Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Deadwood? You mean the show that's not broadcast for free over the airwaves and is in fact on a pay-premium service?

Uh...no. Sorry, but that's not a good enough reason for the FCC, a body accountable to and appointed by the Executive Branch and not the people of the United States, to decide that the PUBLIC airwaves are somehow NOT subject to the free speech provision of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.

Oh, but then won't the ever-precious, ever-omniscient "free market" allow those who don't think cussing is funny to...wait for it...change the channel? Or better yet, turn it off entirely?

I don't understand the Puritan side of conservatism and how it tap-dances around its unabashed love for capitalism.

There was finely tuned hypocrisy too, such as cramming women into those ridiculous bullet bras that made them look like Wonder Woman and then making sure that her provocatively sculpted chest was demurely covered.

FCC, shmFCC. They are chickens. In South Korea, we censor nearly everything, and the internet is next in line. (Although wads of cash do help when getting lower age ratings.)

Personally, I think a program that contains graphic language or violence should be preceded by a warning, and a small ratings symbol should appear in the lower corner during the program for anybody who is just tuning in. Beyond that, it's up to the viewer to control what channel they watch, and it's up to parents to monitor their children.

Putting a warning there still requires one central rating instance. This still has a single point of failure or at least of bias. Would it be so bad if liberals would look on the site of a liberal rating group and fundamentalists on a site of fundamentalists?

Having a central rating is much better than having people trying to censor TV for no reason.

I too absolutely loathe the FCC. People, you are not 5 year olds. If you don't like what's on the tv or radio, turn the channel away. Monitor what your kids are into, and you can use the censorship technology provided in most tvs to further control that if you don't trust them. Stop making the rest of society cater to your desire for a puritanical society that refuses to trust its members as mature, well formed people.

Only really good if at least one parent doesn't have a proper, 9-5 type job. Otherwise this isn't going to happen.

As I said, there're some obnoxiously good filter programs and controls for tvs. You can enable both the tv *and* cable box these days to censor, with a password you create. If your kid gets around your password, perhaps creativity is called for beyond "0000" or a birthday. Beyond that, it's up to you to point out to your children what you object to and why. It annoys me when children tell their kids "VIDEO GAMES ARE BAD" or "YOU CAN'T WATCH THAT SHOW, IT'S BAD" instead of saying, "remember how I told you x about z? I don't like it because of, q, x, r, e and p reasons."
Life is mine to give and take; death is my bailiwick. I freely go where angels dare not tread, and have danced blades with the demons that lurk in your darkest nightmares.
