A Bloody Peace (FT, CLOSED)

Captain Nathan Wright CS DSO
London
Sol Star System, the Core, the Terran Empire (Alpha Quadrant)
Monday 4th April 2692

Nathan Wright was very much a product of the Amsus War. He was a Captain at the age of thirty-four, was the Commanding Officer of an Imperial Battlecruiser and had a chest full of medals (by the standards of the Terran Empire anyway). Given the need to crew ships as quickly as possible the Imperial Navy had played it fast and loose with promotions and had seen some officers reach dizzying heights as a result, the most obvious of this was of course Highlady Harrington, in some cases this had come back to bite them in the arse, but for the most part in the post-war years it left the Imperial Navy with a cadre of experienced Starship Captains. This was not exactly a bad thing as it meant that all of the new construction coming off of the production lines would have an experienced Captain, whilst smaller vessels (such as cruisers and destroyers) would be commanded by the next generation. It was a happy side-effect of the war, one that the Office of Naval Personnel was glad to have as it made their job a whole hell of a lot easier.

Nathan Wright, who had been made a Companion of the Order of the Sword in the Victory Honours List to go with his Distinguished Service Order, had made Captain in fourteen years (this was a full four years below the ‘average’ time in service for a Captain), having been promoted rapidly through the ranks in the ten years since the resurgence of the Empire, during which most of his service had been. Wright was, rightly so, proud of his achievement even by wartime standards, and they had all made possible by hard work and determination. He had seen more combat in his ten years, and in particular his time in command of cruisers and destroyers, to last him a lifetime and he was one of those that was decidedly happy that the war was over, despite the success it had brought him. He was a strong believer in the Empire of course, and was proud to have taken part in its restoration, but at the same time he knew the cost that it had taken to get it restored, and that he had no wish to visit that kind of warfare on the Empire ever again.

Wright had commanded the Heavy Cruiser, HMS Sir Edward Pellew, during the Grand Invasion and had for just over a year immediately after the war he had served as the Operations Officer for Home Fleet as it completed its re-orientation to defending the Core. Then, a few weeks ago, he had received new orders that had given him command of the new-build Battlecruiser, HMS Repulse. He, and his crew, had then spent the time since them working up in the Sol System with absolutely no idea as to where they were actually going or what they were doing, just that they had to be ready soonest. The powers that be were keeping very hush-hush about the entire affair, which to Wright was not particularly promising as it implied that something either very important or very dangerous was going on, possibly both, either of which would mean that his time in command of the Repulse was going to be… interesting to say the least. But then as the saying went, if you couldn’t take a joke you shouldn’t have joined, and unlike many who had joined because of the war, he was one of those who had joined up before there was even a hint that the Empire would be restored.

That was until he had received orders late the previous night to report to the Admiralty at 0900hrs the following morning, to speak to none other than the Chief of Fleet Operations, Highlady Harrington herself.

Wright made his ways through the corridors of the Admiralty, his peaked cap tucked under his arm. Given his rank he was able to make good progress through the busy corridors. He had to admit that he was very interested in finding out what was going on, he considered it likely that he would not like it but he still wanted to know precisely what he would be up to in the upcoming months. On the one hand he wondered if it was routine, but then he wouldn’t be getting a personal briefing from the Chief of Fleet Operations herself, more to the point he wouldn’t have had his every request on the personnel front granted, as a general rule Starship Captains were free to request whoever they wanted, they just didn’t always get them. But Wright had, very single personnel request he had made had been accepted with unheard of speed.

Which left the other possibility; something special. Now he hadn’t gotten wind of anything out of the ordinary going on, and as a Starship Captain he had a fairly decent network of contacts across the Fleet and in the Admiralty itself, none of them had given him anything. This meant that if there was something going on it was being kept classified at the highest levels, not something that instilled Wright with confidence. It wasn’t so much that he wasn’t prepared or even unwilling to take on any mission that the Imperial Navy wanted him to carry out, he just didn’t like being kept in the dark. Once he knew what his task was going to be he could start thinking about how to handle it. Never the less, whilst special operations such as this were unusual they were also more dangerous and could go wrong very quickly. It wasn’t so much that Wright himself was afraid to face death in the name of the Empire, but he had seen far too many people under his command go to their deaths and he had no desire to see any more. But he was an Imperial Naval Officer, he would do his duty.

“Captain Wright, to see Admiral Harrington,” Wright said as he stepped up to Harrington’s aide.

“You’re expected, Captain,” The Chief Petty Officer replied. “Go right in.”

Admiral Harrington was sat behind her desk hard at work across a variety of tablets and her main computer console. One wall of her office was dominated by a massive screen that showed the locations of every single ship in the Imperial Navy, and could be manipulated from her desk with ease. She looked up at he entered and smiled warmly and leant across her desk to shake his hand. She was only five years older than he was, but look how far she had come. But then she was a prodigy when it came to Naval Service and she had the knack it seemed of being in the right place at the right time over and over again, and doing exactly the right thing in those circumstances. The fact that she had become close to the likes of Walker Von Karin, Darien Cain and, of course, the King, had no doubt helped in that regard. Never the less no one could question her skills, nor her sense of humility, Wright could tell from her eyes that she knew her failings as much as anyone, and had seen as much, if not more, death as he had.

“Captain, thank you for coming so promptly,” Harrington commented. “Please, have a seat.”

“Thank you, my lady,” Wright replied, he had never interacted with a naval officer who was also a noble before so he wasn’t quite sure how to proceed.

“Ma’am will suffice I think, as far as I’m concerned I’m a naval officer first,” Harrington replied with a slight smile. “Or at least that’s what I tell my self during endless meetings of the Highlord Council.”

“I can imagine, Ma’am,” Wright smiled in return.

“Well, I would imagine that you are wondering what we’ve got in store for you, I’m sorry about all the secrecy but I’m sure that once you hear me out you’ll understand exactly why we’ve been keeping it under our hats for so long,” Harrington commented. “I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that this entire briefing his top secret.”

Wright nodded and Harrington handed him a tablet, this one was special as it had a thin golden stripe along the thin side which identified it as formal ‘written’ orders, the information on them could be accessed and updated but not altered by the reader, and all edits by the issuer were saved in case of something untoward happening. These constituted legal orders and were typically required to remain safely in the Captain’s Quarters for obvious reasons.

“A few months ago an Imperial scout entered this spacial anomaly, it appears to be a stable wormhole, which is obviously quite unusual as we’ve only encountered a few before, most of which are comparatively short, a few hundred lightyears, as a result of their stable nature, this one is different,” Harrington explained. “This wormhole comes out approximately two point five million lightyears away in the Andromeda Galaxy. And if that wasn’t enough the system it comes into appears to have an Earth-Type planet that is capable of supporting life with next to no terraforming required, I’m sure you can see where this is going…”

Wright nodded, a little dazed by the enormity of what he was being told.

“The Royal Cresian Empire has been pushing for a jointly settled colony for years now, but we’ve had to keep shooting them down during the war because our concerns were elsewhere, however with the discovery of this world the situation has changed somewhat,” Harrington continued. “Aside from the obvious political advantages with our allies the entire affair has another added bonus, the Apilon Rift showed us how important having a fall back position was, but we were damn lucky the Hegemony didn’t head there during the dark times, the idea here is to establish a new wing of both our Empires in order to provide ourselves with the ultimate fallback position, if the worst should happen… again.”

“What about if there are hostiles in the Andromeda Galaxy, it’s a damn big place, Ma’am,” Wright commented.

“Indeed, it is for that reason that the decision has been made that the expedition will be on the small scale, at least initially, which isn’t so much of a problem as the colony will be small to begin with whilst we get the joint nature of the entire thing worked out, the idea being that you’ll keep your heads down and not get noticed by any locals,” Harrington replied. “There is also a practical reason for that, this is an expedition, if it fails, and I’m sorry to say there is a good chance that it will fail given what we are asking you to do, we want to lose as little as possible.”

Harrington sighed.

“I don’t like thinking like that however we have to prioritise our resources, having an extra-galactic colony will be advantageous in the long-run, but in the short-term we simply can’t afford to detail an entire fleet, or even aspects of it, to a distant station that is outside of the entire galaxy,” Harrington continued bluntly. “I appreciate that we’re putting you, and whatever ship the RCE decides to send after we persuaded them the merits of keeping a low profile, but that is just the way things are, and I should note that once this is made common knowledge to your crew it will be a voluntary assignment, however we are strongly recommending that families remain behind rather than join the colony at least initially.

Wright nodded slowly, but there was a question that was bothering him.

“Why have you chosen me for this assignment, Ma’am,” He asked. “If we’re having just one Military Guardship, surely there was another officer better qualified or more experienced…”

“You sell yourself short, Captain, you were chosen because you have a reputation for hard work and getting things done with what resources you had available at the time, both of which are going to be essential if this thing is to work,” Harrington replied with a slight smile. “That’s also the reason why we let you have pretty much carte blanche in regards to your senior officers.”

“I guess that makes sense, Ma’am,” Wright nodded.

“Alright, so this is how this is going to work, the Imperial Navy is deploying one Battlecruiser, the Repulse, as well as several scout vessels and possibly a few corvettes but no promises on that one, the RCN is deploying a similarly rated vessel, we suspect it’ll be one of those new ships of theirs,” Harrington explained. “Now you are both Captains so your working relationship is going to be essential to ensuring that this get done right, there won’t be a flag officer present so the two of you will answer to the Colonial government.”

“How is the joint colonial government going to be structured,” Wright queried.

“As per the last suggestion, which to my knowledge was accepted by the Cresians, there will be a joint civil service headed up by two executives, one Imperial one Cresians, each of whom has power of veto over the other, they’ll work together in the fashion of the Consuls of Ancient Rome,” Harrington replied. “Ground defence will be the responsibility of the Imperial Marines and the Royal Cresian Marines, law enforcement will be a joint-taskforce including ISF officers, and the rest of the colonies facets will likewise be joint operations between the two of us.”

Harrington leant back in her chair.

“I’m sure I don’t need to tell you the importance of this mission. Through the fire of war they’ve become close allies of ours, in peacetime we can develop that even more,” Harrington finished. “Your orders are to proceed to the Kuiper Belt, there you’ll assume command of a convoy of a colony ship and two charted star liners from Cunard Line, wait twenty-four hours, then escort them out to the co-ordinates on that tablet, you’ll rendezvous with the Cresian contingent there, you’ll then proceed through the wormhole and as soon as the Marines complete their sweep of the ground sight the colony will be established.”

Wright nodded.

“Any questions, Captain?”

“None that I can think of at the moment, Ma’am,” Wright replied.

Captain Nathan Wright CS DSO
HMS Repulse BC-380
Andromeda Colony Rendezvous Point, Somewhere in the Delta Quadrant
Wednesday 6th April 2692

The Imperial Battlecruiser Repulse cruised at the head of a small group of Imperial Starships, the warship keeping a careful watch over its charges. The largest of these was a Colony Ship, crammed full of prefabricated structures ready to be put together, resources and big pieces of machinery and equipment, all of which would be essential in getting the colony started. The actual colonists themselves were aboard two Starliners of the Imperial Cunard Line, these large ships were specially designed to carry a large number of people in comfort across interstellar distances, usually operating on fixed routes. The Imperial Government had charted two of these vessels and crammed as many people aboard them as was physically possible. As a result of an agreement with the Cunard Line one of those Starliners would establish an ongoing route between the colony and Earth, it was a big investment but it was also a risky one (in case something went wrong out here) however a combination of being the first extragalactic contract and the incentive that the Imperial Government was giving them had convinced them to take that particular risk.

Aside from the Daring-Class Battlecruiser the Office of Fleet Operations had been able to scrounge up a quartet of Long Night-Class Corvettes, which was saying something given how essential those small but capable ships were in securing the now massive Imperial Frontier. There was also a contingent of scout vessels, but in terms of actual combat power the Repulse was the only proper warship of the Imperial Navy. Serving as the guardian for this clutch of ships was no mean feat, they all had substantial defensive capability (especially the Starliners) but the Repulse was the only source of offensive firepower, and as the old saying went you didn’t win a battle by being on the defensive the entire time; at some point you had to go on the offensive. Never the less considering the forces at his disposal Wright was confident at being able to secure the target system, sure he wouldn’t be able to hold it against a sustained assault but he would be able to ensure that the rule of law and order was maintained, and that if there was an attack coming they would find out about it soon enough to summon reinforcements.

“Captain on the Bridge!”

Wright waved his bridge crew back into their seats as he settled into the command chair at the centre of the bridge and looked over the tactical hologram at the centre of the chamber. As it had been for the past few hours it was entirely empty except for his ships, when the wormhole wasn’t open this was just another bit of deep space. At some point in the future a space station would be built here to protect its, possibly even an Overwatch-Class Battlestation depending on how the colony developed, but for now once again, subtly was deemed to be the best course, after all without getting close it was nigh impossible to detect the wormhole at all. For good measure however he would seed the area with recon drones that would report back through the wormhole to give him some forewarning if there was a surprise attack force coming through this way. Wright shook himself slightly as he accepted a cup of tea from his yeoman, it was both a blessing and a curse that he automatically felt this way, but either way it was the influence of a decade of constant warfare; and had left many in the Terran Empire pessimistic, but then if you assumed (and prepared for) the worse, you were pleasantly surprised when it turned out differently.

Wright blinked as the tactical hologram updated itself, new contacts had appeared on the display.

“Contact report,” He ordered crisply.

“It’s the Cresians,” Lieutenant Commander Alexander Munro, the ship’s Chief Tactical Officer, reported. “They’ve arrived.”

Andromeda Colony Rendezvous Point
RCNS Tharon
Captain Lorana Varcern

The ship which called itself Tharon was one of the gifted ships which the Royal Cresian Empire had received upon activation of the artificial world of Contrast. He was 993 meters long, the smallest living ship in the whole gifted navy.

And Currently floating in the command holosphere was its Captain.

Lorana Varcern was a female Cresian with black hair with red streaks and black wings. At only 25 Earth years old, she was quite overwhelmed at the prospect of guarding such a colony, especially one so far away from her family and few friends.

Lorana has been selected by Tharon when she, as a mere newly promoted Lieutenant, had come aboard her ship with an Admiral who had been curious as to the design. She'd heard her name called, stepped onto the bridge and the next thing she knew, Tharon had pulled her into the holosphere and taught her how it would work. Given the way all the ships, no matter rank, referred to those commanding them as Captains, she was promoted to Captain and given a crew to man the rest of the ship. Sure she had been good at lead small groups in a simulator, but suddenly being catapulted to CO made her feel lonely, and she could feel that behind the demanded respect for their CO, was resentment that she would get picked over more mature and knowledgeable officers.

But Tharon was teaching her commanding officer tricks and the crew sort of liked her, but it was quite a change from her last assignment aboard a destroyer where the relationship rules didn't matter and everyone generally just had a good time while off duty.

You need to stop thinking depressing thoughts Captain. Tharon chided gently through his link to her and Lorana sighed mentally.

"I know." She replied. "How far out are we?"

About 30 seconds, I'll hand over manual control to you now.

Lorana closed her eyes, shutting out the scene of the bridge and suddenly the flickering gray of nospace filled her vision. Her eyes turned to the colony ships. There were two, one of them carrying an AI which had volunteered to come out here and help manage the paperwork and direct projects if the living beings got overwhelmed.

"Dropping out in 3...2...1...now!" She said and she pulled herself back as though coming out of a dive and her ship returned to normal space, exactly where it was supposed to be. From the outside Tharon was a beautiful ship 'swim in water without getting wet' was a popular way to describe how streamline and perfect the hull was compared to most ships even in Sci-fi movies. At the moment, the ship was in its General Form, its catch-all form when it wasn't attack or in need of dire speed. Of its six engines only four were currently in use, the other two shut down. It currently had no visible weapon emplacements, but from all reports of what Izara could do, even this ship, being the smallest of its kind, could do massive damage. 9Not taking into account the fact that these ships could ram other ships and come out with little to no damage if shielded properly.) It hovered over the two colony ships, but it was alone. Given that none of the other living ships had found Captains yet and that regular navy ships would of been hopelessly outclassed by the new ship, they decided to send Tharon alone. the colony ship themselves had defenses, the Cresians weren't stupid, but just like the Terrans, they could only ward off the enemy for so long, and eventually, just defensive wouldn't do.

Lorana hovered there, her wings flapping as though she had to keep herself aloft even though she was free floating in the command holosphere, staring across space at the Terran battle cruiser for a few moments before Tharon spoke.

It is hard to look upon another ship and see it as not alive. It just does not seem natural for it to seem so dead, even with these AIs which you use.

She nodded and then opened a com channel to the Terran Battlecruiser. Her voice was that of all Cresians, musical, though hers would sound young as well.

"Terran warship, this is Captain Lorana Varcern of RCNS Tharon, we were told we were expected and may we know the name of whom we shall be working with for the foreseeable future?"

It seemed odd, for a moment, that Captain Varcern was saying we instead of I, until you remembered she talking for both herself and her ship, as long as you actually believed the ship was alive, that is.

Captain Nathan Wright CS DSO
HMS Repulse BC-380
Andromeda Colony Rendezvous Point, Somewhere in the Delta Quadrant
Wednesday 6th April 2692

“Three ships, Sir,” Lt. Commander Munro reported. “Two colony ships and what I assume to be one of those new ships of theirs.”

Wright settled back into his command chair thoughtfully. Everyone in the Imperial Navy had heard about the new warships that the Royal Cresian Navy had got its hands upon, and come up with more than a few playful insults that the RCN needed to be gifted advanced warships to beat the Imperial Navy in an exercise (whilst maintaining at the same time that they would still win). Imperial Navy R&D had of course taken to the entire affair with great interest, not only were they unsure that the aliens in question could be trusted (unlike the Cresians the Imperials were less inclined to take them at their word) but they wanted to see if they could improve their own technology in the meantime. The design of Imperial Warships wouldn’t be changing dramatically anytime soon (if ever) because of these ships. The Navy was set in its ways and they had proven generally quite successful over the years, they saw no need to change for the sake of change. As a result most Naval Officers, and especially Captains, saw these ships as curiosities more than anything else.

More concerning to Wright was who his counterpart would be over there. From what he had gathered about how they worked the ships choose their Captains, which led to some interesting choices. The last thing he wanted was some maverick or some inexperienced officer that the ship had somehow taken a liking to. When it came to experienced long-service Captains he could understand them, more to the point he could at least have an idea of how they would react or perform in a given situation. More to the point, especially if he had an inexperienced command officer, it was entirely possible that they weren’t used to (or hadn’t experienced) losing someone under their command, and the last thing he needed was the other ship to freeze up in the middle of a fight because its Captain couldn’t deal with the fact that some of their people just got killed. He would never say anything to the Cresians directly (or probably never anyway), but as far as he was concerned it was a damned stupid way of doing things, and this was an opinion shared (quietly) by many in the Imperial Navy.

And lucky him, Captain Nathan Wright got to deal with this in a situation that wasn’t routine.

“We’re receiving a transmission from the lead Cresian ship,” Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Langley, the Navigation, Operations and Communications Officer (NOC), reported from her station. “Playing now.”

Wright stroked his chin thoughtfully as he listened to the communication. The voice sounded young, and for all the reasons that he had just gone over in his head this was not a good sign, at least to him. The Cresian had identified herself as holding the rank of Captain, rather than just being the Captain of that ship, which implied that she had the say rank as he did. Never the less he was confident that he would be more senior than she was. And, hopefully, if she was as young and inexperienced as she sounded she would have the damn common sense to at least listen to him as the vastly more experienced officer. That was the hope anyway, as Admiral Harrington had said their working relationship was going to be essential for this entire enterprise and Wright hoped to god that it would be possible.

“Alright, NOC, get me a return channel please,” Wright ordered.

“Yes Sir,” Lt. Commander Langley reported. “Communications Officer, return frequency to RCNS Tharon, standard allied encryption protocols.”

“Yes Ma’am,” The Duty Communications Officer (who also happened to be the senior Communications Officer) nodded and passed on orders to her own subordinates. “Starboard communications array online and ready for transmission.”

“Channel ready, Captain,” Langley reported.

Wright nodded.

Captain Varcern, this is Captain Nathan Wright of His Majesty’s Starship Repulse. It’s good to see you, from what I’ve gathered this project has been a pipedream for a long time, I don’t think we should waste any more time. Please have your charges fall into formation with my ships and them assume the aft guard station, Repulse will lead the convoy through the wormhole. We’ve got a Colony to establish, let’s be about it, shall we? Wright Clear.

Wright settled back into his chair and watched as the Cresian ships dutifully fell into position. He didn’t know whether they were particularly please, but he wanted to make clear from the start that he considered himself to be the senior officer of the two. It wasn’t so much a case of a power trip, rather he wanted to remain in control of the situation as much as possible, and it was going to be difficult enough with an strange ship and what sounded like a young Captain.

“NOC, let’s get underway,” Wright instructed. “Rig the ship for transit.”

“Yes, Sir,” Langley nodded. “Navigation, prepare a course to take us into the wormhole, Operations, bring the ship to action stations, assume damage control state one condition Zulu.”

“Course is three-two-one, mark, one-four-six,” the Navigator reported.

“Make it so, helm,” Wright ordered and the rating manning the actual helm station engaged the course and the small clutch of starships leapt away towards it. “XO, ship’s status?”

“Ship is at action stations and rigged for transit,” Commander Twist reported. “Green across the board.”

Wright simply nodded and watched as the Repulse and its charged continued towards the wormhole. At first there was nothing then ahead of them a huge vortex of blue shining light appeared and engulfed them all. After a few moments they were inside a tunnel of blue swirling light and surging through it at quite some speed. After maybe thirty seconds they emerged from the other end back into normal space. In those thirty seconds they had all travelled further than any of any of their species had ever gone before.

“Deploy reconnaissance drones into the outer system, full coverage, anything they can’t cover send in one of the corvettes,” Wright instructed evenly. “Remain at action stations until the system is confirmed to be clear of hostile elements.”

“Course, sir?” Lt. Commander Langley enquired.

“The third planet,” Wright replied. “Let’s go see our new home.”

The planet in question was an Earth-type world. It was approximately the same distance from the star, had roughly the same gravity (so much that it wouldn’t be noticeably different) and had a naturally breathable atmosphere. All that it would require was the establishment of terrestrial food crops and that was pretty much it. Soon enough the group was in orbit over the planet and the survey work began in earnest to confirm the colony site that had been chosen by the initial scouts to find this place. After that construction robots would put the first structures together (such as the Government Hub, the accommodation and the medical centre for example), after that they could get down there and start to expand the colony alongside them.

In the meantime however.

“NOC, get me another channel to the Tharon,” Wright ordered.

“Ready, Sir,” Langley reported a short time later.

Captain Varcern. The initial work is getting underway and there’s not much the rest of us can do. In the meantime I’d like to invite you and the Cresian Consul aboard the Repulse to meet with myself and the Imperial Consul, we’re all going to be working closely together and I think we should all meet face-to-face. It’ll be dinner time aboard Repulse in approximately two hours if you can make it over then. Wright Clear.

Andromeda Colony Rendezvous Point
RCNS Tharon
Captain Lorana Varcern

Lorana watched the other ship maunver is space after that message had been sent. Captain Wright of the Repulse, he sounded like a human, stuffy and picky, though she felt sort of bad for stuffing human stereotypes onto anyone she didn't really like taking up the rear guard. Her ship was much more powerful and could take a many more blows in a surprise attack than Repulse. She fluffed up her wing feather and had been about to open a channel with Tharon interrupted her.

Calm down Captain, we'll get our chance to do something interesting eventually.

Lorana sighed and ordered her com officer relay the orders and got about taking up the position Wright wanted her to. She herself ordered the rest of the ship to action stations just in case something needed a plasma blast when they came out the other side of this wormhole and gently flew the ship forward to the wormhole. The blue light of the wormhole was an interesting sight and she had to admit being Captain had its perks, being able to see space like this. After they came out of the wromhole, she took a glance around and in her vision popped up a marker of a smudge in the endless dots that surrounded her.

Family picture anyone? Tharon said with a touch of humor and Lorana just stared at it in awe. That was her home galaxy, it was amazing. Then Tharon spoke. Moving to the third planet, looks nice from here. Lorana turned her eyes to the planet. It was beautiful, not as amazing as Cresa, but it was quite a nice planet, if her mind was interpreting the data Tharon was giving her.

New message from Captain Wright.

Lorana rolled her shoulders as Tharon pulled himself into orbit beside the battle cruiser. "Guess I'll be leaving you for a while. I'll be back though."

Alright Captain, Don't get into too much trouble our there.

Lorana smiled and then blinked back into the real world, stepping down out of the holosphere to the deck and loked over to the com officer, who waited patiently to send back a message to Wright. "Com, tell wright I'll be there at the specified time with the Consul." SHe turned her eyes to her XO, Commander George Salvui. "Commander, you have the bridge, I'm going to go get my uniform on and have Consul come over here so we can go together."

"Aye Ma'am."

Two hours later a Cresian pinnace was coming in to land on the Repulse, carrying the two requested people.

The hatch opened and the Consul stepped out first. He was a male Cresian, short, only 6' tall, blonde hair(missing the normal colored streaks) and gray wings. He was Jackson Lien, at one point a human, not a Cresian, and also a former civilian leader on one of the smaller Human colonies before its assimilation into the RCE, he'd been chosen for the simple fact that he could see things in all the ways his people would, human, and Cresian, and for the simple fact that most of the people on the colony had voted for him during his time in office rather then getting in by some cheat in the legal system. He wore a simple black suit with a white undershirt and black tie.

next was Captain Varcern. At 7' 6" she was taller than most humans by over a foot. She had black hair with red streaks tied up nicely in a bun and the uniform of a Cresian captain severely lacking any sort of decorations which might of disproved the 'young and inexperienced' way she had sounded. Here eyes were a sharp blue and she just looked young. Cresians most of the time stopped aging their body significantly at around 30, leaving most looking youthful, but gaining age physically by graying hairs, worry/laugh lines on the face and generally being filled out. Lorana looked like she hadn't quite gotten there yet, looking a bit like she belonged more in Telegett Naval Academy then she did on a warship.

However she saluted sharped. "Captain Varcern, Sir. Permission to come aboard?" She asked, in that same voice. She sounded polite enough, maybe a note of lingering annoyance, but well masked for someone who was relatively new to the ship commanding game.

Lieutenant Commander Alexander Munro MTE DSM
HMS Repulse BC-380
Andromeda Colony Rendezvous Point, Somewhere in the Delta Quadrant
Wednesday 6th April 2692

Alexander Munro sat in the Fire Direction Centre of the Quantum Disruption Beam array. Each separate part of a warship’s weapons array had its own FDC which controlled all the weapons of that type, each of which then answered to senior gunnery officer on the bridge who answered to the Chief Tactical Officer who co-ordinated all of the ships tactical systems. During action stations it was a bustling place watching over the various gun crews (some of which were manned by ratings, the larger emplacements by officers), but at any other time it was usually deserted. Except of course when officers, or sufficiently senior ratings, wanted some time alone to look out at the stars through the visual rangefinders (they were of course an incredibly unlikely back-up system, but they were there none the less). As the ship sat in orbit over the new world Alex Munro had decided that he wanted to take a few minutes to himself, he was due to join the senior staff in the dinner with the Captain and the Cresian visitors, but he had to take stock of the situation he (and everyone on the ship to be fair) had found themselves in, they were so far from home.

And so here he was sat looking through the telescopic sights at his Home Galaxy, humbled that he was one of the first fifteen hundred or so people of his species to ever see it like this, indeed as he had been on the bridge when they had come through he had been one of the very first. It was such a massive change from what he had been doing for most of his service, he had either been serving aboard combat warships during the war, or sat aboard Admiral Harrington’s flagship in orbit over Earth, this was certainly a change of pace. But then the past three years of his time in the navy had been going from one change of pace to another. In the military, and aboard a warship particularly, officers had to maintain a certain degree of separation and (by extension) couldn’t afford to let their subordinates see them uncertain. Which was why when Alex had decided that he needed time to take stock he had automatically gone somewhere he could be alone.

That was the idea anyway.

He didn’t hear the hatch open, but then it wasn’t exactly loud. He didn’t hear the footsteps on the deck plating, he was too distracted by the image of the Milky Way in front of him. The first thing he knew about not being alone was when he felt hands on his shoulders. He jumped a little and his head snapped around, suddenly aware of his surroundings again. He relaxed as he saw who it was and the arms relaxed onto his shoulders as its owner sat beside him and looked up at the stars.

“What are you thinking about?” Elizabeth Langley asked softly.

“I dunno, I guess I’m just thinking about the distances we travel,” Alex replied. “How far we’ve come and yet how far we have to still to travel.”

“Literally or figuratively?” Elizabeth frowned.

“Both,” Alex replied, then smiled slightly. “Sorry, guess I’m becoming philosophical in my old age.”

“Don’t worry about it, who could see what we are seeing and not feel at least a little like that,” Elizabeth reasoned. “I mean look at it… that’s our home galaxy, and it’s so far away… it seems so small.”

“Puts everything into perspective, doesn’t it?” Alex commented. “I reckon the skipper should spend some time looking.”

“Leave the man alone Alex, yeah he’s wound a little tight, but he saw a lot of death during the war,” Elizabeth replied. “Besides, you’ve heard the stories about those Cresian ships as much as I have, wouldn’t you be a little concerned if you were in command?”

“I suppose you have a point,” Alex shrugged. “Like always.”

“Which is why you should come to me in the first place, rather than locking yourself away in here and looking at the stars,” Elizabeth replied with a smile. “We’ve always been there for each other, that isn’t going to change just cos we’re in a different galaxy!”

Alex smiled and he put his arm around his best friend. Alex and Elizabeth had known each other for a very long time, they had met when they were teenagers, and Alex had saved her from some of the more unsavoury characters on Karin during the dark times. In the years that had passed they had become close friends. When they had joined the Imperial navy they had been separated for the first time in several years, but after two years apart they had been reunited aboard HMS Bastion, and consistently since then they had been posted to the same ship. First the Arethusa where they had both earned themselves the Distinguished Service Medal, then the Heart of Courage up until the end of the war, where like many officers they had been recognized by being inducted as a Member of the Order of the Terran Empire, and served together for two more years aboard HMS Duke of Wellington before finally being posted here to the Repulse. Clearly someone in the Admiralty had decided that they worked well together, indeed apparently Captain Wright had heard their joint reputation as he had specifically requested both of them when he took command of the Repulse.

“I know it won’t, Ebby,” Alex replied with a heavy sigh. “It’ll just take some getting used to… being out here.”

“Yeah, but we’ll get through it Alex, we’ve got through worse before,” Elizabeth said simply and squeezed his shoulder. “Hell, it can’t be worse than the War, can it?”

“I guess that,” Alex nodded, then frowned as he spotted something out the range-finder. “I say, what is that?”

Elizabeth stood up and leant forward to get a better look.

“That, my dear friend, would be the Cresian pinnace on its way over,” Elizabeth replied dryly. “Come on, we’ve got to get to the flight deck.”

Alex rolled his eyes but never the less stood up and headed for the hatch with her. He was surprised to find his No.1 uniform jacket hung up there waiting for him, he glanced over at Elizabeth and confirmed that she had been the one to bring it here, after she had changed into her own No.1s, although how she had gotten it out of his cabin he didn’t want to speculate. Never the less as he slipped his arms into the heavy woollen jacket and began to do the buttons up on the front he was relieved, he may very well have not made it if he had had to go back down to his cabin first. As it was they were moving quickly through the ships, not running as that was totally inappropriate for a pair of reasonably senior officers to be doing even if they were late. Sure enough the Cresian pinnace was on final approach as they jammed their headgear onto their heads and mustered into the line of senior officers with Captain Wright and the Imperial Consul, the former giving them a severe look.

The Cresian pinnace completed its landing and secured, a few moments later the hatch opened and the Marine honour guard snapped to attention and presented arms as the appropriate bosun’s call was made. Captain Wright watched, his expression perfectly neutral as his counterpart stepped down onto the deck as well although he felt conflicting emotions. As he had expected she was young and, based on the lack of any decorations (or hell, even campaign ribbons), inexperienced. But at the same time she was damn attractive to look at, no doubt a side effect of her youth. Of course that wasn’t exactly the more professional thoughts to be having, but it certainly stood out to Wright as she strode towards him. That being said, physical attractiveness wasn’t going to do any of them any good if they got into a combat situation and the Cresian Captain didn’t know what to do, or otherwise fucked up as a result of her inexperience. But, Wright scolded himself, he was still supposed to try his best given the situation and that, by god, was what he was going to do.

He returned the salute crisply.

“Permission granted, Captain, welcome aboard,” Wright nodded graciously. “The same goes to you Consul, welcome aboard the Repulse… if I may introduce the Imperial Consul, Sir William O’Neill.”

“A pleasure,” Sir William nodded.

“I’ll introduce my officers once we get to the Wardroom,” Wright said indicating to his line of senior officers. “If you’ll follow me.”

Wright led the not unsubstantial group of Imperial and allied personnel through the ships of his command. Away from the heavily armoured flight deck, after all it was essentially the one weak spot in the ship’s defensive armour so all steps had been taken to minimise that, and into the ship. It wasn’t long before they reached Officer Country, the part of the ship were the majority of the officer’s cabins were located as well as the wardroom and other such facilities. The Wardroom was set out much like any other, in this case a large table had been drawn up for the dinner. Arrayed around the wall and on some stands were paintings and models of the various ships that had carried the name Repulse, dating back to the British Battlecruisers and even further back. Indeed one of the larger paintings was the Battlecruiser under attack by Japanese aircraft, a stark reminder that no ship was invulnerable.

Once they were seated, with Wright at the head of the table, Commander Twist at the other, Captain Vercern and the Cresian Consul on either side of him and the Imperial Consul with the XO, and the other officers in between, he began to introduce his officers.

“Commander Olivia Twist, my Executive Officer at the other end of the table, we’ve also got Lieutenant Commander Alexander Munro, my Chief Tactical Officer, and Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Langley, my Chief Navigation, Operations and Communications Officer,” Wright introduced. “That Taïrian fellow is Lieutenant Commander Shavn, my Chief Engineer, he doesn’t say much but when he does it’s a good idea to listen and he knows this ship like the back of his hand, he helped design it, there is also Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Greg Tower, my chief Medical Officer, and last, but certainly not least, Lieutenant Colonel Harmon Post, commanding my Marine Detachment.”

As each of his officers nodded in turn Wright reflected on his lucky he actually was. To not only have two of the better tactical and NOC officers in the Fleet assigned to his ship, but also one of the designers of the Daring-Class and a top-notch medical officers, was a good catch. In terms of the Marine side he had also done incredibly well, Lieutenant Colonel Harmon Post CGC DSO MC was, as his post-nominal made abundantly clear, a man who had seen a lot of combat before. He had also served aboard HMS Reprisal when the first of these weird alien ships had been detected, so that was another bonus. All told he had one hell of a senior staff, with several of them having a reputation outside of the Imperial Navy.

“Well, I think we’re introduced, so let’s get started,” Wright smiled. “We’ve all got a busy day tomorrow once we get down on the planet, so let’s eat hearty tonight.”

Andromeda Colony
HMS Repulse
Captain Lorana Varcern

As Lorana was greeted by her fellow captain, she was too distracted to really notice any emotions directed at her. This was her first time setting foot on a real Terran ship and not some holographic projection or statistic in a simulation. Once the Terran Consul was introduced and the large group made their way to the Wardroom, she took the time to study the emotions of those around her.

As she expected, most emotions were carefully concealed, maybe a bit of annoyance that she was so young, and not experienced like Captain Wright. The Terran captain himself seemed like the competent sort, after all he wouldn't be here if he wasn't. She wasn't all that keen on human physical attraction standards, she'd stuck to Cresians during her time at the Academy, but he was looked pretty handsome by her own standards, though she was sure the fact that he was navy and in uniform was making her slightly bias. He could tell that she was an inexperienced Captain, anyone could, the lack of ribbons and decorations on her uniform spoke of that clearly and he obviously considered himself the one who would be running the show spaceside. Lorana didn't know if she would quite agree with that all the time, as she knew her ship better than anyone ever would, literally, but to keep things from going sour between them she'd probably have to listen to him 80% of the time.

She mentally shook her head as she took her seat at the table and nodded politely to each of Wright's introduced officers.

"I agree Captain, its not going to be the easiest thing our Empire's have ever done," Lein said. "Two different cultures fitting together, even when close allies, isn't going a smooth ride. I wasn't in office when the Karyxian colonies became Cresian, but I remember the transition for even the colony I lived on was a bit rough. And that was when we became one nation. I'm sure we'll get it done though, the AI we brought with us, she named herself Andromeda, after the galaxy first and mythology daughter second, is more than ready to help organize and work. She'll be operating out of the colony ship she came on until we can build her a proper core groundside."

Lorana's sharp blue eyes watched the Cresian Consul as he spoke. It was still hard to believe she was sitting her as a senior officer, she still felt all 'don't speak unless spoken to' from when she was just an Ensign sitting at the end of the table dreading the moment when she to stand up and say the toast. At the moment she couldn't find words to say, and right now, letting the Consul talk was the best course of action.

Captain Nathan Wright CS
HMS Repulse BC-380
Andromeda Colony Rendezvous Point, Somewhere in the Delta Quadrant
Wednesday 6th April 2692

“That’s good news, we’ll have to get her talking to the AI here aboard the Repulse, obviously she’s not going to be going anywhere, but given that Repulse is going to be in orbit most of the time she can serve as the space traffic control until we get a permanent space station established,” Wright replied. “Unfortunately from my interpretation of the situation, and correct me if I’m wrong Consul, is that this is supposed to be kept comparatively secret until the colony is properly set-up, we can’t allow the first joint colony to be seen to fail, if it does go wrong all of our ships and people will officially be declared missing presumed lost.”

“That’s about right,” Sir William nodded. “It’s better to lose a few ships than have the first joint colony fail.”

“Indeed, but let’s not assume defeat, shall we?” Wright commented with a slight smile. “Now here’s our food, so let’s enjoy ourselves and get to know each other, we’ll have plenty of time to discuss the business side of things over the next few days.”

The first course was nothing fancy, just Tomato soup with a few herbs sprinkled on top. Despite its simplicity it was never the less well cooked and tasted delicious, served with crisp bread and heated to just the right temperature. Once they had finished with the starter the next course was brought out in the form of a naval favourite; beef wellington served with all of the usual accompanists and vegetables and gravy. Finally the desert came in the form of a chocolate fudge cake served with cream and chocolate sauce. All of the food provided by the chefs was of good quality and well cooked, the Imperial Navy placed a high degree of importance on keeping its crews well cooked, which was why they ensured that their cooks and stewards were trained to the highest levels possible. They’d never be gourmet chefs or anything like that, but in the Navy they were well respected and had a good future outside of the Navy after they left, and like most of his crew Captain Wright had been able to get some of the best available, given that they were a very long way from home he wanted to ensure that his people were well fed until they got some good restaurants groundside established.

Once the last course was taken away by the stewards small glasses were brought in along with a decanter of port which was promptly passed around the table until everyone was full up. Wright glanced down the table at the youngest of them all, Lt. Commander Langley, and tapped his glass subtly. She saw this and stood up, holding her glass up and spoke.

“Ladies and Gentlemen… the King!”

Everyone raised their glasses but, as per tradition in the Navy, remained seated.

“The King,” Everyone intoned.

Now Wright stood up and raised his own glass.

“Ladies and Gentlemen… the Supreme Commander of the Royal Cresian Empire,” He said simply.

“The Supreme Commander,” Everyone intoned again.

Wright glanced back down at Langley who raised her glass (again).

“Ladies and Gentlemen… Ourselves!”

Everyone smiled, the unspoken retort to this one was ‘because no one else is likely to be concerned for us’, which seemed oddly fitting right now.

“Ourselves,” Everyone intoned finally.

With the toasts done tea, coffee and various cheeses were brought out and the dinner became more informal than it had been, even though it hadn’t exactly been a mess dinner. Throughout the course of the dinner, at their Captain’s request, the Imperial officers had refrained from discussing the business below. As Wright had correctly said this was about getting to know their Cresian counterparts, not beginning conversations that would take place over the next few days and weeks, right now the robots were doing all the hard work, Wright knew full well that they would all be busy when the time came, so any chance for relaxation should be taken. That approach had been true during the war and it was still true now. Over the days and weeks that were to follow they were going to need all the manpower they could find, including off-watch crews of the warships, there was only so much that the robots could do themselves and even then the more people the quicker the colony could get established. Even without the colony itself to think about they had to get a number of homesteads and farm lands set up as the colony being self-sufficient on the food front in any event. After all, when everything was considered, this place was designed as a fallback position in case everything was lost back home, in time it would be the centre of a series of colonies for that purpose.

But that was in the distant future, now they had current concerns to think about. As the meal broke up everyone separated into various other chairs which were organised in clusters around coffee tables. Captain Wright specifically sat with Captain Varcern.

“I know that I said no business tonight, but we need to discuss a few things that can’t wait,” Wright commented. “Now we obviously know next to nothing about this entire Galaxy, or the state of affairs within it, so we need to take precautions.”

Wright produced a small holo emitter and placed it on the table, it activated showing the entire system,.

“Now our recon drones have confirmed that there isn’t some bad guy waiting around the nearest gas giant, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something in the nearby systems, which may either stay there or come to us,” Wright continued. “My initial thinking is to leave both our main warships here in orbit over the colony, for one we want to consolidate our firepower where we can defend the others, and I don’t want one of our ships to be caught alone in the outer system.”

Wright manipulated his wrist-mounted panel and the hologram changed.

“My plan is to deploy the four corvettes I’ve got with me into different parts of the outer system on rotating patrol, they should detect anything that comes in and if they can handle it they’ll make the intercept, otherwise they’ll track and we’ll intercept them together with our full firepower,” Wright explained. “Meanwhile the Scouts I’ve got will be dispatched into the neighbouring systems, at the very least I want to know if we’ve got any civilizations nearby, although I’ll be honest, at least initially I really hope we don’t, that’s a complication I’m sure you’ll agree we don’t need.”

Lorana had found the dinner amazing. The cooks aboard her own ship were just as good, though they had a wider array of food to choose from thanks to the fact that Cresians ate both human and Cresian food. Once that was finished and the toast was done, she had to smile at the last part, maybe a bit morbidly perhaps, but everyone here, even Tharon had been more than willing to come out here and establish this colony. Considering that it was more or less secret, no one back home would be praying for them every night and waiting every day for new news on the colony. Once everything had broken up into the less formal part, she had acquired a cup of tea, as the Terrans made tea almost as well as the RCE did, and found Captain Wright had sat with her rather than the Consuls or his own officers.

She listened attentively to the Terran, watching the hologram of the system as he showed his plans to her.

"I think that sounds like a solid deployment plan Captain. Tharon might not appreciate it though, he likes to move around now that he has a proper crew, but he will listen to me as I am his Captain." She put down her cup of tea, slightly emphasizing that one word, eyes still studying the hologram. "And I agree that for once I hope we don't find any new civilizations out there. Considering how little we have out here, its not exactly the best show of force we could have to a new contact, especially if they turn out to be violent." She fluffed up her feathers a bit.

“Good, I mean after all our offensive capabilities with just two warships are effectively nil, so our best bet is to hope that if any hostile attacks we can hold them off for long enough for reinforcements to arrive, but as you say I honestly hope that we don’t see another living soul other than those of the expedition until we’re ready for them,” Wright said with feeling. “Now, our respective areas of concern are quite specific according to the Colonial agreement. We, that is the naval warships, have anything outside of the atmosphere which of course includes the entire system, our Marine contingents are to be kept aboard our ships and deployed to the surface if required.”

Wright glanced across at his counterpart.

“In terms of armed personnel on the surface that will be the providence of the joint police unit we’re setting up, they’ll be responsible for law enforcement as well as dealing with any aggressive native animals,” Wright commented. “The two Consuls will be in overall control of the colony and the system as a whole, however on military matters the two of us will have the principle position, even if we are supposed to answer to the Consuls.”

"I have to admit this is quite a set up we have going here." Lorana's eyes finally turned up from the hologram. "I'm sure everyone on your side realizes that anyone from our side of police force is going to be former Army or just plain Army. Sure they'll most likely be from the police branch of the Army as they get better training with civilian interaction and such, but I'm sure the colony won't have too much trouble. Aggressive animals quickly learn to stay away from Cresians."

She looked over to the two Consuls, who were chatting. "I trust Lien, he wouldn't of been selected if he wasn't trusted, but he is a civilian, unlike most Sub-Commanders of our own colonies. I wouldn't trust many people with the fine control of the firepower of my ship. He hits harder than you think, moves faster than you realize, and can jump in the blink of an eye, I'm the second person to be bonded to a ship, we're still working out the kinks, but their firepower is very useful, no matter who they select as their Captain."

She took back her cup of tea, taking a small sip. "Going to be an interesting time to say the least. Especially once the culture shock sets in."

“I know they know about it but I still don’t think they’ll be particularly pleased with it, even if they are a special military police branch of your Army they’ll still rub the Imperial Police officers the wrong way I suspect, unfortunately humanity does not have a good history when it comes to the military policing the population, in our experience it usually ends badly,” Wright replied with a non-commital shrug, grateful he didn’t have to deal with that side of things. “That being said the officers making up our contribution to this police force are from the ISF, that’s the Imperial Security Force, specifically the Imperial Star Patrol, so they are much more of a paramilitary unit so the impact should be less than it would be if it was a regular planetary or territorial police force.”

Wright shrugged again.

“I’m sure he will be,” Wright nodded, deciding now was not the best time to mention the general Imperial suspicion when it came to these ships that the Cresians had acquired for themselves.

Wright glanced across at the Consuls.

“Yes, I’m sure it will be,” He agreed. “Let’s just hope that this whole thing doesn’t turn into one gigantic mess then, shall we?”

"I, and much of the Cresian population, know the human history of military police. Considering the whole thing was established by humans who came from an Earth somewhat like yours, I wonder what compelled them to set it up that way? History classes never seem to answer that question, but it works for us and our own human population. The ones who are career policemen know they'll have to step lightly and are probably discussing the changes from the Army Police to this set up that we're going through." Lorana replied, she had been briefed by Caitlyn StarNight herself before coming out here and while the Terran Empire respected their armed forces, they were not a Constitutional Military Monarchy and as such their humans were not as likely to get behind and support their military as much as the Cresian population did. Many of the colonists that had come here were former military types, those that retired at the end of the Reconzi War and had not accepted any offcers to be taken back into service. There were civilians, but even those civilians had quite a lot of contact with the military, education in school, the Army Police, and quite a few self-defense programs were run by the military so it was more likely than not that the RCE colonists would be better in a fight then Terrans. (Not even mentioning the natural attributes of Cresians which made them quite deadly.)

She was paying attention this time around and she caught a bit of his emotions and her eyes narrowed ever so slightly. Distrust. Considering how new these ships were, there was a lot of interest in their design and distrust on her own side because the ships were alive in some way which literally could not currently be explained. She had expected the same thing, but the Supreme Commander would not of send one of the ships out here if she did not trust it. Considering that most could blast off into space without a crew of captain and never be seen again yet they stuck around waiting for a Captain instead told that these ships liked companionship and suffered through 4 million years of what was more or less stasis so they could have Captains again. Given her own talks with Tharon, it had become very clear to her that he was highly protective of her, and was more than willing to stand up for her when she needed it. Given how personal the bond was, her thoughts were no longer private to just her, Tharon knows literally everything she ever thinks about, it was hard not to defend him against doubters. It would be like if someone insulted your bondmate, or husband/wife. You wouldn't stand aside and ignore it. He was a friend, and currently really the only one she had at the moment. She was a Captain to her crew and to the Terans, the last line of defense for the colony and the most senior Cresian military officer out here. Tharon thankfully didn't look at her that way. He might call her Captain constantly, but he was a comfortable presence and she was glad she had at least one person who was willing to be there for her, even if he might be a bit bias.

She'd change the Terrans opinion eventually. They'd come to like Tharon as a personality all his own. She'd make sure of it.

"I'm sure it won't." She replied after a few moments of somewhat uncomfortable silence. "But then again if we ever get around to having large celebrations for anything, well, lets hope that the police force will be ready." She shifted slightly, a small smile on her face as she referenced Cresians infamous ability to party hard in celebration of nearly everything.

“In any event, I think that realistically the chances of a law enforcement issue in the next few months are comparatively slim, after all everyone who is on this expedition has been vetted quite substantially, so we’ve not got any known troublemakers,” Wright commented thoughtfully. “Once we open up the colony to everyone that might chance a bit, but by then both our police forces should have had time to get used to working together, even if it that is just keeping wild animals away from the colony, or more likely the more isolated homesteads.”

Wright glanced over at the Consuls again.

“Well, Captain, if you’ll excuse me I think that I should go and properly introduce myself to the Cresian Consul, we’re going to be working closely together after all and we need both Consuls to sign off on things otherwise it won’t happen,” Wright commented, then offered a hand over the table. “I’ll probably see you again tomorrow when we head down to the surface… a pleasure to meet you, Captain.”

"It was a pleasure to meet you as well." Lorana responded, shaking his hand firmly, before watching as the Terran went over to introduce himself to the Cresian Consul.

After the dinner Lorana and Lein had been taken back aboard Tharon for the night until tomorrow when the official opening of the colony would happen. As she walked through the passages of her ship to her cabin she could feel Tharon's presence in the back of her mind, waiting until she was in private. Once the hatch had shut to her day cabin the ship spoke up.

I feel you didn't cause too much trouble Captain. What do you think of Wright?

"Good Captain, more experienced than me, you saw the deployment plans?"

Yes, and I was sitting still for over 4 million years. I want to move around, do you think maybe you can convince him to let us exercise every once in a while?

"I got the feeling he doesn't really trust you. So probably not."

well eventually I'll have to get out of orbit, I mean come on seriously I can't go look around in person and I have to rely on drones?

"I know Tharon, I'm sure he'll get over it, for right now, I have to sleep, the opening ceremony is tomorrow." Lorana said as she took off her uniform and folded it in a nice pile for her steward to pick up. "Goodnight Tharon, wake me if anything happens."

Good Night Lori. The ship replied and Lorana gave a small chuckle at her nick name, crawled into bed and went to sleep.

Next day

Lorana watched as the black a space transformed into sky blue as her pinnace entered the atmosphere of this world. It'd was certainly a nice day and she was glad that it hadn't started raining or anything like that.

Soon the pinnace touched down and she stood, placing the white beret on her head and fixing her tunic slightly. It was time and she exited her craft, looking around at the progress made since the got here barely a day ago.

Captain Nathan Wright CS
Unity Colony
Epsilon Alpha Star System, Andromeda Galaxy
Thursday 7th April 2692

Captain Wright stepped from the Imperial Shuttle onto the surface of the planet for the first time and looked around. The shuttle had put him down in a large square at the centre of the colony, it was pretty empty for the moment but in time it would no doubt become the social focal point of the colony. On the northern edge of the square was the Colony Hub, a large building that would hold the offices of the Consuls and the vast majority of the civil servants who would be responsible for the administration of the entire colony. In the area behind the hub were a number of other buildings, including the Police Headquarters, Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters and other such official buildings, but there were still a number of empty plots (as there were all over the colony) for future construction of official services that the colony just didn’t need yet. On the eastern side of the colony towards a line of gently sloping hills were various buildings with fabrication and construction in mind, initially it would be from there that the colony was built and in time it would become the industrial centre of the fledgling colony.

The western side of the square was by far the most developed at this point. Row upon row of accommodation blocks that went quite far back until nearly the river that bordered the western side of the colony area, enough to house every member of the colony’s population from the get go. They weren’t exactly luxurious, but they were only a temporary fix. Within a few months they would be replaced with less densely-populated blocks, not to mention that the more well off of those on the expedition would begin to set up individual homes with their own funds on the roads that were already branching off from the main accommodation area, but for the meantime the priority was ensuring that everyone had a roof over their heads. The southern side of the colony was pretty much undeveloped, this would be the area where there would be shops, various entertainment venues and restaurants, all things of that nature. It didn’t look like much yet, but compared to what had been here before (or rather hadn’t) it was a massive development given how short a time they had been here, although it had taken its toll on some of the construction robots.

Wright glanced up at the roof of the Colony Hub, he could just see the outline of two groups of people clustered around two flagpoles, equally high. He knew that these would be the colour parties that would raise both the Imperial and the Cresian flag when the time came, in a very short time actually. He couldn’t help but smile, it really was a beautiful day, and warm enough that he had been able to put on the lightweight variant of his No.1 uniform lest he be cooked during the ceremony, which was not something that he wanted. The square was steadily filling with people, all beginning to cluster around the two podiums set up at the bottom of the steps to the Colony Hub. It was quite obvious that pretty much everyone who could be here, was here, which was not an unsubstantial amount including children for those who had elected to bring them with them. The newly-established Unity Colony Police Department were out in force, they weren’t taking any risks with such a large crowd, but they weren’t really expecting any trouble.

Wright spotted Captain Varcern in the crowd and nodded a greeting, they’d have time to talk later on. The crowd began to hush as the two Consuls appeared at the podiums and it became clear that they were about to get started. But it wasn’t time for speeches yet. Instead of facing the crowd both Consuls turned to look up at the roof. Music began to play, instead of the National Anthems of either Empire it was instead an inspirational anthem that had been chosen to represent Unity Colony, rather than face the prospect of one anthem coming before the other. As the music began to play the flags were raised, the Marines of both Empires being careful to ensure that they both went up at the same pace, the symbolism of this moment was important (hence why it was being filmed for later broadcast) and the last thing anyone in the upper echelons of the administration wanted was for it to start off on a bad food. Soon enough both flags were at the top and tied off, the flags themselves fluttering proudly in the breeze announcing the formal establishment of the first joint Terran-Cresian colony.

With that basic but symbolic ceremony complete Sir William stepped forward to the podium, the two Consuls had flipped a challenge coin before to decide who would speak first. Sir William was adorned in attire befitting the occasion, his smart business jacket adorned with the star of the Order of the Terran Empire, marking him out as he was, a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Terran Empire.

“I was informed a short time ago that this ceremony marks the one hundredth world that the Terran Empire has set roots upon. Some of our ancestors doubted that there was a need to go into space, but wiser men realised that we cannot keep all of our proverbial eggs in one equally proverbial basket,” Sir William said, his voice amplified across the square so everyone could hear it. “You, your children, and your children’s children are not just ensuring that our civilization continues to spread through the stars, but you are ensuring its immortality. You are making sure that the compositions of Beethoven survive, the writings of Sun Tzu survive, that the philosophies of Plato survive and so many more.”

Sir William paused.

“Today, the Terran Empire will see a hundred dawns on a hundred worlds, and we will not stop until there are no new dawns to be found,” Sir William continued, this last comment garnering applause from the Terrans in particular. “But this is not just our day, this day marks the first step of an entirely new relationship between us and our Cresian friends. We move away from just being military allies to civic and cultural partners.”

Sir William paused again.

“We’ve been through so much together, we helped them finally defeat the last vestiges of their greatest enemy, they helped us reclaim our Homeworld at long last from the forces of oppression and tyranny, both have bled for the other so that we may have this peace that we enjoy today,” Sir William continued. “We’ve won the peace, ladies and gentlemen, let’s make sure that we make the most of it! Now, I’m sure my Co-Consul wishes to say a few words as well, so Ladies and Gentlemen, Consul Jackson Lien.

Andromeda Unity Colony
Captain Lorana Varcern

Lorana smiled as she watched a pair of children ran past her weaving through the crowd in a game of tag. Their coordination and agility meant they were Cresian, she hadn't had time to catch sight of their wings before they were lost in the crowd. She spotted quite a few Namerian family groups here, a few with small children as well.= and she could easily tell by the various clothes the humans were wearing which Empire they originated from.

She looked up as she felt a familiar presence and nodded back as she spotted Wright. Her attention was drawn to the podiums as the Consuls stepped up and looked up to the flags. She watched as the flags finally reached to top of their respective poles her attention turned to Sir William as he began speaking.

The Cresian in the crowd (both the race and people) listened intently to the man as he spoke, many applauding when Sir William mentioned the Reconzi.

It was Liens turn to speak and he stepped up to his own podium. He was dressed formally as well, in a suit a bit more sharp than the one he had worn to the dinner yesterday.

He looked out upon the crowd and spoke,

"Thank you Sir William, and while this is a milestone for the Royal Cresian Empire as well, I'm afraid its not quite as impressive as the Terran Empire's." He paused for a few moments. "This world will be the 25th colony on which a Cresian flag has been raised. So we have a bit of catching up to do in terms of colonization." There were a few laughs from the crowd.

"If this ceremony had taken place on a purely Cresian colony, we would of done this at night, when the stars are out. We do this for the simple reason to show where we originated from. Cresa, Karyx, Thal'il Narom'yt, Earth. The worlds from which we we all descend, where our ancestors had been born and raised, were we all began. As of right now, no single home planet could picked our from where we stand, rather, we get the unique experience of being the first of our Empires to see the Milky Way from outside its stars. This is how far we have come, both as our own Empires and as allies."

He took a small pause.

"But being here is not just about showing off that we've reached a special marker, or that the Terran Empire finally caved to the Royal Cresian Empire's requests for a jointly settled colony. This is about preserving our Empires. The art, culture, writings, traditions, names and people. This is about expanding relationships and learning new things. Now with this world, we will learn about each other, experience our ways of life, share traditions and maybe form a few of our very own. It might not be easy, it will probably be one of the hardest things both of our Empires have done, but in the end it will be worth it for everyone here today and those who have yet to join us. Ladies, Gentlemen, Guardians and Foragers," The last tow referencing the two extra genders that the Namerians had and of which there were some in the crowd, "Unity Colony is yours, lets be about it!"

He took a small step back and smiled as all the crowd broke into applause, referencing the famous quote used by Jessica Harrington known by just about all citizens of both Empires.

Lorana smiled and watched as the crowd went about their business. She grinned as she saw a Cresian human child shyly approach a Terran child about the same age and ask to play. When the parents said yes, the Cresian child proceeded to play tag under the watch of both pairs of parents/

Nice speeches. Tharon's voice echoed in her mind. 100 planets for the Terrans, 25 for yourself. That's not a bad colony count.

Lorana nodded but did not reply, content to just watch the crowd go about what they needed to do.

Chief Inspector Jennifer Fox IPM
Unity Colony
Epsilon Alpha Star System, Andromeda Galaxy
Thursday 28th April 2692

Nearly three weeks had passed since the establishment of the colony and things were proceeding apace. Whilst the main settlement itself hadn’t changed all that much the area around it had, substantially. There was a great deal of flat plains between the river to the west and the gently rolling hills to the east, both to the south and north of the colony, it was good, fertile land and in the three weeks that had passed the task of turning it from virgin land into the future food source of the colony. The people, from both Empires, who would be operating these farms had been chosen well in advance and their land had been carefully planned out even before the colony had been established to prevent any issues. Each of the Farms had been established around a Homestead which was home to the main family and a number of workers. As a result although the population of the colony hadn’t changed it was now spread over a lot more land both to the north and south of the main settlement. Of course it would be an entire season at the least before they got any crops, but it was another milestone for them.

Chief Inspector Jennifer Fox looked out at the colony as she drove her personal patrol cruise along the streets. The busy work of the developing colony was still ongoing, both within the confines of the settlement itself but also far beyond, everyone had been working hard for the past few weeks and the Unity Colony Police Department were no different. For the most part the UCPD had been carrying out two main roles, the first was patrolling the entire area of the colony, the standard stuff as well as looking out for large animals, one of which was a fairly huge creature that looked much like a bear but with six legs. The other was helping out with the construction and development work that was taking place all over the colony area, a lot of it simply required a great deal of manpower and one way or another the UCPD could provide a decent amount of organised manpower whilst at the same time building the vital trust between a population and those who enforced the law in their name.

Chief Inspector Fox was the third-ranking enforcement officer in Unity Colony. Given the size of the colony it was still a comparatively small police force, only a few hundred officers total, she was the officer responsible for co-ordinating the activities of three watches of police officers, from both Empires. The entire force was commanded by an officer of the Imperial Star Patrol, specifically Superintendent Jonathan Reynolds, with a Cresian officer as second in command. Again as a result of the colony’s small size all of the officers were armed with pulse weapons, instead of the energy weapons that were typical for Imperial police forces as, although those weapons could kill if they had to (and the suspect was unarmoured) they were designed to stun. In a situation like this one of the very real possibilities was that a large, aggressive animal might stray too close to the colony, in which case stun weapons might not put them down, whereas the massive stopping power and sheer damage potential of a pulse weapon would be essential, not to mention that they served as a de facto militia for the defence of the colony (part of the reason why any small colony like this was provided with a force by the Imperial Star Patrol).

Chief Inspector Fox had made her name in the Terran Empire, and to a lesser extent to those who followed Imperial Politics in the Royal Cresian Empire, back during the incident between House Harrington and House Stark. When the second son of the Duke of New Washington had turned up dead, apparently at the hands of Highlady Harrington, Fox, a Detective Inspector at the time, had not believed the evidence against the Highlady and with the subtle support of the King himself had set out to prove the Highlady’s name on an audacious investigation that had taken her all the way to New Vegas, the seedy pleasure planet of the Atlantia Sector. But she had done it, averted a House War in the process, and been awarded the Imperial Police Medal for her actions. When Superintendent Reynolds had been looking for a third in command (as he had been told he needed a Cresian second, Fox, who had been promoted to Chief Inspector, had been at the top of a very short list.

As the Chief of Operations it fell to Fox to make sure that everything was running right. The Superintendent and his Cresian second in command were responsible for the overall policing policy and the administration, Fox was responsible for carrying it out, with her own staff of both Imperials and Cresians, the three patrol watches of between sixty and eighty officers spread into shifts as well as the air unit flying the Enforcer-Class Enforcement Fighter of the Imperial Star Patrol. Overall however it was a small force but then it wasn’t exactly a massive area of responsibility and the actual likelihood of anything more than minor crimes was extremely low. Indeed in the past three weeks there had only been a handful of arrests, mainly drunk and disorderly and a few for Breach of the King’s Peace in other capacities, and one of them had resulted in anything more substantial than a Police Caution and allowing the individuals in question to get back to work. They had also spent the time getting the lay of the land, in only a matter of months when the colony became common knowledge they were going to attract more colonists, some un-vetted, not to mention no doubt some criminal elements trying to take advantage of other law-abiding citizens.

“Sierra Oscar Three from Sierra Oscar.”

Fox glanced down at her communicator as the voice of the dispatcher at headquarters, dubbed Sierra Oscar, radioed her.

“Go for Sierra Oscar Three,”

“Sierra Oscar Three, we’ve got reported sightings of one of those bear creatures heading towards the settlement out of the hills, we’ve not got homesteads in between it and them so we’ve got some concerned people,” The Dispatcher replied. “Sierra Oscar One wants you to take units over there to deal with it.”

“Sierra Oscar, roger that, on my way,” Fox replied as she flipped on the lights and sirens and spun the car away and began to speed towards the eastern side of the colony. “Sierra Oscar Three to all units in the area, converge on the eastern perimeter, dangerous life form in the area, await my arrival unless creature advances towards civilians.”

Andromeda Unity Colony
Ethan McCarthy

Ethan was not use to being sent to way out of the way places. He preferred civilization. This colony was most definitely 'way out of the way.' He'd technically volunteered, and sure, being in Andromeda on the first joint colony was certainly something to brag about, but he'd had more than a little needling from his superiors to go anyways. If this colony made it, he'd be the start to a network of connections on the new colony, if they got separated, he could, if he wished, start a new NIBS, though getting the money to run the operation like they did back home would be a pain in the ass, if the colony failed, well, at least he would be dead along with everyone else. He had read the files on the Cresian second in command, a former Army Police Cresian Herald Shue, good man, too Army to be in direct command for the whole time or else it would become the Army Police.

He was part of police force, a proper police force, not a branch of the Army, and it felt nice to be civilian policeman again. He noticed that the third in command was none other than Jennifer Fox, but he'd more or less kept his head down and did what he was told to try avoid catching her attention. He looked up from the hologram he was studying as the communicator in his car came to life. Eastern perimeter, dangerous wildlife, those large bear-things again? He flipped on his own lights and darted out of his hiding place from where he had been watching the streets for any lawbreakers and sped off to the eastern perimeter.

By the time her got there a few other cars had already arrived, most likely those which had been on patrols near the perimeter, and he parked his own car, and pulled his own pulse rifle from its holder as he looked out and saw the six-legged bear thing mulling around. He saw Jennifer's car arrive and he wondered what exactly they were going to do.

Thursday 28th April 2692

Fox looked critically over her officers as she drove the last few meters towards where they were waiting for her. They had set their vehicles up in a make-shift barricade, behind which they were taking cover, their pulse rifles shouldered and pointing at the bear-creature, which some of the scientists on this expedition were calling Ursus Maximus (or as Fox had heard some of the Marines say when the had seen one; ‘that big fuck-off bear’), that was still wandering around. She nodded to herself, that was a standard formation and in a firefight would serve them well, as their vehicles were sufficiently armoured to provide both concealment and cover from enemy fire, as opposed to the police cruisers of Old Earth which only provided the former, despite what the old films might like to say. She noted that there were both Terran and Cresian units responding and was satisfied at that, as well as the way they had set up a fairly smart looking perimeter in short order, that gave her a good feeling that they’d do okay if they were facing down anything more scary than a single bear.

That being said the bear wasn’t exactly unformidable. Its sheer size gave it massive power as well as the ability to shrug off damage, they had tried shooting the first one with stun weapons and it hadn’t even had any effect. They had then switched to their deadly weapons and engaged it with that, it had taken a few hits before the damn thing went down. As a result the two Consuls had dictated that any bear that was seen within a few miles of even the outermost homestead was to be tracked and if it started coming towards the city it was to be put down, it could do a lot of damage in the settlement if it was allowed to roam free. Few in the UCPD felt particularly proud about putting down the majestic creatures but, never the less, it was something that had to be done, hopefully after a while they would learn to stay away from the settlement least they get shot by the settlements law enforcement. But if, for a while at least, that was the only threat that the UCPD really had to face Fox would be grateful.

She pulled up her cruiser behind the main line and grabbed her own pulse rifle from its holder in between the two seats and moved quickly towards the line where she hunkered down with some of her officers and took a good look at the bear as it wandered about. If they, and it, were lucky it would turn around and head back into the hills where it belonged. Unfortunately for all of them it turned around and began ambling towards the settlement. It didn’t look like much of a threat yet but Fox had seen what it could do if it worked up momentum and had no wish to see that in her colony. She shouldered he weapon and sighted.

“Fire!” She shouted loudly and pulled the trigger.

McCarthy shouldered his pulse rifle, took aim and fired along with the other police officers.

The shots went home fairly quickly and the first few seemed to make it mad and it gave a low growl/rumble noise and reared up to look where the shots were coming from. Ethan placed another shot into it, right at the neck, and it fell back down it its six paws and soon was overwhelmed by fire and flopped over onto the ground, dead.

He clicked the safety of his weapon back on, watching as a few officers looked up at he massive heap of fur and a Cresian called out that it was finally dead as he felt it take its last breath. He shook his head. These bears were pretty awesome things, too bad they had to be put down or risk damage, destruction and death. He certainly wouldn't want those things running around any city he'd care to name.

"Those bears are amazing, too bad we have to put them down if they get too close." He said. "Not exactly the creature you want rummaging around in your trash."

Fox watched as the bear went down under the torrent of fire that it had been subjected to. It really was sad, it was a majestic, powerful creature but it was a danger to the colony, and unfortunately the lives of the colonists simply had to come first. This expedition was too important to risk failure because of the local wildlife. It was by far the most prevalent but there were also undoubtedly other types of wildlife further away that might cause a risk, after all it stood to reason that a species as powerful as the Andromeda Bears would be the apex predator of their area, but that didn’t mean that there weren’t others that happened to live further away that they had not been encountered yet. But then, if these creatures were the biggest problem they were going to have to deal with for the immediate future, she wasn’t about to start complaining and wish for targets that shot back, that would only get people killed, not something she wanted in the slightest.

She turned as she heard a voice she recognized, and a quick glance confirmed the identification.

“Ethan McCarthy as I live and breathe,” Fox smiled broadly. “I didn’t even know you were on the force, you’ve been keeping a low profile.”

Ethan hadn't realized he'd spoken loud enough for Jennifer to hear and the second he heard his name his silver colored eyes snapped to her.

"If i had a high profile, it would be because I've been getting in trouble, a low profile is much better. Hasn't exactly been long enough in distinguish myself anyways." He answered. "Feels nice to not be in the Army while policing for once. I'm old school."

He quickly rechecked the safety and ammo levels of his pulse rifle and then placed it back in its holder, watching a couple officers crept up to the bear with their rifles drawn to check it over again.

"Any particular reason you're out here on this colony Chief?"

“When the Superintendent was setting up his senior staff he specifically requested me, it seems that affair with the Highlords has made a name of sorts for myself, and that’s why I ended up out here,” Fox replied. “Besides, who in their right mind would give up an opportunity like this, especially for myself as when we get a Star Patrol contingent out here, I’ve been promised command of one of the new cutters, so that’s a nice extra boon.”

Fox glanced across at the bear.

“It is such a damn shame about those things, unfortunately as you say they are just too dangerous to be allowed to roam around,” She commented. “Fortunately both our scouts and our sensor data indicate that there is a more than healthy population of them, as long as the learn to stay away from civilization, we shouldn’t cause too much long term damage.”

"I would of passed up the opportunity." Ethan said. "I like built up places and large crowds, but someone managed to convince me to come here. Its been a quiet job so far, definitely much more action in the crowded planets like Cresa or Karyx."

He paused for a second as a Cresian poked the bear with his rifle and when it didn't move looked very relieved, even though another Cresian had already confirmed its death. "But quiet is good in my book. As long as its just the bears, I think I can live with it, if it shoots back, then we have a problem." He shifted slightly, feeling the sore muscles in his back and made a mental note to have someone check the chip in his arm over to make sure it was still working. "I would offer to buy you a drink after shift, but there are not any bars down here yet, so lets say I owe you one when they get all the important things in life like bars set up."

“True, although for the Star Patrol a lot of it is about career progression, I mean once this place gets its own police service established in a few years those of us from the Patrol will set up the sector command, which if course means promotions for pretty much everyone,” Fox commented with just a hint of cynicism. “And of course everyone out here is getting paid a substantial bonus to be here, and for once we’ve been allowed to bring our families to our postings, which is understandable I suppose, even if I don’t have a family of my own to do that for.”

Fox glanced over at him

“I’ll have to remember that, I’ve never said no to a drink before, not going to start now,” She grinned. “Although I understand that the Marines that come down every night bring some with them, but they’re not causing any trouble so we’ve not seen the need to bust them for public drinking as long as they keep it subtle, or ideally, in homes.”

Fox rolled her eyes and glanced across at where some local children had come to inspect the downed bear.

“Ah, that reminds me, I’ve been getting a number of calls about children running around the streets without supervision, now most of these are Cresian apparently, but some of them have been convincing Terran kids to abscond from their parents,” Fox commented with another roll of her eyes. “I’ve not done anything about this yet, but I might have to make some sort of announcement… there’s some pretty irate parents out there, especially of the younger kids, thankfully that lot…”

Here she jabbed her finger at the kids that had gathered.

“Are all old enough to look after themselves, but even so with those bear-things about...” she finished. “I’m assuming this is some sort of cultural difference, but its concerning a lot of people.”
