Pluto: Planet or Not?

Postby Indian Empire » Fri Apr 04, 2014 3:47 pm

Welcome to the newest debate topic on NS, the SPACE DEBATE.

Image

This is part one of the series, on Pluto

The question is: Is Pluto a planet, or just a iceball of the Kuiper Belt?

Well, for me, Pluto is a planet despite it's orbit and distance from the sun. I say this because it gets closer to the sun than Neptune at times. I feel like any object in space that is not a moon, space probe, or asteroid that gets closer to the sun than Neptune, it is a planet.

So, Planet? Not? Please state why with your answer. And stay tuned for next episode, on the Kuiper Belt!!!

You evidently do not know what the definition of a planet is.

Pluto is not a planet. It is a dwarf planet.

Yes. Pluto is a Planet. If Pluto is 2nd largest in the Kuiper belt, then why not classify the biggest one as a planet as well?

Because Pluto isn't classified as a planet. It doesn't fit the scientific criteria to be one. If you disagree with those criteria, that doesn't change the fact that Pluto doesn't meet science's guidelines for a planet.

It's not a debate when one side is objectively right. Pluto is not a planet.

Either way.

Honestly, I grew with Pluto being a planet and nine is a nice number, three threes. Then again, eight is two cubed, also a nice number, so from a numerological standpoint it's kind of a wash.

Apparently the researches that those who have spent their entire lives to astronomy and astrophysics is irrelevant when classifying celestial bodies.

Well of course it's not a fucking planet. If the scientists who call it a dwarf planet then it's a dwarf planet. You don't go around claiming that a dog is asdkjszvcnkmsbnkghsef. Why the fuck would you call it a planet when you don't even fucking study the damn subject?

Arch's people called dogs "asdkjszvcnkmsbnkghsev." Funny word.

Anyway, the people who first called Pluto a planet were not amateurs, you know - if I read you right. Times and data change.

Less than 5 percent of the Astronomers present voted in favour of the declassification of Pluto, so it was hardly a unanimous verdict. The science behind Pluto not being a planet is also pretty sketchy (probably why so few scientists supported the motion) and calls into question weather Earth is even a planet (according to the new guidelines), for example the main reason that Pluto is "no longer a planet" is because it doesn't clear its own orbit, but neither does the Earth (since the Earth regularly comes into contact with asteroids in and near its orbit). The subject is a lot more complex and flawed than you and others are making it out to be.

These criteria's change all the time and will probably change again.

No, it's a dog. I mean it looks like a big dog. But a planet? Come on.

.....

Sorry that's all I got. I guess I can quote the character Gus from Psych, you know when he picks up chicks and talks about how messed up Pluto not being a planet is. But the show hasn't been good in awhile, and I just try not to think about it, except the earlier seasons.

Just though it would be worth mentioning, I'm not saying that Pluto IS a planet, but people are acting like the declassification of Pluto was some unanimous decision that every Scientist agrees with and that only brainless idiots are against. When in reality it was a very unpopular decision that is still hotly debated by astronomers.

I would like to point out that the distinction between "planet" and "dwarf planet" is just used for easy categorization of objects, and has very little relevance outside the realm of cataloguing. The whole problem is that people have strong emotions regarding the term "planet".

Pluto is a dwarf planet, not a planet. Although I wouldn't call it a ball of ice in the Kuiper Belt.
