ONN Exclusive: Pay to Win or Just Pay Stupid?

Postby The Osiris News Network » Sun Sep 29, 2013 11:35 am

How much would you spend to recruit the world? $107 seems to be the answer and we've found someone willing to actually try to recruit the world. Vandoosa, of the region Glorious Nations of Iwaku has spent 107 US Dollars on telegram stamps, sending a recruitment telegram out. The telegram can be seen here:
Image

Both the amount of money spent on the telegram and the content of the telegram itself has raised eyebrows and evoked surprise among members of the international community. Professional couper and former GCR delegate Dalimbar questioned the move before adding "Buddy spent $107 on that?"

Osiris Empress Detective Figs was shocked in *'s. "*wow*" She said.

When former Capitalist Paradise delegate Afforess sent a recruitment telegram to the residents of the world's 100 largest regions, it netted his region a benefit of around 200 nations, although recently the region's population has declined, so the move could pay off for Vandoosa's region.

But the price tag of $107 is staggering. Most of the telegrams, if the results of Afforess's recruitment are repeated, will never be read or even received. Add to that the diminishing returns experienced by recruiters and this reporter has to ask: is it worth it?

I confess to being utterly surprised. If I had a $100 to spend, it would not be spent on NationStates but on something more worthwhile and necessary.

Might be interesting to get the sender to publish their Delivery Report. Also, I suspect this TG will be more of an advertisement for implementation of TG filters than a recruitment effort.

This is not going to be unsuccessful. The reply to that TG I sent out just to troll Osiris was pretty good. He won't get 100k people joining his region, but even fifty or a hundred would be good for his region's activity.

I think that kind of commitment is admirable.

Most of them will barely stick around.

It wasn't commitment. It was an idiot with rich parents, most likely. Or at least indulgent ones.
Never underestimate the power of cynicism, pessimism and negativity to prevent terrible things from happening. Only idealists try to build the future on a mountain of bodies.

The Thing to Remember About NationStates is that it is an almost entirely social game - fundamentally, you have no power beyond your own ability to convince people to go along with your ideas. In that sense, even the most dictatorial region is fundamentally democratic.

Wrong, Vandoosa used 1/3 her paycheck on it. And yes, the region is very dedicated.

Can hardly say anything, I spent $300 on a bike to get more exorcise, rode it twice. At least Max gets this money.

EDIT: Actually, I have my preferences to allow all recruitment and I haven't gotten a single telegram, across several puppets too. Guess they didn't send to the whole world after-all.

If you had 20 telegrams already in your inbox the recruitment ones do not go through.

Wait, really? You spend over one hundred bucks and you can only reach those who have not gotten 20 telegrams so far? Last puppet I founded got 20 the first day...

Which is absurd.

Puppets I founded before scripts were allowed and stamps were added would get between 5 and 10 TGs total. Now they get 20 in 15 minutes.

Or are in class regions. Or have a Postmaster account that is full (so at 100 rather than at 20 :P). Or had a previous recruitment effort from the same region that was very recent.

There's a problem here. A lot of folks are poking fun at the sender and talking about how it's a useless endeavor. Given that this is the first time anyone's ever really tried this, I can't understand why everyone has already decided on what the results will be.

I'm also confused as to why a hundred bucks is considered a huge amount of money. I don't make very much at all, and I could see myself dropping a hundred bucks just to annoy people. This is an actual constructive use of the money.

One criticism I'd have is that they really oughta have a offsite forum(I see they have one for their military but not a normal offsite forum).

Other than that, this is one of those things that screams "I want to go to there". If they're willing to put those resources to use just to build the community, at least one person over there is VERY committed. I'd wager on it being more than one person. Could be wrong about all that, but it makes me curious enough to check it out, which is the whole point. It's just up to them to keep people.

Most of my nations have full mailboxes. I'm sure I have at least one nation that doesn't, but I haven't logged onto it since that TG was sent.

I think his general point is, we all spend money we don't need to, and who is to say that this 'wastefullness' is any better than buying Five Guys burgers (gawddammit I love Five Guys' burgers) when I could have saved quite a bit of money each week with dollar menu burgers? So, basically, making assumptions about a persons character/resources/values based on the fact that he 'wastes money on a game' is fairly ignorant.

Spending 100 dollars to annoy people when you don't have a lot of money is a comment on the character of the person - namely, that they'd consider it a worthwhile use of 100 dollars.
