[PASSED] Commend Astarial

Postby McMasterdonia » Sun Jun 08, 2014 12:15 am

This is my second attempt at a proposal to commend Astarial. This one is obviously a significant improvement and a more serious proposal. I've shared this draft around to a couple of forums already, however I don't intend to rush this proposal through.

I firmly believe that Astarial is very deserving of a commendation. Whether or not you agree with all of their politics or not. Astarial has made a huge contribution to this game and is in my opinion one of the most widely respected individuals in gameplay.

If you have any questions about the content of the proposal or wish to suggest amendments, please feel free to do so. My co-author or myself will get to them as soon as we can.

Commend Astarial

The Security Council,

Acknowledges that Astarial has been an active contributor to NationStates for more than nine years.

Recognizes the hard work that Astarial has put into Equilism, serving in nearly every Government position including: Prime Minister, Military Minister, Domestic Affairs Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister, Immigration Minister and Associate Justice.

Notes that the region of Equilism has sustained itself significantly due to the efforts of Astarial in recruitment, culture, entertainment, and their leadership in the affairs of government through several government terms.

Applauds Astarial’s long-time involvement in regional militaries and their expertise as a military commander, having served as Secretary of State of the Alliance Defense Network, Commander of the Central Defence Army, and Chief of Staff of the E-Army of Equilism. Their grace and honorable behavior on the battlefield were recognized by allies and opponents alike, and nations across the raider-defender divide.

Admires Astarial's extensive commitment to legislative improvement in Equilism, Osiris, and The North Pacific, which has led to the nation achieving recognition as an effective legislator and civil servant across interregional boundaries.

Asserts that Astarial was a fierce campaigner against the rogue delegacy of The Dourian Embassy in Osiris, during which the region was occupied by Gatesville Inc and thousands of nations were ejected. Astarial’s work in the coup’s aftermath, from the positions of Kai Repat and Pharaoh, laid the foundation for the subsequent cultural, legislative, and political reformation of Osiris.

Appreciates Astarial’s extraordinary skills in diplomacy, evident in their involvement in the successful negotiation of formal treaties, the establishment of long-lasting alliances between multiple regions, and their fundamental contributions to interregional organizations.

Affirms that throughout their history, Astarial has demonstrated commendable commitment to the protection of regional sovereignty, and has consistently contributed to efforts against the spread of hateful ideologies in NationStates.

Observes Astarial’s dedication to mentoring and supporting other nations and World Assembly Delegates in their duties, applying their experience and knowledge to supporting the next generation of regional leaders, and acknowledging these efforts as having contributed to the nation's international respect as a highly capable diplomat and honourable nation.

Contends that Astarial’s leadership has brought peace and tranquility to Warzone Europe, a region previously plagued with unrest and military upheavals. Under Astarial’s direction, Warzone Europe has enjoyed a stable delegacy for the record period of six months.

Believes that the contributions of Astarial to NationStates are extensive, significant and deserving of recognition.

Hereby commends Astarial.

Colon is needed after "including".

Also, only use one link per nation/region. Don't have a link to the nation/region every time it's mentioned.
Just some weeb.

I'll edit out the links before submitting. We got a bit excited with them

Is SovCon really commendable?

It was an Empire-friendly club. I know TRR refused to join because the terms of the agreement were completely against regional sovereignty - we were greeted with our delegate resigning and bugging up our Regional Flag with SovCon's flag and SovCon never officially apologized. The funny part is SovCon loved to do big statements - they felt the dire need to post a big letter to TNP about Ravania when the latter had nothing to do with them, but when one of their founding members committed such unacceptable behavior, we could barely get a insincere "sorry" from its senior officers on IRC, others said we were to blame.

Furthermore, SovCon's anti-Nazi efforts were exactly the sort of thing that the SC disavowed itself of with "Repeal 'Liberate NAZI EUROPE'". SovCon collapsed in only a few months and the ruined relations between Osiris and Gatesville led to the Civil War, from what I've heard.

I would support your resolution if it didn't take the opportunity to applaud SovCon of all things.

It's worthy of mention in a commendation, yes, particularly the way it has been mentioned in this one.

This commendation commends Astarial for commitment to regional sovereignty, as demonstrated by contributions to the creation of SovCon, subsequent leadership of the organization, and its anti-Nazi efforts. That isn't a commendation of SovCon, it's a commendation of Astarial for an individual role in SovCon.

Aside from that, do we really want to open this can of worms? Should Goobergunchia's commendation be repealed because it notes the Red Liberty Alliance, perhaps the most disgraceful organization ever to inflict itself upon NationStates? I could go on and point out the questionable actions of, for example, the Founderless Regions Alliance and the United Defenders League, both of which are included in various commendations. As much as I would enjoy doing that, I think my point is made.

Every organization has some baggage, even the ones the Security Council has already decided merit inclusion in commendations. Let's not start a precedent of killing commendations because an organization given a brief mention is imperfect. The only difference here is that you don't like this particular organization.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but would referring to NationStates as a game be against Rule 4?
Otherwise, I like it. :)

There's precedent for using NationStates in a proposal. It's been ruled legal somewhere (or so McM told us when we raised the same concern).

Indeed, we have "NationStates" mentioned in SC#2, SC#4, SC#12, SC#21, SC#25 (repealed), SC#26, SC#29, SC#30... shall I go on?

It would appear that as long as you don't refer to NS as a "game" then it's fine.

Always gotta be careful when looking back to the original proposals to use as precedents considering Rule 4. NationStates is fine though.

I think the hate surrounding the RLA is well over blown - and mostly by the same independentists (former ADNers) who led SovCon.

However, we're not just talking about some "baggage" here, SovCon barely did anything: it ran for a few months and was almost totally dysfunctional - let alone the fact that its mission statement was completely counter to its actual goals of centralizing regions under a Gasponian executive (as Rubber Soul's leaks revealed).

I'm not "killing this resolution", I'm saying this resolution would be much stronger without a mention of Astarial's leadership of an organization that exploded in on itself in short notice. Likewise, if we could go back in time and remove the worshiping of the MPA in AMOM's commendation, I'd do the same there too, since that org lasted just about as long.

I'm going to have to agree about SovCon. I'm not sure it adds anything to the proposal considering how short-lived it was.

I'm opposed to this now due to the removal of the language related to Sovereign Confederation, based on defender objections.

I will also be campaigning against it if the language remains absent from the proposal at time of submission.

Now that's just petty. You're really going to get in the way of an attempt to Commend someone, who you believe deserves Commendation, just because you do not like that one minor piece of a draft was removed due to objections raised by those on the other end of the spectrum? Mind you that only Unibot really made it a make or break issue and I'm sure McM doesn't give too much of a damn about what he thinks. Mall also stated an objection on the SovCon language based on the grounds of its significance, which I think weighed more on McM's decision.

:eyebrow:

Are you really going to set an ultimatum to launch a campaign against a commendation of a candidate that we all think is deserving, simply because you don't want to see a minor part of her career, and your career, credited with being best left out of a commendation? There are valid arguments that it does Asta's commendation and injustice. Grow up.

Maybe we should ask Asta whether or not she would want it included. It is her legacy, after all.

This is part of the reason I'm annoyed. I know Asta, and I'm 95% sure she would want SovCon mentioned in her Commendation. I don't want to see it stripped from her Commendation because of Unibot's (or Mall's) objections or Mcmasterdonia's political expediency.

McMasterdonia's political expediency?

I know Asta too, and I would guess that she doesn't need you to tell everyone what she might think. There's nothing to lose from asking her personally what she thinks about this.

And when she's around, I will ask her. Until then I don't support this, based on what I'm pretty sure her answer will be given that she has always been proud of her role in SovCon.

You should know I don't respond to that type of behavior Cormac. As you can see from a read of this thread, it is not simply defender opposition that caused us to remove it.

My co-author and I decided to remove it because we were concerned that the mention of SovCon would overshadow Astarials other achievements and lead to potential vote stacking and a campaign against it. Astarial has had a long and distinguished career and deserves to be commended.
