Is Mormonism Christianity?

Postby Bordav » Fri Jan 31, 2014 11:19 am

As a member of an Eastern Orthodox Church I say no, because they do not believe that Jesus atoned for sins, but what do you think?

Absolutely not. They aren't a cult, but they certainly are not Christian.

Yes. They are a rather unusual sect of Christianity, but still Christian nonetheless.

Well that is not the definition of a Christian. A Christian believes that Jesus is the son of God as well as a prophet and Saviour.

Its a branch of Christianity, sure. I wouldn't say that it's very orthodox in its beliefs, but Jesus is a part of their religion.

And that's what the Mormons believe last I checked.

On the one hand, yes because they call themselves so and who's really to define who is or isn't a "true" Christian

On the other hand (it is my understanding that) they are about as Christian as Islam so I'm tempted to say no.

They also believe he came back again, which goes against the Niece Creed. If you brake anything in that, you aren't a Christian.

You are right, the Nicene Creed is a Universal Christian creed, it is used to detect if a church is a cult.

If they believe in Christ and his upmost divinity as a virgin born son of God, I think they fit the definition.

I can attest to that. When I was a Mormon in Sunday school, the prophet status of Jesus was emphasized.

Not all Christians necessarily believe he was the literal son of God, nor do they all believe that he was divine in origin.

There is more to Christianity, Christianity is a religious walk through this world with God. But in order to obtain it we must believe Jesus atoned for sins, which Mormons do not believe.

But they do not accept him as a sacrifice fully atoning for sins.
