ICELFA Season 56: Season Review

VLC spent pretty much the entire season at the top of the table, and a large part of the season holding RGS back at arms length to win a relatively comfortable 5th title in 6 years. The question is whether they can do it again, as history has shown that dynasties not named RGS start to wear out around the 6 year mark in the history of the Premier League - the monopoly breaking Royal Jam side won 4 in 6 and have not won since, the Olympia side replacing them winning 5 in 8. A few small scale transfers at the top end as some players returned from stints abroad, and as ever the march of time claiming more notable retirements - most notable amongst the big 5 were the retirements of Sven Zakari for the champions, and Lonell Gould for Olympia, both defenders racking up over 400 starts for each club and also featuring for country at various points.

The season kicked off in traditional fashion with the clash of champions curtain raiser, VLC stamping their authority early on with a clean 3-0 win over Seniors. The usual suspects all responded - wins for RGS and Olympia although the Royals did have to work for it when Xilon drew level from 2-0 down, finishing 4-2. As for Norrion and Royal Jam, they started the season against each other and much to everyone’s surprise, it was the visitors that triumphed, a comfortable 2-0 win a far cry from performances in recent seasons. The following two weeks threw up even more surprises, as Royal Jam continued their clean sweep by taking out Olympia and RGS, a feat that put them top of the table as the only perfect side three games in courtesy of the Wasps dropping points to Xilon. RGS and Norrion also dropped even more points - the Royals drawing with Toclofania and the Stags losing to Albion, and then even the Fjorders in week 4. Royal Jam continued their perfect start by beating the Silver Foxes that week, whilst Olympia had to come from a goal down twice to beat the Lions 4-2. All five of the big teams won the following week, including Norrion returning to normal service by thrashing the Hummingbirds 3-0 - outdone by Olympia’s 6-1 domination of the Stags’ previous opponents. VLC blinked first in the race at the top, a tired performance seeing the Architects win 3-1 and move into third whilst the Strawberries continued their 100% start, three clear of Olympia and 5 clear of the Lodger City duo, RGS seeing off a late FM Town comeback to win 4-3.

Royal Jam’s stunning start did have to end sometime, and VLC made sure they did their job in the clash between the surprise early favourites at Vorgan Park, whilst Nile Bridge kept up their brilliant form with a mammoth 7-0 win against the Ultramarines. Not to be outdone, Olympia moved top on goal difference, but RGS faltered on the road at Marshbrook, allowing Albion to overtake them, whilst Norrion continued to roar back by putting 5 past Yillog City. The following weekend saw some very one-sided scores, with the Stags kicking the matches off with 8 goals in the second half against high-flying Nile Bridge. Olympia and VLC both put four past their lowly opposition, whilst the Royals crushed newly promoted Polkation 5-0. The Strawberries didn’t join in however, as they were found faltering against Albion, losing 1-0 to the Millers. The picture continued to change over the next few weeks, first as Olympia, Nile Bridge, VLC and Albion all drew each other in direct matches, before VLC defeated Norrion the following week, combined with RGS being outclassed by Nile Bridge only to defeat the Architects 3-1. The Stags bounced back well though, coming from 2-0 down to defeat league leaders Olympia, allowing Royal Jam to fumble spectacularly by losing to the Hummingbirds. RGS moved top of the table in one of their biggest ever wins, as they ran up double digits against the Ultramarines, winning 10-3, VLC behind on goal difference with a win. That turned into a 2 point advantage the following week for the Royals after they saw off Norrion, whilst 2nd place VLC and 3rd place Olympia only fought out a draw - Royal Jam now level with VLC but behind on goal difference with a win of their own.

RGS continued their hold on first place heading into the middle portion of the season by defeating Olympia in Mount Salt City, the hosts spared from dropping out of the top 4 following surprise draws for Albion and Nile Bridge against midtable opposition, whilst Norrion closed the gap after putting four past the Silver Foxes. The following week ended up with almost the typical 1st vs 2nd affair, the Lodger City derby seeing hosts RGS twice have their lead removed from the penalty spot as the Wasps kept themselves in the title hunt. Wins for the rest of the Big 5 sees the Strawberries move level with the Royals at the top of the tree, the top 7 only covered by 8 points. Little changed the following week, all of the top 5 winning and Albion beating the Architects in a big match for the race to the IFCF spots, but all hell broke loose the following week as the second half of the season kicked off, with the leaders picking Xilon OC as the side to lose to and allow the Strawberries to go back to the top of the table, which they did so by beating the Stags. The helter-skelter continued the following week, with RGS and Norrion both having to come from behind to draw against midtable opponents, whilst Royal Jam’s brief stint back at the top was ended by losing to Olympia - they continued that reversal of fortune by losing at home to the Royals, but Olympia failed to capitalise and move into the top two by getting held against the Millers. That gave VLC a bit of a gap at the top of three points, the other three covered by a single point and Norrion fighting Nile Bridge and Albion a further 5 points back.

No change the following week amongst the big 5, all five sides winning relatively comfortably, although Norrion will be glad for the breathing space after RGS put three past a normally resolute Albion defence. They followed that up by putting five past a Lions side lurking a little ways above the drop, whilst Olympia followed suit by edging out FM Town in a seven goal bonanza. Leader VLC were the next to blink in this exciting battle, the Wasps kicking the weekend off by drawing to Nile Bridge, and Royal Jam duly followed suit, not showing at all against the Blades and allowing the Stags to close the gap to fourth down to two points. The Strawberries did make sure to turn up the following match however, getting revenge for the loss in the first half of the season by inflicting another loss on VLC, allowing RGS to go top of the tree. Olympia failed to take the opportunity to move into the top two as well however, a late own goal seeing them surrender points to the Artists. VLC made sure to respond in force the next match, putting five past the relegation battling Ultramarines. As for the Stags, they had pulled themselves back into contention a bit, 2 points from fourth and 6 from the top, only to throw it away the following week by being roundly destroyed by Nile Bridge. The Architects then turned their sights onto Olympia, managing to come away from Mount Salt City with a goalless draw in what was a fairly drab and boring fare by both sides’ standards. The Stags responded to their setback the previous weekend by also smashing UR Town, whilst RGS went to town against bottom of the table Yillog City, putting five past a side very much demonstrating second season syndrome.

The run in kicked off with two big results at the top - first being VLC and Norrion playing out a draw in New Lodger City before Royal Jam dropped to fourth through an embarrassing loss to FM Town, a combination allowing RGS to go four points clear at the top, a position they cemented the following week emphatically by continuing the Ultramarines dismal season defensively with a 7-0 demolition job. VLC and Royal Jam both secured narrow wins of their own, but Norrion gave their hopes of an automatic IFCF place a big boost after coming from behind to beat Olympia, moving just three behind them. Nile Bridge continued their decent showing this season by firing five past Seniors, the Silver Foxes then giving UR Town a much welcome reprieve the next match by shipping another 6 goals. The topsy-turvy story at the top continued though, as RGS kicked off the weekend by defeating Norrion, in the process opening up a seven point gap at the top with three to play as VLC were heavily beaten by Olympia, a welcome result in the race for fourth as it opened a six point gap to the Stags. RGS sealed the title with a big win against Olympia the following week, with wins for VLC and Royal Jam all but removing Olympia from Champions League contention. Fortunately for them, Norrion were held to a surprise draw by Seniors, although with both RGS and VLC in the KCC final, fifth place was now granted a Challengers Cup spot. VLC held the advantage of goal difference over the Strawberries, but that meant little after they were kept at level pegging by RGS in the reverse derby, Royal Jam taking full advantage by beating Nile Bridge to move two points clear of the Wasps heading into the final game of the season, with Olympia and Norrion both confirmed to be playing Challengers Cup football next season. VLC needed to win and hope Royal Jam failed to - they fell at the first of those hurdles once the Hummingbirds took the lead, and the second once the Strawberries completed their turnaround against UR Town. RGS underlined their title by putting seven past Seniors, who were spared relegation as Xilon were also beaten by Olympia, joining well relegated Polkation and Yillog City back in the second tier.

A late submission to the Goal of the Season race, but the winning goal was this extremely late winner from young Strawberries’ substitute striker Soma Haugland, who won this match in the 89th minute with an incredibly mazy dribble from her own box to the opponents box, magically skipping past six tackles before slotting the ball beneath the keeper and off the post for an extremely important goal for Royal Jam’s season, putting them in pole position for Champions League qualification going into the final game.

ICELFA Season 57: Season Review

Last season was a bit of a toss up all season, as VLC weren’t hitting their usual heights they’ve been hitting for the past 6 years, and the likes of Royal Jam were taking everyone by surprise throughout the season, pipping the Wasps and Olympia to a first Champions League qualification in several years. That in the end the season ended up as an RGS league and cup double with the Royals beating VLC in the final almost feels like a mistake from Margaret.

ICELFA Season 58: Season Review

Have we now entered an era of flux? Is the VLC dynasty truly over? Olympia came out of a heated battle amongst the top teams last season to pip the Royals to the title, and in doing so have become the third unique winning team in three seasons, a feat not seen for nearly ten years when Olympia were the middle of three winning sides, shortly before the Wasps began to win everything. Regardless, with the top 5 only covered by seven points, and with the Architects of all teams shocking the country by going toe to toe for the Champions League race at times, maybe this next season will crown a fourth different winner, a feat that has never been achieved since the league’s inauguration.
