THE FINEBERG TIMES

Space—the Next Frontier!

by Annabelle Barca
FINEBERG, New Edom— Microsatellites are here! Also known as cubesats, though they can be in a variety of shapes, the small satellites are being used as a series of experiments by academic institutions in response to a promotional free series of launches from the propulsion platform in Callaban. The National Science Director, Dr. Nestor Khalkimedes, reported with great excitement that “This is a wonderful new era for science in the region. I am very proud of our institutions which have demonstrated what they can do with additional funding and research.”

Some of the experiments being done include the following:

Radiosat 2 is an experiment in using microsatellites for radio communications to improve emergency communication systems for off the grid districts in New Edom and similar nations. It is intended to involve a network of 22 cubesats which will enable a constant connection web. It is to be partnered with Project Hermes is a research project by graduate students at Gone Polytechnic to study the viability of small mobile orbital communications platforms for small communities to be able to use telephone communications without cell phone towers. It will enable better information and financial systems to reach small New Edomite communities.

The Hyperion Project is a weather observation study intended to act as a sub-regional stormwatch for the western oceanic region of the Cornellian Empire. It will be used to track weather patterns and enable disaster preparedness not only for New Edom but also for Nalaya, the Late Roman Empire and other Northern Belisarian nations, Gehenna Tartarus and the Ceti nations. Funding for this project has come from the Ministry of Education as well as alumni of Fineberg University.

Operation LowHigh is an engineering project. A network of 20 cubesats intended to be in a dormant state to be 'wakened' at variously timed or programmed operational statuses. The cubesats will largely be for photographic imagining of key areas for the purpose of environmental engineering in case of such potential disasters as floods, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and forest fires.

Operation Ursa Minor is a project to send a number of Tardigrades (also known as waterbears or moss piglets) which are small eight limbed segmented animals which can can withstand temperatures from just above absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water, pressures about six times greater than those found in the deepest ocean trenches, ionizing radiation at doses hundreds of times higher than the lethal dose for a human, and the vacuum of outer space. They can go without food or water for more than 10 years, drying out to the point where they are 3% or less water, only to rehydrate, forage, and reproduce.

This project is an effort to explore the limits of the creatures' ability to withstand space conditions in an enclosed environment. It will be used to propose a joint project with the Lamonian national space agency's shuttle to recover the cubesats containing and monitoring the creatures for later analysis. Equipment will be placed on the cubesats for helping monitor their conditions.

Ultimately, future experiments are expected by the National Space Agency which is part of the Directorate of National Science. Admiral Charles Rand, the Minister of Transport, and Dr. Khalkimedes are expected to represent the nation at the launch.
"The three articles of Civil Service faith: it takes longer to do things quickly, it's far more expensive to do things cheaply, and it's more democratic to do things in secret." - Jim Hacker "Yes Minister"

New navigation system takes flight
Image

6 September 2014

WYNDHAM, Alebcay - Crowds watched from the cargo terminal at Wyndham Metropolitan International Airport yesterday as an aircraft carrying the first components of a new satellite navigation system dubbed NavMesh, which is built off of the EACARS, or enhanced aircraft collision and avoidance system, to a launch facility in Callaban took off from runway 13. The components are being launched into space as part of the CubeSat initiative, a space program commissioned by the Incorporated States of Callaban. NavMesh was one of of only a handful of projects accepted for deployment through the program. Once deployed, the four units aboard will enter geosynchronous orbit and be able to provide limited assistance to aircraft within range for communications, weather, navigation, and collision avoidance information.

Scientists at the Alebcay National Aeronautics Institute in Booker developed the open-source protocol and many were excited to be present at the event. The project director spoke briefly, noting with great pride that "The beauty of the system is that it is an open protocol. This allows for us, or any other nation, to deploy units in the future that can be readily integrated with the existing system." He also noted that while the current system is only being utilized by aircraft, it is completely viable to include the technology in automobiles, marine vessels, and other vehicles. "The possibilities are amazing. While we developed this with aircraft in mind, it can easily work with cars and ships without any modification to the satellites or the protocol. In fact, all that remains is designing capable adapters to be fitted into vehicles and market adoption of the technology."

Several other notable figures were also present in the terminal. The CEO of Spirit Avionics, an Alebcay-based company that assisted in development, Vincent Merrick, was present and seemed to be in an ecstatic mood. "It's always exciting to see our work come to fruition and see use in the real world", he said as the aircraft lifted off the ground.

The technology has seen slow adoption within the airline industry, but it is expected to accelerate as the system becomes fully function. It is currently used in all Alebcay-based budgetAir aircraft, as well as in all aircraft used by Woodsteadean airline Millenium Airways and all aircraft manufactured by Globus-based Kestrel Aeronautics.

NavWind is expected to assume full operation of it's existing units by October 3rd.

We are Going Back!

September 6,2014
Achievement City-Pimps Inc - The crowds have gathered and the champagne is out in order to celebrate the first Pimps to go into space since 1997.After the Pimps Aeronautics and Space Agency is set to receive a new technology from the nation of Callaban at no cost, the agency has gone wild.People have been prevented from actually seeing the technology-dubbed Cubesat-since the shipment arrived at Zancudo Air Base in the outskirts of Achievement City at around 9:00 AM.According to a statement by the PASA,"We are joyous to announce that we will be sending Pimps into space for the first time since 1997 in order to allow research to be done on Solar activity and how it affects out modern technology and the study of the moons phases. This project will cost around 1.7 Billion dollars and we expect that Project Apollo and Artemis will be successful."
