Small Dog Sydrome. Help!!!

Postby James Bluntus » Tue Jan 26, 2010 7:09 pm

I just dog who has Small Dog Sydrome. He is 2 years old. We got him from the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(RSPCA). He wasn't trained right as a pup. Any help in controlling the Sydrome would be helpful.

Thanks.

In my experience its hard to do anything with dogs that you dont get as puppies, you have to get them very young for them to develop the pack mentality in the household...

What is a Sydrome? Is it the pack leader of a pack of Syprey? Kudos to those who get my joke.

I'm not familiar with the RSPCA, but surely they can guide you to some resources/offer you advice on retraining?

Failing that, Googling Small Dog Syndrome turns up a lot of articles.

I had one of those - a six year old 12 pound terrier (my cat was bigger). She walked up to wolf hybrids and trash talked them. I found that she needed a challenge that was up to her intelligence so I enrolled her in obedience school. She was at the top of her class, though she always managed to put her own spin on things.

An adult dog can learn new things. It's just a matter of patience, knowledge and dedication on the part of the owner. The knowledge part is key, that's why, when you enroll your dog in obedience class, you enroll yourself, too. It's worth it to have a happy, well-adjusted dog who knows where he/she stands in the pack. If you're not willing to learn what it takes to teach your dog, you really shouldn't have a dog.

for sure.

as long as the dog is OK around people it can be trained to be a great dog. it takes time and patience and some know-how but its very worth it.

This often happens to small dogs because people forget that they are dogs, treat them like babies or fashion accessories and they turn out like the spoiled brat kid. It can be reversed but it's going to take a lot of work. First off training and resocialization is going to be a big factor in progress. It may be difficult depending on breed and personality because things like Terriers are dominant as are a lot of small dogs. If you don't establish yourself as the dominant being it will walk all over you. You have to set the rules and be firm but never harsh. Start with basic training. If you're in public and somebody wants to pet the dog but you think it may bite there is nothing at all wrong with politly telling the person that the dog is in training. Start with basic training and give it daily exercise. A tired dog is usually not an aggressive dog because it's too tired to be nasty. If you don't know how to train dogs go to classes, which may also help with socialization as the dog will meet other dogs and humans. Good luck and thanks for rescuing.

I constantly challenge my dog to duels, when I win I loudly yell "I am the alpha dog" this helps him realize that he is not the alpha dog

A thousand times, this.

I have a 3 year-old Golden who I sometimes fear wouldn't bite another dog even if it were to attack her. When I take her on walks, I constantly run into people with small dogs who let their dogs growl at her and act aggressive--and sometimes growl at me. It's as if a dog's small size automatically makes unacceptable behavior 'cute'. If I let my 65-pound dog jump all over people and growl at them, there'd probably be complaints filed---but they think it's so cute and silly when their little yappy dogs do it. Then little dogs walk around thinking they're dominant and pick fights.

I've always hated little dogs. They're too energetic, and most people let them be annoying. Although its often that I come across an intimidating medium sized dog that growls at you. Big dogs are almost always nice- usually because they might kill their owner otherwise.

I hate how many owners let them just wander about, because they're not likely to kill anyone. There's a mangy little dachshund missing an eye on our street, and if it's out when I walk my dog by it will follow us for two blocks sometimes, barking and growling. I thought I was going to have to kick it once.

Terriers are bred to be ... assertive. This means that they, just as much as much larger dogs, must be trained.

When I first got her, my terrier, Domina (we called her Dumb Dog because she had what I called the "terrier stupid gene" i.e. - she feared nothing, not even Rotweilers) would bounce up to anything that moved (including cars) in an extremely confrontational manner. This was helpful when someone tried to break into my apartment one night, but on a day to day basis it was detrimental. Fortunately, it only took a good obedience course and consistency to put her on track. The problem is, most people don't think small dogs need obedience classes because they're small.
