Is Music dying?

Postby Blasveck » Sun Nov 10, 2013 7:10 pm

Is Music, as a genre, dying?

Now, when I say dying, I'm talking about the quality of music, really. With a saturation of mainstream* artists resorting to using autotune and phasing out of actual instruments, I feel music, as a genre and the quality of it, is dying.

Perhaps this is just the ramblings of a musically-inclined teen, but when I see the music that is produced today, what I don't see is the Beatles, the Jimi Hendrixes, the Elvises, etc.

What do you think, NS? Is the quality of music slacking as of late?

Oh, absolutely, OP. Music has been in an inexorable decline since its apogee at the death of Brahms.

No. Music does not die. It's actually very widespread now.

BUT it can suck. :p

If all you do is listen to the mainstream pop music, it may seem like that, but there's still new music coming out that isn't entirely auto-tuned.

It's like asking if Arwen is dying. It's a certain fact Arwen's dying, but why is a better question. I suspect autotune has replaced talent with physical appearance to the point that concerts are greatly disappointing.

Considering the elaborate symphonies of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Schubert and all other historic music giants used to be the popular music of the time, yes it's safe to say that music will be six feet under in a few generations.

The quality of music is subjective. Though in my personal, all-so-humble opinion I have to say no.

Though I never really so listen to actual music.

No, failure to find music you like just means you aren't putting any effort into looking for it.

I think it may have something to do with the fact that folk music is no longer a thing- not because I love folk music (although it's actually pretty nice), but because world-popular artists no longer have a reason to be "better" than something. On a varying note, neither do they have much motive to make their music gain anything but popularity.

There are some people with actual talent, those who use their actual voice and true instruments. However, they tend to be overshadowed by the other artists. I believe that music, as is, is not of the same quality as it was say... thirty years ago, but it is still good enough to keep it alive.
