Also, for some reason this reminds me of the reimagined BSG, in the pilot movie you see inside Gaius Baltars house and he has two fish in glass flower vases. I always thought that was odd and rather cruel. So I guess this means you can't ban fishbowls as those evil geniuses will find worse alternatives.

I will admit defeat. I did jump the gun and make a claim through what was more than likely biased standpoint. However, I would like to point out that because of the differences in biology and nervous systems between them, there is no reason that they do not, or cannot have the same level of intelligence, just different short term versus long terms or even associative memories.

I will steer the conversation back to the original argument which is, "is it animal cruelty and should be banned?" the science is on my side more less, as far as it can objectively. The facts point to them being...how do I say without sounding emotional, nope, can't. They're terrible. The nitrogen cycle simply cannot keep up with the amount of waste produced by even a small goldfish in the aver 1/2-1 gallon fish bowl.

Oy vey. I just realized how late it was for me, I'll continue this debate later. Been up for almost 24 hours, keyboard looks all fuzzy...

Your.problem is that fishbowls are cheap and cost is the reason people dont invest in large tanks and good filters. Luckily the local pet shop doesnt stock bowls.

Me Im looking for a good aquaponics system...

I used to have goldfish. Mine were kept in a tank with a proper filter, rather than a goldfish bowl, but it was a small tank. They only lived for around five or six years, and I confess to being quite unaware that goldfish could live as long as twenty years; I feel a little guilty and depressed about that, but in my defence, I was only a child at the time.

I've always thought goldfish bowls probably weren't the ideal habit for a fish. I'd be in favour of banning them, along with the practice of giving away goldfish as prizes at fairs and carnivals.

Rome did that and in certain parts of Japan children must now be accompanied by an adult to play goldfish scooping games. It's a start

Do animals even have feelings?

Seriously, what the fuck are people supposed to keep pet fish in? Solo cups? Fish are meant to be kept as pet/eaten (mainly eaten), I doubt a glass bowl would send their life into misery and woe.

Yes, I believe goldfish tanks are inhumane (infishmane?), but honestly banning goldfish bowls is impractical. Humans are (mostly) selfish and greedy, and don't want to spend a lot of money on a fish. I will admit, I have accidentally killed more than a few fish by accidental starvation (don't ask). That's just my little point of view.

If it really is cruel then go ahead and ban them.
Honestly however, I don't really care!
