvest Cigarette tucked between his lips. He felt older than he was and probably looked the part. When he shaved before reaching orbit, he looked at his reflection and saw a months worth of stubble turning into a beard and mustache. His facial features were more pronounced now after spending a month hunting Insurrectionists across the galaxy. "Damn, you look like you've seen hell." He thought as he began to cut his dark, scraggly beard, which resulted in a very prominent five o'clock shadow. His physical appearance had changed as well, He was sure that he had lost weight and gained more muscle mass in his upper body. The final thing was he now walked with a slight limp after catching grenade shrapnel on Victoria while fighting the URF.

As he boarded his Pelican, bound for Sword Base where he would later rendezvous with the Memento Mori, he felt a slight nostalgic ping as he thought about the Memento Mori. "I wonder if Charlie would still recognize me." He smiled ,muttered a few words in Romanian and tried to sleep as the Pelican lifted off and headed to Sword Base.

Lt. Ethan Woods // near Hyade, Dione, Atlas, Japetus

The second Wraith exploded, scorching the few Jackals that had seen fit to take cover near its chitinous hull. The bird-like aliens were shredded by the blast, those who survived being quickly mowed down by machinegun fire. The Covenant ground forces were making towards the Scorpion, ducking to and from cover to avoid the anti-personnel weapon sending hot lead into their ranks, firing bursts of plasma as they tried to maneuver their heavier weapons into position. Bressler was quick to barrel into the engagement, circling around to bring the LAAG to bare.

Ethan was about to join him when Ilyas came through over the radio.

Ubaria wrote:"Woods. You have a third Wraith approaching backed up by two Ghosts. They are approaching your eastern flank".

The Lieutenant had no time to curse or say much really as a ball of superheated plasma arced high into the air from where Ilyas had said, peaking before falling back down towards earth, the Warthog twisting violently to avoid the lethal blow. Whitfield let loose a string of curses as the plasma detonated too close for comfort, heat washing over them as the rear wheels went partially airborne. The vehicle fishtailed. Ethan held on as they spun, the front end colliding with a cement barrier as they came to a stop.

Two purple forms materialized around the bend of the highway, speeding forward with an unmistakable whine. Whitfield threw the massive jeep into reverse as they opened fire, rapid bolts of azure plasma melting the cement. The Warthog spun, moving into drive and speeding away from another attack, the pair of Ghost making to run down the Warthog.

Another plasma volley from the Wraith. The road was obliterated before them, forcing the Warthog to turn hard to its right to avoid the crater, right into the path of one of the Ghost. The alien vehicle struck the rear end, cracking its own hull with the force of impact and spinning the jeep near 180. The second Ghost nearly collided with the first, killing its speed to better maneuver, a fatal error. Racker had the shot and took it, the magnetically accelerated round tearing through the Grunt and into the machinery, detonating everything in a blue fireball.

“Take that you bastard!” jeered Whitfield, giving the dead Ghost an obscene hand gesture.

Another whine as the air was superheated.

“Move!” ordered Ethan.

Whitfield looked away from the CO, towards where the sound was coming from. “What… oh shit!”

The sergeant gunned the Warthog’s engines, tires skidding before finding the traction needed to speed them away, the shockwave of the Wraith’s plasma nearly spinning them once more as it impacted. The beetle-like vehicle could be seen in the distance, unleashing volley after volley in reckless abandon. Kruger and the Scorpion were in no position to intervene, pinned down by Covenant forces that had managed to flank around them, harassing the armor with small arms as heavier weapons made small gains in their efforts to move into effective range. The human MBT could easily obliterate anything in its way but would risk exposing itself to Covenant fuel-rods. Kruger was playing it safe, unwilling to rush ahead only for the tank to take a critical hit. A good tactic but one that did little to aid Ethan and the Warthog.

Plasma tore into the rear end of the vehicle, the remaining Ghost having moved in for the attack, juking wildly to avoid the M68. Another volley from the Wraith landed behind them, striking an abandoned vehicle and spraying the air with shrapnel. More volleys were inbound. The Ghost hounded them, making attempts to target the gunner but Whitfield wasn’t allowing for an easy shot, a double edged sword as it were. Another volley landed, closer this time.

Ethan held onto whatever he could. “Brake hard!”

The sergeant gave the CO an incredulous look. “What?!”

“Just do it!”

Whitfield mumbled something before stomping his foot on the brakes, the Warthog stopping as suddenly as a massive jeep could stop. The Ghost was too late to react, slamming into the back of the Warthog and nearly lifting all four wheels off of the ground. They landed with a small bounce.

“Move, now!”

The Warthog sped off, turning sharply over the ruins of another interstate barrier, the Wraith volley coming down just where they had been only moments earlier, obliterating the unfortunate ghost in a case of friendly fire.

Now only the Wraith was left.

“It looks pissed,” commented Whitfield as the Warthog closed the distance.

The Wraith made to unleash another volley but was intercepted by a high velocity slug which penetrate its hull, scrambling its internals and causing a chain reaction, the explosions killing the driver before the entire vehicle went critical.

The Warthog screeched to a stop. They were soon enough hailed on the comm channel for which Ethan answered. “This is Lieutenant Woods. Who is this?”

An unfamiliar voice responded, heavily accented. “Sergeant Mikhailovich, Unit Twenty-two, Second Army Group. Saw you had a tank problem. Cobra’s deployed near klick from your position. We have overwatch of most of highway.”

“Good to have friendlies,” Ethan responded.

“Likewise. We were-” A pause and then a curse in a language Ethan did not understand. “Visual on Covenant armor battalion, further up highway. Der’mo. They’re moving for Army group.”

“We’ll just have to punch through.”

“Da. We cover you.”

To his team: “We’re moving to flank Covenant armor. Hawkins, take your team to join up with our new friends. Can’t let the Covenant take out the Cobra.”

Krueger was the first to respond. “We’re… uh, a little busy.”

Whitfield was quick to move the Warthog so that the M68 could reengage the remaining Covenant forces.

Cpl. Hadrian Racker

Hadrian didn't know he'd been holding his breath until he let it out. He didn't even need to ask as Whitfield to get him an angle. The gausshog slid into position as Hadrian lined up shots, and fired. The hypersonic slugs tore through the infantry easy. Normally, he would of told everyone to cover their ears as the booms were known to cause permanent hearing damage to unprotected ears, but everyone in a 40 meter radius was either Covenant, or had hearing protection in the form of helmets. Hadrian started with the brutes, followed by the grunts carrying heavy weapons, or jackals with carbines/beam rifles. The Gauss rounds ripped through the covenant energy shielding fairly easily, with the leadership gone, the grunts felt easier to kill. Probably because they were afraid, and panic fighting, and the jackals were more about saving their own skins. Because the BLACK operatives had flanked them, there was no place to really go. The alien forces quickly being dispatched.

Sgt. Michael Covenchik,
Sword Base, 2200 hours,
Reach

The ride down to Sword Base had been an easy one, not that Covenchik would have felt any turbulence as he slept the entire way down. He woke up right as the pelican touched and was dismayed with what he saw. The base itself was in good condition, he just wasn't use to the concrete and steel and on top of that, the unseasonable warmth and humidity meant it rained almost every day. Covenchik exited the pelican and dashed to the entrance, "Fucking rain, fucking building, fucking ONI." He thought as he reached the open doors. A young private greeted him and saluted, this alleviated some of his stress. "At Ease, Private. Now, take me to the Command Center, so ONI can send me to another hell hole." The Private, who at that point was a little intimidated by the hulking Gorilla like man that stood before him, was now scared shitless and didn't delay in taking him to the Command Center. "Dismissed private." The small private immediately ran off and left Covenchik to deal with his superiors.

Booms and the chatter of gunfire emanated from somewhere out of sight, the rest of Eclipse had engaged the incoming Covenant reconnaissance detail backed up by a UNSC Army Group not a few minutes from their very position, however they had problems of their own too, a whole Covenant armor battalion was bearing down on the rest of the Second Army Group and Ilyas, Tucker and Hawkins were the closest friendly units not currently engaged themselves, this put them in the prime position to assist.

“We’re moving to flank Covenant armor. Hawkins, take your team to join up with our new friends. Can’t let the Covenant take out the Cobra.”

Hawkins nodded whilst receiving the transmission and quickly relayed it to Ilyas who was still keeping a keen eye on the city borders.

"Ilyas here. We're less than a click away from Unit Twenty Two, will move to assist. Out" He informed Ethan and prepared the rest of his men to move.

The quickest route to the friendly forces wasn't an easy one mind you, it involved going straight down the sharp decline that hey had been using as an overwatch position, the cliff which was some seventy feet height was the only thing standing in their way. Kicking some dust off the edge and watching it fall, Ilyas motioned for the other two to descend the cliffface and began himself, first swinging both legs over the edge and letting himself down onto a small outcropping, luckily the cliff face was ridden with cracks and gouges providing ample room foot and hand-holds, however lugging half your own body weight round in equipment didn't really help. Shakily but steadily, the trio descended the rockface towards their objective.
Yo, that's mad.

Fatou returned fire on the covenant position. Suddenly, a plasma grenade landed right next to him. Fatou knew what he had to do. He jumped on top of the grenade, making sure the blast didn't kill his comrades. Fatou uttered his last words.

"Au revoir, mon amis. Make sure to kill a few covies for me." Just as he finished his sentence, the grenade went off, killing him instantly. The only thing left of him was his charred robotic arm, which landed a few feet away from Gordon.
