Palin v. Letterman

Postby Menta Lee-IL » Sun Jun 14, 2009 9:54 am

Given my nation's name, I have a vested interest in this story...well, kinda.

I'm sure many of you know about this already, but I wanted to get feedback, opinions, etc.
If you don't know the story, then in a nutshell here it is: Letterman made a joke about one of Palin's daughters (in this case, Bristol) being knocked up during a Yankee's game by "player" (in both senses of the word) Alex Rodriguez.

Then the shit hit the fan. Palin was at the game with 14 yr old daugher Willow, not Bristol, and so the Palin's went off on Letterman, accusing him of pedophilia and being "perverted" for making such a joke. Letterman then admitted the joke was tasteless and likely over the line, and probably regrets making the joke. It was a half-hearted apology somewhat, but at least he admitted to its poor taste.

Palin still went off on Letterman even after his remarks of semi-regret and said it was a sign of how New York/Hollywood entertainers "don't get" or what not the rest of America.

Palin makes me cringe on so many levels. She is clearly trying to use this for political or personal gain in terms of sticking up for morality and how nasty evil Hollywood liberals are exactly that - evil and nasty. Letterman expressed his semi-regret, and he clearly meant it as a stupid joke about Bristol, but she still feels to drag this on and on, when she should have just dropped it, even going so far as to say she'd not let Willow go near Dave - what a load of bullshit.

Letterman is a goof and meant NOTHING by his joke, because it was just that, a joke. Palin trying to be a '"good old boy" Conservative is demonizing Letterman in her own over-the-top way; she should drop this.

I dunno. I like Letterman, but he does have a big left-wing bias (who on TV doesn't?). I do think that generally, you shouldn't attack people's families.

Letterman is pretty Democratic in my opinion, and personally I don't think he "attacked" Bristol Palin; the audience laughed a great deal at the joke (not that that justifies the joke, I think it *was* in bad taste, but I'd hardly call it an attack).

Honesty I do believe Letterman when he said he meant the older daughter and mistaken the two. However, a formal apology to the younger daughter for making those remarks should be given, not a round about apology, as that is a pretty cruel thing for a 14 year old to hear. With that said, once the formal apology is given, the topic should be dropped and moved on as I do admit, Letterman shouldn't be strung up by his balls for making the mistake with a tactless joke.

She's probably trying to get back at Letterman.

Remember when Letterman went on that 15 minute rant against McCain because he cancelled out on his show at the last minute. That was really bad publicity for the Republican party.

Then there was McCain's "I screwed Up" line that he said on Letterman's show.

David Letterman gets a free pass because he kicks ass. Anyone--Democrat, Republican, Independent, Jesus--who takes on Letterman can suck a fat one in my humble opinion.

So what's next? Jon Stewart having to apologize because he made cracks about Palin's family?

The woman brought this upon herself. She chose to put her family in the limelight. I feel bad for the kids, yes, but censoring comedians is just wrong.

EDIT: Also, I just about shit my pants when a Sarah Palin ad came up on the sidebar just now.

Letterman was crude, rude, insulting, and tastelessly ugly. Who the target was supposed be? Matters not a whit. He should go hang his head in shame and apologize to everyone, ESPECIALLY his audience, for his grossly idiotic behavior.

Kudos to Palin for standing up and saying "What you did is wrong." She is absolutely right. What he said was wrong, and such horrible things should never be said. Period.

She is right for saying it was wrong, but saying she wouldn't trust having her 14 yr old around Letterman is equally insulting, if not more so.

And again, not to justify what he said, but there is FAR worse spewn on television than this joke (e.g. on the O'Reilly Factor).

Blame your capitalist system. There are people out there that like hearing shitty, tasteless jokes like that (evidenced by the crowd's reaction to the joke), so that shit gets views and money - which is why he can and will say things like that.

I'm not talking in the abstract. I'm talking about the format and structure of entertainment and news (which, unfortunately for news, is becoming more and more synonymous) in the US today. We have a system where people on TV are encouraged to do the absurd and the obscene to get views and money. Palin played the same system just a couple months ago, so she shouldn't be so surprised, unless she really is as dumb as her Couric interview suggested.

ohforgodssake did you see the clip?

it was in poor taste but it is hardly "crude, rude, insulting and tastelessly ugly"

and since he did apologize she should have accepted it graciously.

i think he was right to apologize.

not because it was a terrible insult--it was more of an insult to A-rod who he has been making naughty jokes about since when he took up with madonna--but because the children of famous people are not fair game (even if their parents parade them around)

Since you don't know how I would react, let me speak for myself: it depends on the joke and the context, and who it was said by; Letterman is a comedian; Limbaugh and O'Reilly are "reporters" and commentators and only comedians by accident.
