Which makes sense, because England just means 'Land of the Angles', who were so called because they were thought to be Angelic in appearance.

But it's the only such place where stuff ends in Terra besides Finisterra (Brittany).

So in a way it really sounds kickass. It was supposed to be Ânglia/Ínglia, but no, they said fuck it, we'll be unique in your languages too.

Sure, in English it would be a perfectly okay strategy. But surely not in Portuguese.

No one said "URSS" either, it was always "União Soviética".

So, you called the Soviets the Soviet Union, not Russia, but you won't call the Brits the United Kingdom, instead of the (incorrect) England?

I kid, of course.

I have the honor to know some particular Angles who really do look beautiful, so appearance is definitely not one of your country's downsides.

(Hint: the actually real downside is food. I don't know why all your TV channels give adverts for stores saying 'We use only British and Irish meat', because your meat is horrible.)

My point is that it isn't gross.

I never saw haggis, but I know buxada de bode. And dude, that just stinks. Doesn't matter how much tasty it can be (I wouldn't eat it because they put a ton of hot chili in it), the smell is not at all inviting.

I'm biased to be saying that though, because I'm extremely picky with anything derived from animals.

On what grounds? Few people can speak it fluently in the Republic of Ireland, and even less people in N.Ireland, whats more the man clearly had no problem speaking in English beforehand.

United Regions of Verona wrote:I think the British should put up signs in Northern Ireland listing the languages you can speak in if the police asks a question, because I haven't found any law prohibiting the Irish language.

Again, its not the fact that he spoke Irish, but that he did so when providing information when he was able to do so in English.

United Regions of Verona wrote:
I do get it.

But a country should realise that there are other languages. And not arrest them, but try and get him to do something, perhaps write it down or get a translator or something.

Which there was no need to do because he was fully able to speak English.

I've never once heard that claim before. And, unfortunately, it isn't correct. England means Land of the Angles, yes, but the name of the Angles has nothing to do with being Angelic. The area that the Angles originally inhabited is Angeln in Modern German, and comes from the germanic root - ultimately meaning "the Narrow [Water]". When the Angles came to Britain they brought their name with them, and eventually Angelcynn/Angelfolc evolved into Englaland due to a front mutation in the English language. This evolved into Engeland, and finally into England.

There is a law regarding providing details to the best of a persons ability under the Justice and Security Act, as it says in the article, and probably other laws as well about providing details to the police. This person can speak English, and it seems as though they had a conversation in English prior to him being requested to provide his address.

Now, I find it unlikely that they didn't ask him to provide the address in English after he said it in Irish. This would suggest he was doing this to be difficult, which will get you in trouble with the police for obvious reasons. Had this man been unable to speak English there probably wouldn't have been a problem, but that fact that he could and chose not to was what likely got him in trouble.

Coming from the Republic of Ireland I think the PSNI is wrong but the suspect lives in Dublin far away from any Irish Speaking Area. The only people in Ireland who can't speak English are..................... Immigrants. He's not an immigrant. The PSNI are still wrong though. It's probably a bunch of Unionist Dickheads who handled the case.

Options :

1. The same reason the PSNI act like dicks, because they can.

2. Attachment to cultural background

Feel free to add to the list. The PSNI are not showing sensitivity towards the communities they police if they didn't think this would end as it did. Instead of using the JSA to throw their weight around they could have taken the sting out of what they perceived to be obstructive behaviour by simply using the same interpretive avenues they would for monolingual foreign nationals.

The Creggan has a pretty strong background with the Irish language (I'm from the area) particularly as a reaction to the days of Free Derry. As a kid myself and many others would have days with 'no béarla' to maintain our fluency and to do our bit to maintain our cultural heritage. To ignore the strongly held views on the matter shows the PSNI will, as per NI policing usual, distance themselves from the communities they purport to protect and then bitch and moan when they receive little cooperation. Fuck them.
