Their purpose, to carry out the long-term scientific experiments to see the effects of long-term travel in space at speeds just over half the speed of light. In a freak accident, the "Manifest Destiny's" scientific team came across a fungus that had been growing in one of the storage bins and let it cultivate fully inside the bodies of some of the prisoners to see its effects. The fungus was however identified as a mutated strain of Cordyceps that then infected the prisoners making them first, extremely ill, and then, into monsters capable of surviving in the cold dark of space. Though devoid of any uniform shape, they still were horrific. In the many years that followed, maintenance teams that came out of stasis along with prisoners and scientists also scheduled to leave stasis, were hunted and preyed upon by the Ophiocordyceps Animus (as the new strain was called) and their hosts.
When the "Manifest Destiny" had finally reached her target, she had no more active crew members on-board out of stasis to slow her down. Due to this, the "Manifest Destiny" re-entered the atmosphere at too high a velocity to maintain aerodynamic stability due to her signature "goose neck" and "gravity rings". The sudden instability after having spent four centuries in space, has torn the hull and scattered it across the main continent of Serafall. Thankfully, the designers of the "Manifest Destiny" were counting on the accidental entering of the atmosphere as a worst case scenario and thus planned for it. each section of the Manifest Destiny was segmented and pressurized as well as given individual heat-shields and landing chutes. Now in free-fall over the planet, the survivors aboard the many various sections of the "Manifest Destiny" are being awoken forcibly from stasis and sent to their stations to prepare for impact.
