Market Socialist Party [NSG Senate]

Postby Glasgia » Mon Jun 17, 2013 11:43 am

The Market Socialist Party is a unique party, taking an unworn path in the politics of Aurentina. Though many have answered the call of socialism, each party answers it in their own way and so will we.

The key principles of our party are founded in a version of Market Socialist economic policies, more specifically Ricardian Socialism. In order to achieve a thriving economy, businesses must find themselves with competition against which they will attempt to create better products at the expense of losing consumers. At the same time, the government must have means to regulate that economy as to prevent meltdown or criminal activities. While most strive for one route or another, the Market Socialist party is committed to both. By removing all private shares and placing companies under government and worker ownership, yet allowing a freely run economy, we can achieve both as an end goal for our party. In our perfect world, the government will allow businesses and consumers to interact in a free market environment, while absorbing part of the profits and regulating alongside democratic co-operatives for the people’s good. While this may be our end goal, we understand it is not acheivable without complete majority and look to work towards, with other socialist parties, a heavily regulated economy in the meanwhile.

The party also revolves around other issues, but does not enforce voting mandates upon these unless of extreme importance. Within this realm, the Market Socialist party looks to bring freedom to the people. Drugs that have been proven to have little or no side effects, such as cannabis, are to be legalised, while more harmful narcotics will remain banned if we succeed in bringing our party to power. The rights of all minorities shall be equal to that of the population and marriage is an act between two consenting adults, no matter the gender or sexuality. Meanwhile, none will be left behind. Profits from previously mentioned economic policies will create the ability to create a large welfare safety net. All are entitled to free education, healthcare and public services. Above all, we are an entirely democratic party and respect the rights of the people.

We are open to all who feel they would abide, perhaps with some exceptions, by above policies and strive for socialist principles. If you wish to join, just post in this thread and you're automatically accepted unless I say otherwise.

Platform

Economic Policy

Perhaps the defining tenet of this party, Market Socialism is our core belief. Guided by many of the works of Karl Marx and David Ricardo, the party seeks to establish democracy in the work place and bring power to the worker.

In order for this goal to be realised, a social revolution is required. Violence is not the answer, but in order to sustain an economy for the people we must first displace the bourgeoisie from control. The Market Socialist Party intends to do so by gradual re-distribution of wealth, primarily from progressive taxation and encouragement of compensated democratisation within businesses.

Even after a Socialist system is in place, it is still of the utmost importance to ensure economic equality. Workers who have been disadvantaged by external means should be compensated, complying with the Ricardian law of rent, in order to maintain an egalitarian culture.

However, we recognise this as purely a long term goal. The Market Socialist Party realises that the people of this nation may not be entirely committed to this policy and until they are, we will strive for a heavily regulated mixed market economy.

Throughout the transition and result the party, at large, is committed to regulation of the economy in order to reduce negative externalities. We believe that businesses should be held responsible for all external harm, to ensure the well-being of the people in this generation or future generations.

Social Policy

It is of the party's belief that, in order to truly bring freedom to the people, the government must resign from unnecessary interference in their personal lives. If the resultant actions do not hurt or create the possibility to hurt another, then the Market Socialist Party believes people should be free to do as they wish. In more specific policy this entails the rights to make use of some drugs, equal recognition of sexualities, support for minorities and - encompassing much of the above - an end to discrimination of any kind.

Social Security Policy

Though the Market Socialist economic model is committed to reducing inequality, we recognise that complete eradication of inequality is nigh impossible. Therefore, it is the duty of those who can afford it to provide for those who cannot. This includes not only proper unemployment benefits, but high benefits for the disabled, elderly, injured, pregnant and parents. While we may not be able to create a utopia, it is of the utmost importance to try.

Public Services

The Market Socialist Party is committed to maintaining a wide variety of public services, free of cost. We believe that necessities such as education, healthcare, shelter or even basic protection should be available without being subject to the perversions of Capitalism. This entails state provision of the above listed, with universal education and healthcare, comprehensive state housing and an efficient emergency service.

In other areas, costs may be an unfortunate necessity. Without maintaining complete government control, major sectors including energy and public transport should be regulated in order to ensue that all can afford these basics within life.

Defence and Foreign Policy

We believe co-operation is the key to any foreign policy. By working together with other nations, we can lower boundaries. However, we must be careful not to lose neutrality in a world full of constant conflict. In order to maintain that balance, we must make our choices carefully.

Therefore, the military should not be required beyond its most vital measures. National defence should be the main priority and that entails no more than a small, efficient fighting force. The creation of a larger military force points only towards a means of aggression rather than safety at home or for others abroad.

Organisations committed to peacekeeping and aid of all sorts, specifically such as the UN and its organs, are vital to encouraging development abroad. Just as with our economic policy, it is a basic tenet of foreign aid that those who can afford to should provide for others in need.

As stated by multiple economic theories, including Ricardo's theory of comparative advantage, any barriers to free trade are detrimental to our nation's economic situation. Acting upon this policy is important and we believe that joining the EFTA was a first step towards encouraging global trade to come to Aurentina.

Brand

Our party is an attempt to incorporate both social liberalism and market socialism into a single political entity. In order to display this, our party colours are red and yellow, more specifically Chilli Pepper #C11B17 and Beer #FBB117.

The party asks all members to show support and attract new members by wearing the following badge proudly in their signature:

Market Socialist Party: A Red Dawn and a Bright Future
Code: Select all

And finally...

Could you elaborate on your ideology? Is it a system under which the government owns all businesses but allows them to compete against each other?

If I understand it correctly, he seeks to maintain a market economy but place each workplace under democratic worker control, while giving the government official ownership of all businesses so that it may direct the economy as necessary to prevent collapse/recession or help the economy recover from such events.

Pretty much. I know I could simplify the OP a lot more, but I feel it's not impossible to understand. The stock market is pretty much replaced by democratic worker control and government control. Though it's not stated, making sure the workers have 51% of shares (or vouchers) and the government has 49% in every business is what we're aiming for.

It should be noted that our form of socialism is merely an end goal. We will allow well regulated business enterprises and support worker's cooperatives etc, as we work towards our end goal of market socialism - with the plan as outlined. We would not seek to implement our end goal until it is actually feasible (i.e. when/if we have widespread support).

We feel that the Market Socialist Party is an ideal political group for those who remain liberal on social matters but also share our view on economics. You do not have to necessarily agree with the specific version we promote, but those who feel that business should be highly regulated to safeguard the people and workers from exploitation will find this a welcoming place.

I'm inclined to think that putting that summary in the OP in addition to the excellent work that's already there, would only help.

I have my issues with the stance on drugs, which I have saved in a draft post, but I'm not sure yet if this is the time and place for that.

I'm not an expert on making politics less intimidating, but perhaps adding this summary as well would help ease people into it? Just spitballing here.

Thanks! We acccept a variety of economic views, though market socialism is obviously our end goal. If you feel that you don't differ too far from our platform, you're welcome to join!
