Is killing pigs for food the same as murdering children?

Postby Rostogovia » Wed Jun 11, 2014 2:09 pm

Multiple studies have shown that pigs preform better on intelligence tests and cognitive evaluations than most 3 year old children, indicating that they are just as sentient as 3 year old children of our own species. Mother pigs in factory farms are known to cry and howl for days after they are separated from their children, pacing around their pens and attempting to find their lost children. what does NS think, is the meat industry genocide?

Uh...no. Yes, perhaps pigs do perform better than three-year-olds at tests, but when that child reaches perhaps the age of ten, they perform far better, and by 25, there is no comparison. No, it is not the same, because adult pigs are not as smart as adult people. Children grow into adults, and their intelligence improves. Pigs may grow and their intelligence may improve, but not on the rate of humans.

Nice sensational title, though.

My personal philosophy is that since humans are able to survive without taking lives, it's our obligation to do so.

No, killing pigs is not the same as murdering children. Domesticated pigs were bred to be made into food, and children can grow up to be productive members of society. And now, I'm gonna eat a whole plate o' bacon.

No its not. I'm of the belief (and Its illogical so feel free to tear it apart) that there is something innately good about the human species that puts it in a position above other animals. It's got nothing to do with intelligence its to do with an irrational feeling and that is that I don't have a problem with killing an animal, I do have a problem with killing a human.

Despite this I love animals and I find people who are cruel to animals quite disturbing. Many animals are sentient and can recognize themselves and many are very clever; because of this we should treat animals with kindness and if were going to eat them they should be reared in a humane way.

Well, I'm a vegetarian, and I hope that someday soon, we can stop eating meat, or replace it with the lab-grown meat, but I don't think this is really all that comparable, for reasons already mentioned.

No, because pigs don't have a little thingy called human rights. They have the right to feel as little pain as humanly inflictable.

No. Young children aren't very smart, but age a few years, and we're way smarter than pigs. Let's not give PETA any bright ideas.

No. They may be "intelligent" for a 3 year old, but when a child grows up, you can't really compare them, now can you?

Obviously, this calls for the consumption of children and eating of babies.

Technically, it is not genocide, since genocide would have to occur within our own species. I have no moral dilema with eating meat, even after hearing this information, but I'd had no issue if somebody else were to abstain from it.
I frequently use dark humor and sarcasm. Don't take anything I say seriously. Unless it is.

Philosophically, it depends on what value you put on either life.

Materially, killing pigs for food is often much more easy and isn't seen as necessarily "bad" and thus can't reasonably be said to be equivalent.

Well that's a bit silly. We can survive without lots of things and meat (in moderation) is good for us. Humans are omnivores and whilst you can be healthy and be Vegetarian your body is designed to eat both meat and vegetables.
