British Lib Dems want to ban fossil fuel autos by 2040

Postby New Maldorainia » Wed Aug 07, 2013 5:34 pm

In what is not a new idea for the party the British Liberal Democrats have put forth a plan to BAN all fossil fuel cars and trucks from British roads by the year 2040. The idea is to create what they call a "zero carbon" country for the future.

Under the plan gas and diesel vehicles would be permitted if they are moving freight. All passenger vehicles would however be super efficient hybrids and electric vehicles. The Liberal Democrats are however interested in shale oil production, but only under certain conditions, according to The Telegraph.

This proposal would only be part of the party, not the law of the land unless approved by the elected representatives. Personally, I do not know how well this will work. Trying to predict the future and what will be the choice of energy for passenger vehicles is so nebulous. I can see why they would want to support the plan, to shore up their base and reach out to environmentally conscious people as votes, but otherwise I do not think it is a good idea, what say everyone else? Good idea to push? Bad idea? Purely political?

It's a good idea.

But enforcing it? Have fun.

Well, this idea is not without merit. Gradually start phasing out new cars that run on gas and introduce other types. The infrastructure for electric cars has to be built up first, though, to make them feasible.

Easy enough. The police just pull over cars that don't meet the requirements, cube them and then deliver the cube to the offenders house.

Enforcing is easy. Getting to the point where it could be reasonably enforced.....now that's hard.

I suppose the Lib Dems MIGHT survive (as a party) to 2040 to see their plan bear fruit....

But I doubt it.

They can use drones to enforce it, that would work. Catch you driving your gas powered car, they disable it and come ticket you.

I dunno, I don't think Clegg is that much of a sell out (yet) to vote for another party, so that's one vote!

It was meant more in a snarky manner, since I agree with you that about having fun enforcing such a thing.

That's a terrible idea, and probably redundant.
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

Of course, but enforcing it would still be a massive headache.

I wonder if the Lib Dems know what a "hybrid" actually is. Also, why only electric vehicles? Why not any other alternative means of alternative fuels, such as, oh, I don't know, hydrogen?
