Powers of the World 2035 (OOC & Signups)

Postby Skappola » Sat Jan 03, 2015 1:19 pm

World Powers Circa 2035:

The year is 2035, and the world is a veritable mess. Throughout the world, large mega-nations have formed, all in direct competition with one another. After the Great Depression of the 2020s, the EU is close to collapse, with the competing Scandinavian Confederation and Commonwealth of Independent States both threatening to snatch land from the former world power. In the Americas, three world powers - the United States of the North Atlantic, the South American Federation, and Brazil - have arisen. Faced with the threat of war, the Panama demilitarized zone has been created to protect trade within the Americas in such a crisis. In Asia, the South Asian Commonwealth and People's Republic of China fight for the remaining independent Southeast Asian nations, while the Pacific Alliance attempts to shore up its defenses in Malaysia in fear of an invasion from the North. The Middle East has been split between the Sunni Brotherhood and the Shia Islamic Republic of Iran, with tensions rising along the Iraqi border. The African Union faces an impending Communist revolution in the North and a hostile invasion from the South. Iran and the Commonwealth of Independent nations have left the UN after the controversial Scandinavian invasion of Karelia.

How did this happen? The histories of each nation can be found below in the spoilers. The tech level is slightly more advanced than 2015. Advanced Robotics are beginning to become available in richer countries such as the USNA, while drones and computer controlled weaponry are in widespread use on the battlefield. You can play as any of the major and minor holdout powers (Including Israel, and Taiwan), or you can play as a rebel insurgency. Note that if you do choose either a minor power or rebel insurgency, you'll have to be well aware of the limits of your nation/organization. The locations of most of the powers are self explanatory, except the Commonwealth of Independent States, which is Russia+its allies.

Countries
History: Once one of the foremost military, political, and economic powers of the world, the EU has fallen from its previous glory. During the late 2010s and early 2020s, the EU's economy had been experience a great bubble akin to that of the 1920's. Many warned it could not last, but many more didn't listen. During this period, many new members joined the EU, including the former Yugoslav republics and Norway, hoping to benefit from the spectacular economic conditions. In January of 2023, the bubble popped. The EU, having benefited the most from the bubble, was hit obscenely hard. Stocks collapsed throughout the continent, a quarter of the banks failed, and the EU's GDP fell an astonishing 50%. Bumbling attempts to rebuild the economy simply worsened the situation, and much of Europe was downgraded to developing and emerging economies by the end of the year. GDP per capita plummeted from $36,000 down to $17,600, and many states faced unemployment rates upwards of 25%. In the Summer of 2025, the EU forced out one of its poorest states, Greece, which at that point had come to resemble Africa more than Europe in wealth. This was a highly controversial decision and caused yet another surge in EU skepticism (Which was a massive movement after the Depression). In 2026, the EU passed extremely strict regulations on the newly formed Republic of Scotland, the UK, and Norway regarding the use of their large oil reserves, in a last ditch attempt to get out of debt. This was their last straw and in 2027, Norway, Scotland, and the UK seceded. In 2028, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, and Lithuania had followed suit, eventually forming the Confederation of Scandinavia with Scotland, Norway, and Iceland - their replacement for the EU. This was another major blow to the EU's economy, and started a second recession within the depression. In 2030, the Tirana Marxist League gained control of Albania, promising a new start for their country. By 2031, the revolution had spread to Macedonia and northern Greece, and was proving to much for the local authorities to handle. In 2032, the Tirana Marxist League officially seceded from the EU to form the People's Republic of Tirana. In 2033, to stem to tide of seceding nations and to unify Europe's economic policy (And to Hopefully appear stronger to their neighbors), the EU passed the Milan Accords, forming the centralized State of Europe we see today.

Military: Despite their basket-case economy, the EU maintains a very advanced military, the fourth most advanced today. Their navy is the pride of Europe, and their air-force is also nothing to joke about.

Economy: As said before, Europe is currently in a recession within a depression. The economy is a complete basket-case. Some say it is because of corruption, others because of bureaucracy. Some say the minimum wage should be lowered, others say it should be higher. However, everyone agrees that something must be done.

Government: The EU is no longer a decentralized forum, but now is a federal republic capable (More or less) of conducting its business on a national scale without having to consult each and every state. Its bureaucracy, however, remains byzantine, corrupt, and generally inefficient. The country is gerrymandered to hell and back, and the politicians are unwilling to give up any power. Lines have been drawn Politically, geographically, historically, and just about any other way they can be drawn, resulting in some of the most partisan politicians the world has ever seen. Many agree that it is this government which is holding the EU back, but no one can agree how to fix it.

History: The United States continued its steady growth through the EU economic boom with only moderate gains. During, it wasn't nearly as affected as many other countries. It fell into a recession akin to the 2008 recession which, while bad, was relatively good for developed country. Still, the Republican administration in power was blamed regardless for the recession and its bailouts of major banks, which was as unpopular as in the 2008 recession. A Democratic president was soon elected in 2024, promising a speedy recovery. In 2025, NAFTA was (controversially) expanded, further integrating and expanding the North American economy. Though it's arguable whether this actually helped the economy, the US nonetheless quickly recovered and its GDP was expanding at 6.5% by 2026. Also in 2026, the UK and much of Central America joined NAFTA, now the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement. Now extremely popular by a large margin, the Democratic administration introduced a new "Future of Stability" Initiative, promising a stable and prosperous economy through increased economic integration. In 2028, the North Atlantic Union was created, as part of the Future of Stability. This Union expanded at a very fast rate, even including Cuba, the government of which was recently overthrown in a (Possibly US-supported) coup. In response to the recent centralization of the EU, the North Atlantic Union passed the Stable Centralization Bill of 2034, forming the United States of the North Atlantic (USNA).

Military: The USNA is the first and foremost military power of the world, leading with a truly massive navy and highly skilled and advanced army. It spends a massive amount of money on its military, often stoked by fears of the growing power of China and South America.

Economy: The USNA, though lacking the sole superpower status of its American predecessor, has the second largest economy of the world, only behind China. The recent introduction of new "smartrobots" for factory automation has begun to bring back jobs lost to outsourcing. Unfortunately, its Southern Half is significantly poorer than its Northern half, and inequality is at extremely high levels. This is only exacerbated by the recent "Language Zone Law", which restricts those of the Spanish language to the South Half (Unless English is learned) and those of the English language to the North (Unless Spanish is learned). This was a desperate attempt at restricting immigration north, but is often cited as violating freedom of movement.

Politically: The USNA is one of the more inefficient states of the world. It remains mired in partisan-ship to an almost extreme extent at times, and its government will periodically shut down due to minor arguments. It runs on a semi-presidential system, holding both a president and prime minister. However, for all intents and purposes, the president is the one in charge, while the prime minister is no more powerful than a speaker of the house.

History: Upon witnessing the explosive growth of the US's economy combined with a worryingly expansionist president, numerous South American States - Argentina and Chile in particular - introduced a new unified militaries agenda. The agenda was focused towards expanding the South American Union's defensive strength through establishing a single, unified military structure for all of South America. This was overwhelmingly successful, even allowing for the recapture of the Falklands for a short time (much to the chagrin of the North Atlantic Union). Between 2027-2033, the Union went through numerous centralizing efforts of varying success. In 2030, the Unification Bill was passed, declaring South America as a single, sovereign Federation of States. Brazil, Columbia, and Uruguay broke off soon afterwards, beginning the great civil war. Using its large military, the Federation was able to recapture Uruguay and Colombia, but was unable to retrieve Brazil from the hands of the secessionists.

Economy: Developing economy with certain states - such as Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile - at the threshold of becoming developed. Extreme inequality problem - one of the largest in the world.

Military: Large military for country of its size, though not spectacularly advanced.

History: Brazil has always considered itself independent from the rest of South America, but never more so when the Unification Bill was passed in 2023. The idea of unification with nations so culturally different combined with the refusal to recognize Portuguese as an official language was too much for the Brazilian people to handle. Facing the dissolution of their military in favour weaker, more centralized model by the Unification Bill, secession was quickly declared a mere week after the Bill was passed. This began the Great Civil War, one of the most bloody wars the world had ever seen. Brazil was greatly outnumbered by their heavily militarized neighbors, but through the use of guerrilla warfare and support from the USNA, Brazil snatched victory from the hands of defeat. Brazil now faces a difficult future, surrounded by powerful enemies and few allies the cold world of 2035.

Economy: Not fully a developed nation, but very strong nonetheless. However, much of its infrastructure has been destroyed in the recent civil war, prompting massive rebuilding projects and debt.

Military: Decent sized military for a country of its size, though rapidly building it up in response to a hostile neighbor.

History: Founded by Norway, Sweden, and Denmark in 2027, the Scandinavian Confederation quickly grew in size to encompass the baltics, Finland, Iceland, and Scotland. This expansion would have continued to even begin encompassing areas such as Poland and the Netherlands if it weren't for the essential ban on secession which the EU desperately passed, leading up to their eventual centralization. In 2031, a war broke out between Russia and Finland once again over Karelia. Using advanced weaponry from the USNA and soldiers from throughout the Confederation and the EU, the Scandinavian Confederation built an impressive invasion force. This invasion force crushed Russia in a humiliating defeat, capturing not only Karelia but also St. Petersburg and surrounding areas. Scandinavian Confederation remains relatively decentralized, which in many cases works for this nationstate. However, if it seeks to become a world power, centralization may be needed.

Economy: Holds one of the highest GDPPCs in the world. This is primarily due to its rich North Sea Oil Reserves and low population.

Military: Advanced but very small military.

History: The Commonwealth of Independent States had existed for years 2035, but was often overshadowed by its wealthier neighbors in the EU. Upon the collapse of the EU economy, the Commonwealth was able to come onto the world stage as a major world powed. Well, not entirely since its economy collapsed with EU's. The loss of St. Petersburg to the upstart Scandinavian Confederation wasn't great for morale or consumer confidence either. During the war with the Scandinavian Confederation, the Commonwealth left the UN, after all attempts to condemn its attackers was vetoed by the US and Britain. Despite these setbacks, the Commonwealth, lead primarily by Russia, has greatly centralized its power, primarily around Moscow. Whether Russia's gambit in uniting in its poorer neighbors through a Commonwealth will pay off is still up in the air, but Russia's leadership remains optimistic through it all.

Economy: Currently going through an economic Malaise, not nearly as bad as its European Union neighbors. Harbors a burgeoning manufacturing industry, but still relies on the natural resources of Russia for much of its economy.

Military: Was considered one of the more advanced military in the world before being beaten up by the Scandinavians. Still, their military is quite large and nothing to laugh at. It also holds a significant nuclear reserve as a last resort.

History: The Islamic Republic of Iran hit it rich in 2019 with the discovery of a large new oil reserve in the northern half of the country. Iran immediately used this funding to fight back against the growing Sunni Muslim movements of the world, even hoping to spread Shi'a Islam to its neighbors. It funded a number of questionable organizations, the most successful of which - The Pakistani People's Army - began to take control of Kashmir and the mountains of Afghanistan, from where it launched attacks in Pakistan. By 2023, it had gained control of Northern Pakistan and much of Afghanistan. Iran flooded the organization with money and advanced weaponry, allowing it to take full control of both Pakistan and Afghanistan by 2027. They then signed the Treaty of Tehran, officially merging the two nations to form the (Shia) Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Needless to say, this raised many eyebrows, but much of the world was too busy dealing with their own stability and economic problems to get overly involved. In 2028, the UN created a peacekeeping force to protect the Sunni Muslim majority from the Shia minority, which was widely believed to be an oppressive force. Iran left the UN altogether shortly thereafter along with Russia and its commonwealth.

Economy: Iran's economy is still heavily dependent on Oil, but is quickly growing into a modernized manufacturing-based economy in cities like Tehran.

Military: Its military is outdated for the time period, but also quite large. It remains a major regional power through its military and keeps its Eastern provinces in line.

History: The Brotherhood is the result of a major movement spurred on by an offshoot of the Muslim brotherhood - the Sunni Brotherhood. It began in 2018, with large-scale protests in democratic Tunisia, eventually spreading to Egypt, Morroco, Lebanon, and the UAE, among others. Saudi Arabia fully supported these protests, being a highly religious state itself, and began funding the organization. By 2020 the Sunni Brotherhood held the majority in numerous Democratic nations in the Middle East, and had even overthrown the government of yemen to establish a theocracy. In 2023, Sunni Brotherhood controlled Egypt, Lebanon, Tunia, Yemen, and Morroco united to form a nation of the Sunni Brotherhood. Numerous other nations soon joined in, eventually forming a great nation reminiscent of the Arab Empire.

Economy: Has an extremely varied economy, ranging from Oil dependent states to Manfacturing-based economies, to developed information-based economies.

Military: Not the most advanced military in the world, but is both large and filled with religious fervor and patriotism for their new state.

History: The South Asian Commonwealth is the result of India's recent expansion with very questionable intentions. Most of the expansions have been under the guise of "humanitarian aid" and "Stability" such as the invasion of Burma in 2019 to "End the Civil War", but most see through these thinly veiled excuses. Still, most nations are unable to do anything, due to India's position as a major manufacturing capital. Through these excuses, India has taken Nepal to "Provide cultural and religious integration" in 2021, Bangladesh to "Provide Humanitarian Aid and Stability in light of the recent flooding and Monsoon" in 2024, and finally Bhutan in 2026 to "Defend against terrorist groups hiding within the mountains". This has caused quite a bit of tension with its neighbors, but India has been able to keep relations warm enough to avoid debilitating sanctions or war.

Economy: Poor nation, with Manufacturing-based economy. Competes closely with China economically and maintains a large agricultural sector.

Military: Mid-sized military of a relatively advanced level. Due to decentralized nature of India's military Corp, it is difficult for India to organize efficient invasion campaigns between its Navy, Airforce, and Army.

History: One of the newest nations on Earth, the Pacific Alliance formed between Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guniea as a defensive alliance in 2024 against increasingly aggressive powers to the North. This alliance quickly expanded to include Japan in 2026, South Korea in 2028, Indonesia in 2032, and numerous small Pacific Island nations between 2031-2034. Tosay, the Pacific Alliance maintains close relations with the USNA, with cold relations towards China and South Asia.

Economy: Surprisingly strong economy for such a small nation. Includes multiple developed nations and a large amount of manufacturing manpower from Indonesia.

Military: Heavily Navy-based with a strong Air Force for support.

History: The People's Republic of China is one of the few nations on Earth to not have changed its name, a supposed symbol of its unity as a people. China remained a Communist state during the period between 2014-2035, and a surprisingly stable one at that. Many of its Eastern coastal states are compared to developed nations today, though its Western states remain poor and of questionable stability. In 2023, China "peacefully" integrated its Southern sister nation of Vietnam through a peaceful trade treaty which did not have anything to do with naval facilities and a carrier being built in the area. The government of China promises to keep Vietnam autonomous, for they are China's brethren and must be treated well. In 2032, China restored stability to its Northern neighbor, Mongolia, which was undergoing a civil war at the time. To restore long-term stability, the decision was made to fully integrate Mongolia into the Democratic Republic. The CCP assures the world that these integrations are not part of an attempt at expansion, but instead as a way to provide cultural and economic integration in the region through stability and prosperity.

Economy: China maintains a booming manufacturing economy with a burgeoning information-based economy in its Eastern Coastal States.

Military: One of the largest and most advanced militaries in the world, often directly competing with the USNA.

History: The African Union began centralizing efforts in 2024 as part of an attempt to increase competetiveness economically while providing stability to its infamously unstable member states. This would have been successful, if two major factions didn't appear at the time. In the South, South Africa broke off, believing it would have to prop up the poorer nations of central Africa. Along with South Africa came a series of states in the South, which were undergoing a sort of economic renaissance. They eventually formed their own federation, believing it could become a major trade bloc of its own. In West Africa, a major Communist movement arose around Sierra Leone, eventually spreading to much of West Africa. The newly socialist and communist states of West Africa broke off and formed their own People's Union of West Africa in 2027. Now, only the Central and Eastern African states remain.

Economy: Very poor citizenry with poor economic development. Most development is centered around growing coastal states like Equatorial Guinea, where oil is rich.

Military: Outdated military, but holds massive amounts of manpower which could be used to the country's advantage.

History:
History: Formed by the richer Southern African States during the attempted formation of a unified Subsaharan africa, the Federation of South Africa is the richest of the 3 African Unions. Built around a centralized Federal Republic, the Federation is also one of the most efficient governments of Africa, and often cited as a future economic powerhouse.

Economy: Large gem mines and oil reserves provide funding for the burgeoning nation, while a burgeoning manufacturing sector in the south provides a future for the nation.

Military: Outdated Military with smaller manpower than its northern neighbors.

History: Formed by a booming Communist movement in 2027, the People's Union of West Africa has been facing many economic and social problem throughout the last couple years. Fights between the Muslim and Christian populations have become common, and many say that progress towards establishing a Communist state is not going nearly fast enough. However, many of the states are too afraid to leave the Union. In 2028, Liberia broke off from the Union, but was quickly subdued by the expansive military of West Africa. Tensions remain high in the People's Union.

Economy: Poor economy made worse due to the Communist revolution scaring away investors. Still heavily agriculturally based.

Military: Outdated but large and aggressive,

History: Forced out of the EU due to its basketcase economy, Greece is barely holding on. Its government is desperately trying to entice foreign investors to its shores, but to no avail. To the North is a major Communist revolution, currently hinting at an aggressive invasion. To its South is an aggressive Sunni Brotherhood which has also hinted at an invasion.

Economy: Terrible. Basketcase. Hell. These all describe Greece's economy.

Military: Barely functional.

History: Led by the "spiritual successor" to Tito, the Marxist League of Tirana quickly gained power in Albania, eventually also taking control of Macedonia and numerous Northern counties of Greece. Now the People's Republic of Tirana, the official government newsletter is beginning to hint at a possible aggressive invasion of Greece to the South.

Economy: Stagnant and looking worse every day.

Military: Large, primitive, and patriotic.

-The descriptions of each nations military and economy I provided are meant as an outline for the RPers, and not at all set in stone. You can change what you want, as long as it doesn't completely change the history.
- If multiple people reserve a nation before I can accept one, I will accept who I think would be better suited to the position rather than who was first.
-If multiple people submit apps for an unreserved nation without reserving it first, I will accept the one I think is better
-You might have noticed I've beefed up the EU and USNA descriptions more than the others. This is because they are rather major world players and are integral to the events leading up to this.
-I'm not playing as a nation, but will be in control of international events and disasters (For which I have an entire system set up)
-Switzerland is reserved & the host of the UN
-IC will be created when I get enough Apps
-You can create your own insurgency groups/minor nations. Just don't godmode with them and if you do lose, lose with dignity.

Rules:
-Don't Godmode, Flame, etc.
-Nuclear Strikes have to be approved by Me or the Klishi Islands.
-No one liners in IC posts
-Lose with dignity and Win with dignity. Don't make up ridiculous things to avoid defeat. You are going to lose major battles, like in any real war.

The United Federations wrote:Country: United States of the North Atlantic
Capitol: New York City, New York
Leader: President Robert Venor
Description of Government: The government of the USNA consists of three branches, Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. The executive is led by a chief executive, the President, his Vice President, and his cabinet. This executive branch is rarely viewed though, as it is left in charge of military and foreign matters more so than the Parliament. The legislature consists of a parliamentary system blended with a two house congress, with a House of Representatives and a Senate, with the head of the Parliament being the Prime Minister, the third in the chain of command after the vice president for presidency. With the recent continued partisanship in the nation, the Prime Minister has become the focus of the attention of what gets passed or what causes the government to fail to operate, as the president is left out of much of the politics in the legislative branch. The judiciary still consists of the Supreme Court with a membership of 15 Justices, led by a Chief Justice chosen by the President and approved by Parliament. The Parliament is split nearly down the middle on two widening sides of both right and left wing radicals, with the Prime Minister currently being a conservative, while the President is a moderate attempting to find a balance to ensure the government operates.
Population: 564,239,430
Foreign Policy: The goals of the USNA are to maintain a global balance of power, consisting of both addressing the rising threats in the south and to the east with the Chinese and South American Federation.
Civil Freedoms (/10): 7/10
Political Freedoms (/10): 9/10
Description of Economy: The economy has been recovering from the two recessions it fell into in the last few decades, although using its ingenuity and development of high level robotic systems the USNA has become the second largest producer in the world, with only China and its massive human resources ahead. The economy itself has been steadily growing, despite the unemployment rate hovering around 10 percent due to the lack of manufacturing jobs available to people with the automation of many industries. The government has considered taking on a program establishing stronger pay for those who enlist in the armed forces, although it has continued to be stalled in Parliament by its radical split. Energy and fuel has shifted primarily from crude fossil fuels to nuclear energy with the development of 4th Generation and 5th Generation nuclear reactors, as well as the new prototype systems of fusion power plants developed in the mid 2020's by the former company Lockheed Martin before its merger into Boeing with its renaming of Boeing Resilient.
Description of Military: The military consists of an exceptionally powerful and technologically advanced armed ground forces, as well as having the most advanced navy and air force in the world. After years of integrating the military forces of the USNA, it has finally begun to streamline its forces. After the merger, most old equipment has been retired due to lack of effectiveness in the modern world, so the military established Operation: Overhaul, which streamlined the ground forces of the USNA to maintain the same vehicles across the board, as well as weapons, ammo, and troop equipment. The navy consists of multiple fleets, consisting of 12 supercarriers, 8 Nimitz-class and 4 Gerald R. Ford-class carriers, which are used to project their power across the international playing field and deter any forces that may attempt to threaten the USNA. The remaining nuclear stockpile of the USNA is still maintained and split between the SLBMs and the ICBMs under the control of NORAD, although would most likely not be used with the near completion of the SLAMS Nuclear Defense Initiative.
Immediate goal of the nation: To maintain the balance between the global powers, complete the SLAMS Nuclear Defense Initiative project, completely unify the North American continent under the direct rule of the USNA, and to ensure that the security of the nation from foreign influences and military powers.

Country: European Union
Capitol: Currently Berlin, however the center of power oft shifts with the election of a new Head of State.
Leader: Benjamin Hiss (Head of State), Pritchard Blanc (Head of Government)
Description of Government: Put quite simply, a mess. Officially the Milan Accords were intended to consolidate all governmental powers into one unified body, however the haste in which they were written allowed for many a gap in letter. Due to this the government in actuality functions more as it had previously, many semi independent representations engaging in nothing but talk while powerless leaders are elected into position on the promise of change and kicked out after finding their change hungry charges immutable, the principal differences existing primarily in the structure of higher government. While lacking in the political clout to properly enforce itself upon its minor bodies, by all standards any position above that of single state affairs tends to experience a relatively well designed government structure. This fact has been lost on many, as this more efficient government has shifted from place to place as the keys to the nation passed hands from one nationality to another, and in doing so has been unable to take root and truly begin to consolidate power.
Structure: EU government can be roughly derived into three groups. Higher government, which acts more as the face of the EU, appearing as the governing body while currently lacking the ability to fully enforce itself; presided over by the Head of State. Middle Government, a sort of parliamentary system where elected officials represent their electorate(most often taking the form of former nations); presided over by Head of Government. And finally, Lower government, the residual remains of what were the governments of each nation; still vastly influential over their former territories, these vestiges of former leadership act as the primary barrier to a truly unified European platform.
Population: 528,760,000
Foreign Policy: To retain an open political forum with all nations and smooth the formation of a Standardized Global Economy.
Civil Freedoms (/10): 7
Political Freedoms (/10): 7
Description of Economy: 12 years of recession, setbacks, secession, and the odd revolution have left the EU a shell of the economic power it once was. For better or for worse, the lack of a uniform political body of strength has, aside from a few surgically empowered blunders in broad policy, left the remnants of former national governments largely in charge of local efforts to stem the tide of the economic downturn; the general inability to do so aside, has ultimately resulted in an uneven distribution of where the burden falls, leaving some bodies better off then others. Former Italy, Romania, and Ireland taking a sizable brunt of the depression; and former France, Germany, and Ukraine experiencing a significantly lighter hit. Energy policy remains mixed, but even with a largely fossil fuel derived energy economy there exist areas of nuclear and renewable energy, primarily the former France as a largely nuclear powered nation.
Description of Military: Despite the lack of cohesion between the former nations of the EU, one of the few constants that unites many politicians across the board would most certainly be the desire to retain the military security of the past. While not quite up to snuff as compared to their history or to the greater forces of the day, the EU has kept a fairly well equipped and maintained military.
Active Personnel: 1,436,700
Total Naval Craft: 532 [Supercarrier: 3, Conventional Carrier: 2, Amphibious support craft: 18, Destroyer: 20, Frigate: 95, Corvette: 40, Patrol craft: 150, Mine countermeasures vessel: 125, Attack Sub: 30, Ballistic Missile Sub: 9, Support Craft: 40]
Total Land forces: Approximately 6,500 Battle Tanks, 15,000 Armored Vehicles, 10,000 Artillary Units, 1,000 Military Helicopter Units
Total Air Craft: 1,970 [Exact demographics undetermined as older craft are retired and some forces held in retention by former state governments]
Nuclear Weapons: Of all EU nations, France was the only to posses Nuclear Arms of its own make, holding approximately 300 warheads of variable yield. States Belgium, Germany, Italy, Turkey, and the Netherlands are in possession of a total approximating 150 to 200 Nuclear Warheads of US make. These warheads, shared under NATO Nuclear Sharing policy, are equipped with Permissive Action Link Security, requiring an activation code held by the US to be made active in their given state. Despite this, experts have long stated that with french cooperation it would not be excessively difficult to repurpose the nuclear fuel into other weapons, if not to make active the warheads held by said states.
Immediate goal of the nation: To revise and streamline bureaucratic processes and implementation of economic policy directed towards a normalization and improvement of State economic affairs.

Foreign Policy:
The machine of capitalist exploitation has long relied on imperialism to keep itself running. These adventures have cost millions of African lives along with a far greater number of those peoples’ our nation has been used as a tool to exploit. The Communist Party stands unequivocally opposed to all imperialist interventions, invasions and actions abroad by our own government and those of other core nations. In addition, because the atom ought to be used as a source of power and life, not a means of coercion and death, we propose unilateral nuclear disarmament. Nuclear arms serve no practical military purpose except to cause unnecessary human suffering.

However, this anti-militarist policy does not mean we desire a nation disinterested in external affairs. We support workers’ and liberation struggles across the globe. Giving aid and supplies to progressive and democratic forces is essential for us to help right the wrongs we have been party to as a nation. Similarly, the centuries of unfair and exploitative trade deals struck by our nation must be reversed. Viewing economics as a zero-sum game has been discredited since the age of Mercantilism. Economic prosperity in one part of the global economy is good for all except those who in our own society currently act as social parasites, benefiting from neo-colonialism. All future trade agreements must be on equal terms with other countries and development aid given which doesn't have crippling neoliberal strings attached. In light of recent outbreaks in Africa, as well as famines across the continent, is has become clear to this Party that the only way to progress as a society is to ensure that all peoples across the world have suitable protections from hunger and disease, thus ensuring that all of humankind can live in suitable and humane conditions.

Description of Economy:
Crisis after crisis besets capitalist economies. These are of course offset by the spoils and investment opportunities afforded by imperialism. But in the post-Cold War state of Ultra-Imperialism, accumulation by dispossession could no longer be limited to the periphery nations. The declining rate of profit has forced capital to seek ever-new areas to colonize leading to financialisation and the rise of fictitious capital. It is far more profitable for capitalists to loot our industry and public services than it is to invest in the creation of real value. Capitalism, an irrational and anarchic mode of production, has become autophagous.

This system is inherently unstable, and we see evidence of this instability through repeated failure and scandal. Consider the 2008 financial crisis, which was precipitated by the sale of toxic mortgage securities being passed off as healthy assets, or the ongoing Libor rate fixing, which has robbed pensioners and municipal governments of billions of pounds. The Libor bubble and gross manipulation of global commodities markets, ongoing under this very government will, when coupled with the many other bubbles in areas like municipal debt and the real estate markets in China and the United States, will likely cause a crisis far worse than that which we experienced in 2008.

As we saw in the recession, capitalist governments are beholden to no one but the capitalist class. Rather than provide assistance to those thrown out of work by the recession, governments bailed out the very thieves who through their mixture of avarice and incompetence, beyond even that which capitalism would by its very nature necessitate, caused the crisis in the first place.

(This piece of the app has been deleted to make space in the OP. Go to the original post to see it)

In order to reverse the decades of plundering by capitalists, all corporations previously owned by the state and natural resources must be immediately renationalised. However, unlike Labour, we will institute democratic management structures led by workers’ councils in these companies.

We also plan to transition all privately-held companies to worker-owned cooperatives managed by workers’ councils. While worker-owned co-ops, just as state-owned companies, are not inherently socialistic, they uniquely contain within themselves the means to promote worker autonomy and are a crucial foundation for the generalization of economic democracy.

Ultimately, we seek a world where wage labour is replaced by associated producers freely deciding on what, how and when they will produce in collaboration with other associations regarding the fulfillment of common social needs.

All inequalities in material provision are to be abolished other than those entailed in the principle of from each according to their capacities and to each according to their needs.

The distinction between necessary labour done for distant others and work undertaken in the reproduction of self, household and commune is gradually erased such that social labour becomes embedded in household and communal work becomes the primary form of unalienated and non-monetised social labour. A world is born where each individual is free to develop their faculties without compulsion to submit themselves to another, are able to find meaning in their work and to fully be able to enjoy the life of the community. This is the meaning of communism.

Description of Military
:we will demobilize all but 30,000 active duty soldiers and 20,000 reserves. On the basis of a socialist planned economy, demobilised soldiers will be rationally reallocated into new careers according to their skills. We condemn military redundancies under capitalism, where bombs are valued before the soldiers sent back to areas of high unemployment.

Additionally, taking the revolutionary Spanish forces, Red Army during the Russian Civil War and EZLN as our model, we will abolish military rank outside of combat. Officers shall be elected delegates from among the soldiers themselves and all soldiers shall be trained in military strategy and be expected to engage in combat if needed. No longer will the rigid caste system which has hampered our military for centuries continue.

Seeking to reduce the size of the military does not mean we Communists are starry-eyed idealists. Instead of a large standing army we will create popular militias. Every able-bodied citizen will be encouraged to train and be prepared to defend their country from counterrevolutionary invasion. Countries like Switzerland and Finland which maintain citizen-armies have been by and large successful at maintaining their independence and sovereignty. Unlike these countries however, we will not subject our people to the rigidity of active military service unless they specifically choose that career. The popular militias will have a similar structure to, and work closely in coordination with, the military but require much less obligation.

Our engagement with a peaceful road to socialism does not negate our commitment and obligation to uphold the self-defence of the working class against attacks by capital, property, and the state. The advocation of working class passivity when confronting a merciless class enemy does not lead to socialism.

Because police forces ultimately serve the owning class and are inimical to the workers we support the creation of community-based organizations for the protection of life, liberty, and possessions of workers and minorities. These groups would act in full accordance with applicable law provided there is no abrogation of democracy or rule-of-law. These organizations would come from local communities and serve at the behest of democratically elected councils.

Immediate goal of the nation: Have the Second election of the Communist Party of West Africa.
Finish nationalization
End the insurgency in Liberia

Description of Government: Heavily decentralized, the government is mostly run by small governships in the different areas, and the people have a huge amount of say, as they pick their representative in the council and can even boot them out. The government is completley Secular, but many traditional views are held in the heavily Christian areas of St. Petersburg and Scotland. In recent years, the government has underwent more centralized, much to the distaste of traditional areas who fear progressive laws will be passed on them.
The Representatives meet in Stockholm to discuss the views the people of their area have, and often have arguements. Whenever a law is put through six of the ten representatives must vote in favor of the law in order for it to go through, and then the people have to vote for the law to pass on their territory, certain obvious laws such as no murdering people and stealing are immediately inforced without question, but others have to pass judgement of the people. Foreign Policy: Nations such as the CIS and EU are very afraid of the Scandinavian Confederation as it poses a threat to their world power status, especially CIS as the Scandinavians recently proved they can deal out a good strike on them. The Scandinavian-CIS border is one of the most guarded on Earth, but the USNA border in the UK is lightly guarded, as the Scandinavians hold good relations with them.

Scandinavia has no intention for war with the EU, but constantly watches to see any signs of incoming attack or war, as the Scandinavians are very eary of their southern neighbor. Countries like the PRC or the South American Federation pose no threat to the Scandinavians, but Scandinavia still watches to see what happens.

Description of Economy: []Extremely Capitalist, with basically no elements of Socialism or Communism whatsoever. Scandinavia uses the "Skand" similar to the EU's Euro. The oil industry is by far the largest in Scandinavia, and they rake in billions every year.
The government holds little control over business, and the GDPPC is very high. The businesses are free to make products as they please as long as they don't promote terrorism or rebellion against the government. Other industries such as gaming and automotive do fairly well, but most have to shipped in from the EU and USNA, due to the lack of factories in Scandinavia.
Description of Military: Scandinavian soldiers receive decent training, and are mostly dug in for a defensive war. They mainly focus on technology over manpower, thus their military is not as good as that of the USNA, EU or PRC. Enlisted men: 100,000 enlisted, 70,000 reserve, 7 million fit for military service. Waztaskio wrote:Rebel/Terrorist group name: Global Enlightenment Army (GEA)

History of group: The Global Enlightenment Army was made in the year 2021 with the goal of spreading hope and offering support in the time of the Great Depression. It was started in the old United States of America with small centers spread around like the Salvation Army, but became global in 2028. They helped the homeless and even recruited them into their ranks, to help others quickly boosting their membership to 400,000 worldwide by 2030. It was started by a man named James Reynolds from the Bronx New York, but due to the countries breaking apart and integrating into new super-states, he moves the Head-Quarters of the agency to Switzerland. As the world descended into chaos G.E.A. members started being mandated to take defensive courses at local gun ranges to protect themselves from anyone in these countries who may try and bring them harm.

The organization in 2033 reached a maximum of 700,000 people before they started to divulged into a group that could only be described as terrorist by the rest of the world. They used their donation money, and sold their old facilities as they moved all their members into the African Union, into the underdeveloped regions as they began to set up communities called "Front Cities" to not only finance their operations, but also recruit new membership. In these towns most of the members had began to farm, and set up local operations to help to Global Enlightenment Army, while James Reynolds started negotiating with the black market, and smugglers to get AK-47's, Dragunov SVD's, PK machine gun's, and other Cold-War weaponry from the first one. They may not be the most updated, but they do know how to defend themselves with basic hand to hand combat training, and a organizational structure to keep things running well.

In the year 2035, they have a total of 800,000 people, of which 90,000 of them are trained warriors ready to carry out the needs of James Reynolds, while the rest act as regular civilians secretly funding them.

Leader(s): Supreme Leader James Reynolds that holds absolute power, but tries to keep himself rarely seen without his faced being covered to prevent him from being found. He is active on Social Media, constantly trying to get more followers to assist his cause. The rest of the organization is divided into Committee's.

  • The Military Committee is responsible for training operatives, acquiring weapons, and planning attacks.
  • The Money/Business Committee funds the recruitment and training of operatives.
  • The Ethics Committee to keep the public's safety and concerns at the heart of the organization.
  • The Information Committee is responsible for studying foreign information, and provides valuable intelligence to the organization on how to expand and succeed.

Which country(s) is it located in?: The African Union, inner underdeveloped area's.

Controlled Territory (If any): Some small towns, but keeps the normal appearance that they are still under African Union influence.

Primary and Secondary goals of Organization: Destroy the so-called Super-Nations, and build a single democratic nation, to run the world as one.

Size of Organization: 800,000 supporters, of which 90,000 are actual fighters. The rest do financing, farming, and smaller tasks like intelligence gathering.

Military Capabilities: 90,000 fighters trained in basic hand to hand combat, no artillery or tanks, but has some helicopters that were bought back in 2028 when the organization was not yet a terrorist group for transportation. 30 Mil Mi-17, 8 Mil Mi-24, 80 UH-1 Iroquois helicopters.

Country: United States of the North Atlantic

It's closely allied with China, but as it stands the Juche beliefs of its populace keeps any sort of integration with another nation a pipe dream. The government would have to completely and utterly collapse first and even then China wouldn't necessarily integrate it. They value the country as a buffer state to keep tensions with the West low, but if they were to integrate it they would be in direct conflict with South Korea - which closely works with the US. Even in this alternative world where South Korea is part of the Pacific Alliance, it's still not strategically viable to anger such a large power for a tiny, poor stretch of land.

I forgot to note: Throughout the RP there will be random and set disasters that will happen. What the set dates are and when they happen won't be disclosed until they actually happen, but the random events work like this:

Periodically I'll use a random number generator to get a number between 1 and 16. This decides which country the event will happen to. Then I get a flip a coin to decide whether the event to beneficial or negative. I use a more complicated method to decide the intensity, but I'll keep it fair.

It would be best if you take a different nation, since the USNA is already taken. If you wish, you can break off a land from a different nation.

USNA? I thought the United Kingdom was independent, cant see where it says the UK is in the USNA, unless all the nations in NAFTA joined? Dont worry about it though Ill chose one of the predesignated ones. :)

No, the United Kingdom is part of the USNA. I would have left it independent, though if I did it would be significantly weaker than the surrounding nations. All the nations of the expanded Nafta joined.

Hey everyone! Sorry I couldn't be on earlier, I've had a crazy day. Anyway, I'm the Co-OP, playing as Switzerland. Here's my app for filing purposes:

Nation Name: Swiss Confederation
Leader: Federal Council (not one leader)
Describe your Government: Executive Branch is elected Council, Legislature is elected bicameral parliament, Judicial is a Federal Court. Referendums can be held on any passed law, so basically a semi-direct democracy.
Population: 9 million
Foreign Policy: Peace and Neutrality with all nations, Desires to foster peace between all the new superpowers.
b]Civil Freedoms:[/b] 9/10
Political Freedoms: 10/10
Describe your Economy: Highest GDPPC in the world, post-industrial economy. Extremely wealthy. Home to many multi-national corporations.
Describe your Military: Every male citizen undergoes basic military training, compulsory gun ownership. Voluntary for women.
Approx amount of soldiers: 200,000. Entire adult population can serve as part of a militia.
352 Leopard 2 MBTs, specially modified for mountain terrain and with Israeli-style escape hatch
One missile cruiser, SS Geneva (newly built for the RP) to guard Lake Geneva. Fully stocked with 90 Tomahawk missiles, more in storage base in port.
Air Force has grown over past decades:
---47 F-32s
---56 F-16s
---34 Apache Helicopters
---Assorted supply planes
Highly neutral, does not take part in armed conflict unless attacked.
Nuclear shelters can house the entire population. All mountain passes rigged with traps and detonation charges, country can basically cut itself off.
Immediate Goal: To foster peace between all nations as the new host of the UN

Nice to see you got this in today. Normally I wouldn't allow a random missile cruiser stocked with missiles, but I'm aware you're only using that for defensive purposes (I swear if you start bombarding Austria... :p ) Accepted!, of course.

I would like to submit a reservation.

Nation: European Union
Example of one of your RP posts: http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?p=22757262#p22757262

Edit- Finished the app.

The first automated fighter jet was tested in 2011, so yes. I could see them being in use - though manned fighters would still be the norm.
