The Teal is Greater Than the Purple

Vilita & Turori ousts rivals Starblaydia, Semi Finals await

After ages of not playing each other in regional competition, the Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat things were once again drawn against their Starblaydian rivals in the knockout rounds of the AOCAF competition. Having previously met in the first knockout round of AOCAF 37 and AOCAF 38, the long time rivals were back at it in the Quarter Finals of AOCAF 40 in Pacitalia.

While unlikely to be as epic, and certainly not as important a match as the AOCAF 10 meeting between the sides, it would be an important test for Vilita & Turori against a Starblaydia side just one cup removed from its own resurgence and an appearance in the World Cup final.

For the Eel-Cat things, it was quite a different story. Turori failed to qualify for World Cup 64 and followed that up with an underwhelming performance in the Cup of Harmony. Vilita, on the other hand, posted by far the best record during World Cup 64 Qualifying. Unfortunately, thats where the good times ended. The Jungle Cats got to Wight and New Montreal States and wasted no time whatsoever in getting dumped out of the worlds most prestigious tournament, failing to win a single match in their second straight group stage elimination despite being a top-7 ranked nation in each cup.

The Eel-Cat things were hoping a return to Pacitalia - a non world-cup affiliated nation, would help in a return to glory as Vilita & Turori search for their first AOCAF title in over 20 editions of the world's premier regional event.

Recent results against Starblaydia had been mixed. It was the triumph in AOCAF 37 that saw the Eel-Cat things victorious by a 2-0 scoreline over Starblaydia only to get dumped out by Wight in the next round.

AOCAF 38 was a more promising scene for the Eel-Cat things with a high seed and a place in the final four seeming to be inevitable. This time, however, the purple did them in, a goalless match ended up flipping its way in favor of Starblaydia in the shootout and the Eel-Cat things were going home early once again.

This time, however, things would be different. Coming off a nervy shootout victory over 95X, the Eel-Cat things were taking nothing for granted as they rolled into the Stadio Piccolo Fiumare in Positano.

Haneshi Hamaaz'urii returned in goal for the Eel-Cat things after having to leave on the hour mark in the Round of 16 matchup against 95X due to an aggrivated muscle. Turori's Mumau Atla-Siioai filled in brilliantly for Hamaaz'urii in completing the shutout and leading the Eel-Cat things in the shootout but the coaching staff decided it be prudent to return to the original gameplay with Haneshi between the sticks.

Vilita & Turori wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, opening the offensive festivities just 10 minutes into the match through experienced winger Jomur Hulyer. Coming up the right hand side, Hulyer drove an twirling cross into the box that curved around all who eyed it, including the Starblaydi netminder. As if it had eyes of its own, Hulyer's off-balance cross found its way into the inside of the side netting and the pleasantly surprised winger was able to wheel away having opened the scoring on the day.

The Eel-Cat things would convert on a quality scoring opportunity just minutes later, however, with the youngster Etamara Kulkkiia slotting home at the back post after a long ball over the top from Endur Rotropii was flicked on by the expert forward Kristofer Kilpter. Kulkkiia couldn't miss after coming in unmarked and the Starblaydi defenders and goalie alike simply put up their hands as if to wonder what exactly they were supposed to do in defense of the second Vilita & Turori goal.

Kilpter would get his own opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the 21st minute after Azestella Azjhabekk handled inside the area trying to intercept a hopeful cross from Hulyer that was aimed for the Polarian-based striker. The referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot and Kilpter, once he got permission to proceed, wasted no time himself in putting Vilita & Turori up 3-0. Kilpters weak penalty rolled just left of center but the Starblaydi netminder was helpless to prevent it going in after committing to his own dive to the left.

Azjhabekk would make up for the misdimeaner as the first half drew to a close, putting Starblaydia on the score sheet heading in a 37th minute corner kick that Hamaaz'urii could do nothing about.

The teams entered the half with the Eel-Cat things leading 3-1 and already eying results elsewhere in the tournament as they began to size up who they might get to play in the Semi-Finals.

The Eel-Cat things made just one change at the half introducing Ukalai Saluria in the place of Kadi Molali.

The second-half continued on but it just didn't have the same energy as the first half did. The 90 minutes would play out and Vilita & Turori were victorious by a 3-1 scoreline that would send them into relatively unfamiliar territory, the Semi-Final stage of a major tournament.

The Eel-Cat things were the lowest seed remaining in the Semi-Final draw, the only non-top-4 team to advance. Audioslavia, the 2 seed from the group stage, had earlier been upset by The Inevitable Syndicate. The Syndicate's prize for that scalp was a chance at top seeded Wight, but they were unsuccessful.

Now it would be the Eel-Cat Things chance at a Wightling scalp, with the all-important semi-final match taking place in Athalone at the Stadio Syngergent. The winner would get to play the winner of the matchup between hosts Pacitalia and reigning World Cup runners-up Andossa Se Mitrin Vega for the AOCAF crown.

Despite being out-seeded by the sondry folk, Vilita & Turori had to feel somewhat confident about their chances to make a first AOCAF final in... nobody really knows how long it has been. While both Vilita & Turori have performed Miserably in recent times at the international level, the Jungle Cats did have one win to hold their hats on in the previous two editions of the World Cup. That win was a meaningless 5-3 result over Wight on Matchday 3 of the 63rd World Cup in Turori.

Vilita & Turori fans will be hoping the combination proves lucky once again in Pacitalia for the AOCAF 40 Semi Final.

Pacitalian organisers celebrate as AOCAF Cup attendance records smashed

Bigger venues, more participants, higher interest helps tournament surpass AOCAF Cup 30 attendance numbers

TIMIOCATO — Pacitalian organisers are grinning from ear to ear.

Even if the Blue Foxes don't reach the final and bring the championship home on home soil, the sport's governing body in Pacitalia can't stop talking about the way AOCAF Cup 40 has gone so far.

"I think we are all just so very proud of how this has turned out, how the country has responded to this tournament," Federazione di Futaboli Pacitaliana president Giampiero Sorinella said Tuesday. "It's our second time hosting and even after [AOCAF Cup 30], we were so amazed by how much interest and engagement we were getting from the general public. But this tournament has just blown the first one out of the water in every way."

AOCAF Cup 30 drew 4.3 million spectators over its 58 matches, a number that organisers say was surpassed after just the round of sixteen this time out.

The host federation says they expect closer to five million spectators to have passed through stadium wickets by the time the final rolls around.

They credit bigger host stadiums, more participating nations (which requires more stadia), and the installation of fan zones and large television screens at non-host cities' stadiums as helping to boost the number of people watching matches through the 36-nation regional football championship tournament.

AOCAF Cup 30, by comparison, only had 28 participating nations.

Cities that were not selected to host matches either due to size or timing constraints were given the opportunity to bid to host "viewing parties" at their major stadiums, which allowed fans to get as close to an in-match experience as possible without paying match prices for tickets, or needing to make the trek to a host city.

"It's been remarkable seeing how passionate people are about the sport and the tournament, even if they're not at an actual match," Mr Sorinella said. "I've seen some amazing scenes of joy and emotion at bars and restaurants, in public squares and at our fan zones. It's been an unforgettable experience and a privilege."

The tournament's final four nations are four-time champions Vilita & Turori, AOCAF Cup 38 third-place finishers Wight, the most recent World Cup runners-up Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, and hosts Pacitalia, who will aim for a record tenth AOCAF Cup championship.

Demi Santos' late-match heroics sealed Pacitalia's 11th AOCAF championship berth / Photo credit: APR

Demi's last-minute goal the difference, Foxes reach final

Berth in championship match gives Pacitalia chance to make history on two counts

MANDRAGORA — Demi Santos scored his fifth goal of the tournament with just seconds to play, sending the Blue Foxes through to an eleventh appearance in the AOCAF Cup final with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Andossa Se Mitrin Vega on Tuesday evening.

With temperatures nudging 30 degrees Celsius on an uncharacteristically muggy Mandragora night, it took 92 minutes for the deadlock to be broken in a tough semifinal pitting the region's third- and fourth-ranked national teams.

Demi's wrong-footed injury-time strike from just beyond the 22-yard box stunned the Vegans and sent an exhausted Pacitalian side through, arguably, hanging by a thread after facing their most challenging opponent yet.

The watershed goal came after a multitude of chances for both sides, though Pacitalian keeper Ander Bera, and his Vegan counterpart, Gret Anvilforger, were both in fine form on the evening. Bera faced -- and repelled -- all 10 attempts on goal by the Dragons, including three very near misses on Vegan corner kicks.

Meanwhile, Anvilforger was near-perfect, stopping the first 12 Pacitalian volleys before conceding to Demi in the 92nd minute.

After watching his attempt carom off the right post and into the twine, Demi ran to the corner flag, pounding his chest triumphantly with a closed fist. His facial expression betrayed his outward confidence, the Pacitalian star looking as visibly stunned and elated as the packed crowd of Blue Foxes supporters at Stadio Banco di Mandragora.

Mobbed by his relieved (but panting) teammates, Demi pointed skyward and grinned as the final seconds of the semifinal ticked away. On the sidelines, an exuberant André-Luis Partico jumped what looked to be a good six feet, his first appearance in the final as the Blue Foxes' boss now a much safer bet than it had been just seconds before.

The Blue Foxes have needed just nine goals to reach their first championship final since AOCAF Cup 37. Their effort in this Cup has been punctuated by the fact that they have gone six matches and are yet to concede a goal. After winning Group 1 and posting victories over groupmates Osarius, Carpathia and Ruthenia, and Ko-oren, Pacitalia have gone on to defeat Thatius, Kiryu-shi, and now Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, with three consecutive 1-0 wins.

Partico's more defensive-minded managing has resulted in smaller margins of victory, but more meaningful results.

On paper, Pacitalia has to feel confident about their chances. Not only is this the first final appearance for the Sondry Folk, the Blue Foxes are an impressive 9-1 all-time in the AOCAF Cup final. Their only defeat in the championship match came in AOCAF Cup 19 against Vilita & Turori; since then, they have won the regional trophy every single time they have made an appearance.

Should the Foxes capture the title, they will make history on two fronts. Pacitalia will become the first nation to win the AOCAF Cup ten times, and will be the first to win it twice on home soil. A 2-0 win over Cafundéu sent the Foxes to their first title at home in AOCAF Cup 30. At that point, only Starblaydia had won the title at home, beating NEWI Cefn Druids in AOCAF Cup 4.

It was arguably an uphill battle to reach the championship match, with 14 of the region's top 15 sides qualifying for AOCAF Cup 40, and nine of the top 10 national sides reaching the knockouts.

But as the elimination stage progressed, the football gods peeled off defending champions Audioslavia (who fell at the sword of a surprising Syndicatian side), and frustrated perennial contenders Valanora, leaving the Blue Foxes as the highest-ranked remaining team.

The final will be no cake-walk for the Pacitalians -- seventh-ranked Wight were the best nation of the 36 participating during the group stage, putting 13 goals in their opponents' nets, including a particularly nasty pair of lopsided wins over Naitpyge (5-2) and Kjeligsted (6-0). The performance earned the Sondry Folk top seeding throughout the knockouts, which they used to put down Dorian and Sonya, The Inevitable Syndicate and Vilita & Turori.

Andossa Se Mitrin Vega will face the Eel-Cat Things in the third-place playoff in Rigunanta. The Vilitan-Turori side were looking to win a fifth championship but were denied that chance in a 1-0 defeat to Wight.
