Slave technology was invented in 2042 as part of a secret project headed by Dr. Steven Hermann at Bondman Biolabs. Project 8425, eventually titled "Diligent David", or "Dave" in short, based on the name of the first "succesful" subject, sought to use genetic and developmental engineering to create a more inexpensive alternative to worker droids. In 2067, following an extensive IRS investigation into several private biomedical research companies, Bondman Biolabs' secret ventures were discovered, leading to massive public outrage and the subsequent legal action against and closing of the corporation. Dr. Steven Hermann in particular was sentenced to death after being proven guilty of 12 counts of murder, 46 counts of conspiracy to murder and 128 counts of torture. His assistant, Dr. Julie Grey was also sentenced to life in prison for similar offences, but they both remained on death row for decades following lengthy appeals.
Almost thirty years later, the Droid Bubble, which saw automation rates and droid performance soar, imploded. The booming economy that the Droid Bubble itself had started simply couldn't be sustained by these new robots which turned out too unreliable and expensive in the end. On the other hand, humans couldn't match them in working capacity. It was thought that droids were the solution to everything, but this could not have been further from the truth. Going with the wave, businesses had simply scrapped their older, more reliable robots or let them to rust in their backrooms or warehouses. Now, almost all of a sudden, people found themselves jobless as the droids failed and bills to repair them piled. In order to be able to pay them, companies pushed further for even more complex droids capable of replacing humans in higher level jobs. All of this crumbled upon itself on April 4th, 2094. Stock values of the biggest droid manufacturers and users, businesses which had been at the core of the economic boom, plummeted. It was the worst crisis of the century. Literally.
From the ashes of this disaster, new radical political movements emerged. The leading party, dubbed the "Realists' Party" slowly but surely garnered more and more support as life was getting harsher. Their agenda included using slave technology as a remedy to the downfall of the droids. Initially highly unpopular, this was eventually chosen over austerity by most citizens. By 2094 the Realists and associated radical parties had achieved a majority in Congress and 2095 marked the year the first Realist president was elected. With this newly found power the Realists delivered on their original promise and legalized slave technology.
In 2099, Dr. Steven Hermann, then 87 years old, was released along with Dr. Julie Gray after being pardoned by the newly elected president with approval from Congress. With living conditions worsening day by day, work was fully underway to get slave technology up and running for mass deployment. In two years time the first "prototypes" were to be finished, using the new so-called "Accelerated Development" technique hastily developed by Hermann following his release from prison.
Upon hearing of these new developments, David, the "original slave", now incarcerated for a double murder at Littlewood Mental Treatment and Secure Detention Facility, also known as "Oklahoma Loonymax" sets out to kill Hermann and remaining staff from Project 8425, and to stop the development and employment of slave technology. David manages to escape the facility amid the chaos caused by a prison riot, during which he murders an undetermined number of fellow inmates. Suffering from extreme PTSD and flashbacks along with a number of other mental illnesses, he is violent and very unpredictable. Now on the run, he seeks vengeance and justice for his tortured childhood.
