Conlangery, anyone?

Postby Claanyad » Thu May 07, 2015 5:43 am

Okay, so I'd imagine this has been brought up at some point, but I wanted to know how many NS'ers conlang or use conlangs.

For those of you who know me, you should be pretty sure that I conlang a lot - my nation was based around my conlang, I use it pretty much in every RP I can get into, and I think it's kinda cool. But I know that I'm not the only one who conlangs.

If anyone doesn't know, Conlangery is the act of creating a language, whether that be a relex, where you keep the grammar of another language and change a few words, an artlang, which is created for a work of art (like my Conlang, Clányan) or an auxlang (short for International Auxiliary Language) which attempts to replace, augment or bridge the gap between the natural languages of Earth (like Esperanto).

So, from looking around many threads, I have seen a lot of Conlangs of all shapes and sizes. A number of relexes, but that is to be expected, since they are easier to replicate and produce, a few artlangs, and a number of people using auxlangs, like Esperanto.

So, NS - how many of you knew about conlangs? How many of you use them? How many of you have made your own? What do you think of your conlang, or conlangs in general?

Discuss!

EDIT: Not sure now whether it should be in A&F... Will leave that up to a mod.

I have a conlang as an official language of my RP nation, namely Caugish.

It's a work-in-progress, really. It's a Germanic language, with some Gaelic influences. I'm not sure whether it'd count as a relex or an artlang; it shares the same basic grammar rules as most Germanic languages, although I have tried to add atypical features (especially the number system which makes no sense).

I'm kind of doing one. Sort of. It's called High Aerion, which is a horrible jumbled mess of Italian, French, Spanish and Latin words with silly spellings, all pronounced in Classical Latin with something vaguely resembling English sentence structure. All written down on paper at the moment, because there's no way it's going in a factbook in its current state. I'll get it sorted when I have more time. Maybe.

I had several nations here, many of which employed conlangs (more accurately, those nations were created for the conlangs). As Thervingia, I'm trying to revive the Gothic language, or at least create enough words for it to work as a modern language. Obviously I do not create words ex nihilo, but combine already existing roots (alawitiboks "encyclopedia," from ala + witi + boks, which literally means all-knowledge-book), derive words from Proto-Germanic (hrabns "raven" from PG *hrabnaz), or semantically shift existing words into other meaning, using other Germanic languages as an inspiration for calques and possible-logical shifts.

Stairnarehsns "galaxy" is a good example, seeing as rehsns "system," (stairno means "star," obviously) is a back-formation from garehsns "plan, design."

This form of conlangery is less conlanging and more using an existing language and tinkering with it - essentially what modern Hebrew is. Don't think we can call MH a conlang.

I enjoyed this sort of thing for awhile. A Speech professor challenged us to design a language for convenience in space communications, such as from a moon base to an orbiting ship. It helped us recognize the bones of language, the skeleton upon which the rest is formed.

But for long term use it was awkward.

I use English in my RPs for the most part for clarity, as I prefer to write my fiction in English and write with mostly English speakers. However, the inherent understanding is that characters from my nation use a form of Afrikaans where communicating with each other. The Afrikaans I use is based partly on Griqua Afrikaans, which I've been enthralled with for several years now. It is a dialect of the Northern Cape that uses the same sounds and grammatical rules but shares nothing else in common with "mainstream" Afrikaans. As my own grasp of this creole is somewhat limited its usage is restricted to a handful of individual expressions I've inherited.

Not that I RP, but I play around with conlangs, mostly artlang and relex.

When writing I sometimes try to figure out the language my characters are 'actually' speaking to get a handle on the nuances and how I'm translating them.

What do you think about the conlang i'm developing?.

Here are the WIP grammar book and dictionary.

What i'm going to add are the noun declinations into three genders (male, female, neutral), and the formations of verbs. Ghovatstani is an agglutinative language like Finnish or Japanese.

In this spoiler are some brands and famous logos translated into Ghovatstani.

I doubt anyone cares, but I might as well dump it here.

I've translated a favourite song of mine, Wild Autumn Wind by Caladan Brood, into a conlang of mine (a Germanic conlang with Polish sound changes).

English: Across the plains come drifts of sand
From graves of water and tombs of man
The hollow weight of history
Desiccated and blowing free

In the wake, all is dust

The bones of beasts and the bones of kings
Become dust in the wake of the hymn
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall
No more than a breath on the wind

Spectres and gods adrift in the wild, mournful wind
Vast cycles unfold across the span of æons
Colossal keeps consumed and left as burial mounds
And even stars will fade into empyrean shrouds

In ashen vaults, on parchment scrolls
The echoed verses state soft the toll

In the wake, all is dust

Vast desolation
Silent grave of æons

Revenants watch from cold cosmic towers
Glimmering eyes of jade bear final witness

Temples crumble as the great wheel turns
Ground to dust
Monuments and megaliths unnamed
Fall the same
Earth and sky enrobed in deathless void
Endless night
Worm of Autumn claims its final throne

The bones of beasts and the bones of kings
Become dust in the wake of the hymn
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall
No more than a breath on the wind
Hail Oblivion

My conlang is basically Proto-Indo-European with some shifted sound values.

Thoman is a relex. The grammar is Latin with bells and whistles, the word endings are agglutanive. The vocab, I made up.

I'm creating one that is currently unnamed. It's an attempt at a personal ideal language. I am also working on a couple others. One is a language designed to sound pleasant without being my "ideal" one and the other is basically a fusional sisterlang to Japanese.

I am also trying to create a such a thing but it was not so easy. My work is still in progress. Along with this i am doing my duties as a professional writer also. It is very interesting to create a new language and i am trying my level best for this.
