House of Cards Based RP

OP Board: OP-Bujahla | Co-OP-The Kingdom of Glitter, Waztaskio

RP Description

IC: The year is 2011, but nothing with the government is the same. The United States in 2008 took a different turn than IRL and John McCain was elected to the presidency with his running mate, Sarah Palin as Vice President, against John Edwards. Now, it is January 2011 and the nation is slowly but surely recovering from the economic shock of the Great Recession started in 2007. With a Democratic majority in the House and Senate up until the midterm elections, the nation was progressing under an increased stimulus package that, to McCain's desires, include a stimulus package. Now, the year is 2011 and the midterm elections have passed. The Republicans now hold Senate. The President is stress, the vice president is considered rather 'bat-shit crazy,' the Democrats have a lead in the House, and the Senate is somehow Republican. Now, contesting with major differences in the parties, it is time to run the nation.

OOC: Greetings! Welcome to Nation States House of Cards based RP. This RP will be a character RP where you will take on the role of one of many different positions within the US government. President, Vice, Senator, Representative, governor, or more. Eventually, as the number of players grow, we will allow more characters of different sorts. The point of this RP is the accurately RP the US government, but with a twist. The nation and its members of congress are slightly different. You will be able to build your own characters, but not from the ground up. Each character will have to be similar to another real life politician. The point of this is to help with random events and scandals that will hit each character. Your character will be hit with major issues at perhaps inappropriate times. You may be the House Majority leader and while in the middle of writing a major bill you may have a local issue that is pressing. Anything can and will happen. Because of this, your characters will be need to be based off of another one. Why? Well because I can't find events if your character is completely made up. It's quite simple. None the less, have fun as you lay your hand in this house of cards.

Announcements
-- Reservations will last one day for major spots, three days for minor characters
-- Pictures don't need to be of base or politician, but it's suggested that you have photos so that if they have to give a speech or something, then you can use them.
-- The Leaderships of the House and Senate need to start discussing if they want to start Congress the day after or a whenever they start it. Then they post the openings of the House and Senate with links to their threads for actual discussion of House and Senate stuff. They decide where to take it. I have media responses planned if they decide to jump in, or if they wait.
-- The House needs Republicans and Minority Leadership. Also need a Vice President. Please file in!

Roster

The link to the Roster is here. It is a google docs due to simplicity to update.

The Senate has: R-51, I-2, D-47
The House has: D-237, R-198

Application Process

Below is the code to the application. It works for any position of government. Please answer with lots of detail or face rejection or possibly acceptance but then horrible scandals. Please do not remove the 429 tag. Credit for basis goes to NGS Baltonia Edition Senatorial Database.

Rules

1. Obey NationStates forum rules
2. Obey the OP and those appointed as per their role
3. Make sure you are not metagaming, godmodding, numberspamming, or generally RPing in bad form
4. Have a couple of paragraphs a post and good grammar & spelling
5. Exercise common sense generously
6. Be active every couple of days at least
7. Invite people to the thread (we can use useless people that just vote, lol)
8. Flaws. Your character, like many politicians, has flaws and in some cases it is only a matter of time before the media outlets find out what they are. It is how you handle these scandals that break before the press that determines how your character survives them, not how much complaining you do in the OOC thread. Do you think any actual politician ever planned for a scandal to hit their career and bring it to a grinding halt? No, they did not. However, those that handled them well survived and some of them have gone on to become some of the biggest names in politics.
9. Don't complain in the OOC a ton.
10. Don't cause other players to leave the RP.
11. RP in character. Breaking character won't result in OOC harm, but will in the IC.
12. Time is run by the OP and will be based on my posts. Co-OP's can fill in for OP when directed.
13. Don't take this too seriously. It's about having fun.

Have Fun!

So the only difference between our character and the politician the character is based on is just the name or can we change some other things like ethnicity, gender, etc?

Limited changes within reason. You can make some political ideas difference. Perhaps appearance (though preferably not). Ethnicity and gender are limited. Keep in mind the number of women and non-white people in congress. We can't have a ton of non-white people and all females for the hell of it.

So only a certain number of people can make a female asian version of Marco Rubio (for example)?

Only one variation of a person is allowed. I will add that to announcements. So if you claim Marco Rubio as your base, then yes. Now keep in mind, a lot of his ideals are based off his race and gender. If you make him asian and female, he might not have the same immigration and abortion and all that stance/justification.

And the "few" there are would likely be within the Democratic Party, particularly in 2011.

In that case, would it not be viable to have people be members of major committees. Aka members of the committee of appropriations? Members who are considered to be among the most influential members of congress?
