Dave Mustaine, more from a writing sense than playing, but he is fantastic at that as well.

Marty Friedman

Paul Gilbert

Jason Becker

Steve Vai

Joe Satriani

There are many, many more who completely overpower the people on your list that aren't Yngwie, whose only real talent lies in his precise fingering and sweep picking, tbh.

For "Others" I'd say:

David Rawlings (of Gillian Welch fame)

and

Django Reinhardt (of Gypsy Jazz fame)

I personally voted for Jimi Hendrix, but I really think Roy Clark deserves mention. Outstanding ability without gadgetry.

No votes fro Jimmy page? He's not a genius in Stairway to Heaven? Personally, since it is one of the most played song on guitar, Jimmy page should have alot of credit.

This really has to be won by Hendrix. All the guitarists on this list are technically excellent but he reinvented the instrument.

Steve Vai wanks his guitar, Hendrix makes love to it.* You can hear the difference.

I think the acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela deserve recognition too. They are outstanding and don't have to rely on studio overdubs or distortion to make their music compelling and impressive. Check this link:

PS. Where is Dimebag on this list?

(*Not literally, obviously)

My vote was for Hendrix as well. However, if the question was still playing today, I think Steve Kimock would get my vote.

Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and B. B. King are my favorites. Jimi Hendrix was mediocre at best: he was more show than anything else. Clapton's work with Cream was phenomenal, especially on Disraeli Gears.

I don't know i recognise Hendrix was amazing with the guitar, but i've listened to a number of his songs and they're pretty rubbish really.

The Layla album is closest thing to perfection that I've found. The title track is incredible on its own, but "Bell Bottom Blues," "Anyday," and "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" are great, as well. The pure emotion that Clapton put into the album is astounding.

Steve Howe
David Gilmour
Mike Oldfield
The world is not cyclical, not eternal or immutable, but endlessly transforms itself, and never goes back, and we can assist in that transformation.

Live on, survive, for the earth gives forth wonders. It may swallow your heart, but the wonders keep on coming. You stand before them bareheaded, shriven. What is expected of you is attention.
