Ciudad del Este Military Base
Province of Paraguay
The United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata
The military base had never been quiet; it was also one of the largest military bases in the nation, due to it being situated next to the Brazilian border, who the United Provinces had very chilly relations with. Now, that tensions were rising between the two, both economic and military powerhouses in South America, a steady stream of troops and supplies had begun to arrive at the base. Construction for a new section of barracks was scheduled in a week. The base had been put on high alert by the Rio de la Platan General Staff, for they feared a possible military confrontation with the larger, and more advanced Brazilian military.
All theoughout the base soldiers were engaged in harsh, almost cruel training by their superior officers. They performed back breaking labor, pulling heavy gear and supplies. They did complex military maneuvers and drills over and over again. Some were assigned to various work details regarding the expansion of the base, as if they were nothing more than just inmates in a prison camp for captured soldiers. However, in the President's eyes, it was absolutely necessary to do this - war could break out any day, and they needed to keep the soldiers in top fighting condition. While there was a pushing movement to stop this, it had not gained any momentum yet.
The commander of the base, Colonel Carlos Perón stared out of the base's building where he practically lived in. A small distance away the city of Ciudad del Este was in view, the towering skyscrapers looming over the base. In the clear blue sky he could easily spot a military plane, probably conducting a routine patrol from the nearby airfield. While the Rio de la Platan military had improved significantly after Brazil and the United Provinces stand off in the 2020 and 2030s, he feared that the La Platan military would be no match for their Brazilian counterpart, who possessed many advantages over them.
He turned, glancing at the calendar that was always plastered on the wall. Tomorrow he had a meeting with the 'Big Five', the other commanders of the largest bases located on the Brazilian-La Platan border. Together they would make up the primary defense in the case that Brazil launched an invasion, and it was imperative that they plan together and routinely meet as to discuss further strategies, Brazilian military activity and movements, and various other things related to this. He was not looking forward to this, as they seemed to never agree on anything.
Perón still couldn't shake off his feeling of uneasiness. He had begun to feel it after the end of the last meeting with the Big Five. It made him a bit queasy, and sometimes it would give him small headaches and even chest and back pain, although he wasn't sure why. It was the stress, he said to himself over and over again, but he had his doubts.
The Colonel decided he would eat first, to help him think more clearly. It was nearing lunch time; he would have time to go over things later.
